Olympic Valley, CA
When I was up and out of bed, I quickly tossed my hair up into a ponytail before venturing out into the living room of the house. It was bustling already; Marci in the living room with the babies, Trini cooking breakfast in the kitchen, and Aisha and Adam working on some last finishing touches. I saw she had my bouquet in her hand and that she was sewing little rhinestones into the lace around the stems. Adam was ironing out a dress shirt on the ironing board in the corner of the room. He smiled at me as I entered, waving his free hand. "Morning!" He called out, spritzing the shirt with a spray bottle.
"Morning. Happy wedding day!" I said, walking over and giving him a hug. "Are you excited?"
"Pretty sure I'm going to throw up." He replied, smiling brightly at me. "Nonetheless, I am excited to get down that aisle."
"That's how I was." Aisha said, pulling thread through one of the lace pieces. "I beelined it right up the aisle to Rocky just to get the whole thing started. It's scary up until the moment you get up there and then you forget all about the room full of people staring at you."
"What was your wedding like to Nick?" Marci asked, walking in with Lily in her arms. I snorted.
"Everything short of a tacky Las Vegas wedding. We decided to just up and get married quickly. I think we had like twenty people there, mostly his family. His mother told me that I had to wear her old dress but it was this hideous thing that luckily a seamstress in town was able to make something bearable. It was super hot, the best man was drunk and probably high, and I knew right away that we should have waited. And the reception? It was dinner at a pizza place where we met. All signs told me to run that day but I was a fool and stayed."
"To be young and dumb." Trini said, walking in with a plate full of sausage and bacon. "Trust me. Not everyone marries the right person the first time. My mom was married to some guy before my Dad who treated her like an ATM. It wasn't until she met my father in college that she realized she had married the one right before her soulmate. She dumped him and married my father two days after her divorce was legal. We just like to tell people that it didn't happen." She smiled, getting the bowl of scrambled eggs from the counter.
"I don't blame her there." Aisha said, finishing my bouquet and setting it in the window. Standing, she walked over and scooped Matteo up off the floor and brought him over to the high chair by the table. She strapped him in and he giggled when she put some eggs on the tray in front of him. Reaching over, I took Lily from Marci and sat in the chair in front of me. "By the time Lily and Matteo get married, they'll know for sure they are soulmates." Aisha joked, winking at me. Marci gasped, smiling.
"That would be so adorable! They could be chubby little soulmates right from the vagina." She said, sighing with a big smile on her face. I snorted.
"I'd save that for your speech at their reception." Adam said, walking over and stealing a sausage link. "It'll go over well, I'm sure."
"As the aunt of the betrothed, I will have an important part in the wedding. Best believe I will have a killer speech as well." Marci sat down, grabbing a plate.
"I'm sure Lily will keep that in mind." I said, kissing Lily's cheek. She smiled up at me as I gave her the bottle on the table. "So, what's the schedule here?"
"We have exactly three hours before the ceremony starts." Aisha said, grabbing a plate and putting some food on it. "You're going to get your hair done right after breakfast, Trini, Marci, and I following after that. Then everyone will be getting dressed and getting final touches on the ceremony area. The boys will be getting here about half an hour before the ceremony is supposed to start and will help the guests find their parking and seats. Then the babies will get dressed after a quick nap. And promptly at noon, Adam and Billy will be walking down the aisle."
"Well, you and I will be walking down the aisle." Adam said, smiling over at me. "Billy and Tommy will be up at the altar waiting for us."
"I can't believe the day is finally here." I said. "Seems like it was only yesterday that we were kids trying to figure out the world. Now, you two are getting married." Everyone sat in their seats, food in front of them. Matteo shoved fistfulls of food into his mouth, enjoying every taste of it. Marci kept trying to sneak Lily tiny bites of eggs when I wasn't looking, pretending she was just playing with her. I eyed her, knowing full well that she was full of it.
