Chapter 5: Of Peace and War
November 24, 2001
Yokohama
Takeru groaned and opened his eyes. He squinted and rubbed his temples, adjusting to the brightness coming from his bedroom window. But wait, what window? The barracks are below ground. Takeru sat up, startled, and looked around his old room. Oh no! Takeru whipped his head to the alarm clock on his bedside table.
07:00 AM November 24, 2001
Wait, how the hell am I here, then? Takeru stood up, and everything rushed back. The flood of memories was so fast that he stumbled, falling to his hands and knees. "Whoa, the worst case of Deja Vu right there," Takeru smirked tightly. I'm back. Yuuko Sensei really sent me back here.
"Takeru!" Meiya's voice made Takeru snap his head up. Meiya stood at the door of her room in her kimono pajamas. He remembered the Kimono when she first snuck into his bed. A weird nostalgia overcame him, and he couldn't help the laugh that escaped him. Meiya blinked, confused, "Takeru, are you okay? You did not hit your head, did you?"
"Yeah, but trust me, that's the least of my worries," Takeru sighed and stood up, rubbing his head.
"Anyways, we better get ready for school," Takeru stretched. But, man, going to school that's such a foreign concept to me now.
"Takeru, it is good you are eager to further your education, but it is Saturday." Meiya crossed her arms.
"Crap, you're right," Takeru hummed and looked at Meiya.
"Takeru?" Meiya raised a brow, "you keep staring at me. Is there something on my face?"
I wonder…
"Nah, you're fine, dude," Takeru shrugged.
Meiya jumped slightly, her cheeks pink, "dude…dude…dude." Meiya repeated the word like a love confession.
Hahaha, this really is my old Meiya! Takeru couldn't help it. He moved forward and wrapped his arms around her.
"T-Takeru!" Meiya blushed before she relaxed in his embrace.
"Sorry, I just really missed you. Is that a strange thing to say?" Takeru pulled back, feeling tears prick in his eyes.
"Well, I suppose, but if you feel that way. I could always sleep in your bed again." Meiya recovered and offered that as if offering a piece of candy.
"You know what?" Takeru smirked. Sorry this world's Takeru that replaced me. "I would like that!"
"Takeru," Meiya hummed, eyebrows scrunched together. "Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, anyways, I'm gonna go to school. I need to talk to Yuuko Sensei." Takeru went to his closet. "Do you mind, though? kind of need to change."
"Oh, yes, forgive me." Finally, Meiya snapped out of her musings and returned to her room. Takeru dressed in a black shirt, jeans and jacket. When he put the pants on, he felt a bulge on his thigh. He reached into his pocket and found the CD. Shit, thank god for that. Takeru trudged downstairs and found Tsukuyomi already hard at work making breakfast.
When she saw him, she smiled warmly. "Ah, good morning Takeru-sama. I see you're up bright and early. Breakfast is still not ready, I'm afraid." Takeru stared at Tsukuyomi for a moment. I won't get another chance like this again. Tsukuyomi's brows knitted together in confusion. "Something the matter, Takeru-sama?"
"Tsukuyomi-san, do you have a boyfriend?" Takeru crossed his arms.
"W-what?" Tsukuyomi blushed and took a step back bashfully. "Takeru-sama, that's such a personal question!" Tsukuyomi blushed and then covered her cheeks.
"Sorry, sorry," Takeru raised his hands. "I just thought a beautiful woman like you had a boyfriend, Tsukuyomi-san."
Tsukuyomi looked at Takeru and felt her heart flutter. Then thankfully, to her mercy, the door opened. "O-oh, that must be Kagami-san; maybe we can talk about this some other time Takeru-sama!" She immediately turned back to cooking, her face still red.
"Takeru-chan!"
Takeru froze in place. Sumika, Takeru wanted to turn, but his body refused him. Instead, Takeru just stared at a fixed point ahead. What if I turn and she isn't there? Takeru swallowed a lump in his throat.
"Takeru-chan?"
She's right there; I know she is. I can just turn and see her. But why can't I turn around?
"Taaakeeeruuuu-chaaannn!" Sumika dragged out his name dangerously. With that, Takeru slowly turned to see Sumika with his own eyes.
"Milky Drill Punch!" Sumika threw a gut punch! "Yeowch!" Sumika retracted her hand and shook it out. "No fair, Takeru-chan, no putting books under your shirt!" Takeru stared at her for the first time in twenty years. Takeru was face-to-face with his childhood friend. Sumika looked up at him, still holding her hand. "Takeru-chan?" Her face turned to worry, "wah, did I hurt you?"
Huh? Takeru blinked, and something ran down his cheeks. He blinked again, his vision becoming blurry. I Am crying, aren't I? Takeru looked at Sumika, tears strimming down his face. "Sumika," Takeru squeezed his eyes shut. He wiped at his face, but the elation of seeing Sumika had not subsided. "Sumika!" Takeru stepped forward, grabbed her arm, and hugged her.
"Wah!" Sumika yelped as he crushed her against his chest.
"Takeru-chan, that hurts!" Sumika whined, but he squeezed her harder, afraid she'd disappear if he let her go.
"Takeru-sama!" A pair of hands grabbed his shoulders forcefully. Takeru snapped back to reality and let Sumika go. He looked up to the concerned eyes of Tsukuyomi.
Sumika fell back gasping for breath. "aahh!" Sumika gasped, her face red. "T-Takeru-chan, jeez, you almost choked me out!" Sumika gasped.
"Takeru-sama, is everything okay?" Tsukuyomi helped him back to his feet.
"Sorry, shit, I'm okay now." Takeru then helped Sumika up.
"Takeru-chan, something's weird about you." Sumika dusted herself off and eyed him weirdly.
Sumika. This is too much. I have to get out of here! Takeru stood up and raised his hands. "Sorry, just had a weird dream. Still feels like I'm living it." Takeru took a deep calming breath. "I got to go. I have to see Yuuko Sensei; I'll see you later!" Takeru walked passed Sumika.
"Ah, Takeru-chan!" Sumika grabbed his hand.
