Somewhere Across the Mexican Border

The temperature in the RV increased significantly as we continued to drive deeper into Mexico. The forestation around us was beginning to fade, turning into dry lands of a desert. Nick had locked us in the bedroom again, leaving me to tend for Lily. She slept for most of the driving, sweat forming on her from her pajamas. I stripped them off of her when she stirred and changed her into a light onesie and a pair of pants. I also took the chance to look around more. In one of the bags, I found some of the stuff from my bedroom that horrid woman had stolen. In it. I saw my Power Coin that Tommy had given me on our way to the cabin for Christmas. It made my heart hurt to think of him. I hope he was alright and that they had been able to help him and Jason after we left. I wondered how badly he was hurt and just what was going on. Was someone trying to save us? Did they know where we were going and how to stop us before we got there? Could they even come into Mexico legally to save us? I had no clue. I did know that I was about to let that nasty woman keep the one thing I had besides Lily to tie me to Tommy. I tucked it into the lining of the bra for safe keeping, not wanting her to see that I had stolen it back.

I laid in the bed next to Lily and stroked the top of her head. She looked up at me, her eyes wide. I saw Tommy in them and my chest ached. "Hi, baby." I whispered. "I promise you that Mommy is going to find us a way out of here. I don't know how it's going to happen but it will. No one is going to hurt you or Mommy again." I felt tears well in my eyes, my vision becoming blurry from it. I wiped at them, sniffling. "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey." I sang. "You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away." Leaning in, I kissed the top of her head before snuggling her into me.

We continued to drive as the night went on. The RV pulled over to get gas at a small station a little after 3 am. I could just make out Andrew filling up the gas tank through the small slit in the blinds as I looked out the window. He hopped back on a few moments later and we drove away from the small store. A couple minutes later, I heard the door unlock and Nick strolled in. In his hands, he was holding two bottles of ice cold water and some kind of sandwich in plastic wrap. "Here." He said, tossing it on the bed next to me. Lily was in my arms, drinking down a bottle. "Eat up. You'll need your strength for what I have planned today."

"And what's that?" I asked, glaring over at him.

"If I tell you, it would ruin all of the surprises!" He said, smiling at me in a way that churned my stomach. "We'll be there in about an hour. Get cleaned up too. Can't be having you look like that now, can we?" He left, locking the door behind him. I set Lily on the bed and propped her up with the bottle. I drank one of the waters quickly, needing the water from the heat. I thought about what he had said. What the hell did he have planned up his sleeve? It couldn't be good, that much I knew for sure. What was he going to do to me and what the hell was going to happen once we got where we were going?

I thought it was best to do as he said and used a piece of the bedspread and the other water to scrub the grime off of my face and hands. I had dropped the clothes I was going to change into in the hustle of running out of the house. I had nothing else to wear either, only Lily's clothes being in the bag. My entire body was sore and achy from the car accident and my eyes were heavy from being awake for so long. I couldn't let myself fall asleep though. It would leave not only me vulnerable but would also give them a chance to get to Lily which I couldn't allow to happen. I burped Lily and sat on the bed with her, watching the door.

Our RV came to a stop again a short time later. I held on to Lily tightly as I heard movement out in the middle of the RV. The door opened and Andrew came in. He didn't even look at me as he grabbed the bags that weren't Lily's. He carried them out of the room and Gracie stepped in after him. She had the same look of disgust on her face as she scoffed. I saw she held a bag of her own and she tossed it down on the floor between us. Andrew appeared behind her, leaning against the door frame.

"Put that on." She said, nodding at it.

"What is it?" I asked, not moving.

"A dress."

"A dress? A dress for what?" I questioned.

"I don't fucking know. Give me the baby and put it on." She said, holding her arms out.

"No. I'm not giving you my baby." I said, shaking my head. She rolled her eyes and looked over her shoulder at her husband. He sighed and lifted his shirt, showing a handgun in his waistline.

"Trust me. I don't want to take care of the little shit machine either. It's just until you're dressed." She said. Even though I didn't want to, I knew that I didn't have a choice. Standing up, I stepped over the bag and handed her Lily. Lily turned her head to look at me and let out a cry as Gracie took her into her arms. "Jesus. Is that all this thing does is cry?" She asked, glaring down at Lily. "The faster you get this on, the fucking better." She kicked the bag towards me before walking out of the room. Andrew lingered in the doorway as I picked the bag up. Setting it on the bed, I opened it. Inside, I saw there was some material. Reaching in, I pulled it out and saw that it was a lacy summer dress. A white lacy summer dress.

