Chapter 9
"I'd go and check on Yellowfang, if I were you." Greypaw reminded.
Firepaw snapped out of his thoughts and looked over to see Greypaw pointing at the medicine cat den. It had been a few minutes, and Firepaw realized that he had been too distracted with his thoughts and he needed to tend to Yellowfang.
"You're right, thanks Greypaw." Firepaw meowed.
"Good luck!" Ravenpaw meowed.
"You'll need the whole of Starclan for this, Firepaw. Yellowfang isn't a friendly fella." Dustpaw teased.
Sandpaw hit Dustpaw out of annoyance and gave a small glare, which Dustpaw cheerfully smiled to. Firepaw headed to the medicine cat den, hoping that Dustpaw wasn't right about Yellowfang being unfriendly. He peaked through the den and saw Yellowfang laying on a nest and was waiting for Firepaw. He entered the den and decided to clean Yellowfang. Firepaw grabbed some moss, dipped it into a nearby puddle, and dabbed it into Yellowfang's wounds.
"You're a kittypet, right?" she asked.
Firepaw dropped the moss in surprise.
"How did you know?" he asked.
"Bluestar never announced you as a kit nor your arrival at the gathering, plus I overheard Longtail call you a kittypet. So is it true?" Yellowfang asked curiously.
"Yeah, I lived with twolegs until a few days ago." Firepaw confirmed.
"Heh, I've never met a kittypet that had powers." Yellowfang grunted.
"Really?!" Firepaw meowed surprised.
"Yep. Kittypets don't usually have powers, it's the way of life, but if they do, it's very rare." Yellowfang finished.
"Well, then I must be one of the lucky ones." Firepaw chuckled.
"Yes, yes you are." Yellowfang meowed.
After a few minutes of grooming and cleaning up Yellowfang, Firepaw left the medicine cat den for Yellowfang to rest and looked around. He wondered about what to do next; he thought about going to the elders and hearing stories, but he wasn't in the mood. Then Firepaw thought about the nursery; he realized that he hadn't met the kits yet, so he headed over to the nursery, but a yowl stopped him.
"Hey Firepaw." A voice yowled.
Firepaw looked and saw Spottedleaf approach him. He had to admit, she was very beautiful, he didn't know why he didn't realize it sooner. Spottedleaf approached Firepaw and she was concerned.
"Firepaw, how's Yellowfang doing?" she asked.
"She's fine, but she's complaining about some pain in her leg." He meowed.
"I see, thank you Firepaw." Spottedleaf nodded.
She walked past Firepaw and entered her den. If Firepaw had to guess, Spottedleaf was concerned about infection and went to check on her injuries. Firepaw could hear Yellowfang's grunts and moans as Spottedleaf applied some herbs on the infection. Firepaw decided that he didn't want to visit the kits and headed towards the apprentices den. Once he went inside, he laid down on his nest and fell asleep. For the next three days, Firepaw would train with Bluestar on his powers, hunting, and fighting without his powers, then he would tend to Yellowfang and her healing injuries. Firepaw has gotten to know Yellowfang these past three days, her warrior days, her power, and why she became a medicine cat. Firepaw had to admit, Yellowfang's stories were interesting. He went into the medicine cat den where Yellowfang was laying on a nest and dropped a mouse and bird in front of her. Yellowfang opened her eyes and perked up.
"About time. Hey listen, there are some ticks embedded in my tail, can you get me some mouse bile and dab it on my tail? I do it myself, but I irritate the burns every time I move. Can you, please?" Yellowfang asked politely.
"Sure Yellowfang." Firepaw meowed.
"Good. Now over there is a wad of moss that has a small stick hanging out, grab it and dip it into that bile over there." She instructed.
Firepaw nodded and walked over to the pile of moss. He grabbed the small stick that stuck to the moss and carried it to a brown liquid puddle next to the storage den.
"Oh, one more thing. Make sure to not get any of the bile in your mouth or you'll have a horrible taste in your mouth for days and when you're done rubbing my tail, wash your paws in the nearest stream, not with your tongue, got it?" Yellowfang warned.
"Got it, Yellowfang." Firepaw meowed.
He did exactly as he was instructed, then came back and rubbed the mouse bile on the ticks. As he did, Yellowfang and Firepaw could see and hear a group of kits playing outside of the medicine cat den. The kits were playing warrior and pretended like they were in a fight with Shadowclan.
"Feel my teeth, Raggedstar!" one kit squeaked.
Yellowfang chuckled with amusement, Firepaw couldn't help but smile.
"You know, when Hopewing, Wishsong, and Brokentail were kits, Hopewing would flap her little wings as an attempt to fly and Brokentail and Wishsong would have a hard time catching her." Yellowfang recalled.
"Oh, you have other kits?" Firepaw asked surprised.
"Yes, I have two daughters, Hopewing and Wishsong. If you guessed right, then Hopewing has wings and can give hope. Wishsong can grant wishes while singing a song." Yellowfang explained.
"What's Brokentail's power? I assume that since you're his mother, you must know something." Firepaw asked curiosity.
"I don't know, I don't know what his power is." Yellowfang meowed.
Firepaw was shocked, he thought that since Yellowfang was Brokentail's mother, she might know something, but then again, maybe some queens can't figure out what their kits powers are after they're given a name. Firepaw continued rubbing the mouse bile on Yellowfang and both cats remained silent. Firepaw saw Yellowfang look sad and gloomy, he thought that it was the fact that she missed her family, but then he saw a flash of guilt and couldn't figure out why.
