***Before we get into this chapter, I want to warn about sexual themes. I'm used to AO3 and being able to heavily tag stories, so I'm feeling a little anxious about not getting that option here. So be warned, there is sex in this story. I'll try to edit as much of it to be more implied as possible, but some of it can't be changed***
The first thing Jim noticed when he realized he was awake was that someone was pressed up against his back with their arm around him and their face tucked into the crook of his neck and shoulder.
Who the hell…
He was lying the ground with his jacket as a pillow in a forest and he was confused at first and then-
Oh yeah…
The events of the day before flooded back faster than he was ready to handle and he forgot how to function as he stared blindly at the stick lying on the ground in front of his face. Stinging agony was back with a vengeance and Jim had to screw his eyes shut and breathe slowly to keep from crying again. William shifted and his arm tightened around Jim's waist. His lips brushed against Jim's skin as he whispered, "You ok?"
"Yeah…I'm…I'm fine…" Jim whispered back after a moment.
I need a distraction.
It took a bit of wiggling, but Jim was able to roll over and face William and he stared up into the other man's eyes. His friend gazed back with confusion and slight apprehension before he leaned in and very hesitantly planted his lips on Jim's.
He honestly hadn't expected this when he first turned around. Jim had thought maybe they would talk or Willian would hug him but this…it did technically count as a distraction…he sure as hell was distracted.
I guess this'll work?
Jim brought his hand up and cupped William's face to draw him harder into the kiss even though he knew it wasn't what he wanted. Part of him felt bad for using William like this; he wasn't especially attracted to him. Sure, he was cute, and easy to tease, and had the build that really appealed to Jim's preferences, but…they were friends and he'd never felt like they needed to move past that stage. And while Jim was ready to welcome just about anything at this point to keep his mind and his heart shielded from the pain, that little part of him was getting louder and more insistent and his gut felt heavy with regret and guilt.
This is wrong. You know Will likes you. You're just leading him on by doing this.
He started to pull back, but William chased his lips and rolled them so he was on top of Jim and he pressed down with his weight. An unprompted moan snuck out of Jim's mouth as William's hands gripped behind his thighs and pulled his legs up and he rocked his hips forward needily. It had been so long since Jim had felt this sort of pleasure and even as he argued with himself that he didn't want it, his body said otherwise and began to react. The kiss became almost demanding and William moved his mouth hungrily over Jim's throat.
I have to stop this...
"Will-"
"Want you…" William growled and his motions became more desperate and rougher. He ground his hips against Jim's ass.
Jim's stomach was heavy with guilt; he just couldn't get into this. He pushed at William's shoulders, "Will, I'm sorry…I shouldn't have have-"
He was cut off as his friend's lips caught his again forcefully. Jim grunted as he tried to twist his head to one side, but William was pushing down so hard he couldn't move. It hurt. A hint of fear sent a tremor down his spine.
Will he stop if I tell him to?
Jim grabbed a handful of William's hair and managed to drag him off enough to gasp, "Stop!"
William stiffened and he looked at Jim with wide eyes before he jumped up, "Oh my God- Jim I'm sorry- I thought- when you kissed back- shit, I'm so sorry!"
"It's fine," Jim tried his hardest not to sound relieved that William hadn't just kept going. "I…I shouldn't have kissed back, I'm sorry…I'm just…not in the right mind for that right now…"
Guilt went across the blond's face and he offered a hand to help Jim to his feet and they collected their coats, but were hesitant to put them on in the heat and humidity. He looked like he was going to say more, but Jim waved a hand and stopped him, "Look, it's fine. Really. Don't worry about it, some other time, ok?"
Why the hell did I say that?
He regretted the words the moment they passed through his lips. William looked relieved, yes, but Jim should have just let him down and not given him that sliver of hope that he'd want it later. Jim knew he wasn't in the right mind for sex, but even if he was he knew he wouldn't be up for it with William.
"We need to get to the first coordinate point," He opened the navigation tool and started walking.
It didn't take long before William's constant energy and wanting to talk Jim through his 'stifled emotions' was so grating that Jim was sure if he said one more goddamn word-
"We're here!"
Jim unclenched his fists and let out a deep breath, muttering to himself, "Fucking finally…"
William stopped dead in his tracks and Jim slammed into his back with a grunt, "What're you- oh, what the fuck…"
They stood at the edge of a clearing in the trees that looked like it had literally been scorched in a perfect circle around a lone stone pillar at the center. Jim glanced at William before tentatively stepping over the boundary line between vegetation and blackened earth. When nothing immediately happened, he took another step.
He felt vulnerable out in the open like this when they'd been so shielded by trees ever since they landed and he rushed to the pillar as if it would protect him in the case of an ambush.
"What- what is it?" William called from the treeline.
Jim looked it over quickly as he circled it. Then he looked it over again. And a third time. It didn't make sense.
"There's nothing here…it's just…it's just a stone pillar," Jim shook his head and looked back at William, who had started to follow him out into the clearing.
"What?"