Sorry Sumika, if I stay here any longer, I might start to lose my conviction. Takeru turned and put his most 'Takeru' face. Then he brought his hand up and flicked Sumuka's forehead. Sumika stepped back and held her forehead. "Awaaa! Takeru-chan! I told you if you keep doing that, you, huh?" Sumika opened her eyes, and Takeru was long gone.
Takeru panted, running as fast as he could away from the house. "I totally forgot; Meiya ended up buying all the houses in this neighborhood!" Takeru laughed, running across an empty paved-over lot. Though as he gained more distance from Sumika, he could not help the longing that constricted around his heart.
Takeru arrived at the school and bent over, gasping for breath. "Man, if I didn't have my body from the other world. I'd have had a heart attack on the hill up here." Takeru wiped his forehead and headed inside. He walked into the school and wandered the halls. A few students doing weekend club activities wondered around minding their own business. Some stared at Takeru, probably due to Takeru acting like a tourist. He had become so accustomed to Yokohoma Base that he had forgotten the place was originally his high school.
"Shirogane?"
Takeru blinked and turned to see Yuuko Sensei, with her coat on, coming out of her lab. Takeru smiled and jogged up to her, "Sensei, I'm so glad you're still here!"
"Oh, Shirogane, I'm flattered, but I don't date younger men, now cao~." Yuuko turned to leave.
"Wait, Sensei," Takeru grabbed her shoulder. "Please, this is important." Takeru leveled her with a severe stare.
"Hm? That's a scary look Shirogane, and certainly not one I'd expect from you." Yuuko looked him over. "Did you get taller, Shirogane?"
"Maybe?" Takeru looked himself over. "Hey, Sensei!" Takeru blushed when Yuuko stepped up and slunk her hand underneath his shirt.
"!" Yuuko's eyes widened, feeling the hard muscle taught beneath her hand. "Shirogane, into my lab now!" She grabbed his hand, and Takeru followed behind. She locked the door behind her, dragged Takeru to a stool, and forced him to sit. She walked around him pinching her chin in thought. "You're not Shirogane, are you?" Yuuko finished as she grabbed her chair, dragged it before Takeru, and sat.
"I'm Shirogane Takeru," Takeru raised his hands, showing her he was unarmed.
"Oh, I know you are, but you are not the same Shirogane Takeru from yesterday." Yuuko crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her chair. "tell me everything."
"Everything?" Takeru's brows shot up.
"Everything," Yuuko insisted.
"Alright," Takeru leaned forward, resting his elbows against his thighs. "But in exchange, I need your help."
"With what?" Yuuko narrowed her eyes.
"I'm gonna need that equation you came up with, the one about parallel computing." Takeru gave her a wry smile.
"Start talking, and we'll see." Yuuko crossed her arms.
So, Takeru talked, and he let everything he knew out. From being a Causality Conductor to initially being from this world. He especially told her why he needed the equation and humanity's war with the BETA. Point of fact, he emphasized how desperate humanity and the other Yuuko were. "So," Takeru shrugged, "feel like calling the loony bin?"
"No, I should call the Noble Price Committee!" Yuuko abruptly stood up, bent down, and gave Takeru a hard kiss.
"Hmm!" Takeru blushed, eyes wide.
Yuuko pulled back and fell back on her seat, laughing. "I knew I was a genius, Shirogane!"
"Never doubted Yuuko Sensei," Takeru grinned. "Now, about that equation?" Takeru reached into his pocket and handed her the CD.
"Let's see," Yuuko grabbed the CD and rolled her chair before her computer. She put the disk in and waited a moment. "Oh? There's a video file in here." She clicked the video, and she gasped. Takeru walked up behind her, leaned over her shoulder, and smirked.
"Hello there, I suppose it's a bit of an oxymoron to greet myself like this. But, unprecedented times and all." Yuuko, from the other world, smirked at his world's Yuuko. Now I'm sure Shirogane has already told you what we need and probably even gave you a speech. He's become rather fond of those in this world."
"Oi," Takeru glared at video Yuuko.
"Shh," Yuuko shushed him and raised the volume.
"If Shirogane got this to you in time, then he should know I can only keep him in that world for the day he arrived. By the time he goes to sleep, he'll wake up back here. So, give him our equation. Time is of the essence." Just like that, Yuuko Sensei walked closer to the video, and it stopped.
"Well, as if I needed more convincing," Yuuko smirked. "Alright, let me download the equation into the disk."
"Thanks," Takeru sighed and pushed off the chair to lean on one of the tables. He crossed his arms and looked out into the city. One day, I'll ensure this will be the view of the Base. When we drive those alien bastards out of our world.
"So, Shirogane, while this downloads, I wanted to ask you some more questions," Yuuko hummed.
"Go for it," Takeru shrugged.
"What's your plan when you win your war?"
"Hm, that's at least a decade or two away," Takeru said.
"Given what you've told me, it sounds this could go beyond your lifespan. Don't plan on returning home?" Yuuko looked at his reflection on her monitor.
Takeru snorted a laugh. "The other Yuuko Sensei asked me that too." Takeru shook his head, "if I retire, it will be in that world."
"My," Yuuko chuckled. "You've certainly matured in the month you've been gone."
Takeru pursed his lips. He hadn't told her this. But, thinking about it, this was Yuuko. If there was anyone he could confide entirely on was her, no matter the world. "20," Takeru sighed.
Yuuko blinked and looked over her shoulder. "20…years?"
Takeru let a melancholy smile slowly spread across his lips. "Yuuko Sensei, want to know how the world ends?"
"…" Yuuko turned back to the screen. "What happened to you, Shirogane?"
Takeru chuckled, "I was forced to grow up."
"I'm sorry," Yuuko finally said after some silence.
Takeru blinked, surprised, "about?"
"Being right, I suppose." Yuuko sighed and shrugged.
"Shit," Takeru laughed, throwing his head back. "Wish I could have a recording of that. I bet I could use it to blackmail the other Yuuko Sensei."
"Into what exactly? I get the feeling my the other me has the same standards in men, you know?" Yuuko regained her good humor.
"Well, we did sleep together once," Takeru shrugged. Damn, he thought privately, his cheeks still tinged pink.
"Hoo?" Yuuko rolled her chair back and swiveled to face Takeru. "How did you manage that?"
"Eh, it's better I don't say." Takeru rubbed the back of his head. "It wasn't exactly our proudest moment."
