Omega
Kenzie's POV
It's been days since Derek killed Peter and Peter had killed Kate and just like we predicted the Argents were blaming us for her death and with Derek being the Alpha now they were after him so we'd had no choice but to find a new place to hide out given Chris knew I was staying at the motel so we hadn't been able to stay there.
I didn't exactly like where we ended up but I knew there wasn't much choice but an abandoned rail depot, the rusty old train cars were less than sanity and trying to explain to Lia why we were staying here and why she couldn't tell anyone had been less than ideal but again we didn't have a choice but at least there was a bathroom facility for the old workers down here and after some tinkering on Derek's part he'd gotten running water for the showers so that was one thing.
"I don't think she should be going to school Kenz" I rolled my eyes at Derek.
"She needs to go to school Derek" I argued hating this conversation since it's been happening every day for the last week, he was worried that the Argents were gonna use Lia against us again. "The bitch is gone and you know as well as I do that Chris has that code, he wouldn't dare going after Lia"
"You know as well as I do that it's not just going to be Chris much longer" he spat back at me and I frowned knowing just who he was talking about.
"We don't know that" I argued shaking my head sighing. "We can't lock her up in here Derek and we can't just pull her out of school, she's six for god's sake and it's bad enough that we barely got our education" he growled flashing his red Alpha eyes making me glare at him but before I could say anything to scold the action a scream made us both look up in shock as it echoed through what sounded like the entire of Beacon Hills. "Lydia" I spoke turning to Derek in shock, we'd found out the young girl had got bitten by Peter at the school dance and I've been keeping my eye on her for the last few days when I was at work but she hadn't been healing like one normally would after being bitten.
"I'm gonna go, track her down" Derek said making me frown.
"Why you?"
"Because" he replied crossing his arms as if daring me to argue with him, this had been happening increasingly over the last few days as well, his new Alpha...vibe was causing a rift between us since I was technically below him in the pack rank now and it has been a different change between us.
"Fine go" I spat walking away from him but he caught my arm pulling me into him. "No...no you don't get weasel your way-" he cut me off with a kiss before pressing his forehead against mine.
"I know things have been stressful on us lately but you know I love you" I glared at him for a second hating the way my heart rate picked up.
"Get out of here" I laughed rolling my eyes as I stepped out of his hold seeing him smile before he left so I walked into the second last train car where we were sleeping on the same mattress we'd salvaged from the Hale house and saw Lia laying on it with papers sprawled out around her. "What'cha doing?"
"Math" she replied without looking up making me smile as I sat down next to her.
"Need help?"
"No I'm good" I nodded my head.
"You hungry?" I asked and she looked up nodding her head. "How about you take a break and we'll go get some food"
"Will daddy come?" she asked and my smile dropped.
"He had to go out so we'll pick him up something for later" she frowned making me mad at Derek since he knew how much his absence upset our daughter and ever since coming back to this town she didn't seem like a priority to him especially considering she'd been kidnapped by his crazy ex-revenge sex partner. "It's a mommy-daughter dinner date" I smiled to make it sound worthwhile and she nodded climbing off the mattress and quickly slipped her feet into some shoes before we went upstairs. "Hold on"
I peeked out of the door just in case since no one could know where we were living and had to make sure the coast was clear before we went out getting into my 2010 Chevy Equinox which had been repaired after Kate ran it off the road, I'd also repainted it grey so that it wasn't recognized by the Argents as well as it had a shiny new number plate.
I helped Lia into the back and watched her buckle herself smiling softly to myself since she was getting so big and independent lately it was both exciting and concerning but it was a part of her growing up so I was trying hard not to be discouraged by it.
I went to our pizza place and Leo smiled seeing us and greeted Lia with a wide smile before I ordered and as usual Leo threw in a free chocolate sundae for Lia bringing it out when he collected our plates and Lia ate about half of it so I finished it before paying and left with Leo making me promise to come back like always before we got back into the car and started driving back to the rail depo keeping my eyes behind me so that we weren't followed taking a few short detours just to make sure before pulling up where we were hiding the cars and we got out and headed inside where I was not expecting Derek to be standing at the bottom of the stairs with his arms crossed looking like my father when I used to get home late ready to ground me.
