Hiro walked out of the changing room and headed to the dancehall. There was a dim light from a light bulb leading the way to it. Hiro reached the door and pushed it open. He couldn't see a thing.

'Um. Hey guys? Fred? Olivia?'

The lights suddenly turned on and Hiro jumped as a raucous shout of 'SURPRISE!' erupted from the other end of the room. Fred, Olivia, Honey Lemon, Wasabi and GoGo emerged from behind a long table covered by a cloth. They blew party horns and popped party poppers. Baymax, Minimax and Heathcliff came out after them. Hiro wasn't expecting this at all and could only smile shyly. He took a moment to take everything in. There were balloons and banners everywhere, a DJ booth for Baymax and Minimax, a mini bar full of drinks and snacks and disco lights. And to top it all off, there was a big disco ball on the ceiling.

'Happy birthday, Hiro!' they all said.

'Aww, thanks guys! Thanks for coming. Wow, this is just amazing. And Fred, Olivia. You guys really did a great job with the dancehall!'

'No problem, dude. Glad you like it.'

'It's exactly what I wanted. It's perfect!'

'Well, you're very welcome,' said Olivia. Hiro smiled at them.

'Right, well. There's a few more guests yet to come. But we may as well get this party started!' exclaimed Hiro. Everyone cheered. Baymax and Minimax got to work on the DJ decks.

'I am programmed to fight injustice and crime! But tonight! My mission is to get you all boogieing!' said Minimax.

He stuck his finger in the air and started dancing. Everyone laughed. Heathcliff started pouring drinks and filling bowls with nibbles. Then there was a knock at the door. Globby and Felony Carl arrived with presents for Hiro and wished him happy birthday. As Hiro put them down, another guest arrived. It was Megan, holding another present. Everyone looked over at her and then back at Hiro, as if to say "What's she doing here?" Hiro sensed the tension in the room and thought he should say something.

'It's okay guys. I invited her. She's still my friend despite everything that happened. Plus she wants to apologise… if Karmi comes.'

'Hmm, well she better not cause any more trouble. You know you're the reason they split up. Hiro was a wreck for weeks. All because of you,' said Gogo, going full over-protective big sister mode.

'Hey! That's enough, Gogo. It's cool. She's cool.'

'She's right though, Hiro. I can only keep apologising for what happened. I promise I had no idea you two were together. It was just a stupid rash moment of madness in the heat of everything.' Gogo didn't look too convinced.

'Yeah, I know. You don't have to explain yourself again. Come join the party.'

'Hmm, well I'm gonna be keeping an eye on her…' said GoGo. She grabbed a bowl of crisps and aggressively crunched on them.

'Thanks, Hiro. Thanks for inviting me and forgiving me for everything.'

'Hey. It's water under the bridge now.' Megan smiled at him, grateful to be forgiven.

'I just hope I haven't ruined your chances with Karmi. I can see how much you like her. She's a really lucky girl…'

'Oh, I don't like her. I love her,' corrected Hiro.

Megan looked surprised to hear that and just stayed silent and handed Hiro his present. It was no secret to herself that since the kiss, she had grown to have a thing for Hiro. She'd even thought about asking him out when the drama of everything died down, but she never did because he never stopped thinking about Karmi. And that statement just sealed her disheartenment. There was only one girl he wanted and it wasn't her. She smiled anyway and was happy to be at the party. She wasn't going to get in the way of true love and didn't want to give Hiro anymore pain.

After that awkward little moment was over and Megan was welcomed by everyone but Gogo, the party went into full swing. Fred, Olivia and Globby were busting the moves, while everyone else was a little more shy and only dancing a little. Minimax was having the time of his life and spinning and jumping to Baymax's tunes. Heathcliff was happy to serve as always and made sure everyone was catered for. Everyone was having a great time. Hiro was happy to see his party going so well. But he found himself nervously checking the clock and his phone every now and then. Thankfully, Honey Lemon came over and asked him to come and dance. Hiro was happy for the distraction and ran over in a flash.

They partied and laughed and even played a few party games. Hiro hadn't looked at the clock once for a good while. But time was ticking as the little hand reached 7 and the big hand reached 12. Hiro was really enjoying himself now and the music was flowing out in full force. As far as 16th birthday parties went, this wasn't a bad one at all so far. Hiro took a last sip of his drink, then quickly made his way over to the bar for a top up. As Heathclliff filled his cup up, he felt a sticky hand on his shoulder.

'Hey, Hiro. You might wanna turn around…' said Globby.

'Hmm, why? What's up, Globby?'

Globby sighed and turned Hiro around himself. Hiro saw a flash of red and then a face he could not take his eyes off.

'She's heeere!' he said in a sing-songy voice. He let go of Hiro and smiled satisfyingly.