"Dun dun dun dun dun." Andrew said, singing the beginning bars of the wedding march. I glared at him over my shoulder. "What's the matter, princess? I thought a girl's wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of her life."

"I'm not marrying him." I said, shaking my head. "I divorced him for a reason and I am not going back."

"I'm thinking you ain't got much choice here, darling." Andrew said, putting his hands on his waist. "I mean, you can tell him no all ya want. You and I both know he's not going to take that over very well. Nick has this way of letting the small stuff get to him and this isn't just some small stuff. You owe it to the guy to make things right. Ya did get him locked up and all over nothing."

"Over nothing? He tried to murder me and my unborn child." I said. "How can you work for someone who does that to someone? Could you ever do that to your wife?"

"Honey, why do you think she's here right now?" He asked. Sighing, he stepped closer to me. "Look, it's no skin off my nose if you do or not. Ya wouldn't be the first bitch I've killed in this desert and ya wouldn't be my last, I'm sure." He stepped in front of me. "I would just take a long minute to think about who would be raising your baby if I put a bullet between your eyes. Do you know why your husband was so quick to leave Miami?" I shook my head. "He was the one they were looking for in the murders of those kids the day before. I've seen him kill people before and I've seen him do some awfully scary stuff to people who haven't done a thing to him. Just what do you think he's going to do if he has to raise the bastard baby of his wife and her lover because she didn't want to listen? I assure you, it won't be full of love and happiness, that's for sure." He walked back over to the door. "Happy Wedding Day!" He smiled, walking out the door.

Quickly, I changed out of the dress from the wedding and into the white one. It wasn't a formal wedding dress. I could tell it was just something that Nick had found or had Gracie get some somewhere. It went to my knees and was lacy with a cotton material underneath it. It reminded me of a dress someone might wear for a formal event during the summer or a casual wedding. That idea made me want to throw up all over the place. There were no shoes in the bag though and I didn't have any from before. I fixed my hair the best I could, keeping it down. I knew I still looked like a mess but it was the most I could do like this. I tried to open the door when I was done but it was locked. A few short minutes later, it opened and this time, it was Pete. He looked the same as he did as the first time I saw him at Trini and Jason's house. He reminded me of a weasel with his long, thin nose.

"Nick's right. You do make a pretty bride. He's getting set up right now. I think it's going to be a beautiful day you'll never forget."

"Shut the fuck up." I growled, glaring at him. "Where's my baby?"

"Gracie has her. Come on." He stepped aside, letting me pass into the RV. I scurried passed him, seeing Gracie sitting on one of the benches with Lily at her feet in her car seat. Nick and Andrew were nowhere to be seen as I bent down and scooped her up in my arms. Gracie looked over at me and made a noise in her throat.

"Hopefully the second time sticks." She said, standing.

"Don't think she has much choice in that one." Pete said. "Divorce really isn't a thing here." Pete leaned up against the cabinet behind him. "You know, if you had just been easier to kill before, we wouldn't have to be doing this shit right now. I had been so close before but you are just one slippery bitch to get." I picked Lily up in my arms and held her against my chest.

"If you didn't team up with some like Nick, you wouldn't be here either." I said, glaring at him. "Do you get off on this or something? He literally tried to murder me and my unborn baby. How could you be so evil to work with someone like that?" I turned to Gracie. "And you. How could you watch someone treat someone like this? As a woman, how do you just stand by and let this happen? Does your husband have control over you? I get that. I really do. I was just like that before and I let Nick destroy me every chance he wanted. But I stood up to him finally and got my life back. You could do the same thing. This doesn't have to be your life, you know. You can be better." Gracie glared down at me.

"You and I aren't the same." She said. "I'm here because I know what a god opportunity looks like for my husband and I. Trust me when I say that I could care less about you and your brat. I think you deserve everything coming to you after what you did to Nick. Takes quite the whore to step out on her husband but an even bigger one to get knocked up by somebody else. I think you're getting a good deal with what he's offering you. It could be a lot worse. Trust me. I've seen bitch lose fingers, limbs, their heads for doing shit behind their man's backs. I would tuck that into the back of your head though. The people you'll be around down here are much worse than we are. They aren't afraid to make people come up missing. Especially ones that no one else in the world cares about. Like you." Behind her, the door of the RV opened and Andrew stepped inside.

"Don't mean to interrupt but we're ready." He said. Gracie walked towards him and off of the RV. Pete grabbed my upper arm and guided me towards the door.

