Aya: This was, by far, the hardest one-shot I ever had to write. Not only did I have to write out poor Edo's death (sob), but I also watched this clip of ep. 50 on YouTube, and over and over I had to watch Edo die so I could get the lines right! But…I just felt like writing this, because I always thought about what Ed would've been thinking in those last few minutes.
Oh, yeah. Spoiler warnings…kinda late, eh heh…
Also: The song that plays when Ed dies, that piano song, if anybody has it, I would appreciate it so much if you could e-mail/send it to me. Please!
Enjoy.
"Needless to say, I never did like being replaced."
Edward stared into the face of his 'brother' as he felt the blade go through him. The shock prevented his brain from registering any real pain, but he could feel an
unbearable pressure as if he'd been punched in the gut. Blood was welling up inside his throat, and suddenly he couldn't breathe.
Envy threw the boy to the side, shifting the blade back into his arm. Edward lay there on the cold ballroom floor, unable to move, speak, or think coherently. All he was capable of doing was listen.
Listen to Roze scream, "Edward!"
to Alphonse cry out, "Nii-san!"
to Envy cackle in glee for his revenge
to the blood dripping from his mouth and wound onto the floor.
Gotta get to Al, he thought desperately. He couldn't let one wound stop him from saving his brother. Even as he thought, crimson blood spurted out as he coughed.
That was when it hit him.
You're dying, Ed.
No.
You failed, Ed.
No…
It's your fault, Ed.
No!
You're abandoning them, Ed!
No!
YOU'RE GOING TO DIE, EDWARD!
NO!
The blood loss was getting to him, turning his thoughts fuzzy and vague. His eyesight was blurring, fading in and out, making it so he couldn't focus on anything.
"When we die, our bodies return to the earth, to make flowers and grass."
Teacher's words echoed in his brain. He wouldn't return to the earth. He was going to stay in this hellish city, rotting.
His brother was going to be sacrificed for the one thing they had searched for most.
Roze…that beautiful girl…her body was going to be taken away…only to rot in a matter of months…
Edward had a very strange sensation then…he felt as though he was kind of…floating away…as if something had picked him up and was carrying him somewhere.
He blinked, and found himself in the presence of the one thing homunculi and those who committed the Deadly Sin feared the most.
The Gate.
The doors opened slowly, and Edward braced himself for the long, black hands to spill out, to attach themselves to his body, to drag him into the never ending hell he deserved…for all the sins in
his life…
Instead of hands, there was light. And his mother. Not Sloth, with her dark hair, violet eyes, and
pale skin. No, it was Mom, with her jade eyes, chestnut hair, and loving smile.
"Edward."
Edward stood up as Mom opened her arms, beckoning him. Suddenly, he didn't feel sixteen anymore…he felt the way he did as a child, innocent, untainted, as he ran into her embrace, feeling
the warmth and security he had long been deprived of. Then Edward began to cry. He was crying
for Alphonse, for Roze, but most importantly, he was crying with joy, for he finally found his mother
again.
"They'll be here soon," Mom whispered.
Then the doors closed.