"Were we drunk?" Yuuko raised a brow.
"Very," Takeru looked out the window. "Also, pretty damn depressed."
Yuuko sighed, "that world sounds awful."
"I used to think that, too," Takeru looked back at Yuuko. "But, I found a reason to fight while there. I also got to see the best and worst of humanity." Takeru's smile grew warm. "Sensei, I think the world is a beautiful place. That's why I want to drive the BETA off our world. So my friends can see a better future. So I can stand beside Meiya."
Yuuko blinked, surprised, "Mitsurugi is there?"
"Yes, and her sister, for that matter." Takeru sighed, remembering Yuuhi died in an accident in his world. "Everyone is there," Takeru frowned. "Well, almost everyone. Sumika doesn't exist in that world." Takeru shrugged, "it's for the best; I wouldn't want her to fight."
"I see," Yuuko closed her eyes in thought. She opened them and looked back at her computer. "Ah, it's done." She swiveled herself around, hit a few keys, and ejected the CD.
"Thank you, Sensei; you're going to help save many lives with this." Takeru reached for the CD, but Yuuko pulled it back at the last second.
"Shirogane," Yuuko stared pointedly.
"Hm?" Takeru raised a brow.
"I will ask one more time, are you sure you don't want to return. I theorize that the other me has already devised a way to keep you there. But I also know myself. If you stay and this war is as bad as it is. She will demand everything from you." Yuuko's eyes narrowed further.
"That's impossible, Sensei," Takeru shook his head. "I already promised her I would give her everything to save mankind."
"Shirogane," Yuuko closed her eyes. "Then do one thing for me, Mitsurugi; you like her, don't you?"
"That obvious?" Takeru cracked a grin.
"I could see it in your eyes when you said you wanted to stand beside her." Yuuko reached for his hand and placed the CD in it with the other. "Since you've chosen your path, do me a favor if you haven't already. Tell Mitsurugi you love her."
"Sensei," Takeru looked into her eyes.
"Find happiness before you decide to give the other me everything." Yuuko pushed his hands back, and she crossed her arms.
"Alright," Takeru nodded, "I'll do just that; thank you for everything, Sensei." Takeru bowed low.
"Yes, well, I never expected one of my students to be working towards mankind's salvation." Yuuko stood up.
"Well, this is goodbye then, Sensei. Oh, and please take it easy on the other, Marimo-chan and me." Takeru smirked.
"Sure," Yuuko shrugged.
"R-really?" Takeru's eyebrows shot up.
"I have a feeling I won't remember any of this, so why not?" Yuuko grinned mischievously.
"Same old Yuuko Sensei," Takeru laughed and took his leave. Takeru exited the school and looked at the early morning sky. Well, looks like I got the whole day in this world. I don't think I can go back home. Not with Sumika there; I'd feel too weird. Takeru sighed and started wandering the town. Takeru walked his old neighborhood, or what was left after Meiya. He eventually made it all the way to the city. Takeru went to the old arcade he frequented. A grin formed on his face as he looked at the Valgern-on stations.
"Played before?"
Takeru blinked and looked at one of the arcade employees who walked up to him.
"Yeah, though I forgot my GP card. Hell, and money too." Takeru rubbed the back of his head.
"How about a free game on the house, then?" The worker smiled.
"Are you sure?" Takeru asked.
"Yeah, come on, take the first station over there." The worker went behind the counter and handed him a free pass.
"Thanks," Takeru got into the machine, and not soon after, a few players showed up to play. Needless to say, Takeru ended up drawing quite a crowd. He beat quite a few players, enough that the arcade worker let him keep playing for the day. As the Sun started to set, Takeru finally decided to leave. He made his way home but stopped at that old park Mieya had never demolished. Well, I eventually remembered why you didn't destroy it, Meiya. I remembered our promise only after I was in the other world. Takeru sighed and sat down on the bench. He figured he'd just spend the rest of his time there until it was time for bed. This was my last chance to see everyone, and I decided to cower away from them. Takeru hummed and lay down on the bench staring at the night sky. Am I really that afraid that seeing them will weaken my conviction? Or am I just sparing my own feelings?
"Takeru?"
"Hm?" Takeru tilted his head back and saw Meiya looking at him from the park entrance. It's weird, I know you're not the same Meiya I fell for, but the feelings of love seem to carry over. Takeru smiled and waved her over.
"Takeru, you've been gone the whole day. Kagami went to look for you at the school, but you weren't there." Meiya stood before him; she wore an outfit he hadn't seen in ages. Her blue plaid skirt, long sleeve shirt, and black tights.
"Sorry, had a lot on my mind. I kind of wanted to be alone for a while." Takeru closed his eyes and smiled. "Want to sit down?"
"Sure," Meiya nodded.
"Okay, but I don't want to get up, so you'll have to be my lap pillow." Takeru gave Meiya a cheeky grin.
"O-oh," Meiya blushed, then got a determined look in her eyes. "Very well, this should be normal between those promised to each other after all."
Takeru sat up and let Meiya sit down. She patted her lap, and Takeru laid back down. "Ah, much better than the bench." Takeru sighed blissfully.
"T-Takeru," Meiya mumbled. "I-is it okay if I stroke your head?"
Takeru opened his eyes and looked up at Meiya. "I'd like that," Takeru smiled. Meiya placed her hand lightly on Takeru's forehead. "Soft," Takeru muttered as Meiya gently stroked his head.
"Takeru, may I ask what brought you back to this park?" Meiya looked at the old park.
"My feet just carried me here," Takeru stated.
"I see," Meiya looked away, her eyes slightly downcast.
"Meiya, I think I'm running out of time."
"Huh?" Meiya stopped stroking Takeru's head for a moment.
"Sorry, please hear my selfish request, Meiya." Takeru looked into Meiya's eyes. "No matter what, please stay with me until the graduating ceremony." Takeru felt Meiya's hand stop over his forehead.
"Takeru," Meiya looked at him with apprehensive eyes.
"I want to make a bet on Shirogane Takeru. I want him to be the man I envision." Takeru closed his eyes.
"I don't think I understand what you're talking about, Takeru, but you're asking for a lot." Meiya paused. "Why do you want me to do that, Takeru?"