After eating, the plan went into full motion. Aisha shoved me into a chair in the bathroom while Aisha put the babies down for a nap. Aisha worked on my hair while Trini went out to make sure that the caterer and the DJ had everything they needed to set up. When she returned, she sat in a chair next to me while Marci straightened and then curled her hair. Aisha curled my hair, pinning the top part into a fancy bun. The lower part, she did looser curls that hung down my back. She added twists in gems into my locks, them seeming to sparkle brightly under the fluorescent light of the bathroom. Trini finished the same time as me and Aisha hopped in the chair next. Adam asked me to help him pull his hair back in a tight ponytail and gel any stray pieces that might try to get away. It was an easy task and soon, we were all primed and ready to go. Marci and I headed to our room and got changed, Aisha and Trini went to theirs as well.
"I love that dress." Marci said as I zipped up the back of my formal pink gown. It was a short a-line skirt with a muted pink color to it, lace over the skirt that went up to the body of the dress. There were small straps that held it in place and it hugged my figure in a comfortable fashion. Marci had chosen to wear purple, a color that no one would be wearing due to a lack of a purple ranger. She had done her homework, making sure she would be the only one rocking the color. She had even dyed the tips of her hair purple to match in true Marci fashion.
"Thanks. So, you'll be happy to know I've decided to tell Tommy the truth today." I said, sliding my diamond stud earrings into my lobes. She looked over at her shoulder at me as she pulled her shoes on.
"Seriously? That's great! When are you going to do it? Here?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No. Today is still all about Adam and Billy. I decided that it could wait until we are back at the house. I just know I want to do it sooner rather than later now. So, we won't be staying the night here."
"Want me to keep Lily again so you two can have your time alone?" She asked. I shook my head.
"No. I think he's going to want to be able to see her once he finds out. Thank you though. I'm not going to lie and say I'm not terrified. It feels right now, though. I know I should have said it sooner but at least I'm going to do it today." I sighed. "Hopefully, he doesn't hate me for it."
"He could never hate you, Kim. Sure, he might get angry but there's no way he's going to start hating you. Especially since he'll have everything he's ever wanted."
After getting dressed, we ran out to make sure everything in the area where the ceremony was going to be taking place was ready. Flowers and lace were tied at the end of each row, white petals lining the aisle on each side. There was an archway made between two trees, white fabric and flowers decorating it. Everything was in place and ready for the show to begin. I saw that cars were beginning to show up and spotted Tommy's truck pulling in as we headed back inside. He waved at me through the window as he climbed out, sending me a wink. I returned it before getting Lily's dress from my room to start getting her ready. She was going to be the cutest little flower girl in her white dress, a pink sash around her midriff. Matteo had a little suit that was black and had a yellow and red pocket square with it. He looked dashing as Aisha and Marci worked to wiggle his little round body into it. He wasn't having much fun during the process but afterwards, he giggled brightly up at his mother as she took pictures of him. I tied a pink bow around the top of Lily's head before setting her into the chair.
"They are too cute!" Aisha squealed, smiling down at the two. She was in a yellow cocktail dress that flowed to the floor. It made her skin look almost golden in comparison. Trini was also sporting yellow, her dress a shorter number with short sleeves on her shoulders. Adam walked out of the bedroom, adjusting his cufflinks as Marci and Aisha worked to get Matteo and Lily loaded up into the small wagon they'd be riding down the aisle in. I smiled at Adam, seeing his black suit fitting his form sharply. He wore a royal blue tie with his tuxedo, Billy sporting a blue suit with a black bowtie to match.
"How handsome." I said, adjusting his tie for him. "I guess the frog did turn into a prince afterall."
"A gay one." He said, smirking down at me.
"Who doesn't like a twist ending?" I said, shrugging my shoulders. "I just want you and Billy to be happy together forever."
"We're going to be." He said, nodding. "I have a feeling that this is just what we both need, ya know? It's crazy to compare us to who we are when we are younger but even then, I can see where this was just where we were meant to end up."
