Chapter 11

As soon as they arrived at the hospital, Sharon found herself alone. Andy was taken to fix his arm; and Rachel and Zoe to the obstetrics area, then the Captain was gently guided to the waiting room. For twenty minutes, she stared at her bloodied hands not knowing what to do, the adrenaline was finally subsiding and she began to take in her surroundings.

Sharon could feel a headache starting as she tried to imagine how many testimonies they would have to hear from all the girls who were saved today, and how much violence would come out of this. She hoped all that effort would be enough to bring this cartel to an end.

But Sharon's concern was mainly for Rachel and Zoe, both were taken for tests and so far, no one had notified her of the results. What if something happened to them? What if Sharon did something wrong during the birth?

"Hey". Andy's voice made her jump.

"Andy!" She whispered and got up. She was so distressed that she hugged him tight.

The Lieutenant hugged her back and was worried when he felt her trembling, no matter how strong Sharon was, the ordeal they had hours ago would shake anyone.

"Are you okay?" He asked as he hugged her tighter.

"I don't know". Sharon whispered, but Andy knew from her choked voice and his wet neck that she was crying.

"It's okay, Tesoro". He tried to comfort her. "We'll be fine".

Sharon just sniffed, but she didn't let go, she could pretend to be a cold person in everyday life, but in moments like these high stress, she needed a hug just like anyone else. And Andy was a comforting presence, someone to lean on. She felt safe with him and the whispered reassurances calmed her even more.

After a while she reluctantly pulled away. Andy smiled gently at her and gently held her face and wiped the tears that were still spilling.

"Feeling better?" Andy asked still worried and Sharon affirmed. The Lieutenant then kissed her quickly. "Have you had any news about Rachel or Zoe?"

"Nothing yet". She sighed. "What if I did something wrong?"

"I may not fully understand the whole procedure, but I believe you did it right. Don't worry". He reassured her. "But it's been a while, let's look for news from our girls".

They then went to the counter but were told once again that the obstetrician was finishing up and they would have to wait. Andy took a deep breath and was about to yell at the poor girl when Sharon stopped him and pulled him back into the waiting room.

"Okay, Andy, let's wait a little longer".

"Only ten more minutes. So, I'm going to go through those doors and find out for myself what happened".

"So impatient..." She grumbled with a small smile. She was glad to have him there to distract her from her bad thoughts. "Now tell me, how are you?"

"I'm fine. The doctor confirmed it was just a scratch. The bullet barely grazed my skin".

"Thank God". Sharon spoke and approached him again. She then clasped their hands together, hers still stained with Rachel's blood and Andy's with his own. "I don't know how I would be if the three of you were in danger".

"Oh... I'm sure Darth Raydor would be bringing this hospital down". He let out a laugh. And when she rolled her eyes and pouted at that statement, he just kissed her one more time. "But I'm fine, Sharon. And the girls will be too. Have faith".

As soon as Andy finished speaking the doors opened and a doctor appeared, she looked exhausted but she was smiling. Approaching them, she offered her hand and barely blinked at the chaotic situation of their appearances.

"Good evening, Lieutenant Flynn, Captain Raydor". She started gently. Both Sharon and Andy felt awkward hearing their titles, it was a little odd after nearly two months of being the Bennetts. But Sharon signed the paperwork as Captain of the LAPD so she couldn't complain. "I'm Dr. Brooke, director of the children's ward and deputy director of the obstetrics ward, I am an obstetrician as well as a pediatrician. I come to inform you that Rachel is fine, her wound was also sewn up". Both breathed a sigh of relief at the news.

"Thank God, and how is Zoe? Did something happen?" Questioned Sharon worried.

'"Nothing too serious, but Zoe was born too soon and needs to be in hospital for a few days. She is still getting used to her little body and needs help". She spoke, but didn't seem concerned. "And don't worry too much, for a premature baby she is healthy, just needs a little more care". Dr. Brooke smiled a little. "Zoe will be in the incubator for a few days with some oxygen, her lungs need a little boost but nothing serious. She will be taken care of".

"Are you sure about this, Doctor? Will our piccola be okay?" Andy asked a little agitated.

"Yes, these are standard procedures. And Zoe is doing really well considering her birth trauma".

"Alright". Sharon breathed a little easier. "And Rachel is really fine, isn't she?"

"Now yes". The woman stated. "Rachel was admitted with a small amount of bleeding, but that has since been resolved. She is resting now. Whatever happened, you did well to save your lives today".

"Much more than that, Doctor". Brenda's voice startled the couple who were still holding hands. "We just saved 25 girls thanks to the work of these two".