"I can't say. I know it's selfish. But please, Meiya." Takeru reached up, putting his hand over Meiya's.
Meiya was silent for a moment before sighing. "Very well, Takeru, no matter what, I shall remain with you until the graduation ceremony." Meiya bit her lip, "Takeru?"
"Yeah?" Takeru said, smiling.
"Can we stay like this a little longer?" Meiya returned to stroking his head.
"I'd like that," Takeru sighed contently. They stayed like that for another hour and idly talked about nothing. Just random thoughts coming to their heads. Takeru got up and stretched and yawned. "We should probably head back now, huh?"
"Yes, let's." Meiya stood up and crossed her arms. The two walked home, where Tsukuyomi offered them dinner. Takeru, remembering this might be the last time he ate organic food, shoveled it down with gusto!
"My, did you not eat all day, Takeru-sama?" Tsukuyomi said as Takeru finished his second helping.
"Got so busy with Yuuko Sensei I completely forgot to eat all day." Takeru sighed, contently patting his full stomach. "Well, I'm off to bed." Takeru stood up and pushed his chair in.
"You're turning in quite early today, Takeru-sama," Tsukuyomi stated as she cleared the table.
"Go up without me, Takeru. I think I'd like to stay up a little longer." Meiya nodded.
"Gotcha," Takeru waved at them and trudged upstairs. Then he quickly rushed down and rushed up to Mana.
"Takeru-sama?" Tsukuyomi started before Takeru wrapped his arms around her in a hug. "T-Takeru-sama!?" Tsukuyomi blushed, embarrassed.
"Tsukuyomi-san, thank you. Thank you for everything." Takeru finally said.
"Uhm, you're very welcome, Takeru-sama." Tsukuyomi gently patted his back.
"Sorry, just wanted to show my appreciation!" Takeru turned on a dime and went upstairs without another word.
"Tsukuyomi," Meiya started. "Takeru has been acting very strange today."
"Yes, I noticed as well; also, from that hug, I wonder when he started physical training." Tsukuyomi frowned in thought.
"Hm," Meiya looked at the empty stairs. "Tsukuyomi, contact grandfather. Let him know he need not worry about the dateline."
"Meiya-sama?" Tsukuyomi blinked in surprise.
"He shall have my answer after Takeru's graduation ceremony." Meiya stood from her seat.
"Are you sure about this, Meiya-sama?" Tsukuyomi said, worried.
"Yes," Meiya did not elaborate and went to bed.
Takeru saw Meiya enter her quarters, and the two gave each other one last goodnight before she closed her door. He asked her to sleep with him in the same bed again. He wondered if she would do it. Takeru sighed; laying in bed, he got up and went to his desk. He grabbed a marker and wrote a message on a piece of paper.
You promised to celebrate all your birthdays together. So don't let her be alone anymore.
Takeru placed the note beneath his alarm and set it t 6 AM. Before even Meiya would wake up. "If you get any of my residual feelings, I hope this pushes you in the right direction." Takeru snorted, now that he thought about it. What was the right direction when reality played all possible options at once? Whatever, I guess I'm just as selfish as any other human.
Takeru grabbed Yuuko Senseis CD and laid down to sleep. At least until there was a knock on his window. "Huh?" Takeru sat up and opened it. Across from him, Sumika waved at him from her bedroom window. Make it quick, Takeru. The other you will take over anyways. Takeru opened the window, "What's up?"
"Takeru-chan, what's going on with you?" Sumika gave him a look of concern.
Takeru felt his heart tighten in a vice. "Just an off day, really don't worry about it."
"Right," Sumika paused, then crossed her arms on the window sill. "Takeru-chan, what did you and Mitsurugi-san talk about in the park?"
Takeru flinched visibly, "nothing serious, just asked to make sure she's there to see us graduate."
"Takeru-chan, you remember, don't you?" Sumika smiled slightly.
Shit, shit, shit, shit! Takeru scratched the back of his head. "Remember what exactly?"
"It's okay. Mitsurugi-san told me why she came to stay with you already." Sumika sighed.
"That's news to me," Takeru felt his mask slipping. You've always been able to see through my bullshit Sumika. That's why, please go to bed. You won't even remember this conversation tomorrow.
"Takeru-chan," Sumika looked into his eyes. Her brows knitted together in sympathy, "your eyes, Takeru-chan, look so sad today."
"You're looking too far into it," Takeru turned his head, his voice hoarse. Shit, I couldn't control my voice!
"Takeru-chan, if you won't tell me why you're sad," Sumika smiled gently. "Would you tell Mitsurugi-san?" Sumika giggled a little, "you're such a baby, Takeru-chan."
"!" Takeru blinked, tears streaking down his cheeks. Sumika, you won't remember this, right? So what does it matter if I tell you? Takeru shook his head and furiously wiped his eyes. "Shit, I don't know why, but I feel things will be different when I wake up tomorrow."
"Takeru-chan?" Sumika sat up. "I'm coming over," she moved to leave.
"No!" Takeru turned to the window. "Please, just being like this is enough for me," Takeru strained a smile.
"You're such a bad liar, Takeru-chan," Sumika sighed exasperatedly.
"I'm not; you just know me so damn well." Takeru raised his hands up in defeat.
"Takeru-chan, it's because I know you that I can tell you aren't well!" Sumika insisted. "Please, Takeru-chan, tell me what's wrong? Why are you sad?"
Takeru clenched his eyes shut, "I'm afraid of tomorrow!" Takeru finally admitted. Sumika, I could live with the blood on my hands. If I knew you'd be there, I could live with the stains that blood has left in my soul. But if I do that. If I really give in now! I would be a damn coward! I kind of figured, but at one point in one of my many lives, I loved you. Just like Class Rep, just like Mikoto and Yuuhi. I've loved each and every one of you. But right now, even while talking to you, even while my heart claws at me to stay. Takeru smiled. It was a sad and melancholy smile that bore the scars of his soul. "Sumika, I'm sorry about this."
"Takeru-chan," Sumika looked at him, and her heart felt like shredded paper. "Takeru-chan, say it. Set yourself free." Sumika took a deep breath and gave her a smile he needed. Not the one that loved Takeru unconditionally. But, the smile of the best friend he always knew, the best friend she would remain.