"I'm happy for you too. You deserve this." I lowered my hands.
"Hey." He said, putting his hands on my shoulders. "It's going to happen for you too. We aren't the only ones who found our soulmates fighting evil aliens in metal dinosaurs."
"Woah. Metal dinosaurs?" Marci asked. "You guys had dinosaurs?!" I sighed, rolling my eyes.
"I will tell you all about it tomorrow." I said, glancing over at her.
"It's time!" Aisha said, looking at her watch. "Let's get these boys married!"
Soft music was playing as we carried the wagon with the babies down the steps. Trini made sure that there was no one around as we made our way over to the area we would be waiting in. Once we were there, we made sure the babies were all ready and in the wagon safely. Trini gave Adam a kiss before heading into the ceremony area to sit with Jason. Aisha would be with us until Adam was at the altar with me, making sure everyone hit their cue.
"Alright, girl. Your time to shine." Aisha said, turning to Marci. She nodded, grabbing the handle of the wagon. Since both babies were too little to fulfil their duties of ring bearer and flower girl, it would be up to Marci to pull them to do their jobs for them. Aisha handed her a small basket with fake petals in it before she headed up the aisle. The rings were tucked into a small compartment on the wagon for safe keeping. We watched as she dragged the wagon behind her and rained petals down as she went. I caught sight of Tommy at that moment, him smiling at the sight of Marci and Lily. He wore a black suit jacket, a white button up shirt and a green necktie. His hair was pulled back but he hadn't straightened it, the curls at the bottom of the ponytail. He was handsome as ever and I prayed that by the end of the day, he would actually still be smiling.
"Your turn." Aisha said, holding out my bouquet to me. "Walk in slowly together and make sure you smile."
"We'll try." Adam said, holding his arm out to me. I looped mine with it, making sure he was on the right side of the aisle.
"Are you ready for this?" I asked.
"As I'll ever be." He replied, smiling at me. Aisha signalled to the DJ that Adam was going to be walking and the music faded out into a gentle version of the wedding march. Everyone craned their necks to see up the aisle as we started to walk forward. Adam and I smiled as we passed people, keeping our strides together. I felt him tense up as we were half way down, his eyes meeting Billy's. At the moment, mine met Tommy's and I felt that all too familiar feeling of jelly in my knees. He shot me a wink that caused my cheeks to blush as we neared the altar.
"Pretty sure Tommy is flirting with me." Adam said softly, grinning over at me. I laughed, nodding.
"Think so too." We came to a stop at the altar where Billy, Tommy, and one of Adam and Billy's friends were standing. Since gay marriage wasn't actually legal in California, they had asked someone to stand up and marry them. Adam took his place in front of Billy while I stood to the side behind Adam. Marci was sitting in the front room with the wagon in front of her. I saw Lily was dozing off while Matteo chomped on his hand, drool running down his chin. I noticed Aisha slip into the pew next to Rocky who was sitting with Jason and Trini. Zack was there as well, all of them smiling up from the second row behind Billy's father and grandmother.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union of Adam Park and William Cranson." Their friend said, smiling between the two of them. He continued on with his speech, speaking about love and the responsibility they had to one another. My focus went from the ceremony to Tommy who's gaze never broke mine. I allowed myself to think about our wedding, one that could possibly happen after I tell him the truth about Lily and him. Perhaps he will look right past it and ask me to make it official. Could I be naive to consider that as a possibility? It was a nice thought, one that I imagined during their ring exchange exchange. Adam took Billy's hands in his.
"I, Adam, vow to spend the rest of my life with you. I also vow to ensure that you are happy, safe, and warm in the home we build together. I don't know what the future will hold for us but I know that it will be one adventure I get to travel with you for. I am honored to call you my husband and my soulmate for the rest of my life. I love you will ever fiber of my being and I can't wait to begin the next chapter of our story together." Adam said, causing tears to form in my eyes. Billy smiled at him, the sun shining off his glasses.