"Your home earlier than I thought you'd be" I smiled at him.
"Where were you?" he asked making me frown.
"We went out to grab some dinner, this place isn't really set up for me to cook now is it?" I spat at him with a glare before I turned to Lia. "Lia go to the train car" she frowned. "Now" I told her and she huffed walking away into the train car shutting the doors.
"What were you thinking?"
"Oh don't start with that bullshit Derek, we had to eat and it's not like I can get food delivered here now can I"
"You could've waited for me to get home, texted me to get something" I rolled my eyes and heard his growl of disapproval at the action.
"We've already had this argument Derek you can't lock me and Lia in here, there are going to be times when we need to leave this place...I have work, Lia has school and no neither of us are just not going to show up to those necessary things"
"I can't protect you if you keep doing these things Mackenzie" I glared at the use of my full name and everything in that sentence.
"You don't need to protect me Derek, I am perfectly capable of protecting myself"
"Just like you did when you let Kate kidnap you and later get her hands on our daughter" I stepped back since that was just as bad as a slap to the face.
"That wasn't my fault and in case you forgot who was taken first" I snapped glaring at him.
"I wasn't an Alpha then" I scoffed and rolled my eyes again.
"Being an Alpha doesn't mean your invincible, just ask your deranged Uncle" I spat again before I started to walk away but he caught my arm. "Let go of me!" I exclaimed ripping my arm out of his hand glaring at him before I walked into the train car seeing Lia sitting on her single mattress with her head down and her hands covering her ears. "Lia?" she looked up and uncovered her ears.
"Are you and daddy getting a divorce?" she asked and my eyes widened.
"Why would you think that?" I asked moving over and sat down next to her.
"You fight all the time" she replied and I frowned.
"I'm sorry Lia, things between your Dad and I are just...complicated right now but that doesn't mean we're getting a divorce okay" I saw her eyes were glistening with unshed tears.
"Is it my fault...cause I got taken by the mean lady?"
"No baby" I argued pulling her to my side.
"But I heard daddy say that"
"I'm sorry princess" we both looked up seeing Derek before he came over and sat on Lia's other side. "I wasn't blaming you and I certainly shouldn't hold your mother accountable either" he added looking up at me with the last part. "Things have just been very stressful for us over the last few days and your Mom and I have a difference of opinion about how we should handle it"
"What is diff...fer...rence of opineon mean?" she asked drawing out her words a little with the ones she clearly didn't understand. .
"It means we don't agree" I explained.
"Oh...is that bad?" she asked making me smile a little.
"It can be, especially with stubborn men like your father"
"Or just as stubborn women like your mother" Derek added with a smile of his own. "But your Mom and I will always work it out okay"
"So you's will never get divorce?" she asked.
"Of course not, I love your mommy too much to ever let her or you get away" Derek replied making me smile at him. "Okay?"
"Okay daddy"
"Now how about I help you finish your homework for tomorrow" he smiled at her.
"I finished!" Lia admitted proudly and showed him her math homework. "I did it myself" she smiled at him and I could see Derek going over her answers quickly with his eyes before he nodded and smile.
"You did, good girl Lia...I told you math wasn't hard once you figure out how to do it" he gave her a one armed hug and kissed the top of her head. "How about you get ready for a shower then get ready for bed"
"Can we watch a movie before I have to go to bed?" she asked.
"Of course, I need my cuddles" I smile and she smiled racing off towards the bathroom. "How did she do?" I asked.
"Only got two wrong but she's six" he shrugged with a smile. "I meant what I said, I know things have been stressful on us lately"
"We just have to work out the kinks to this new pack dynamic, we're not used to not being on the same pack rank but we'll figure it out Derek especially since I know you want to start building up a pack and it's better for us to be on the same page with each other before there's add-ons"
"Speaking of add-ons" he brought up making me frown thinking he was about to bring up the thing we don't discuss. "I ran into an Omega tonight" my eyes widened a little not having expected that.
"An Omega?" he nodded.