"I love Mitsurugi Meiya," Takeru finally said it. At least, he finally said it to Sumika. The guilt, the sorrow, and the pain. He felt it go, and he sighed. That crushing feeling in his chest, that desperate need to stay. It all left his body because he looked across the window, and Sumika gave him a coy smirk. "See, told you, Takeru-chan. You're free now." Sumika then gave him a cheeky glare. "You better not make Mitsurugi-san sad."
"Oh yeah, or what? You're gonna break your hand on my stomach again?" Takeru laughed, wiping the tears away.
"I think you should be more worried about Tsukuyomi-san." Sumika shrugged.
"Fair point," Takeru sighed. You don't know half of it, Sumika.
"Takeru-chan, you should go to sleep. It's getting late. Cry babies need their sleep more, you know?" Sumika grinned mischievously.
"Yeah, yeah, keep talking." Takeru grabbed the window. "Good night Sumika; thanks for everything."
"What are best friends for, Takeru-chan?" Sumika smiled and stuck her tongue out at him. Then, she closed her window and then her curtains.
Takeru stared at the closed window for a few more minutes. Finally, Takeru chuckled and closed his window. "Goodbye, Sumika." Takeru turned and sat at the edge of his bed. He looked at Meiya's closed door. Takeru chuckled to himself and stood up.
Takeru opened the door to a dark room with only a bedside lamp illuminating the bed. Meiya was curled up, her head resting on her knees. "Takeru," Meiya looked at him.
"Sorry, guess we were kind of loud, huh?" Takeru sat down next to Meiya.
"I apologize. I did not mean to," Meiya looked away.
"Well, it's only fair I say it to your face." Takeru stood up and faced Meiya. "I love you Mitsurugi Meiya."
Meiya's face formed a lovely 'o' and her eyes brimmed with unshed tears. I wanted to think you weren't my Meiya. But, as I look at you now. I realize no matter what reality I find myself in. I love you in all of them. Takeru offered his hand to Meiya, and she tentatively took it. Takeru pulled her up to stand with him. "Takeru," Meiya closed her eyes as two tears gently slid down her cheeks. Takeru pinched her chin, tilted her head, and pressed his lips against Meiya's.
Takeru parted and pulled back, their lips a breath away. "Meiya," Takeru searched her cerulean eyes.
"I Love you, Takeru,' Meiya confessed, "I have always loved you." Takeru wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed Meiya with all the longing of 20 years. Their lips massaged one another gently, and Takeru pressed Meiya close to him. "Takeru," Meiya parted, her breath hot and her lips swollen from the kiss. "Make me yours; make me your woman, Takeru."
"Meiya!" Takeru, losing all his inhibitions pushed Meiya onto her bed. He followed atop her and kissed her neck. Then, he slipped his hand into her Kimono to grasp her fully.
"T-Takeru," Meiya gasped, a blissful sigh escaping her lips. Meiya grabbed the hem of his sleeping shirt and pulled up. "Takeru!" Meiya gasped. She pressed her palm, feeling the solid muscle of his stomach. "When, ah, Takeru!" Meiya immediately lost the ability to form cohesive thoughts. She instinctively closed her legs around the offending hand that snuck between them. Takeru smiled against her skin and used his free hand to pull her Kimono off. "I love you," he whispered in her ear.
"Takeru," Meiya looked into his eyes and captured his lips. Meiya felt her heart soar, and her body responded to Takeru's every menstruation. Time ceased to matter, and Takeru took Meiya for his own as many times as their bodies allowed.
11:00 PM
Takeru looked at the alarm clock on Meiya's bedside table. He was cutting it close. He wasn't sure if he was gonna fade away at midnight. Takeru smirked sardonically, thinking about a European folk tale about a magic pumpkin or something. Takeru sighed and turned, looking at Meiya. Her hair was free of her ribbon. Instead, it spilled free like a river of silk that glistened in the moonlight. I hope my other self gets even a trace of these memories. Takeru sighed and stood up. He collected his clothes and placed one last kiss on Meiya's cheek.
Takeru dressed in his sleeping clothes and lay down on his bed. He grabbed the CD with the equation tightly. Finally, the fatigue of the emotions and the lovemaking caught up with him. Takeru drifted to sleep.

Takeru shivered, feeling cold metal pressed against his cheek. He groaned and turned on his back, feeling stiff and exhausted. Takeru squinted his eyes open before shutting them instantly against the harsh light. He lifted his hands to cover his eyes and came face to face with a CD. "What the?" Takeru sat up and saw a young girl and an admittedly attractive woman staring at him warily.
"Shirogane," the attractive woman said.
"Guh," Takeru forced his eyes shut as images flooded his mind in an instant.
"I'm back?" Takeru looked down and was in his flight jacket, black shirt, and blue pants and boots. "I'm back," Takeru sighed and lifted the CD to Yuuko.
"Did you succeed?" Yuuko took the CD apprehensively.
"Yeah, the other you delivered," Takeru rubbed his head.
"Good, you should get some rest, even if you fell asleep in the other world. In this world, you might just have pulled out an all-nighter.
"yeah," Takeru said simply. He crossed his legs and felt his body shudder. Goodbye, other Takeru; I hope I left you enough for you to get your act together. Takeru felt tears sting his eyes. He made his choice; there was no going back for him. But, the night with Meiya and the last conversation he would ever have with Sumika. It all just caught up with him. Takeru got to bid farewell to the life that once was. "Hey, Yuuko Sensei, Kasumi."
"…" Kasumi looked down. She did not need her powers to tell Takeru was grieving his final farewell.
"Shirogane," Yuuko crossed her arms, looking at Takeru's back. His body trembled, desperately holding the sobs in.
"Sorry, do you mind giving me a minute? I just gotta catch my breath." Takeru gritted his teeth and shut his eyes tight.
"Go on, Yashiro," Yuuko nodded, and Kasumi nodded, leaving the lab.
Yuuko placed the CD on the table and walked up behind Takeru. "Now, don't get the wrong idea." Yuuko knelt behind him and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I'm just returning the favor. We are partners, after all."
Takeru's lips pulled back in a tight smile. "Yeah, that we are," Takeru said before he let a sob escape. Then, another, and another until he was crying.