Sharon turned to the Deputy Chief surprised and even a little embarrassed by the compliment, and saw that Provenza and Agent Cornwell were accompanying the blonde, all three of them looking happy and relieved.

"This is great news". Andy spoke happily.

"And it gets better, but the details will come later. We just came to see how Rachel and the baby are doing".

"As I already told them, they are fine, considering the chaos they went through". The doctor spoke. "But I can only allow two visitors at a time".

"The Lieutenant and Captain can go, we just wanted news". Agent Cornwell spoke. "And I'll leave one of my agents as security, so don't be alarmed to see them in place, Doctor".

Affirming, the doctor informed the number of the room where Rachel was and that she would wait for the two in the nursery. With a polite farewell, she left.

Provenza then approached the couple with a frown, he had noticed all the touching and proximity between the Lieutenant and the Captain and he was suspicious. But he decided not to talk about it now, because what really mattered was the well-being of the two girls.

"You guys look like hell". He commented on the older Lieutenant and handed a bag to Andy who looked surprised, he hadn't seen that his friend was holding something in his hands. "Detective Sykes had these clothes delivered to you. Go clean up a bit, the poor girl is going to be scared by all that blood".

"Thank you, Lieutenant". Sharon thanked her and dragged Andy over to where the restrooms were, the two of them still holding hands and unaware of this.

Two minutes passed in silence before Agent Cornwell snorted a laugh and glared at Provenza and Brenda.

"Are you sure they weren't together before this case?" The Agent asked in amusement, he'd heard a thing or two about the two officers and one of them was that they didn't get along so well. But now... "Surely they're sleeping together".

Provenza rolled his eyes and glared at Brenda, he was thinking the same thing and at the first opportunity he would confront his friend.

"Chief, I'm blaming you if the precinct collapsed". The Lieutenant spoke a little sullenly. Brenda just rolled her eyes at his drama.

"Come on, Lieutenant, it can't be that bad". Agent Cornwell commented with a smile. "We know that workplace relationships are irritating, but not that surprising".

"There's only one problem, Bryan". Brenda spoke with a sigh. "Sharon is head of Internal Affairs and Andy is the most rule-breaking officer in the precinct".

Agent Cornwell looked shocked, but then burst out laughing, he hadn't enjoyed his work this way in a long time. And those two looked like a bomb about to explode, he expected Fritz to keep him informed of this story.

"Well... then good luck, Chief Johnson". He said. "I'll go back to the office, I can get Rachel's statement when she's rested".

"Ok. We'll stay a little longer". Brenda spoke and watched the agent walk away.

It wasn't long before the couple returned, they both looked a little more willing and a lot cleaner. But the tiredness in they eyes didn't negate the turbulent night they'd had.

"So, Chief, what did you find?"

"Some valuable information, but we'll discuss that later. We just want to know what happened in that shed". Brenda with a sigh. "That was messed up".

"Well... we got a call from Rachel, and she was terrified". Sharon started. "We called you and followed the coordinates she gave us. I don't know how she got the location, but we trust it wasn't a trap".

"And when we got there we heard an argument between Judith and Adrian, he was out of his mind". Andy continued. "When they entered the shed we looked around and found a security guard, but we shot him down quickly. After that, chaos ensued".

"Adrian realized we were there and a shootout broke out". Sharon spoke and sighed. "While Andy was trying to find that idiot, I went after Rachel's screams. When I got there the nurse was already dead and Judith looked in shock but when she saw me she lunged forward so I knocked her unconscious".

"And how was that?" Provenza wanted to know as he jotted down the information in his notebook.

"I pistol-whipped in her face". Sharon shrugged. "That's when Andy showed up and we delivered the baby".

"And how did you hit Adrian?" Brenda asked Andy.

"I made him talk and I fired. A lucky shot". Andy smiled at that.

"You're an idiot, Flynn. You could have hurt yourself even more". Provenza quarreled with him.

"He was close by, I just needed to know the direction I could shoot, and I did. And it was a good thing there was no one else there. Adrian would not stop until he killed us all". Andy spoke now irritably.

"Okay you two". Brenda said and felt like a mother scolding her children. "That part of the investigation can rest with the FID, as both weapons were used".

"Elliot has been briefed and will have our depositions shortly". Sharon spoke. "Is that all, Chief?"

"So far yes". Said the blonde woman with a smile. "You are released, you can go see your daughters". Neither of them protested the Chief's speech.