"I found him at the graveyard digging up a corpse" I recoiled at the sound of that. "He ate the liver before I could stop him"
"Doesn't sound like he's all too stable" I frowned. "Must have been on his own for a while now" he nodded his head. "You want to bring this guy into the pack?" I asked skeptically not sure I wanted an unstable werewolf around my daughter.
"God no" he replied and I let out a small sigh of relief.
"Then-"
"He attacked a kid who was working tonight"
"Is he okay?" I asked worriedly and he nodded.
"Yeah I helped him out of the grave the Omega had knocked him into and noticed he was covered in bruises and when I asked where he'd gotten them from he said it was 'school lacrosse' but he lied"
"What does this have to do with an add-on?" I asked confused.
"I offered him the bite" my eyes shot up again.
"Derek-"
"I know what your gonna say but I need to start building a pack and you know teenagers have a better chance at surviving and before you disagree I'm giving them the choice and I'm telling them everything beforehand" I sighed not sure I liked it but understood what he meant since teenagers did have a better chance of surviving the bite...most of the time anyway.
"Just be careful Der...the Argents are gonna come at us hard and getting kids involved"
"I promise okay, I'm not going into any of them without thinking okay" I nodded right before I heard Lia call out to help with the shower.
"I better go" I stood up and walked out thinking about what he just said, I knew that we needed better numbers since the Argents were hunting us down blaming us for Kate's death seeing it as we deserved it so having more numbers on our side since Scott clearly wasn't, it would help protect Lia and that's all I cared about since she'd been brought into this the moment she was born given this feud between the Hale's and the Argent's has been going on before she was even born and is exactly what I'd always been afraid of when I found out I was pregnant with her and is exactly why I didn't want any more kids.
I could barely sleep last night as these thoughts continued to swirl around in my head, Lia fell asleep halfway through the movie so Derek had put her on her own mattress before climbing into bed with me and passed out as if nothing was wrong which I both envied and loved about my husband and daughter...their ability to pass out without worry.
By the time my alarm went off to wake Lia for school I was exhausted having probably only an hour of sleep so I was sluggish and out of it as I got her up, dressed and luckily Derek had already been up and gone out to get breakfast which consisted of bagels and he prepped her a quick breakfast while I gathered my work stuff for later since I had the lunch shift.
"You didn't get any sleep last night, did you?" Derek asked from behind me as I was getting myself ready after a quick shower in hopes it would wake me up so I could take Lia to school.
"I got enough" I shrugged trying to keep my heart steady so he didn't pick up on my lie.
"Even if I couldn't hear your heartbeat, I'd still know you were lying Kenz" I frowned putting down my brush and turned.
"I'm fine Der, just everything going on...it took me a little longer to fall asleep last night"
"Your stressed" he pointed out and I sighed. "Why don't I take Lia to school and you can get some more sleep"
"I'm fine" I argued shrugging.
"Mackenzie, I'm taking Lia to school and you're getting more sleep since the last thing I need is to be worrying about you falling asleep at the wheel or not being on your game and something happens...the Argents-" I sighed rolling my eyes but nodded since he had a point.
"Don't get used to bossing me around Derek Hale" I shot back jabbing my finger into his chest and he smirked.
"Go get some more sleep, I'll be back to take you to work" I nodded smiling a little right as Lia came out of the train car dressed for the day and couldn't help laugh, she had on some dark blue jeans, a black t-shirt with a red heart print on the front and a leather jacket and boots with Derek's aviator shades over her eyes.
"If that's not your daughter, I don't know what is" I laughed as Lia smiled and skipped up to Derek who couldn't hold back a smile either as he bent down and pulled his glasses off her face.
"I'm taking you to school so your Mom can get some more sleep"
"Really?" she asked excitedly and I fake a gasp pressing my hand over my heart but I smiled since I knew she was just excited to spend time with Derek as she's barely seen him since we got back to this infernal town.
"Yep" he smiled at her and I felt my heart warm at the sight of a sincere smile on his face as I hadn't seem him smile a whole lot lately. "I'll even pick you up and we'll go for ice-cream while mommy works"
"The heart break continues" I pretended to be offended but Derek just continued to smile before he picked her up. "Be good, baby girl" I cupped her cheeks and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Go and get more sleep" Derek told me again and I rolled my eyes smiling a little.
