There really isn't any good way out of the situation that Raven has found herself in.
As soon as she'd been able to after she'd fought off Cinder, she'd fled back to the tribe's encampment and had them pack up their things and get ready to move again, but deep down, she knows that it's not going to do any good. So long as she's in possession of the Spring Maiden's power, it's only a matter of time before Salem finds out and comes after her for it. She might have killed Cinder and taken out one of Salem's minions, but so long as Salem is alive there will be more. It won't end until Salem is defeated.
And Salem can't be beaten. Raven knows that. It's an unwinnable position to be in.
Not for the first time, Raven curses herself for allowing herself to end up in this mess. She should have turned away the Spring Maiden the moment she'd realized just who the girl they'd captured was. Not when she was fully aware of what the consequences could be if she allowed the child to stay. Not when she knew that Salem was interested in tracking down and capturing all four of the maidens at any cost.
But Raven was soft. And for all the power she had possessed, the girl that had been brought into the camp was just a child. A terrified child who'd, when overwhelmed, had fled the duties and responsibilities that had been assigned to her in an effort to outrun them. To escape her fate.
Not that Raven knows anything about being in that kind of situation, of course not. She'd chosen to return to her tribe when they'd needed a leader, instead of sticking with Ozpin when he was fighting a losing battle. It had been a sensible decision, and that's all there is to it.
Raven Branwen doesn't run away from anything.
And now she has to deal with the situation that she's allowed herself to be caught in. The one she'd envisioned from the moment that the former Spring Maiden had fallen ill, and showed no sings of recovery. The one that she'd known was a possibility from the moment she'd failed to banish the girl back to where she's come from, and instead permitted her to live as a member of the tribe.
Raven had seen this coming, of course she had. But she'd been so caught up in and drawn in by the idea of having access to that kind of power, thinking it could protect her, help the tribe, that she'd ignored the truth that was staring her right in the face. Instead of protecting herself, and the tribe, of course, from Salem, she'd just painted an even larger target on her back.
The Spring Maiden had still been young when she'd died. A child still, naive and foolish. And like a fool, when she'd passed, she'd left the power that she possessed to none other than Raven. Despite her charade with Vernal, and all the tricks up her sleeve that she'd used to try to bury the truth, in the end, it all led to the same inescapable fate: hunted by Salem for the power that she possesses.
Of course, she still has options. She hasn't given up quite yet.
Raven could run for it. She could abandon the tribe, go into hiding, use her ability to turn into a bird in order to disguise herself and lie low. Not an option she particularly likes.
She could continue to try to delay the inevitable, keep moving the tribe around and hope to stay one step ahead for as long as possible. Stay in denial.
Another option, equally as unappealing as the first, is to simply give up and turn herself in, get it over with. Hope that her fate is sealed quickly and that she can maybe buy her tribe a bit of time and leniency, as unlikely as that is to work.
The last option, and the most foolish, in her opinion, is to take Qrow up on his offer, and join her brother and her daughter on their pointless little quest to attempt to defeat Salem. Like she said before, completely foolish.
Yang's disappointed expression when they'd met in the vault under the school flashes through her mind, and with a growl, she shakes her head to clear it. She doesn't have time for this kind of sentimental nonsense right now. Not when her survival is at stake.
But whatever choice she ends up going with, she needs to make that decision soon, or there won't be any choice left. She'll be left at the mercy of whatever fate has in store for her.
For now, she'll inform that the tribe that they'll have to move again. Maybe that will buy her some more time, at least.
Yeah, she'll keep telling herself that.