"There's no writing, no slots or cracks or anything, just…this," he motioned with his hands at the smooth stone before throwing them up in exasperation. "Well this is just great…"
"Maybe we got the coordinate wrong…" William looked down at his navigation tool desperately. Jim shook his head, "How could we? I have my half of the coordinates literally branded into my brain and you have yours on that little slip of paper hiding under the lid of your navigation device."
William looked shocked and he snapped the lid of the little tool shut, "How did you-?"
"Dude. I know you. You used to do that all the time back in the Academy with your exam notes," Jim raised an eyebrow and smirked and William looked sheepish.
"I…I didn't know you knew I did that…"
"I saw you cheating more than once."
The man's face flushed bright red and he looked up with wide eyes. Jim shrugged, "You're welcome for not turning you in to the school board, by the way."
"My God…" relief and defeat both crossed over William's face and he offered a tired smile, "Well…now what? If this is what the coordinate leads to, there's gotta be something that's important about it, right?"
Jim stared at the stone. He couldn't think straight. His emotions were all over the place, William hadn't given him even a second to be alone to his own thoughts, and he just…he needed a minute to breathe and be alone.
He needed to mourn.
"Why don't we split up…you go North, I'll go South, and we meet back here in an hour. If there's anything we missed we should be able to find it in that time," He offered after a moment. William clearly didn't like the idea by the expression he made, and Jim continued before he could argue, "If we don't find anything, then we'll come up with a new plan. Just like you said, this point has to be important, else why would the Navy send us here?"
William sighed, but he didn't offer a different option and Jim turned to face South, "Alright. Meet you in an hour."
For once, he waited until he got a response before heading out. He needed to be sure Will wouldn't try to follow him. Jim had zero intention of looking for anything and he was pretty sure Will had figured that out, but his friend only sighed and shrugged and muttered, "Alright fine, see you in an hour."
It very well could have already been an hour before Jim pulled out of his thoughts. Not that he was particularly done calming back down from crying yet, it was just hard to focus on much of anything when he was tumbling wildly down a steep embankment. He rolled over a cliff with a shout of horror and then he was plummeting down-
The lake below the cliff wasn't as far a fall as he thought and he plunged into it.
OW!
He hit the lakebed, the landing only barely softened by the water he'd hit first. Jim found his feet and stood up with a desperate gasp. It wasn't as deep a lake as he'd imagined from the size, and when he stood at his full height the water only came up to mid-ribs.
"FUCK!" He screamed. It was practically instinct to let out his anger and embarrassment and annoyance at himself for not looking where he was stepping in that one short word. His hand went to his pocket for the navigation device and he let out a sigh when it was still where it was supposed to be. Because that would be fun to try to find either at the bottom of the lake or somewhere on the hillside.
"Fucking dammit I'm such a fucking idiot and now I'm who the fuck knows where in a LAKE and-"
A crawling feeling went up the back of his neck and Jim stiffened. His eyes rose and he turned his head to the side a little bit.
Practically right in front of him was a ship.
Well, not RIGHT in front of him. They were on the opposite bank of the lake, which was a good long swim away from him. But he could clearly see the crew gazing at him in shock just as he was staring at them in close to the same manner.
Jim noticed the flag was a jolly roger and groaned, "Fuck…"
But the hull wasn't painted green so at least it wasn't Raith. Not that this was much better. Yipee…
The big red alien at the railing of the ship jumped over and into the water and Jim tensed. That can't be good-
And then it started swimming toward him. And it was FAST.
"FUCK!" Jim yelped and whipped around. He half-ran, half-swam, but mostly struggled until he was back at the cliff face and he climbed it as quickly as he could. He looked back over his shoulder to see the progress of the alien and his heart leapt into his throat.
"Oh, holy shit, you're really fast!"
They were right behind him and he could finally get a good look. But once Jim had determined that they were big and fast and a Zora - he'd seen a few on different missions - he really didn't take the time to define any other physical characteristics. He just pulled himself over the lip of the cliff and ran as if his life depended on it.
It was uncomfortable and humid and Jim's clothing stuck to him like glue, but the heat was at least starting to dry his shirt out a little bit.
He was startled by the little random details he was noticing as he ran considering how terrified he was. The Zora was hot on his heels. Another cursory glance over his shoulder had helped him determine it was a man too, and he looked mean. He was huge and had longer legs than him and Jim kept tripping over his own feet in his scramble to get away.
Jim didn't see that he was running straight into a dead-end until he nearly slammed into the sheer stone wall. He whipped around and started to run back the way he'd come, but the Zora's imposing form came around the bend and blocked the exit. Jim spun around again and tried to climb the wall. His hands and feet scrambled for purchase and he was actually making upward progress before a massive hand caught the back of his shirt and yanked him down.
"NO!"
Panic rose in Jim's chest. It crushed around his heart and lungs until it threatened to squeeze the life right out of him completely. He thrashed and kicked and swung his fists. Not that he could possibly hurt the Zora with a kick or punch, but he hoped his struggling would at least lessen the grip on him enough that he could wriggle free. Maybe he could dart between the Zora's legs and make a break for it-
His fist collided with the man's cheek and the Zora went still as a statue for a fraction of a second before a snarl rose in his throat and he threw Jim on the ground.