"If it makes a difference, I think having a family in this business is useless." He said, guiding me off the bus. "I told Nick that killing you two would be so much easier but he's a man of the heart."

"Sure, he is." I muttered. Looking around, I saw that we were in some kind of park. The RV was next to a pavilion and across from it, I could see what appeared to be a cliff almost. There were tree tops below and the sun was hovering just behind them, it beginning to rise. There were no other cars around us and not even the sound of a highway. Glancing to the right, I saw that Gracie and Andrew were standing off to the side of the cliff. There were large rocks to stop people from getting too close to the edge. Nick was standing in front of one of them, his arms folded in front of him. The sound of crickets and cicadas chirped around us, the sound making the air buzz.

"I get the pleasure of walking you down the aisle." Pete said smugly, pulling me forward. I glared up at him as we walked. Nick smiled brightly as we approached, reminding me of how he looked on our actual wedding day. I'd give anything to go back to the day and to tell myself to run back to Angel Grove that moment.

"Hey, Kimmy." Nick said when Pete pulled me to a stop in front of him. "You look beautiful as always." I didn't say anything as he forced me to hold his one hand. "I'm glad we are able to be here together today to rejoin in marriage. For a moment there, I didn't think that we'd ever be together again. Yet, here we are." He reached out his other hand and stroked the top of Lily's head. "Our happy little family." I pulled him out of his reach. He smiled, looking over at Andrew who walked to stand between us slightly.

"Dear beloved, we are gathered here today to join these two in holy union. It's not often that two people find their ways back to one another after separating. I'm proud to see that Nicholas and Kimberly have been able to work past their differences to be able to see these sacred vows again. Sometimes, love comes with obstacles that we need to overcome and this has been a small one in your lives." Was this dude serious right now? If I wasn't about to be married to Nick against my will, I would have laughed.

"Well said!" Pete said, clapping. Andrew smiled proudly.

"Due to our current situation, the groom has elected to write his own vows." Andrew said, turning to Nick. He nodded, looking down at me.

"How about we let Gracie hold Lily for a moment?" He asked. I shook my head.

"No." I stated. "I want to hold her."

"It's just for a minute, Kimmy." He said, reaching out for her. I took a step back to stay out of his reach. I saw that familiar flash of anger over his features as he moved in closer to me. "Take the baby, Gracie." He said in a low tone. Gracie walked over to me and pried Lily from my hands. Once she was out of them, Nick grabbed me roughly by my shoulders. "I am trying to make this a nice day for you. A chance to reset this. Why must you fight me? Why are you making this harder on everyone, Kimmy? Why must you be such a bitch all of the time? Why do you continue to defy me?" I glared up at him, anger making my skin feel like it was on fire. He thought I was his property. He really thought I was his to control again and to abuse. I needed to save myself and I needed to save Lily.

"Don't you get it? I'm going to keep doing this until I breathe my last breath. I'm not yours. You don't control me anymore. And I will do everything in my power to make sure that my daughter doesn't have to live the same life with you as I had to. No matter where we go, no matter what you do, I will keep fighting and keep trying to run. I don't want to be with you and I don't want any kind of life with you." I pulled against his grasp.

"Well, sometimes, we don't get to make those choices, do we?" He asked through gritted teeth. "You're going to be with me. We are going to raise your daughter as my own. I will control both of your lives until the day you stop breathing. I tried to be the nice guy but I see you prefer the old me instead. I promise that I will make every single one of your days here on Earth just as miserable as the first." He looked over at Andrew. "There's my vow."

"Touching." Andrew said. He looked over at me. "Kimberly, I've taken it upon myself to write some vows for you on your behalf. Kimberly vows to honor, cherish, and obey Nichlas for the rest of her life, returning and repaying the debt that she owes to him for her previous infidelity. She vows to be loyal and true to him for the rest of her days."

"Maybe that will work this time around." Nick said, glaring down at me.

"Now," Andrew said, looking around with a smile on his face. "Does anyone here have any kind of reason as to why these two should not be joined in marriage today? If so, speak now or forever hold your peace." He jokingly looked around, Pete and Nick laughing as he made a show of it. "Anyone? Anyone at all?"

"Yeah." A voice called out behind us. Turning my head, I heard footsteps on the gravel near the RV. Nick grabbed my arm tightly as someone walked around the vehicle. I was surprised to see it was Tommy, the sun hitting him as he came around the front of the RV. "I object."