"Okay bossy boots, I'll see you two later" I leaned forward and shared a kiss with Derek.
"Ew!" Lia called out making us laugh seeing her covering her eyes.
"You won't think it's 'ew' when you're our age my little pup"
"Or much later" Derek argued my statement and I rolled my eyes at the protective Dad reply. "Isn't that right Lia"
"Boys are gross" she agreed and I rolled my eyes unable to stop the laugh.
"That's my girl"
"Get out of here you two, she's going to be late"
"Alright, I'll be back for you later"
"I have the lunch shift"
"I'll be back" he smirked as he started to carry Lia up the stairs and I watched them leave before I went back into the train car to get some more sleep.
I actually managed to get back to sleep and was only awoken when I heard the steel door shut behind someone which put me on alert and I sat up tensing until I saw a familiar dark silhouette as he came into the train car.
"She give you much trouble" I yawned laying back down since I knew it had a couple more hours until I had to be at the hospital and he kicked off his boots laying down next to me, I smiled and turned into him laying my head against his chest wrapping my around his waist.
"Nope" I nodded my head closing my eyes and nuzzled my head into him. "So are you going to tell me what kept you up"
"Right now you are" I replied with a smirk avoiding the question.
"Kenz" he warned and I sighed opening my eyes seeing him looking down at me before his hand came up and pressed against my cheek with his thumb brushing over my skin.
"I just couldn't relax, I miss our bed in New York" I lied again and the way he immediately raised an eyebrow at me I knew he'd heard the stutter in my heart. "Fine...I'm scared"
"Kenzie I won't let anything happen to you or Lia, you know this"
"I know you'll do everything in your power to try but that's just it, you're not invincible and neither am I, our daughter was born into a cruel world where she's being hunted just for who she is...for something she had no control of and I hate it, it makes me regret getting pregnant even though she's the absolute love of my life and I don't regret her, I never wanted my kids to grow up in this type of world"
"Kenzie we've talked about this"
"It doesn't erase my fears talking about it, if anything it just makes them worse especially with the war that's inevitably coming straight for us and that of our six year old daughter...I've already lost everything Derek, I can't bare the thought of losing her"
"You won't, we're raising a strong little girl Mackenzie and she's a perfect balance of our strengths and that of our parents, she's a survivor and we'll always be here to protect her"
"That doesn't help" I sighed laying my head back on his chest.
"I know, I have the fears as well Kenz but we can't let them control us" I scoffed.
"Fear is my control remember" I argued with a heavy sigh. "So you heard anything from the kid?" I asked to change the subject.
"No not yet" he sighed and I nodded but couldn't help feel nervous over the fact that someone knew about us and knew about the Argents because Derek told me that he was telling them everything so they knew what they were getting into. "Get some sleep Kenz" I smiled and tucked myself against his chest closing my eyes and let myself drift off with the sound of his heartbeat underneath my ear.
Derek's POV
I'd dropped Mackenzie off at the hospital about an hour after she'd fallen back to sleep and I headed for the high school since there was one thing I had to check up on...something I hadn't even brought up with Mackenzie because I knew she'd have my ass about it but he'd came to me...I followed his scent to the bathroom walking in and knocked on the stall door he was in hearing the frantic breaths behind it.
"Oh I'm fine Danny, just go back to class" he argued, I rolled my eyes and knocked again more forcibly since something was going on and I needed to know. "Just give me a second okay" I started banging on the door. "I said give me a freakin' second!" I busted the lock and pulled Jackson out towards the sinks.
"You're looking a little pale there Jackson, you feeling okay?" I asked brushing his shoulder and he flinched.
"Never better" he replied but I knew it was a lie, he reeked of...something.
"If somethings wrong I need to know, your with me now" I circled him.
"Wait...with you...me with you?" he had the balls to laugh. "What am I, your little pet?" he asked and I glared at him. "Just because you gave me 'the bite' doesn't mean I'm apart of your little wolf pack, sorry but to be honest you don't exactly show outstanding leadership qualities"
"Is that so?" I asked him smugly.