But before he could even start to push himself to his feet, the alien was on top of him and pressing down and he was trapped on his stomach. His breath was too hot on the back of Jim's neck, his hands too big and too strong to pull out of, and his rumbling growl sent a shiver up Jim's spine.
I'm going to die-
Why hadn't he done it yet? Why hadn't he delivered the killing blow? The Zora was big enough and strong enough he could have snapped Jim's neck like a toothpick- so why didn't he? Why did he have to drag it out so that all Jim could feel was suffocating terror?
"...Mine…" The growl had changed. It was less aggressive. Needier. Huskier.
Lips pressed to Jim's skin and a jolt went through his heart.
What?
The Zora's hands slipped under Jim's shirt and roved over his body as the mouth traveled from the back of Jim's neck and to his left shoulder, nuzzling the collar of his shirt out of the way. The growl was a purr now and it felt as though it vibrated straight into Jim's core.
He felt the scrape of teeth as the Zora's lips parted and he took the fleshy part of Jim's shoulder in his mouth. The purr intensified and that was the only warning he made before he bit hard enough to draw blood and leave a lasting mark.
There was no pain.
It was as if something in Jim's very soul clicked into place, like part of him had been hollow and now it was filled and he was confused at how relieved he felt. He heard a noise come out of his mouth that he'd never made before. It was the breathiest, most desperate sounding moan he'd ever heard. And then he noticed how his body was reacting and he was even more confused.
There was a yearning in his lower stomach, the familiar rush of heat and tingling that indicated he wanted…more… needed more…His hips bucked upward to grind into the body on top of him and his skin was too sensitive and hot and-
What the fuck?! What's wrong with me?!
His attention was drawn back to the purring and how soothing it was…only when the Zora released the bite was there any pain, but it was more of a dull ache than what Jim had expected. He should be in agony right now. Why didn't it hurt more?
"Mine…" The Zora mumbled again, his voice gentle and…loving? He peppered kisses up Jim's neck and into his hairline. The weight moved off Jim's back as the Zora shifted forward and Jim could have moved if he tried but…something was holding him back. He realized that he didn't want to move…
The Zora palmed the front of his pants and Jim panted and squirmed. The noises coming out of his mouth were so needy and he felt like he might come even with this tiny amount of stimulation like a damn teenager.
His belt was unbuckled, pants pulled down around his knees and then he felt it. Hot and thick and ready . The Zora ground against his ass, pressed against his entrance, and Jim whined with impatience. His body needed it, needed to feel them locked together, needed that pleasure-
"Sidon! Where are you?!"
They both froze. The feeling of desperate desire shattered and Jim whipped his head around. He knew his face held the same shocked look as the Zora braced above him. They scrambled away from each other. Jim yanked his pants back up.
"SIDON?!"
The Zora reacted to the call, his head whipping around to look at the narrow entrance to the shallow ravine they were in and then he looked back at Jim with terror in his eyes, "You need to go!"
I must have heard him wrong- "What?"
"GO!" The Zora - Sidon? - rushed toward him and easily scooped him into his arms. Jim felt the weightlessness of flying through the air and then the aching as he hit the ground again. He stared - stunned - at the sky for a moment before looking back down into the ravine.
The Zora drew a knife and sliced a deep gash in his chest and he roared in agony. Jim's jaw dropped. WHAT THE FUCK?!
"G-go!" Sidon met his gaze and whispered.
This time Jim didn't hesitate. He ran. He didn't even look where he was going, just started running in the opposite direction with his heart in his throat and his lungs burning. His shoulder SCREAMED now as he ran.
"JIM?!"
He veered at William's panicked call and made a beeline toward the shout. William turned in time to see Jim sprinting at him, blood soaking through his shirt, and then Jim grabbed his wrist and dragged him along.
"Holy shit, what- what happened?!"
Jim didn't answer. He just kept running. He had to get away just as desperately as he had needed to feel- NO! His chest ached from how fast his heart was beating and how his breath came in ragged gasps.
"Jim! Stop!"
He was yanked back on roughly and he nearly fell. His expression must have been one of pure terror or confusion or-
William grabbed his arms and shook him a little, "What the hell happened?! Are you ok? Why are you bleeding?"
The words wouldn't come out. He didn't even know what the fuck to say anyway.
Jim felt his shirt collar getting pulled to the side and the cloth peeled off the wound. Pain shot through him from the bite mark and Jim howled in agony. He barely caught the wide-eyed, pale look on William's face before he screwed his eyes shut.
"Oh my God…what…what happened?"
"I got bit…"
William's voice held a note of annoyance, "No shit. Come on, let's keep going…"
And then William was pulling him along and they retreated further into the forest.
The first thing Jim noticed when he realized he was awake was that someone was pressed up against his back with their arm around him and their face tucked into the crook of his neck and shoulder.
