Lily walked to the underground by herself. She knew Robbie and Ray were soon to follow. She let the sun warm her face and the wind chill her body. It was an odd paradox but she loved the warm and cold feeling all the same. She smiled and put on her headphones and fumbled with the radio dial and soon heard her song on 88.1.
To say she was surprised, and maybe even think she was hallucinating was an understatement. She didn't know what was going on.
Was she dreaming this? Or did someone really have a copy of one of her songs? She pondered that for a moment as the song ended. What she heard next was a surprise.
"That was a song by the beautiful and talented Lily Randal. She would kill us if she found out we played it without her permission. But we thought that everyone should hear it. But that's all for now. Tune in tomorrow. We will have another show. Well. That's the plan anyways..." Robbie grinned. He looked over across the table at Ray, and the new guy Travis. Travis and Ray grinned at Robbie as they heard someone clamoring down the stairs to the underground.
Lily burst in and stared at the three of them. "YOU GUYS. HOW did YOU get my song on the effing RADIO?" she grinned. Ray and Robbie pointed at Travis and a very old looking transmitter. "That dude and his transmitter," grinned Robbie.
"Lily, we want to start our own radio show. Would you be interested in doing it with us?" Robbie asked and the three guys looked over at her. Lily smiled and thought it was going to be the perfect distraction she was waiting for. "Every day after school?" she asked. Travis nodded. Ray grinned. "Yes. That's what we will strive for..." he smiled and nodded to Robbie. Robbie grinned at Lily. "What do you say Lil?" he grinned again. She couldn't help but grin at all of them and for the first time in months felt her heart warm.
"Sounds perfect.." she smiled and sat down.
The next few hours blurred by. They had all come up with the idea to remain anoymous. They all came up with names that they would use on the radio. And Travis and Lily finally got to talk for the first time since they made eye contact.
"Hey. My name is Lily. These two are my best friends. I heard you go by Travis?" she had asked him. He nodded and rubbed his jaw with his thumb. "And you go by Lilster and Lil. And you play the guitar and write your own songs. The guys have filled me in... It's going to be a pleasure to get to know you Lily.." he whispered. Lily grinned at him and her face heated up quickly. She looked at her shoes and their afternoon had progressed into another hour after hour. Soon it was 7pm. Lily had interrupted their discussion by the involuntary growl of her stomach. Travis looked at her softly. "Hungry?" he smiled. She nodded. The other guys looked at them. "You all want to go down to Manny's and get a pizza?" asked Ray. The guys all nodded in agreement but Lily looked at her shoes. "I have to call my parents and ask. I'll be right back.." she smiled warily. She got up and grabbed her cell from her backpack and headed out to the stairs. The door was left ajar. Ray and Robbie were talking to each other and Travis stared at the door.
Lily dialed her house phone and waited for the call to go through. "Hello Randal Residence.." her father said. "Hey Dad. It's me. Lily. I was wondering if I could go get some pizza with Robbie and Ray tonight before coming home?" she asked. Her father took in a shaky breath. "Peanut. It's already passed seven. You have had your mother worried sick. DON'T YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT TO LET US KNOW WHERE YOU ARE?" he growled. Lily jumped at his anger. "I left mom a voicemail," she whispered her voice shaking. "I'll just tell them I can't go. I'm sorry Dad. I'll be home soon.." she whispered and heard her father hang up on the other line. She swallowed hard and steeled herself and walked back into the room. "I can't go. Sorry guys. I'll just see you tomorrow at school..."
And with that Lily rushed over and grabbed her bag and hurried out the door. Travis followed her feet up the stairs with his eyes as the other two just shrugged and headed out as well. He was hoping that Lily was okay. She did leave in quite the rush.
(Author's Note: Three chapters. In ONE day. More to come tomorrow when I get home from work. I really hope I find some audience for this out there. If not. It's still good to get out the story in my head. As always. I don't own RFR.)