"1st Lieutenant Takamura, I was not expecting you." Tsukuyomi saluted the Fudai. Though what gave her pause was the fact that 1st Lieutenant Takamura was carrying the Shogun's Katana.
"Thank you, 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi. I wish I came bearing better news." Yui put down her salute after Mana. "Might we speak in private 1st Lieutenant Tsukuyomi?"
"Yes, I would much like to hear what brings you to a UN base." Tsukuyomi turned to her subordinates. "Kaimyo, Tomoe, come with us. Ebisu, inform Brigadier General Radhabinod that 1st Lieutenant Takamura has arrived on the Shogun's orders."
"Yes, Mam!" The three girls saluted. Ebisu then promptly left.
"Please follow me to my quarters, 1st Lieutenant Takamura." Tsukuyomi led Yui to the elevator and to the officer's quarters. She showed her inside her room and locked the door behind them. The other two girls stood guard outside. "Have a seat,' Tsukuyomi pointed to the desk provided for all officers.
Yui nodded and took her seat while Tsukuyomi sat behind her desk. "First, allow me to begin by stating my transfer orders. As of 2400 hours, I am now assigned under your Command at the 19th Independent Guard Flight. Second, when the time is right, I am to deliver her Highness's words to the commander of this Base."
"what would these words be?" Tsukuyomi raised a brow.
"I'm sorry, I am duty-bound to withhold them until they are required." Yui bowed apologetically.
"Of course, forgive my impertinence." Tsukuyomi threaded her fingers together. "Then perhaps you can answer me this. What is happening in Tokyo?" Tsukuyomi glared at the space behind Yui.
Yui gripped the Shoguns Katana tighter, her leather gloves groaning in protest. "More than I know, I must shamefully admit." Yui pursed her lips. "I was so busy trying to restart the XFJ project I completely missed the lines being drawn."
"I have been away from the Shogun's presence. How does she fare?" Tsukuyomi's lips pulled down.
"We met briefly; though the Shogun remains in good health, she worries for her countrymen." Yui confided in Tsukuyomi. "There is a faction entrenching itself within the Military. The Special Tactics Studies Group was small initially, but after the forced relocation debacle." Yui trailed off.
"What do you know of this group?" Tsukuyomi shifted her eyes to Yui's.
"Frightenly little; however, you can't walk through the Ministry of Defense without running into a member. They wear a pin of the old Imperial Flag." Yui brought Yuuhi's Katana up. "I was able to gather some information before my abrupt departure. They have members across our Military, and a nasty rumor is going around that around half the forces on the Niigata Defensive Line belong to the group." Yui sighed, frustrated with her inability to do more.
"I heard a rumor of my own here at Yokohama Base." Tsukuyomi frowned and swiveled her chair to stare out the window in her room. "This morning, the American's 7th fleet anchored at Sagami Bay. It is also believed that spotters saw F-22 Raptors performing Maneuvers over Kanagawa."
Yui's eyes widened, remembering the letter from the Imperial Diet. But could this mean the Diet invited the Americans over in secret? Did the Shogun herself go behind the Diet and ask for their assistance? Yet, just how strong is the Special Tactics Studies Group if that was the case?
"I see by the tight look on your face that you were already aware of this." Tsukuyomi closed her eyes.
"No," Yui raised her hand. "That is to say, their arrival coincides too much with the orders I was given." Yui crossed her arms, gripping the ceremonial Katana tightly. "While I still cannot divulge my orders, the American's presence has me thinking of two dangerous possibilities."
"Can you share these thoughts?" Tsukuyomi asked, curious.
"Yes," Yui nodded, "the troubling thoughts are that someone in the highest forms of government secretly asked for American aid." Yui looked at the Katana pointedly.
Tsukuyomi's eyes widened; the implication made her stand abruptly. "Surely you don't mean?" Tsukuyomi gritted her teeth, unable to finish the thought.
"It is only a possibility. I cannot rule out someone else's involvement. But, I'm afraid that is all I can say on the matter." Yui rubbed her temples.
"Then let us hope you are wrong," Tsukuyomi sighed. "Anyways, please forgive my rudeness, 1st Lieutenant Takamura. I shall make sure Brigadier General Radhabinod provides you with adequate quarters."
"Thank you, Mam." Yui sighed, "I could really use a soft bed right about now."
November 30, 2001
Takeru sighed. This was not going to be an easy conversation. He leaned forward, looking down at Yokohoma Base and the city ruins below. Well, at least he had an icebreaker. Takeru grinned and looked at the foil-wrapped sandwich on the railing. Takeru waited for another five minutes before hearing the roof door open, and someone walked next to him. "Yo, Ayaimne," Takeru waved at her.
"Shirogane, why did you call me up here?" Ayamine crossed her arms.
"I got called away on that assignment by Yuuko Sensei, and my duties kept getting in the way." Takeru turned and leaned back on the railing. "So, I wanted to ask you in person. What was that illegal letter about?"
Ayamine stiffened, "bad poetry."
"I thought it was more depressing than lousy," Takeru shrugged. "How about an incentive?" Takeru grinned and tossed Ayamine the foiled-wrapped sandwich.
"It's warm," she observed. But then she got a whiff of it in her nostrils, and her eyes widened with wonder.
"It's a new creation, you tell me what's up, and I'll show you how to make Yakisoba sandwiches." Takeru winked.
"Shirogane, you're crafty." Ayamine turned to unwrap the sandwich.
"What can I say? I like to bribe my friends into gossiping." Takeru shrugged good-naturedly.
"So," Takeru shifted his eyes at her. "Want to share?"
Ayamine narrowed her eyes at him. "Mmm." she pulled her food closer.
"Hah, not what I meant," Takeru lifted his arms in surrender.
"I know," Ayamine looked down. "Why do you want to know?"
"Maybe I'm just a jealous man," Takeru shrugged.
Ayamine blushed and looked at the sandwich. "I only read it because you left it open on my desk." Ayamine turned to Takeru. "I never read any of the letters he sent. I left them all sealed."
"Ayamine," Takeru looked at her lilac eyes.
"He's a coward," Ayamine glared at the air.
