A/N: For April 2022, I decided to take inspiration from a certain Netflix movie, whose concept I found to be very interesting if set in the Symphogear world.
Without further ado, Enjoy!
The Sunshine Project
"Hibiki! You'll never believe what came in the mail today!" Miku Kohinata was talking with her lifelong friend, Hibiki Tachibana, over the phone.
"What is it, Miku?" Hibiki asked.
"The tickets to the Zwei Wing concert in April next year!" Miku said ecstatically.
"That's great!" Hibiki replied with equal amounts of excitement. "But, why did you buy multiple tickets?"
"That way you can come with me. Why else would I buy multiple tickets?" Miku asked in return.
"But I don't know anything about Zwei Wing aside from the songs that you had me listen to." Hibiki said with less enthusiasm.
"That's why we can go together! So that way you can see for yourself just why I like them!" Miku exclaimed.
"Well… If you think I'll like them, then I'll gladly go with you!" Hibiki said.
Suddenly, a crash could be heard coming from Miku's backyard, more specifically the forest behind it. Needless to say, the sound startled Miku. "Hey, Hibiki? I have to go now. I'll call you again later."
"Okay." Hibiki replied. "Is everything alright?"
"Yeah." Miku lied. "I just have some chores I have to do before my parents get home later."
"I should probably go do my chores too." Hibiki chuckled. "Well, talk to you later, Miku!"
"Talk to you later, Hibiki!" Miku hung up the phone and ran to grab her jacket and investigate the strange crash.
Miku ran outside to see what had caused the crash. She was scared that the Noise were involved, but she kept going to investigate and ease her curiosity. At first, all she saw was a few trees that were knocked down, but as she got further in, she noticed that there were even more trees that were burnt and charred from what looked like an explosion of sorts, but there was no sign of any bombs or planes or anything. Confused, Miku decided to head back home in case this was the Noise's doing. And if it was, she didn't want to die for her curiosity.
On the way home, Miku thought about the destruction she saw in the forest. What could've caused it? She had no way of knowing for certain, but she couldn't help but wonder.
However, her curiosity would be cut short when she got to her backyard door, seeing that it was left wide open. "I could've sworn I locked it…" Nervous, Miku cautiously walked into her house.
Once she entered, Miku noticed a small trail of blood. Now scared, Miku reached for anything she could use to defend herself, should the need arise, before ultimately deciding to follow the trail. Eventually, the trail ended next to the bathroom door.
Miku took a deep breath before raising the object she grabbed on her way over her head and reached for the doorknob. However, the knob started turning by itself, causing Miku to back away and hide nearby.
Finding a spot, Miku got a good look at the intruder: An older woman with short black hair and what looked like a military uniform of sorts. But since when was there a military branch called "S.O.N.G."? Maybe it was a secret group? Miku needed to find out.
Suddenly, the woman sighed. "You can come out from hiding. I'm not going to hurt you." The woman said.
"Y-You knew I was here?" Miku asked. "Who are you? And why are you in my house?"
"First, My name's... Classified." The woman said. "Second, I needed some supplies to patch up an injury I took before crashing. Thankfully, you happened to have some."
"...Your outfit..." Miku said. "Are you in the military?"
The woman hesitated to respond. "Not exactly. It's complicated." She said. "Look, I need to leave before... bad things happen here."
"What kind of things? Am I in danger?" Miku asked.
"You will be if I'm here longer than I should be." The woman said. However, she stopped herself when she saw two tickets on a table on her way out. "...Hey, what year is it?"
Miku was confused by the question, but still answered. "It's... 2040. Why?"
The woman froze. "...Shit..."
"Is something wrong?" Miku asked.
"I'm in the wrong year. I was supposed to end up in 2036 and meet up with her." The woman said, rambling aloud to herself. "The machine must've taken damage and sent me to the wrong time..."
"Machine? Time?" Miku thought aloud. "Are you from the future?"
"That's not important right now, Miku." The woman said, before realizing what she said.
"How do you know my name?" Miku asked.
The woman sighed. "Fine, you win." She said as she walked over to Miku. "But before I answer your questions, tell me this: Are you Miku Kohinata, age 13, daughter of Haruka and Rui Kohinata?"
"Yes?" Miku answered. "Wait, how do you know my parents' names?"
"I'm getting to that." The woman said. "Lastly, have you called your best friend Hibiki Tachibana, the same age as you, daughter of Akira and Asuna Tachibana, to tell her about the Zwei Wing tickets? If so, how long ago was that call?"
"I just got off the phone with her a few minutes ago." Miku answered. "Wait, are you... Me?"
The woman quietly smiled at Miku. "Yes. I'm you, Miku Kohinata, from the year 2067." Miku was shocked to hear this news. She felt like she was going to faint, but Future Miku grabbed her by the collar of her shirt and pulled her back to her feet. Future Miku chuckled at her younger self's reaction, but she suddenly looked at the front door to the house with a serious expression. "I know it has to be a lot to take in, meeting your future self, but I'm afraid we're going to have to save freaking out for later... Because it's about to get so much weirder..." Future Miku reached for a necklace she had hidden under her uniform, and she started to sing a song that Miku had never heard before.
"Rei Shénshòujìng rei zizzl"
Suddenly, Future Miku was engulfed in a bright purple light. Moments later, She emerged from the light wearing a white and purple dress with large purple armored leggings. "What is that?!" Miku asked.
"A weapon with a long and complicated history." Future Miku said. "As much as I would love to tell that story, I need you to get ready to run on my signal. We were still in track around this time, right?"
"Y-Yes?"
"Perfect." Future Miku said as she summoned what looked like a mirror and aimed it at the door.
Suddenly, the door burst open, revealing two soldiers with guns. Without hesitation, Future Miku fired a laser from the mirror, obliterating the soldiers. "Run!"
