The Hubble Identity 5

Chapter 5

Secrets

Mildred was lying in her bed dreaming. It wasn't one solid dream. It seemed to be a lot of abstract images like broken pieces of glass. she saw a tall woman in black who wore her hair in a tight bun. The woman appeared to be glaring down at her in disapproval.

Mildred recoiled from her. Then the image changed to that of a blonde girl whose eyes seemed to be filled with anger and hate directed straight a her. Mildred seemed to feel the strength draining out of her.

Mildred jolted awake. She was breathing hard and her heart was beating fast. She jumped out of bed and ran down the hallway to Jason's room.

Jason was jarred wake and nearly fell out of his bed when Mildred landed on it.

"Who, What Where?!" he cried sitting bolt upright, "Millie?"

Jason rubbed sleep out of his eyes. As his head cleared a little more.

"What's wrong?"

"I had a really creepy dream." Said Mildred, "And I think I saw flashes of people I must have known before I ended up here."

"What did you see?" asked Jason

"I saw a tall dark-haired woman dressed in all black," Replied Mildred, "and I saw a girl my own age with long blonde hair."

"Well that's a start?" nodded Jason, "Any memory of who they were?"

Mildred shook her head.

"No, but there's something else," she said

"What?" asked Jason

"Both of them looked like they hated me." Said Mildred, her hands started trembling, "Jason they made me scared to remember who I am. What if I'm someone terrible?"

By now her voice was breaking a little.

"What if I deserve to be hated?!"

"I don't believe that?" said Jason quickly, "The girl I've gotten to know is a wonderful person."

"But you don't really know me," insisted Mildred, "I don't even really know me!"

"Amnesia just blocks your memory it doesn't change your nature." Replied Jason, "I've seen your nature. You are a genuine, warm, and caring person."

Mildred smiled and hugged Jason. Jason hugged her back. After the hugged ended, Mildred's smile faltered a little.

"What about those two people in my dream?" she said, "Why do you supposed they looked like they hated me?"

"I don't know," Replied Jason, "I'm sure that everything will make sense when we finally track down your identity."

Maud and Enid were sitting in the Dining hall practically swallowing their breakfast all the while glaring daggers at the back of Ethel's head.

The reason they were eating so fast is that they knew that the quicker they finished their breakfast the more time they'd have before class started to work on their own batch of truth potion. After they were done eating they turned in their trays and headed down the hallway

When they reached the potion lab, Maud pulled out the book she had found with the recipe in it. Enid began to gather ingredients as Maud called them out.

"Wait a minute," said Maud, "I just thought of something!"

"What?" asked Enid

"Miss Hardbroom is going to notice if extra ingredients go missing." Replied Maud, "and if that happens we'll never get a chance to use this stuff on Ethel!"

"Oh, you're right." Groaned Enid, "So what do we do?"

"I have an idea," said Maud looking over the recipe, "Everything we need seems to come from around here, and this afternoon Miss Bat is supposed to fill in for HB and take us outside to the forest to gather more potion materials. We'll just harvest some for ourselves too."

A few hours of sleep later, Jason and Millie came downstairs to breakfast. Jason's mom was in the kitchen making pancakes and Jason's dad was on the phone.

Jason and Mildred each took a small stack of the fluffy pancakes. Jason smothered his in strawberries and started eating. Mildred did too. A few seconds later, Jason's dad got off the phone.

"Hey, dad," Asked Jason, "Any luck on tracking down Millie's uniform?"

Jim Steele shook his head, "Whatever school that uniform is from they sure keep a low profile."

Mildred's shoulders sagged.

"Don't worry Millie," said Jason, "We're not giving up, and neither should you."

"Oh no, no," said Mildred, "I'm a little disappointed but I am not giving up, somehow I don't think that I'm the giving up type it just doesn't feel like me, I think."

"Good," said Jason's dad, then he changed the subject, "Listen I just got a call from Dr. Stillman the curator at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. They are loaning the Dragon's eye Diamond to the Science Museum in Miami."

"What's the Dragon's eye?" asked Mildred

"It's the largest Red Diamond in the world," replied Jason, "it's the size of a baseball and it's worth about 500 Million dollars."

"Wow," said Millie, "Just wow!"

"Yeah," said Jason, he turned to his father, "Why did Doc Stillman call you about it I mean I know he's our good friend and all, but still?"

"Yeah, I asked him the same thing," replied his dad, "Turns out he wants to hire me to go to the exhibit and keep an eye on things for him."

"Really," said Jason, "Won't the police be there?"

"Yeah," Replied his dad, "Specifically Sgt. Murtaugh."

"Oh no wonder he hired you," nodded Jason, "He doesn't trust Murtaugh any more than we do."

"Why, is Murtaugh crooked?" asked Mildred

"No, he's just the most Incompetent officer to ever pin on a badge," said Jason's mother

"Yeah," said Jason, "For example, that guy has fouled up more stakeouts and sting operations, by walking into the wrong hotel room, than any other cop in Miami history. That guy can't remember room numbers to save his life!"

"Then how does he stay on the force?" asked Mildred

"His Uncle is some big mucky muck up at the state capital." Replied Jason's Dad. "so, every stupid thing Murtaugh does gets swept under the rug." Mildred nodded in understanding.

"Now," said Jason with a smile, "If we're going to be undercover then we're going to need dates to help us blend in."

"Right," said his dad in a slightly playful tone, "But where am I gonna find a date on such short notice?"

A split second later a wet dish rag hit him in the back of the head.

"Everybody burst out laughing."

Enid, Maud and the rest of the class emerged from Cackles and headed down the path toward the tree line. They had rigged up secret pouches in their carrying bags so that they could hide the extra ingredients as they gathered them.

They worked as quickly as they could. They kept themselves away from the main body of the class as much as they could to avoid as many prying eyes as possible. They also ignored Ethel as much as they could. Her high spirits only served to make them madder.

They came to one of the hardest to find ingredients on the list. It was a certain type of flower, called a golden lily, that only grew deep in the forest. The class started into the forest. They spread out across the area as they got deeper into the forest looking this way and that in search of the mysterious little yellow flowers.

Suddenly Maud and Enid caught a flash of yellow as they passed a large thicket. When they took a closer looked they couldn't believe their luck. there in the middle of the Thicket was the largest bunch of golden lilies they had ever seen before.

The girls immediately started gathering their golden treasure. They were in the middle of stuffing their harvest into their secret pouches, when the thicket rustled and parted as Ethel Hallow stepped in to the thicket. The girls instantly twisted around to hide the sight of the open secret pouch.

Fortunately, Ethel didn't seem to notice. She just grinned almost gleefully at them.

"Aren't things around here so much better without that pathetic stumblebum Mildred Hubble." She smirked before sashaying smugly out of the thicket and back toward the other students.

An Angry Enid made to go after her, but Maud stopped her with a hand on the shoulder.

"not now," said Maud, "We'll deal with her when the time comes."

"Yeah," nodded Enid, she looked in the direction Ethel had gone, "Just wait Ethel Hallow, just wait."

##########

It was about 7 P.M. Jason and his dad were all decked out in tailored tuxedoes and pacing in the living room waiting for Millie and Jason's mom.

Just as they were about to wear a hole in the living room floor the girls came down the stairs. Toni, Jason's mother was decked out in a beautiful blue evening dress with black shoes.

Millie was decked out in a red dress and black boots. Her hair was down and styled.

Jason's eyes widened when he saw her.

"Wow," he breathed, "Millie you looked beautiful!"