"I, Billy, solemnly swear to honor you in every sentiment a person is capable of. I vow to provide commitment, compassion, stability, and humility throughout our time here on Earth as we venture this journey together. Our unity is a symbol of my love for you that I hold in my heart, one that will burn for eternity" Billy said. Only Billy could make his wedding vows sound technical.
"It's my great honor to present to you Mr. and Mr. Adam and Billy Cranston-Park. You may now kiss your husband!" Their friend exclaimed. Everyone cheered as Adam and Billy leaned in and sealed the deal with a kiss. I wiped at the tears that were streaming down my face as I clapped. When they pulled away, they headed up the aisle. I stepped forward, meeting Tommy where they had just been standing.
"You okay?" He asked, taking my hand in his. I nodded.
"It was the perfect wedding." I sniffled, smiling up at him.
"It sure was."
After the ceremony, the photographer had our group go into a little clearing by some trees to take pictures. Adam and Billy had requested that our entire group come for these. We rushed through the ones with the kids, both babies beginning to grow antsy in their dress clothes and the constant posing. Marci kept them occupied in the wagon as we did our pictures, our group taking a group shot at the end. Billy and Adam went off with the photographer then to take their own private pictures. Our group took the opportunity to head to the reception tent to find our reserved tables. Jason, Trini, Zack, Aisha, Rocky, Marci, Tommy and I were all at the table closest to Adam and Billy's private table. People were milling around the table with some appetizer food on it, enjoying their free drinks while they waited for the grooms to arrive. Marci came into the tent with the babies, both of them in clean diapers. I had to give her some credit on her babysitting skills. Maybe she was the one I needed to hire for the summer to watch Lily for me while I worked.
"There's my girl." Tommy said, taking Lily out of the wagon. "You look just like a little princess." He nuzzled her nose with his, making my ovaries shift into overdrive.
"She sure does." I said, fixing her dress in the back. The music playing over the sound system changed and Adam and Billy appeared in the doorway. The DJ announced them into the tent and the two danced in, holding hands. They went right to the dance floor where the upbeat music changed over into the song they had picked for their first dance, You and Me by Lifehouse. Tommy and I stood off to the side of the tent with Lily, watching the two slow dance together. I took pictures on my digital camera, wanting to remember the moment.
"They look so happy." He said, putting a hand on the small of my back. I nodded.
"I know. I'm happy for them. I'm glad they found their way to each other."
"Yeah." I shifted, seeing that Tommy was looking into my eyes. At that moment, the DJ announced that dinner was to be served. Tommy and I headed back to the table and I fed Lily her bottle while we waited for our food to get to the table. The DJ walked over to our table, a microphone in hand.
"Are you two the witnesses?" He asked, looking at Tommy and I. Tommy nodded. "You'll be doing your speeches once everyone is seated for dinner. Keep this right at your table and I'll signal you when it's time."
"Thanks." Tommy said, taking the microphone. Everyone made their ways to their seats and waiters began to carry large trays of food for the tables. There was chattering and the sound of utensils on china as people filled their plates. Adam and Billy waved at our table as they made their own plates from the trays at their table. Tommy made my plate for me since I was still holding on to Lily who seemed to be falling asleep in my arms. Once the noise level had calmed down, the music faded out and the DJ came over the speakers.
"The grooms had asked their witnesses to make their toasts." He said, his voice sounding like he belonged on the radio. Tommy grabbed the mic and pointed it at me. I took it, trading him Lily. Standing, I grabbed my speech I had written from my purse and brought the microphone to my mouth.
