Prompt: Football season

Were humans always this loud? Klaus growled as he took another gulp of his unpleasantly warm beer, barely resisting the urge not to compel the bellowing louts in the seats below him. He grit his teeth at the hollow popping noise the bleachers made all around him every time the insipid humans clumsily walked around.

"I haven't seen you this miserable since the Black Death made all of the peasants taste acidic," Elijah unexpectedly told him, mirth twinkling in his dark eyes as he sat down.

Stiffening slightly, Klaus flicked his gaze over his brother's impeccably tailored, double-breasted suit and said derisively, "And you look more out of place than the time you wandered into Woodstock."

The screeching of the humans along with the pedantic, off-key sounds of the band signified that the lumbering buffoons on the field must have made a favorable play. Pleased to see Elijah momentarily was distracted by the giggling teenage girls two rows behind them loudly whispering about 'Frowny McSexy Suit', he ventured a glance to the field, perfectly centered at the home team's side of the 50-yard line...where he knew she'd be.

Caroline was resplendent. She commanded the attention of the crowd like a warrior queen, and Klaus was irritated to see that he wasn't the only one mesmerized. She possessed a beauty that was undeniable, but it was her fiery spirit that captured his attention. And that of three-quarters of sections A-C, he inwardly grumbled.

Her blonde ponytail merrily bounced as she performed a complex maneuver from the top of the pyramid formation that displayed both her athletic prowess and agility, and he felt his breath catch as she favored the crowd with a blinding smile.

"What on earth possessed you to attend a local sports match," Elijah interjected, mercifully not realizing where Klaus' gaze had been fixed.

Klaus hastily took another gulp of his wretched drink, thoughts racing as he tried to land on a plausible excuse. "It's football season and in a useless town like Mystic Falls, there's limited sources of amusement. Besides, it's best to keep an eye on the doppelganger as mischief tends to stalk her almost more than those idiot Salvatores." At his brother's incredulous expression, he shrugged, adding nonchalantly, "The doppelganger's blood is a precious commodity, as you're aware."

Turning his attention back to the game, he pretended to be enthralled by the woefully ordinary players running to and fro, glimpsing the magnificent blonde out of the corner of his eye as Caroline ordered her underlings into another formation while she effortlessly vaulted to the center in a daring move that had him accidentally emitting an impressed noise he tried to disguise as a cough.

"So, you're here to monitor Elena because she is a vital ingredient to growing your hybrid army," his brother said skeptically.

"Obviously."

"The same Elena who dropped out of cheerleading prior to our arrival in Mystic Falls and is dining at the Mystic Grill as we speak," Elijah asked, his mocking tone making Klaus fervently wish he knew where Kol had hidden the daggers.

Bollocks. Not bothering to acknowledge the irritating grin his brother wore, he cast aside what was left of his dignity to fully gaze at her once more. Bloody hell. Caroline was performing a saucy little move that had the tiny hem of her cheerleading skirt flare out, showcasing those creamy thighs he'd drawn endlessly the night before.

With a sly smirk, he watched how she pointedly refused to look up in the stands where he was sitting. It was only a matter of time before she gave in. After all, she'd fearlessly chastised him like a vengeful harpy earlier that evening, calling him a 'sociopathic hybrid asshat who was serving Creepy Guy Living in His Mom's Basement vibes'. He wasn't entirely sure what her colorful tirade meant, but he intended to approach her again to find out.

Some sort of break during the game occurred, and his brother eyed him with a knowing smirk as Klaus hastily moved toward the field. Caroline was off to the side drinking from her water bottle, gracefully arching her back as she stretched. She was glorious. He faltered in his swagger as he debated the best way to approach her. Normally, he goaded her into some sort of amusing explosion of that fiery temper of hers, but he had yet to coax a more pleasant response. A creature as delightfully complex as Caroline couldn't be accosted by a clumsy attempt. She required finesse, and cleverly crafted dialogue by someone experienced in the art of seduction.

The bland quarterback suddenly jogged over to her, drawing a gentle smile from Caroline as she called him by name. Matt. What an utterly pedestrian name. Klaus involuntarily clenched his fist, momentarily forgetting the beer he was holding and managed to crush the plastic while soaking his shirt with the rest of his warm beer. Bollocks.

Klaus growled in annoyance, stepping in between the concession stand and several banners. He overheard Matt tell Caroline that he was about to be on something called academic probation and asked if she would tutor him. How dare the useless quarterback insult Caroline by using his stupidity as a means to flirt with her! Not to mention that ridiculous, childish nickname he'd thrust upon her. Care.

Clearly, she only agreed to assist the idiot boy out of a misplaced sense of duty. When would Caroline feel that sort of blind loyalty to him?

Klaus stomped toward the parking lot, muttering under his breath as he realized Elijah had followed him. His brother remained mercifully silent, and Klaus wondered if there was useless advice on the tip of his tongue he was bursting to share. When the dim-witted quarterback's dented blue and white truck came into view, Klaus shifted his gait slightly, just enough to catch the jagged corner of a piece of gravel with his boot. He kicked out with all of his Original strength, sending the gravel into the middle of the quarterback's windshield.

As the glass pleasantly shattered, a smug sense of satisfaction washed over him. His evening was looking up.

Elijah leaned in, his voice carrying a note of pride as he said, "I taught you that trick."
