Ginny liked to think that everything would get better when Harry woke up. Yet it only served to make things more complicated. The weeks in which Harry vanished were hard, especially with the war revving up into an all-out assault. It meant that everyone that Ginny knew was serving the war in some capacity or other. Thankfully due to Harry's connections, the death eaters hadn't fully taken over the ministry yet they were close. Then of course when Harry returned he wasn't healthy at all, never mind the fact his cousin was somehow added to the equation. Ginny thought she was mad at her boyfriend for leaving but when he returned all she felt was hurt. It eased a bit when Dudley explained why he had left, why he couldn't be around her. Ginny thought that when he woke up however that they would get some time together. That for once she could just bask in Harry's presence.

Then of course the ministry got taken over fully and all-out war had broken loose. Suddenly their home was at Grimmauld place where Sirius and Remus had taken charge to help the order in the war. Petunia was mending broken bones and cuts of order members. The twins were creating joke weaponry and Harry had disappeared into the chaos. The only remnant she had of him was when he would stumble into his room where Ginny spent most of her nights and collapse next to her. He never once complained that she was there, instead, he seemed to take comfort in it.

Ginny wished she knew where he was disappearing but nobody could give her a straight answer. Most of her family were so busy she was kind of left behind to help Dudley who had no clue how to act around magic. He was no longer allowed back at school due to the threat Voldemort posted on Harry's family.

So Ginny spent most of her time with him and had come to a kind of truce on hating him. He had weirdly seemed to become one of her closest friends. In fact they had started to walk the grounds, daily as Ginny taught him about the magical world. It was on one of their daily walks she burst into tears. He panicked and pulled her into a hug, uncertain of why she was sad.
"Ginny!" he exclaimed. She sobbed into his chest as he rocked her slowly.
"What's wrong?" he asked. When she calmed down she looked up into his eyes sadly
"I... I just miss him. I thought that just once he would take a break but he's come back from Horcrux hunting only to jump straight into a war."

Dudley bit his lip, he knew what she meant. Harry had gone into war mode the day after he woke up, demanding reports from Sirius. Dudley had been left to watch as his cousin slowly faded away, not even acknowledging their adventure.
"He has to Ginny, he has to find a way to win. I know it's not easy to hear but the Horcruxes were only part of the plan. Now he has to find a way to kill him."
"What's the point in winning a war when you lose the ones you love in the process, Dudley?"
"What do you mean?" he asked. Ginny pulled away and looked down.
"I love Harry, I love him and I have been so patient with him. I knew what I was getting in for when I started dating but I'm fifteen in a week and I cannot think of a day when I have not been terrified. I knew the likelihood was that he was going to die and when we were just friends I could handle that but then he told me he wanted to date me. I thought that meant something that he would at least try to live but I feel like he's killing me. I... I just can't lose him and I feel like I have." A heavy silence settled upon the pair, Ginny could feel the guilt eating her whilst Dudley just stared at her perplexed.

"You... you want to break up with him?" he asked. A tear rolled down her face which she wiped away quickly.
"No. Yes. No. I just want to know that he is at least looking for a way to survive this. I need to know that he doesn't want to die."
"How do you know he isn't looking for a way to survive. I've seen him, Ginny he loves you, I think we both know he does." Ginny turned away from him, trying to shield herself.
"Don't you think it's weird that out of us I am the only one that isn't getting involved like the others, I try and they push me away. They need Harry to die to win the war and they know that if I am around he won't." Dudley wanted to argue but he couldn't, she was making too much sense. Harry had even written that Ginny was the only reason he wanted to fight, that the world had no meaning if Ginny was in it.
"Sorry, Dudley. I know I sound crazy... I just need to know I have a chance of having Harry at the end of this." Dudley was about to reply when he looked up to see the one person he didn't want to see at that moment. Harry. Ginny turned to look at what Dudley was staring at. She froze when she saw Harry, shocked.

Harry nodded at his cousin who got the message. Dudley turned on his tail and left. Harry stared at his girlfriend for a moment before walking forward and grabbing her hand, Ginny shuddered, staring into his green eyes.

I'm sorry
"What for?" she asked. Harry took another step forward, eliminating all space between them. An unusual thing for him to do.
I have not been fair to you. I have expected you to let me do the things needed without complaining. I have not been what you deserve

Ginny gulped and let him pull her into a hug, feeling already slightly safer now he was there.
I thought when I came back that that was it. That I could leave the war behind and be myself with you and I now realise that I can't

"What do you mean?" she asked, apprehensive. Harry took a step back to drink her in
It means I heard what you said and you were right, you, Ginny deserve the world. You deserve someone that can hug and kiss you and not be afraid. You need someone that can give you their world, instead of destroying yours.

Ginny could feel the bile rise in her throat as she asked what he meant. Harry took a step back, creating some distance.
It means that whilst I want to be with you and trust me I do. It means that I cannot fight this war when at the end of it you might not be there because my actions will have lost you.

"You... want to break up?" she asked, her voice cracking. Harry's shoulders dropped, Ginny had never seen him so defeated. Then he nodded and Ginny could feel her world crumble. She wanted to yell and scream, bang his head against a wall. It wasn't fair that he made her fall in love just to break her heart. She couldn't do that, instead, she pulled him into a hug and kissed his cheek, feeling him stiffen. Then she turned on her heel and left, pretending like her heart hadn't been shattered beyond repair.