At the entrance stood the keeper of his heart, in an entrancing red dress. Baymax switched the music up and played "Magic" by Robin Thicke. Karmi slowly walked in, looking a little lost, until her eyes met Hiro's across the room and then she felt found instantly. Hiro couldn't stop himself gaping at her in all of her beauty, as he took cautious baby steps towards her. The song's lyrics began to kick in.

I can make the pain disappear...

And I can erase the past... Oh...

I can make the future shine so bright...

And I can make right now alright... Yeah…

Everyone suddenly stopped dancing and just observed the moment quietly, looking back and forth between Hiro and Karmi. Hiro stopped in the centre of the room. Karmi came closer and closer and flicked her hair, eyes not wavering from Hiro's the whole way. She stopped in front of him and looked up at him, realising he'd got even taller since the last time they saw each other. The music was the only noise in the room for a long time until Karmi spoke.

'Hi…' said Karmi

'Hi.' They both laughed nervously and kept looking away from each other's eyes.

'You came…' said Hiro.

'Yeah, here I am! Happy birthday, Hiro! You look… really nice.' Karmi smelt the aftershave. 'Hmm, you smell good too.'

'Haha, thanks. You look absolutely stunning, Karmi. Love the dress.'

'Oh, this old thing? I've never worn it before. But I thought I'd give it a go tonight.'

'Well, it suits you.'

'Thank you.'

'I didn't think you were coming.'

'Oh, well my train was a little delayed and got a little lost on the way here. But I found it in the end. Pretty cool place.' Karmi took a moment to check the dancehall out.

'Well, I'm glad you're here now. I was starting to think that maybe that was it for us… that you didn't want to see me again… I mean, I know you said you wanted to take things slow but-'

'Oh! Just shut up, doofus!'

Karmi tiptoed up to his height, grabbed his face and kissed him tenderly. Everyone clapped and cheered. Even Heathcliff punched the air and did a little jig. The kiss lasted as long as they could hold the breath. They pulled apart their lips and then giggled cutely.

'I wouldn't have come all the way here if I didn't want you back. But it's cute that you were so worked up about it...'

'Oh! You don't know the half of it, Karmi!' joked Fred. 'He wouldn't stop banging on about how he wanted everything to be perfect. He really is crazy about you.'

Hiro looked down and scraped his shoe on the floor in embarrassment, but chuckled because Fred really did know just how much he adored her. Karmi sniggered.

'Well, thanks for your input, Fred. And hi, everyone. It's lovely to see you all again. Don't think I've met you two yet though,' she said looking over at Globby and Felony Carl.

They quickly waved at her and introduced themselves. Then Karmi noticed Megan in the corner of the room.

'Oh, and you…'

'Yeah. Don't be mad at her, Karmi. I invited her. She wants to apologise,' said Hiro. Karmi remained calm.

'Okay, let's hear it then.' Megan quickly made her way over to her.

'Hey, Karmi. Nice to properly meet you. I am so sorry for everything that happened before. I genuinely had no idea you two were a thing and I can assure you Hiro never kissed me back. He pushed me away as soon as it happened. I'm just sorry that you two had to go through such a hard time because of it all. I never meant to do that.'

'I know. But yeah, you did cause a lot of emotional damage to our relationship… but the damage is done and I may have overreacted a little anyway… And actually, it's only made us stronger. So, you know what? I forgive you, Megan. Thanks for apologising. No hard feelings.'

Karmi extended her hand and Megan shook it, grateful to have been forgiven by Karmi too. It was also the moment where she had to concede defeat and move on. There was no getting in between these two, she thought.

'Alright, well I'm glad we've cleared that up now. It really was just a big misunderstanding and I hope we can all be friends now,' said Hiro.

Hiro looked over at Gogo and gave her a look. Gogo sighed and reluctantly nodded in agreement. It was Hiro's birthday after all and all she and everyone else wanted was for him to be happy.

'Okay! Well, the night's still young! So, let's get this party started again!' Hiro looked over at the DJ booth and cupped his hands over his mouth. 'Hey, Baymax! Track 14, song 4, please!' he shouted.

Baymax blinked and gave him a thumbs up. Minimax assisted and helped him select the song. "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk the Moon blared out into the dancehall. Everyone got back to dancing. Hiro extended his hand out to Karmi and grinned. She laughed and shook her head.

'You can't be serious! I've never seen you dance ever!'

'Oh! I'm dead serious, babe,' said Hiro in his Captain Cutie voice.

Karmi laughed even harder. Hiro started dancing and singing and waltzed his way over to Karmi. He'd been practising for weeks and wasn't actually too bad.