"Hm," Takeru crossed his arms. "I can't speak for anyone but myself." Takeru pushed off the railing and walked up to Ayamine. "Just know, whatever happens, I will always be here for you, Ayamine."
"Shirogane," Ayamine mumbled. Her eyes shone with emotion as Ayamine embraced him. "You're pretty cool sometimes." Ayamine pushed her face into his chest.
"Huh?" Takeru raised a brow and wrapped his arms around her waist.
"Don't worry about it," she smiled and pulled back from him. "Shirogane," Ayamine looked away.
"Yeah?" Takeru took a step back.
"If I ask you to," Ayamine started.
"I trust you, Ayamine."
"Shirogane," Ayamine looked at him wide-eyed.
"You may not be the easiest person to talk to. But I know you'd never hurt any of us." Takeru grinned. "I'll bet on you any day, so trust us a little more, okay?"
"Shirogane," Ayamine grabbed her arm, not unlike Chizuru. "Do you know about my father?"
Takeru vaguely recalled her father being in jail. Though he could not identify the reason why.
"Sorry, can't say I do." Takeru shrugged apologetically.
"My father disobeyed his orders," Ayamine shut her eyes tightly. "He ignored his duty, and we lost many because of it."
Then it clicked in Takeru's mind, the so-called tragedy of Gwanju. Where many Japanese soldiers lost their lives. Yuuhi had told him about it in his previous life. "I see," Takeru sighed.
"He was tried as a deserter and sentenced to life in prison." Ayamine scowled, griping her arm tighter.
"By Class Rep's old man, right?" Takeru hummed.
Ayamine nodded slowly. "I don't hate her for it if that's what you think."
"I can't begin to comprehend your situation," Takeru crossed his arms. "But, no matter what happens, remember your friends." Takeru walked up to her and put his hand on her shoulder. "We'll meet whatever comes our way together." Takeru smiled and squeezed her shoulder once. "When the time comes, don't hesitate. Act on your heart, and you won't have to send letters expressing your sorrow and regret." Takeru smiled encouragingly before taking his leave.
Ayamine watched Takeru disappear behind the roof door. She wrapped her arms around herself and looked at the horizon. "Sagiri," Ayamine said his name. The warmth it once held was no longer there. "Takeru," She whispered his name as if afraid Takeru would hear it and turn back. "I forgot how warm it feels to say the name of someone you care about deeply." Ayamine's lips pulled up in a ghost of a smile. "No, I won't live my life on old regrets." Ayamine dug out the letter Takeru had read from her back pocket. She brought it, assuming he had read it. " If I did that, I would never be able to stand beside Takeru." She ripped up the letter and let its bits disperse in the wind.

HMS Yangtze Ballistic Submarine COSEAN 11th Fleet
The crew of the Yangtze wasn't in particularly great spirits this morning. Severe weather conditions had made surfacing sporadic, and their subsequent supply run was running late. While they weren't in dire straights. The more common commodities of a sailor's life were starting to get low. Coffee was worth a month's wages, and cigarettes were worth 2 months. Hell, if you had alcohol, the female sailors loosened their standards on how handsome a man was for a glass. Yet, for Ensign Shangxiang Sun, serving as the submarine's sonar operator, her worries were much direr. "H-hey, Ji-Woo, come here, please."
Sun's childhood friend and proverbial partner in crime left her station and hunched over Sun's shoulder. "Yeah?"
"Please, please tell me I'm sleep-deprived," Sun reached over and turned the Sonar on again.
"!" Ji-Woo felt her heart seize, and she tightened her grip on Sun's shoulder. "How long has this been happening?"
"I checked the logs. Seo-Jun saw the tip of it last night and didn't report it." Sun grimaced and watched something else happen. "Oh god, it's splitting."
"How the hell did we miss this?" Ji-Woo hissed, looking around the bridge. "Run it through projections." Ji-Woo rubbed her temples.
"One's going southwest; the other is heading southeast." Sun pursed her lips and ran the planned trajectory.
"The main body is headed to Shimane, and the second smaller one is moving straight for. Oh god, it's going to Sadogashima Hive." Sun felt sweat run down the back of her neck.
"When did Command schedule the operation?" Ji-Woo asked.
"Weather's been doing the Laser Class job swatting drones out of the sky. Were the closes pair of eyes. I don't think Command knows shit about this." Sun leaned back in her chair.
"What about the Empire?" Ji-Woo undid the top button of her uniform. She suddenly felt hot and uncomfortable.
"The Japanese 2nd fleet returned to Japan yesterday." Sun looked at Ji-Woo.
"I have to tell the Captain," Ji-Woo pushed off Sun's station and B-lined for the Captain.
"Captain!" Ji-Woo saluted Captain Yi-Sun Sin as he read a report at the center of the bridge.
"Ensign Jin-Woo, what do you have for me?" Captain Yi-Sun tucked his clipboard under his armpit.
"Captain, it's better if you come to see it yourself," Ji-Woo looked nervously around the bridge. Captain Yi-Sun narrowed his eyes and nodded. He followed her to the Sonar, where he hunched over Ensign Sun.
"I want you both to assure me this isn't a malfunction right now." He gave them both pointed stares.
"Captain, I'm positive this isn't a malfunction." Sun was good at her job. Hell, she was an expert. She knew these readings were accurate.
"I need to get on the horn with COSEAN Naval command." Captain Yi-Sun stood up and moved immediately to the center of the bridge. "All hands on deck, prepare for surfacing!"
"Aye, aye, Captain!" The helmsmen looked back from his station. "Weather's bad up there. Are you sure about this?"
"I wouldn't ask this of you if I wasn't." Captain Yi-Sun stared severely at his helmsman. The young man in question nodded and returned to his post. The surfacing alarm blared across the Yangtze, and all crews braced as the further the sub ascended, the rougher the ocean water got. Finally, the Yangtze's nose broke the ocean floor before she righted herself on the turbulent sea. Captain Yi-Sun immediately went to the radio operator. "Get me COSEAN Naval Command right now."
"Aye, aye, Captain," the radioman complied. "Yangtze to COSEAN Naval Command, please respond."
Bzzzt
"I say again, Yangtze, to COSEAN Naval Command, please respond. Request priority transmission."
Bzzzt
"Static, weather ain't letting us through, Captain." The radioman slid his headset down to his neck.