Miku and Future Miku ran for the back door and headed towards the forest. "I can't believe you killed those people!" Miku shouted to her future self.
"Those things weren't people. Not anymore, at least." Future Miku said, which confused Miku. "Again, long story. For now, keep running!"
"I don't think that's a good idea, Miku." A voice echoed through the air, before dozens of armed guards emerged from nothing, along with a woman who wore a fancy black jacket with long brunette hair. "That is, unless you don't wish to keep on living."
Future Miku scoffed. "Surely you're not this stupid? Or do you think those guns can kill me with my Symphogear Active?"
"Who said you were the one I needed to kill?" The woman asked. "All my soldiers have to do is kill your younger self and you're history, and I'll do it myself if you resist."
Future Miku scoffed. "What is so worth hiding that you'd kill my wife, my past self, and anyone else who you deem worthless for it?"
"I get married in the Future?!" Miku asked.
"That's all you got from that?" Future Miku asked in response.
The woman chuckled. "At least she's focusing on what matters most. After all, I never killed Hibiki Tachibana. I would be crazy to kill off my biggest asset for any reason."
"I MARRY HIBIKI?!"
Future Miku pinched her temple. "I'm just gonna ignore my past-self for a bit... Stop being full of shit, Maya! Chris showed me the tapes of you tampering with the machine after Hibiki questioned something she found."
The woman named Maya dropped her cheerful expression and became serious. "If she's truly dead, then why did she personally ask me to bring you home?"
Future Miku froze. "What?"
Maya pulled out a recording device from her pocket. "If you still don't believe me, then listen for yourself." The woman pushed a button on the device and it sprung to life.
"Maya... I don't know what you did, but please... Bring Miku back here." The recording stopped.
"That... That can't be her..." Future Miku denied.
"Oh, but it is." Maya said. "Now, I'm sure you don't want to keep your 'precious sun' waiting, right? Just deactivate your Gear and come back with us."
Future Miku was conflicted. Was Maya telling the truth? Had Hibiki returned to 2067 while she was away? She felt herself gravitating towards Maya's extended hand, unsure if she was lying or not.
That is, until the sound of a bullet rang out in the distance before one of the soldiers closest to Young Miku exploded into dust. "Oi! Don't listen to her bullshit, Miku!" A voice called out. "Besides, I found your headstrong idiot of a wife!"
Suddenly, a flash of orange blew past the Young Miku. The flash let out a roar as they collided with Maya, sending her flying into Young Miku's house. Once the flash stood still, Future Miku was able to see the woman she loved more than anything else in the world, clad in her iconic orange and white armor with her medium-length light brown hair and bright yellow scarf. She had been reunited with her shining sun, Hibiki Tachibana. "...You have no idea how happy I am to see you again, Miku."
"That makes two of us then, Hibiki." Future Miku replied as she began to move closer to her wife, the two of them lost in each other's eyes as they were about to kiss.
Until a barrage of bullets takes out all of the soldiers closest to Young Miku as a woman in red armor holding a gatling gun arrives on the scene. Without hesitation, she grabs the young Miku and tosses her over her shoulder. "I get that this is supposed to be a touching reunion and all, but at least read the room before you two get yourselves turned into swiss cheese!"
Future Miku and Future Hibiki blushed as they remembered the soldiers still surrounding them. "Oh, right. Sorry, Chris!" Future Miku said.
"Just finish up with the rest of the bastards and I'll worry about getting mini-you outta here!" Chris said as she began to take Young Miku away from the battlefield.
"Wait! We can't just leave them!" Young Miku cried out.
"Oh don't worry, I've known those two for quite some time." Chris reassured the Young Miku. "Those things will be a cakewalk compared to the shit they've gone through."
As for the lovers, they quickly dispatched the soldiers within seconds before continuing their conversation. "How did you know where to find me?" Miku asked.
"Well, after Chris found me and explained the situation, we snuck back into the future and checked the logs to see when you ended up." Hibiki explained. "From there, I pretty much assumed the first place you'd go was your own house."
"But I still don't get it, Hibiki." Miku said. "Why did you go to 2036? What did you find?"
Hibiki was silent for a moment. "...I found the source of all of our problems." She turned to the rubble left by her earlier punch. "And it's all thanks to her."
The rubble suddenly began to shake before it exploded outwards. Maya emerged from the explosion, bushing off the remaining rubble from her damaged clothes, revealing a cybernetic suit beneath them, before turning to the Wielders. "You know, I was content just letting you rot in the past, Hibiki. But now, You've shown me that you're too much of a threat to be left alone."
"I'm flattered, Maya-san." Hibiki mocked. "But I'm afraid we've got other business to attend to. Miku?"
"Way ahead of you." Without hesitation, Miku summoned a mirror and let out a blinding flash of light that engulfed the area. Once the light faded, Miku and Hibiki were gone.
Maya clenched her fist in anger. "This isn't over!" She shouted, before she vanished from sight.
A/N: And with that, we end the one-shot!
Little things to note, besides the fact that this is inspired by The Adam Project (Which I personally thought was pretty good), I just wanted to clarify some things.
1. Miku's parents (to my knowledge) aren't actually named Haruka and Rui. Haruka was just a name that I felt fit Miku's mom and Rui is a reference to the father of The Adam Project, Louis (How? Google Translate)
2. Originally this was gonna take place in Edgeverse (AKA Hibiki (Another)'s universe) But I scrapped the idea and made it just be a completely original universe.
3. Same as with #1, Asuna's not Hibiki's name, but the inspiration for it came from a story EpicLinkSam wrote with Hibiki's mom and Saint-Germain
With that out of the way, Thank you so much for reading this one-shot. I shall see you all in the next one!