"Hi, everyone. My name is Kimberly and I am Adam and Billy's friend. I've known Adam since he moved to Angel Grove in high school and I've known Billy since we were in diapers pretty much. I remember one time when I think it was first grade, Billy was getting bullied by this idiot in our class. He didn't have the heart to tell the teacher or his Dad because he didn't want to worry anyone. One day, this kid called him four eyes and I walked right up to him and punched him in the nose." People laughed. "Might not have been my best moment but I made it clear not to mess with Billy. He told me that day that he didn't want to use violence on anyone because he felt the purpose of life was to teach others in a manner they haven't been taught before. The bully only knew violence and anger because it was all he had been taught. Billy has a way of teaching me things, even when I'm not asking him to. When I first met Adam, I knew he was going to be a good friend. I've always known I can depend on him in times where I needed him without even having to worry about him telling other people or not coming to help out. When I moved back here, he was one of the first people to make sure I had everything I needed and helped me deal with a panic attack. I've never met such a sweet and kind hearted person before and I am so glad that he is the one that Billy decided to fall for. When I found out that the two of them were together, I was thrilled. I was there when they got engaged and I am so happy to be standing here with them now as they celebrate their love together. Adam and Billy, I love the both of you and I wish you nothing but the best. Thank you for allowing Lily and I to be a part of your day and your lives. I couldn't ask for better uncles for her. Well, besides the rest of these knuckleheads." I said, smiling at Jason, Rocky, and Zack. There was polite clapping as I sat down. Tommy handed me Lily before he stood up and took the microphone.
"Hello. My name is Tommy and I've known Adam and Billy both since high school. When Billy asked me to stand with him today, I was surprised since he had other friends he knew longer he could have asked. I am honored he asked me though. I was there when Adam and Billy first started dating and had been one of the few people to know they were together. It was hard seeing them have to hide it because of the way our world is and how people react to things that don't concern them. I am elated that they are able to be open about their relationship and to be able to celebrate it with all of us 's not much about love that I know, being a single guy and all. I do know that it takes two people to make things work and it takes a lifetime together to determine if it was destined to be. I also know that once you have it, you try your hardest to never let it go. And if you do happen to let it go, you never let it get away from you again if it comes back to you." Tommy smiled over at me and I felt my breath hitch in my throat. Tommy raised his glass. "To Adam and Billy, I wish you many years of happiness and love. Thank you for sharing your love with us today." There was applause while everyone toasted. Tommy sat down and winked at me before taking a sip of his champagne on the table in front of him.
Dinner was wonderful, everything tasting delicious. Lily fell asleep and I propped her up in the wagon as we ate. Matteo was in his high chair, eating mashed potatoes. We all talked and joked during dinner, enjoying the time together. I was having fun with everyone, happy to see the pure joy on Adam and Billy's face as they had their own private conversation at their table. As everyone finished their dinner, plates were cleared and people began to head to the dance floor. A waiter came and cleared our plates, Zack excusing himself to find someone to dance with. Aisha and Rocky took the chance to dance as well, leaving Matteo with Marci. Trini excused herself to make sure everything was going well on the grounds. This left me at the table with Tommy and Jason.
"Wanna dance?" Tommy asked, smiling at me.
"Actually," Jason said, standing. "I'm going to take this first one on you." Jason held his hand out to me and I took it, knowing he wasn't going to take no for an answer.
"I'm next." Tommy grinned, sitting back in his chair. Jason pulled me to my feet and walked me out to the dance floor where a slow song was starting. He put his hand on my waist and I rested mine on his shoulders.
"I notice that Tommy still isn't informed." He said, raising an eyebrow at me.
"I know. It's changing tonight." I said, smiling at him. "Once we're back home, I'm going to tell him. I just don't want to chance a scene here."
"Are you sure?" I nodded. "What changed your mind?"
"Honestly? Zordon." I replied. He looked at me like I had three heads.
"You'll have to explain." He said.
"I dreamt about him last night and he told me that I was unfairly treating Tommy the way I was because of what Nick did to me. I know he isn't Nick but I was acting like he was going to hurt me the same way. I know he'd never do that. So, I decided that Tommy deserves to know the truth and the right to be able to raise his daughter knowing she is his daughter." Jason smiled.