"Try the 11th fleet," Captain Yi-Sun pursed his lips.
"Aye, Aye, Captain." The radioman switched channels and put his headset back on. "Yangtze transmitting to Carrier Bailong."
Bzzzt
"Transmit to any goddamn vessel in our vicinity. I don't care if it's civilian!" The Captain removed his cap and wiped his forehead.
"This is the HMS Yangtze COSEAN 11th fleet, transmitting on an open channel to anyone who can hear us. Please respond."
Bzzzt
The radioman closed his eyes and tried one last time. "I say again, this is HMS Yangtze COSEAN 11th fleet, is anyone out there…please." Both men waited with bated breath.
Bzzzt
"Were alone out here, Captain." The radioman shook his head.
"…" Yi-Sun stood back up and looked around his crew. They had all stopped their work and were looking at him. "Get me the whole crew," Yi-Sun grabbed the receiver on the control panel.
"You're on, Captain," the radioman nodded after a button press.
"Attention Yangtze personnel, this is your Captain speaking. At 0600 hours, a BETA herd from Gwangju entered the East China Sea. As we've all been made very aware this past few weeks. Severe weather has halted the latest COSEAN culling operation. Unfortunately, we were too late, and the BETA had a headstart on us due to an oversight." Captain Yi-Sun pulled the receiver from his mouth for a brief moment. He looked at the eyes of the crew gathered on the bridge. "Due to this unfortunate weather, long-range communications are down, and the predicted destination of the BETA appears to be Japan." Captain Yi-Sun had been there. He had personally stood on the Yingtze's deck and watched his country be lost to the BETA. He also watched the brave Japanese forces that gave their lives to allow Yi-Sun's countrymen to escape. The UN called it the Gwangju Tragedy, but every damn Korean serviceman called it for what it really was. The Heroic stand of Lieutenant General Ayamine.
"I know some of you are not Korean like myself, but I was at Gwangju watching my country be swallowed by the BETA. I also saw brave men and women from the Imperial Japanese Army give their lives so my countrymen could escape. Therefore, the Yangtze will abandon its patrol mission and set a course for Japan. I will allow the use of the escape sub for anyone who does not wish to participate." Captain Yi-Sun's hand tightened around the receiver. "At present, a Sonar scan estimates the first contact at an army size herd. The herd, however, has split into two. The first corps will land in Shimane, and the second will likely link up with the Sadogashima Hive and attack from there." The Captain took a deep breath before continuing. "We move in 30 minutes. If you wish to leave, see me by the end of that time frame." The Captain put the receiver back and motioned for the security standing by the bulkhead.
"Captain!" They saluted.
"Last man on Sonar was Ensign Seo-Jun, have him brought to my quarters before the 30 minutes." The Captain tapped both men on the shoulder.
"Aye, aye, Captain!" Both men turned and immediately left to fulfill their orders.
"XO Shang!" Captain Yi-Sun turned to his first officer.
"Captain!" Shang saluted.
"The bridges are yours; I'll be in my quarters." Yi-Sun nodded, patting him on the shoulder.
"Aye, aye, Captain." Shang nodded and smiled at his old friend.
Yi-Sun rubbed his face as the 30 minutes passed. The Captain was thinking of taking a swig from his reserve when someone knocked on his door. "Come in," Yi-Sun adjusted his uniform.
XO Shang entered and saluted Captain. "Captain, I'm here about the offer you made the crew."
"How many?" Yi-Sun asked promptly.
"Nobody, Captain, we're with you till the fat lady sings as the Americans say." XO Shang smirked.
Yi-Sun smiled before laughing. "Thank you, old friend."
"Captain," a security officer knocked on the open door.
"Come in; where is Ensign Seo-Jun." Yi-Sun sat up straight.
"Dead, Captain," the security officer's face grew somber. "It was suicide, and he left a note. I thought it best you saw it." The officer walked in and handed Yi-Sun the note.
Dear Captain Yi-Sun
My family, my two sons and my daughter, were starving in a refugee camp in Taiwan. However, before our deployment, I was approached by an American who offered my family full citizenship and a direct trip to America. He asked me to commit treachery against my comrades and fellow brothers in arms in the COSEAN Navy for that service. I acquiesced and shamefully sent our reports on BETA activity and weather to an American Agent. Before our last contact, when the weather predicted severe storms, I was told to falsify or simply not report any BETA movement. I believe it was the wishes of this American acting on behalf of his government to use a BETA attack to their advantage.
I cannot fathom why or what their plan is. However, as I write this, I prepare to face my ancestors in judgment. I do not ask for forgiveness, for none should be given. My family safely made it to America, where my sons and daughter are attending school. Despite my great shame, I cannot bring myself to regret my actions. As a father and husband, I have done what I thought was right for my family. But, as a Sailor of the COSEAN 11th fleet, I am a traitor and deserve a traitor's death. As my final act of retribution, this is the only bit of information I was able to extract from my American contact. The Americans are backing an insurrection within the Japanese Military. Please, act quickly, Captain Yi-Sun Sin. I watched our country fall to the BETA on the Yangtze's deck. Stop the Americans from bringing down the country of our hero Ayamine Shuukaku.
Godspeed, Ensign Seo-Jun Jin.
"Seo-Jung," Yi-Sun shut his eyes tightly and placed the letter on his desk. Everyone gathered was quiet. Finally, Captain Yi-Sun stood up, grabbed his cap, and donned it. "Gentlemen, to the bridge, we have a mission to fulfill."
The three men returned to the bridge. "Officer on deck!" a Sailor announced, and all stood and saluted.
Yi-Sun saluted in return, "to your station's sailors. Helmsman, turn us to port 135. Advance at 60 knots!"
"Aye, aye, Captain!" The helmsman smirked and got to work, "all hands brace for dive!"
The alarms inside the Yangtze blared, and Captain Yi-Sun took his place by the tactical display at the center of the bridge. Ancestors grant me strength and vessel speed to reach Japan before they shed each other's blood.
DUN DUN DUUUUN Okay, the next chapter starts the conclusion of the first act. Blood will be spilled, lives will be lost, and mankind will again be reminded in the face of their conflicting ideals that the BETA does not offer respite.