"Look I've got my own agenda, which doesn't involve running around the woods at night howling at the moon with you and McCall, okay so why don't you just back the-" I cut him off pushing his head to the side as soon as I noticed the black blood running out of his ears. "What is it, what's happening?" he asked.
"Your body's fighting the bite" I replied.
"Why?" he asked but I couldn't answer him and started backing away, my mind unwillingly flashing to one of the worst memories of my life...someone I didn't like or think about.
"I don't know" I finally replied.
"What does it mean?" he asked turning towards me as I started to back towards the door. "What does it mean?!" I didn't reply and left heading back out to my car getting in and grabbed the steering wheel trying not to think about her but watching that brought it all back.
Kenzie's POV
It was a severely boring shift with nothing really exciting coming in besides the usual bandage changing, wound care and medication updates but keeping the tiniest bit busy was keeping my mind off everything that's happened since we returned to this town.
I don't know why were even still here especially when Derek swore that we were only here to find Laura but then it became about finding her killer and now I have no idea why were even still sticking around.
I jumped feeling a hand clamping around my wrist and pull me into a dark storage room and I would have screamed if it wasn't for the scent that flooded my senses as the door was closed and quickly fiddled around near the door looking for the light and when I felt the switch I flipped it on.
"What-" I was immediately cut off when he cupped my cheeks and pushed me against the wall pressing his lips against mine and I kissed him back for a few seconds before pulling back. "Hey...hey" I cupped his cheeks and lifted his face. "What's wrong?" this definitely wasn't like him.
"I just needed to kiss you" I frowned but let it go and kissed him again before I remembered where we were and pushed him back.
"We can't do this here, I'm working" he smirked ignoring me and kissed me again. "Derek I'm serious"
"We used to hook up in the janitors closet all the time" I rolled my eyes at him.
"We're not teenagers anymore" I argued.
"We could be" I rolled my eyes at him.
"Please, we're getting old"
"We're 24, that's hardly old" he argued and I laughed before kissing his cheek.
"Alright, out with it what's really going on?" I asked since I knew he wasn't just here to attempt to sway into closet sex.
"Nothing, I've just missed you"
"Bull Derek, I know you and somethings on your mind, now you either tell me now or I need to get back to work" he sighed and stepped away from me.
"There's something I should have told you a week ago" I frowned narrowing my eyes at him. "Don't get mad"
"Those are never words that end up well for you" I commented crossing my arms and he sighed nodding his head agreeing with me.
"The night I buried Peter underneath the house, Jackson came around asking for the bite and-"
"Please tell me you didn't" I cut him off giving him a glare but his look answered for me and I wasted no time hitting his shoulder. "Are you kidding me, you bit Jackson of all people in this town are you crazy!"
"Calm down" he warned me.
"Calm down are you serious, why the hell did you bite Jackson and then not tell me about it?!"
"I knew you'd react this way"
"Yeah because you're an idiot-"
"Kenz-"
"Don't you 'Kenz' me, did you really think Jackson was the best person to turn into a freakin' werewolf?"
"No I didn't, it was stupid"
"You're telling me" I scoffed shaking my head at him then sighed and let my arms drop to my sides before I turned back to him. "So what's going to happen?" I asked since I had a feeling Jackson wasn't one to conform to a pack lifestyle.
"Yeah that's just the thing, I went and saw him and he started bleeding"
"Bleeding?" I asked and when I stopped to look at him I understood what he meant by the saddened eyes. "You mean like...bleeding black blood?" he nodded his head and I immediately knew why he'd came here, what he'd been forced to remember with a sight like that...Jackson's body was fighting the bite just like hers had. "Derek" I walked towards him and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. "I know what your thinking and it's not your fault" I told him even though I know he wouldn't believe me.
There was one thing that I learnt very early on about Derek and it's that he blames himself for things completely out of his control and it's why he's so protective over me and Lia but also why he's so cold towards other people seeing as he feels like he shouldn't get close to people.
"He'll be fine okay, it's not your fault...I mean maybe it's just taking some time it's been days since you bit him and he's fine so maybe...he'll be fine by the full moon" he sighed nodding his head.