Without waiting another minute, they stated and walked away, Provenza just shook his head in disbelief, he knew the closeness of these two while in undercover would be a problem. He was even prepared for a big mess of dislike, but this? They were acting like a literal couple. And the senior lieutenant was more afraid of that affection than any quarrel. But Brenda didn't seem to care about that.

"Come on Lieutenant, they're the Bennetts now". Brenda spoke with a smile; the Lieutenant didn't like that the Chief was so carefree.

Sharon and Andy reached Rachel's room and took a deep breath before slamming the door and going inside. The girl was lying on the bed, her eyes red and she was staring at the wall. The poor girl looked desolate.

"Rachel?" Sharon whispered and approached her, but she didn't go far because the young woman's terrified look stopped her.

"Are you a police officer?" The girl spoke so quietly that the Captain barely heard, and Rachel looked as if she had been betrayed.

"Yes, my dear". Sharon sighed and moved closer again, and when Rachel no longer showed fear, the Captain sat on the bed and held her hand. "I'm Captain Sharon Raydor".

"And I'm Lieutenant Andy Flynn". The Lieutenant spoke and placed himself next to Sharon. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you anything, but it was important that our identities stay hidden".

"You didn't lie about the names". She said still quietly.

"No".

"Are you married?" She asked curious.

Both officers stared at each other, their situation was very complicated right now, they still didn't label this new relationship, so they were just as confused as Rachel.

"We're not married". Andy started, but he kissed Sharon's forehead tenderly and smiled. "But thanks to all that disguise, we're together now".

Rachel's eyes widened, but she broke into a big smile, it was as if confirmation of their relationship affirmed to the girl that everything they'd been through in the last few months wasn't a complete sham.

"This is wonderful, so are you staying with Zoe?"

"What do you mean, Mo stór?" Sharon looked at her in surprise, as much as they were completely involved in the situation and eager to have the little one with them, Sharon and Andy believed that Rachel wanted to keep the baby.

"I can't keep her". Rachel stated as if it were obvious. "She is yours".

Andy sighed and faced the young woman, not knowing how to explain it without scaring her, but he chose to tell the truth, now they had that freedom.

"Rachel, you're safe now. Adrian and Judith are trapped and can't hurt you anymore. You can have Zoe, she is your daughter and you have every right to have her".

The young woman looked at them a little confused as if the concept of being free didn't make sense. And Sharon worried that Rachel's time spent kidnapped may have affected her more than they realized.

"But I don't know what to do". Rachel whispered and sat down on the headboard. "I don't know how to take care of a baby, I have nowhere to go".

"We'll help you, Rachel. We're going to find your family and give you all the support you need to get your life back".

"Oh... but- Zoe is yours". She spoke with teary eyes. "When... when Mr. Adrian me- when we made the baby, he said the baby was his property until he found a couple. And you were the chosen ones. I don't own Zoe, she belongs to you now".

Sharon and Andy were baffled by what they heard, it was clear that Adrian had sexually abused this girl and certainly all the others. The atrocities behind this agency were repulsive, and Andy was seething with rage right now, he wanted to go down to the police station and punch Adrian in the face. However, right now he needed to stay there and support Rachel. Sharon approached the girl and now hugged her with affection, whispering that everything would be fine.

"Rachel, let's sort this out, okay? You don't have to worry". Andy spoke and tried to smile encouragingly.

"Thank you, I know you will take care of me". She spoke hoarsely with tears.

"Of course, we will, you're our girls". Sharon spoke and smiled at her. "Now rest, I know you're exhausted".

Rachel just stated and lay down on the bed again, it didn't take long for her to fall asleep. Sighing Sharon got up and faced Andy.

"Andy, I think we have two more daughters now". She commented with a smile.

"I guess we're going to have to work a few extra hours". He spoke as he pulled her into his arms. "How did we end up like this, Sharon? Married with two daughters in less than two months?"

"I don't know, but I like the idea of being married to you".

"Even though I'm a troublemaker?"

"I think that's mainly because of that". She laughed. "And we can blame Brenda for putting us in this situation. Should this end badly, the idea of joining us in this case was entirely hers".

Andy started to laugh and realized that this was true, if it wasn't for Brenda the two wouldn't have fallen in love and to celebrate that the Lieutenant kissed Sharon fervently, if she was happy to be his wife even for a disguise, it wouldn't be him that would antagonize Captain Raydor.

Later when they went to nursery, Sharon and Andy just accepted that they would be parents again, Zoe was meant to be theirs and neither of them was willing to give up this opportunity to start a new life.

And when they both put their hands inside the incubator and Zoe's hands gripped their fingers tightly, they knew that no one was going to take that baby away from them.