"Leave it to Zordon to teach us something in our dreams still." He said. "I'm glad. I know it's not easy but he's going to be a lot better off knowing the truth. You are too. You won't have to keep carrying this around with you anymore." I nodded.
"I know. I am nervous and scared but I can't keep pushing it off. I decided that I had to stop letting everyone tell me what I should do and just do what I know I should have done since I found out."
"Tommy told me, you know." Jason said, swaying us back and forth. "About that day in the theater." I paused, looking up at Jason in shock.
"What? Why would he tell you that?"
"He wasn't bragging or anything." He said in a reassuring tone. He had just come back from seeing you and he was upset. I asked him what was wrong and he told me that he was scared he had just put a nail in your coffin. Kim, if you could have seen the fear in his eyes at the idea he had caused something for Nick to hold against you. Especially something like that. And when Marci dragged you to our house that day, he was convinced that it had been the reason he had tried to kill you. But when I saw him attacking you that second time, I knew that Nick knew the truth then. I could see it in his eyes."
"It wasn't Tommy's fault." I said, shaking my head.
"It wasn't anyone's fault." Jason replied. "But Tommy has wanted what's best for you since the beginning, no matter the cost. Even if it meant never being with you again. He loves you."
"I know." I whispered. Looking up at Jason, I smiled. "I love him too, Jase. That's why I gotta tell him."
"Good." He said, smiling. "Any chance I could possibly catch a ride home with you two until Trini comes back with that van? I was going to stick around but I have some stuff I gotta do."
"Depends. Can you keep an eye on Lily so I can talk to Tommy alone when we get there?" I asked.
"I think I can manage a baby for an hour or two."
"Then it's a deal." The song ended and we walked back over to the table where Trini was sitting with Lily now. Tommy was gone and everyone else was still dancing, Marci holding Matteo on the dance floor.
"Where did Tommy go?" I asked. Trini pointed up near the table where they were serving alcohol. He returned, a drink for me in his hand.
"Thanks." I said, taking it. He sipped at a bottle of water since he would be driving. We sat and chatted with Trini and Jason while faster songs played. Adam and Billy cut the cake, smashing it into each other's faces as politely as possible. Cake and coffee was served to each table that was an incredible red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Once those plates were cleared away, another slow song came on. Tommy nearly flew out of his chair, holding his hand out to me.
"This one is mine." He said. I laughed, nodding as I stood up. I peeked at Lily who was sitting in Trini's lap now, Jason feeding her small tastes of frosting from a spoon. Tommy led me out to the dance floor as the chords to a Goo Goo Dolls song. He stopped on the back part of the dance floor, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling my close. I wrapped my hands around his neck and let him rock us to the beat of the music.
"Our song." I said, smiling up at him. The melody of Iris played, the words coming from the singer in a slow tempo.
"Oh, is it?" He asked, giving me a sheepish grin. I smiled, shaking my head.
"Glad to see you remember." I said.
"I remember everything when it comes to us." He said.
"Me too." I replied. I gazed up at him. Tommy was the same boy I had fallen in love with, just older and wiser. He was the most handsome person in my eyes and there was nothing that would change that for me. And even though I didn't know what would happen when I told him the truth, that feeling of hope refused to fade in my chest.
"Kimberly, I love you." He said, looking down at me. I was surprised at his admission, not hearing him say those words to me in a long time. I moved to say something but he pressed his finger to my lips. "Let me finish, okay? I know you've been through so much since coming back and I know that the both of us have been through a lot together too since you came back to town. It's been such a rollercoaster since that day but I would not trade a single moment with you for anything in the world. I know that we talked about getting back together and planned on trying when we were both ready. After yesterday though, I know that I will never be more ready as I am right now. I think you are too. I think it's time we try being together again and work our asses off at making this work this time around. I know it's scary and I know it's sooner than we discussed but I feel it in my heart that this is what is supposed to happen. There's no other reason why you stumbled back into town other than fate bringing us back together." He took my hands in his. "I love you and I want you back."