"You should probably go and get Lia, I have an hour left and then I'll be home okay"
"Okay" he sighed squeezing my waist before letting go then we checked that the coast was clear before I left heading back to the nurses desk watching him follow behind me after a few seconds leaving the hospital to pick up Lia.
Right as my shift was over I'd overheard the other nurses talking about one of the ambulances which was being in a D.O.A patient was attacked by something and my mind immediately went to the Omega that Derek had that run in with last night, I frowned grabbing my bag and went out seeing the Camaro parked waiting for me so I headed over and hopped in.
"Mommy we're getting pizza for dinner?" Lia called out excitedly the moment I was in the car.
"Oh really?" I questioned turning to Derek who just shrugged. "She's going to turn into pizza with the amount she eats a week"
"I don'ts eat that much" Lia protested making both Derek and I laugh before I remembered what I'd heard.
"Hey Lia, play a game okay" I handed her back my phone and she immediately started playing a game while Derek turned towards me knowing that was a cue that I wanted to talk about something without our daughters sole attention being on us.
"What's wrong?"
"I heard something as I was leaving, there was an ambulance inbound with a D.O.A patient but they got attacked and something got into the back"
"The Omega" he nodded immediately coming to the right conclusion. "Where was this?" he asked and I frowned looking back at Lia since I really didn't want to take her around that. "Kenz, we have to get this guy now" I sighed.
"They were off route 5" he nodded and turned around heading in that direction instead and Lia looked up.
"I thoughts we were getting pizza" she complained.
"We are, we just have to make a quick stop first" Derek told her and she pouted.
He drove along route 5 until we could hear the chatter and siren of the police arriving on the scene and knew we were close enough so he pulled onto a back road which went towards the preserve and parked before turning towards me.
"Stay here, I'll get the scent and try and find this guy"
"You can't be serious" I argued since he really expected us to wait in the car until he found this Omega, that could take hours and Lia needed to eat and get to bed sometime soon.
"Just stay here, I won't be long" he got out and I glared at his retreating figure before I turned to Lia who was looking at me.
"Come on baby girl" I hopped out and pulled the seat forward unbuckling her.
"Daddy said to stay here" she protested and I rolled my eyes but smiled a little since Lia really was the best of both worlds, she listened to every instruction we gave her which was imperative in the world we lived in.
"Yeah I know" I shrugged and started walking in the direction of the ambulance stopping before I got too close and too in a deep breath of air to catch the scent and sampled through the many that were there locking onto the unfamiliar one and my husbands which both veered off in the same direction. "Take a breath Lia, find your Dad's scent" I told her since I knew she'd been coming into more of her abilities.
"I founds it" she smiled after taking a deep breath and I smiled back at her before we headed in that direction, I had her on my back as I walked through the forest keeping all my senses open in case of a sneak attack but as we were walking I caught a new scent and groaned since that was just what we needed out here as well. "That's Scotty!" Lia exclaimed and I quickly shushed her.
"You gotta be quiet Lia" I warned her before the sound of a struggle up ahead caught my attention and I started running towards it.
"Wait!" I heard Scott calling out and rolled my eyes at the stupidity since the Argents no doubt had heard about this attack too and were no doubt hunting this Omega down. "Stop!" I ran over seeing him jumping over rocks chasing after the Omega but felt a hand suddenly clamp down on my wrist pulling me to a stop and I turned into the angry eyes of my husband but before he could reprimand me we heard something trigger and looked back seeing the Omega strung up by his wrists in a snare hanging in the air with his feet barely touching the ground.
"Shit" I cursed since that had to be the Argents.
"Get over there now!" he pointed behind a large cover of trees and I nodded quickly rushing over to them with Lia clinging to my back still while he went over knocked Scott away before he started dragging him over towards us.
"What are you doing, I can help him" Scott protested fighting against Derek's grip on his jacket.
"They're already here" Derek snapped back at him.
"I can help him!"
"Quiet" I bit back moving over towards them hiding behind the same tree they were at since we could hear the clump of footsteps heading our way, I put Lia down holding her between me and Derek and she latched onto my leg while I peered around them watching as the Argents and their helpers arrived. "Lia don't look" I whispered turning her head away as Chris approached the Omega who was growling and snapping in his direction before my eyes widened when I saw the person with him...it can't be...he couldn't be here, Chris took a step close to him again before flicking out a cattle prod and electrocuted the Omega forcing him to shift back into a human and scream which made Lia jump and cower into making me regret coming out here now.