'Come on. Take my hand, baby,' said Hiro, keeping up his Captain Cutie voice.

Karmi didn't laugh this time and just took his hand. The voice was starting to make her feel flustered as it always did and now she was putty in his hands. They danced like two lovers in a ballroom and swayed side to side, not taking their eyes off each other in between each move. They literally danced the night away and they were all having so much fun that they didn't realise the time was creeping closer to 10pm. People started to leave one by one and hug the birthday boy goodbye. As 10 o'clock struck, it was just Karmi and Hiro on the dancefloor now, slow dancing under the disco ball. Baymax was the only other person in the room, still manning the decks. One last song to end the night was playing quietly.

And we can build this dream together

Standing strong forever

Nothing's gonna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers

We'll still have each other

Nothing's gonna stop us

Nothing's gonna stop us now

'Hey, Hiro. You never said. What is this place?'

'Ah! We call it Basemax. It's basically our headquarters. I mean we hardly use it nowadays, but it makes a great venue for parties and stuff.'

'Yeah, it's brilliant! I see why you kept it a surprise. You'll have to give me a tour sometime.'

'Of course! You may not be part of the team, but you can always use this as a safe place or just to chill. It's got state of the art security and everything.' Karmi nodded in understanding.

'Good to know. You really are a remarkable guy, you know. You never stop impressing me.' Karmi rested her head on Hiro's shoulder. Hiro stroked her hair.

'Well, if I'm remarkable, then you're extraordinary.'

'Oh, I know that already,' joked Karmi. Hiro laughed.

'Yeah, I thought as much.' They both laughed.

'But I really mean it. I've never met anyone like you, Karmi. I- I love you.' Karmi immediately pushed Hiro back.

'You… you what?'

'I love you, Karmi Khan.' Karmi stared at him in amazement and scoffed.

'Oh, no! I've messed everything up haven't it! I shouldn't have said that! It's way too soon, isn't it!'

Hiro smacked his forehead and called himself an idiot. Karmi slowly grabbed his hand to stop him smacking it again and rubbed it softly.

'No, you idiot. You haven't messed anything up at all. On the contrary, things are just getting started. Because. Because… I love you too.'

Hiro could only laugh in relief. He picked her up and spun her around.

'Hey! Just cause you're taller than me now, doesn't mean you can do that without warning me. Put me down, doofus,' joked Karmi. Hiro put her down.

'Right, sorry. Couldn't help myself there. But say it again. Just so I know this is really happening,' Karmi rolled her eyes.

'I love you, Hiro Hamada.'

Hiro pulled Karmi closer to him and kissed her. Then they hugged and didn't let go for a solid two minutes.

'Thanks for coming babe. This has been the best birthday.'

'Wouldn't have missed it for the world.' Hiro smiled and put an arm round Karmi.

'Ready to go home?'

'Yeah, let's go.'

They turned off the lights and Hiro reactivated the security system. Then they flew home on Baymax. Karmi missed the feeling of flying and even had the confidence to spread her arms out this time. On the way back, they noticed a crescent moon out and marvelled at it, just before Baymax was ready to land. He landed right outside the workshop. Hiro and Karmi removed their helmets and left them there. Then they snuck in quietly through the front door. Hiro turned the key slowly, not wanting to wake Cass. He put his fingers to his lips as he guided Karmi inside. A light switched on as soon as they got in. Cass was actually still awake and walked down the stairs.

'Hiro! How was it?' Cass tilted her head and noticed Karmi behind Hiro. 'Oh! Karmi! You came! What a pleasant surprise!'

'I need a recharge. Please excuse me,' interrupted Baymax as he slumped upstairs.

'Okay, see you tomorrow buddy. Thanks for the music.' Karmi turned to Cass.

'Um, yeah. Hi, Cass. Nice to see you again. It's been a long time, hasn't it?'

Karmi smiled awkwardly, not sure what kind of reception she was going to get.

'Yeah, Hiro told me everything… My Hiro would never hurt you, you know. I hope you know that. He absolutely adores you.'

'I know. Pretty much everyone at the party told me exactly the same thing. Part of me always knew that. But I kinda just used the whole situation as an excuse to give in to my insecurities. Everything was just happening so fast and I couldn't believe that someone like Hiro would ever love me. But he does.' Karmi looked over at Hiro lovingly.

'Love?! Are you in love?' asked Cass, wide-eyed. Hiro grabbed Karmi's hand and scratched the back of his neck.

'I mean, we kinda both dropped the L bomb at the party...'

'Oh! Wow. Now that… That is big! I suppose that means you're giving it another go then?'

'Oh, yeah. And this time it's dead serious. To be honest, everything that's happened has just brought us closer together. It was like a test and we survived it. I think that says a lot about our relationship,' said Hiro.