"Tommy…" I breathed, looking up at him. I wanted it too. I wanted to say yes and just ride off into the sunset together. I knew, though, that I couldn't just jump into this like I did with the sex yesterday. I couldn't start our relationship off on the foundation of a lie. "I think we should talk privately when we get back home."
"What? About what? Us?" He asked. I smiled.
"Well, that and some other things." He looked worried and I reached up, putting a palm on his cheek. "Don't fret, handsome. I agree with you. There's just some things we need to sort out before we jump into this blindly. I want it to work out and I want us to last. I want us to be able to stand up in front of everyone some day to declare our love. We can't do that if we rush into this without talking. Is that alright?" I asked.
"I'll get the truck." He said, kissing my cheek. I laughed, holding on to him so he couldn't run off.
"Not so fast. We can't run out yet. Plus, Jason is riding home with us. He's going to watch Lily for us while we talk." He nodded, stroking my cheek with his thumb. I put my hand over his, enjoying the feel of his palm against my cheek.
We stayed at the reception a little while longer, spending time with our friends dancing. Tommy danced with Lily to a slow song and I took about one hundred pictures of the sight. Around seven, everyone was thinning out and Tommy said he wanted to get going since we still had a two hour drive home. I suddenly wished we had chosen to stay here at the cabin but I knew that Adam and Billy would appreciate less people in the house and Aisha, Rocky, and Marci would be staying with Matteo as it was. Tommy and I said our well wishes to the grooms before heading to his truck. Jason gave Trini a kiss before jogging after us. Tommy buckled Lily into the middle of the backseat, making sure her car seat was secure. Jason climbed in next to her behind Tommy, pulling his suit jacket off as he did. I climbed in while Tommy put our overnight bags from the night before into the back of the truck. Jason pulled his cell phone out from his bag in the back and turned it on. He swore as Tommy got back into the truck.
"Still no signal. I swear the mountains block everything out here." He said, tossing the phone back into his bag.
"I know. Mine hasn't rang since we got here either." I said, setting my purse on the floor. Tommy started the truck, swinging out of the driveway carefully and heading down the driveway. "That was such a nice wedding. You and Trini need to speed things up already."
"Yeah, yeah. She told me that earlier. Maybe we can plan for next summer. We'll have to find a place since Adam and Billy keep stealing out thunder." Jason said from the back seat.
"Well, keep dragging your feet, man. It's bound to happen." Tommy said, smirking at him in the rear view mirror. I looked over my shoulder at Lily and saw she was focused on one of her toys connected to her car seat. She tried to bat at it but it was just out of her reach.
"Alright, Oliver. No comments from the single peanut gallery." Jason said. Tommy pulled out of the driveway and started towards town. The sun was beginning to set behind the mountains, the orange glow leaving streaks in the sky. The thick pine trees of the forest lined either side of the road as we drove. There were no houses or buildings to be seen for quite a distance, the town nestled further down on the mountain.
"I'm just saying. That's all." Tommy said. Suddenly, there was a series of loud dings coming from the backseat. They were followed by the alert sounds coming from my phone in my purse. "Must be back in the service area." Tommy said, taking a right onto the highway.
"Jesus. I have like thirteen voicemails." Jason said as he fished his phone out again. He brought the phone to his ear as I bent down to grab my purse. "The detective for our case called me." He said, sounding confused.
"He did?" I asked, trying to reach my purse. It was just out of reach of my fingertips.
"He said he's trying to reach you." Jason said. Looking over my shoulder, I looked at him confused. I saw Jason's eyes widen as he listened.
"What is it?" I asked, sitting up slightly. As I did, I could see passed Tommy's head and shoulders and through his window. It was just enough time to see the truck come speeding towards us. "Tommy, look out!" I managed to scream before it smashed into us.