"Who are you?" Argent asked but the Omega didn't answer. "What are you doing here?"
"Nothing, nothing I swear" the Omega finally replied.
"You're not from here are you?" Argent asked him but again got no response. "ARE YOU!?" he yelled and Lia jumped again making me frown and pull her closer to me making sure she didn't look.
"No!" the Omega replied. "No I came…I came looking for the Alpha, I heard he was here that's all" I looked up at Derek knowing that his reply would've just added to the target on our backs from the Argent's. "Look I didn't do anything I didn't hurt anyone, no one living he wasn't alive in the ambulance, he wasn't I swear" the man added pleading for his life but I knew it wasn't going to make a difference.
"Gentlemen!" another voice yelled out and this time it was me who jumped at the sound of it, it triggering a memory that I had long since repressed, I peered around Derek again to get a better look and saw the man I'd hoped to never see again. "Take a look at a rare sight" Gerard Argent went on as he turned towards his son. "You wanna tell them what we've caught?"
"An Omega!" Argent answered him.
"The lone wolf, possibly kicked out of his own pack or the survivor of a pack that was hunted down, maybe even murdered and possibly alone by his own choice, certainly not a wise choice" Gerard walked towards a rock behind him and slowly pulled out a sword then walked back towards the dangling werewolf. "Because as I am about to demonstrate…an Omega rarely survives…on his own" I shielded my eyes pulling Lia into my arms holding her head into my shoulder hearing the sword swing before the sickening squelching sound of it cutting through flesh knowing he'd just severed the Omega's lower half.
"Look, look, look at them" Derek said forcing Scott to look. "You see what they do, this is why you need me why we need each other, the only way to fight them is together"
"What are they doing?" Scott asked him.
"Declaring war!" Derek replied through his teeth seething with anger then pushed Scott away and didn't hesitate to follow as we quietly made our escape getting into Derek's Camaro and we dropped Scott home before we returned to the train depo.
I carried Lia into our train car since she'd fallen asleep on the way here, we had picked up the pizza in case she woke up later but for right now she was out cold and I didn't want to wake her so I laid her down and Derek and I's mattress before I walked out leaving her to sleep finding Derek waiting and knew I was about to get my ass chewed out and frankly I deserved it since I never should have left the car, I shouldn't have taken Lia out there and I knew that.
"Please don't be angry with me, I know I messed up" I spoke before he could but he surprised me by pulling me into a hug and I didn't hesitate to melt into the embrace since I was just as shaken up about that as he must be.
"This doesn't mean I'm not angry at you Mackenzie" he breathed into my ear and I nodded, not even caring that he used my full name. "Are you okay?" he asked and I hesitated to answer since I didn't know, I'd hoped to never see that man again.
"No" I decided to be honest and he nodded pulling me tighter into him. "We're screwed, they're not going to stop...it's happening all over again"
"It's not, it's not I not going to let it happen okay"
"You and I both know your not going to have a choice" I replied feeling the tears rolling down my cheeks as he cupped them and used the pad of his thumbs to brush them away.
"Kenz, I promise you that you and Lia will be safe, he won't touch you"
"I can't lose you" I argued shaking my head knowing that Derek would die trying and I couldn't live through that, he pulled me close again knowing that no words were going to settle me down and I cried against his chest trembling in fear letting it take over my body before I started feeling drowsy literally crying myself to an almost sleep which he must have realised as he picked me up and carried me into the train car laying me down next to Lia. "Promise me that you'll run with me if we need to Derek" I asked him laying my head against his pillow letting his scent wash over me more as I looked up at him. "Der...promise me please?"
"I promise" he replied pressing a kiss to my forehead before he stood and left the train car and I knew he needed his own space to deal with what happened tonight so I didn't protest and I turned pulling my daughter against me hugging her body to mine.
"I'll do anything to keep you safe baby girl" I promised her before I let my eyes close and drift off to sleep.