'It says everything! Oh, come here you two. You've got me emotional now.'

Cass spread her arms wide and embraced them in a big hug.

'This really could be the start of something special, you know. Might even have to start planning a wedding…' pondered Cass.

'Aunt Cass! It's way, way too early to be thinking about that!'

'Oh, yes. Sorry. Just thinking out loud! Oh! I just remembered! I got one last thing for you Hiro, while it's still your birthday. Karmi? Would you mind coming upstairs and getting it with me?'

'Um, okay sure!'

They quickly rushed upstairs. Hiro heard loud rustling as he waited patiently downstairs. And then Karmi shouted from upstairs for Hiro to come up to the kitchen. As he approached it, he saw a dim light and then as he got closer he realised it was candles on a big delicious chocolate cake. Cass and Karmi immediately started to sing happy birthday and filmed him on their phones.

'Aw, Aunt Cass! You really shouldn't have,' said Hiro coyly, not knowing where to look.

'Well, it is your sixteenth! I had to make an extra special effort this year! Now, come on! Make a wish and blow them out!'

Hiro took a deep breath and blew them all out in two attempts. Cass and Karmi clapped and then turned the lights back on. Karmi came over to him.

'So. What did you wish for, babe?'

'Well, what do you think? I'd say my wish already came true, wouldn't you?' Karmi beamed up at him and they kissed.

'Awww! How sweet!'

Cass caught the moment on camera. They all got a slice of cake and stayed up a while, with Karmi catching up with Cass mainly. Then when midnight hit, Cass decided to call it night and said goodnight.

'Well, looks like it's just us two then,' said Hiro with a smug grin.

'I guess so.'

Hiro grabbed Karmi's hand and led her to his room. They sat on the bed. Hiro took his tie off and placed his hand on Karmi's.

'I missed you so much, Karmi. Everyday without you was just unbearable. But here we are. Back together, as we should be.'

'I missed you too. It took me a while to realise just how much I needed you. But I've never been more sure about anything in my life. And I think I can finally be vulnerable and give you all of me.'

'I understand. It's crazy how we fell for each other so fast and it's not exactly been the most straightforward relationship. But I promise you, there's nothing to be insecure about. I choose you and only you, babe.'

'I know. I choose you too, Hiro.'

Hiro smiled at her and then ran his hand up Karmi's arm. Karmi watched as his hand reached her shoulder. Then she put her hand on Hiro's thigh and stared at him. They both leaned towards each other and intertwined their legs. There was an intake of breath and eyeballing from both of them and then they lunged in for a kiss instantaneously. The kissing was fast and intense and they were running their hands through each other's hair. It wasn't long until Karmi was on her back on the bed. Hiro made sure he was on top again, after liking it so much the last time they made out. They just picked up where they left off. This time was a little different, however. Karmi grabbed Hiro's waist and pulled him closer to her. Then her hands rubbed up and down his back. Hiro took this as a sign that Karmi wanted to be a little more intimate than before. He continued to kiss her and then rolled onto his side and brought Karmi back to him. He placed his hands on her back and then gradually got lower and lower.

'Is this okay, babe?' he whispered.

Karmi just nodded and kept kissing him. So with that, Hiro got his hands lower down. Karmi moved hers around Hiro's body too. Hands were going into uncharted territories for both of them and they were both getting carried away in the moment. It felt like it was long overdue, as they explored another side to their hunger for one another. Things escalated when Hiro's hands got even lower and squished Karmi's plump butt cheeks. They stopped kissing and opened their eyes. Karmi laughed.

'Naughty!' She smacked Hiro's hand away playfully. Hiro laughed nervously

'Sorry, I guess I got a little too excited there.' Karmi grinned.

'It's okay. I kinda liked it actually. But we should probably stop there. I think that's a good enough birthday present for you.' She winked at him. Hiro laughed

'Yeah, it was. But yeah, I think we should stop too. I really enjoyed getting to know your body more though. You do have a really nice ass.' Hiro smirked at her and had another look at it.

'Haha, well thank you. If you're good, you might get to touch it again tomorrow...'

'Damn, I'll have to be on my best behaviour then.' Karmi yawned suddenly.

'Tired, babe?'

'Yeah, that train journey really does take it out of you. Plus what we just did was pretty intense.'

'Haha, yeah. I'm kinda tired too now actually. It's been a long day. But the absolute best day I could wish for. Mainly because of you.'

'Of course. I mean, you were pining for me for all that time like Fred and Cass said.'

'Oh, shut up!'

They started play-fighting a little and whacked each other with a pillow. Then when they got tired out and had to settle for a draw, they had one last kiss and said goodnight. Hiro turned out the light and cuddled up close to Karmi.
