A/N: Just a little drabble that occurred to me to write after watching the first 4 episodes of season 1 (i.e. Rising Parts 1 & 2, Hide and Seek, Thirty Eight Minutes and Suspicion). No spoilers for any episodes.
Disclaimer: I don't own SGA…but that's probably for the best.
Nightlights
He hadn't realized just how quickly life could change. One moment you were staring in the mirror, a young kid; the next moment saw you in the battlefield, facing your worst nightmare. Nightmares you thought only plagued your sleep, now were real. They no longer vanished with the click of a nightlight. But that was the beauty of Atlantis - no matter how late it was, no matter how dark, or what the weather, there was always a light. A faint glow coming from the door, or perhaps a light just off to one side of the room; a perpetual nightlight always shone. A beacon of hope in the world of nightmares. A light to guide you home, to bed, to sleep. That was, if you could still sleep.
Creatures he had never dreamed of, he now found himself fighting. Weapons he could never have hoped to hold, he fired without discretion. Spacecraft he could never have expected to be, he flew as though he had trained for his entire life. People he had never met, he befriended with a lopsided smile. This was why he had come. The experience, the adventure, the friends - no matter how bad it got, there was always some good. It just depended on how you looked at it.
John Sheppard grinned before disappearing through the wormhole - he would take the nightmares and the pain, if only because going through the Stargate was worth it, each and every time.
A/N: If you feel like it, drop a review by...since it's short, I'll forgive if you don't. Oh, and thanks for reading!
