Flying in the beautiful clear blue skies is Toothless and the Light Fury. Both Strike class dragons are just enjoying each other's company as they take in the beautiful sights before themselves. It was at that moment of peace Toothless had remembered Hiccup. He had been so caught up with spending time with the Light Fury that Hiccup had slipped out of his mind. He knows that they should return to Berk, but he is also scared that the gorgeous dragon beside him would not want to be on Berk after everything that humans have ever done to her. The Night Fury wants to have not only the Light Fury in his life, but also Hiccup as well. He knows that the albino dragon had every right to reject humans after the torture and trauma they had inflicted upon her.
During their time together, the Light Fury told him everything that happened on that blasted ship and who were the ones that had captured her in the first place. It boiled his blood in rage of the things that she endured at the hands of the dragon trappers and hunters. He vowed to himself when the next time he comes across them again, especially Viggo and Johann, who were the individuals that inhumanly captured the white dragon before allowing any of the torture she endured. He would not hesitate in assaulting them for their cruelty against dragons and those close to him. He also wanted to show her that not all humans are cruel creatures. Toothless hopes that she would give him a chance to show her that humans could be trusted and loved to their kind. "White Scales, I think we should head back to Berk now," Toothless said, taking a chance at trying to convince the white dragon to give humans another chance.
"Why? Don't you want to be free again, Toothless? I mean, you do have a tail-fin that allows you to fly alone," the Light Fury replied. Sure, she is still interested in learning more about Hiccup, but at the same time, she is also afraid. Afraid that once she opens herself back up again, she would be abused again. She knows that the auburn-haired man with a pair of green eyes has yet to give her reason that he would ever do anything like that of those dragon trappers. After spending several months being tortured by those cruel trappers, she was afraid that the human rider was just giving her false hope and security and was just luring her into a trap to harm her. She is confused about what she should do.
"Of course, I'm happy to have my automatic prosthetic tail-fin on right now. Because it gives me the chance to fly with you. But I do not feel like a prisoner or trapped when I am with Hiccup. I want to show you that not all humans are cruel and twisted creatures. Some are willing to help us out in our times of need. Please give me a chance to show you, White Scales. Let me heal your broken heart?"
"Okay, I'll try for you," Light Fury responded. Maybe Toothless was right? Hiccup had shown her kindness and who knows? She figured that Hiccup at the very least earned the right to be trusted for the meantime. Also, it seemed particularly important to Toothless and the least she could do was at least try to have a good relationship with Hiccup and other humans. And if by any chance that Hiccup is tricking her, she would flee Berk in a blink of an eye.
Toothless could not help himself from smiling his gummy grin. He is over the moon from the Light Fury trying to at least get to know Hiccup and his other human friends that he made. Now he gets what he wishes for and does not have to lose either one of them. Both dragons made their way towards Berk. Where an adventure that will change their lives forever awaits them.
Meanwhile, back on Berk, a flock of dragons makes their presence known. Many of the residents of Berk gathered with their weapons in their hands. Noticing that it was just Astrid coming back from gathering a flock of dragons from their home, Hiccup shouted out to stop them from attacking them, "Don't attack, guys! It's just Astrid and the dragons!" This caused the townsfolk of Berk to lower their weapons, but they gave the group of dragons hostile looks. They would not trust the winged beasts that easily after all the trouble dragons have caused over three centuries. No matter how much Hiccup, Dagur, Heather, Fishlegs, the twins, Snotlout, and Eret reassure them that nothing would go wrong.
Shortly after Eret, Heather, and Dagur had returned from their missions, they reported to Hiccup what had happened on their journeys. Hiccup was pleased to hear that the Berserker Tribe, Wingmaidens, and the Defenders of the Wing were willing to lend a hand if necessary. It felt good knowing that if things get tough that there is a backup if the situation calls for it. He also felt a great bit of curiosity and uncertainty about what had happened to Dagur and Heather. The two Berserker siblings had told him that they were not able to get inside the ship because a pack of aggressive dragons prevented them from doing their mission. Hiccup wondered just what type of dragon species were hostile towards the Berserker siblings. The description of the six dragons that had attacked them as they were medium size. With coloring of blood red with black markings on body and limbs. They were able to spray out very flammable acid. The six extremely aggressive dragons hunted like that of a wolf pack who would hunt down a wounded prey. With a stinger on the end of their tails. It was safe to say that these dragons are poisonous if their tails are to be a sign. Hiccup, with the help of Fishlegs, has been searching through their Books of Dragons for hours to see if they had any information on these dragons. Unfortunately, neither of them had any information on this new species. The two siblings were lucky that Grimmel had called them off. After their encounter with those dragons, the two siblings had to stay low profile in an uninhabited island just in case they were being followed. It's safe to say that they needed to tread cautiously with this unknown dragon species. Until he figures out the weakness of them.
Another thing that worries Hiccup was that Grimmel had called off those six dragons. Why would the Night Fury killer call off those dragons? Are these Grimmel's dragons, and if so, how is he controlling them to do his bidding? Did the older man do that to lead them into another trap? Or did he not know that Heather and Dagur were there? Eret had been clear that there are no accidents when it came to Grimmel. He wishes that Toothless was here so he could fly towards the enemies. But, unluckily, the Night Fury was nowhere to be found. Everything would be easier if Toothless was here. That way he would be able to get the answer to these problematic questions.
After Stormfly landed gently on the ground, Astrid hopped off her dragon. Hiccup makes his way towards Astrid when her feet touched the ground. "Welcome back, Milady," Hiccup greeted Astrid before he hugged her. Glad that his betrothed is back and unharmed. He knows full well that Astrid Hofferson is more than capable of protecting herself and others. But that does not mean that he was happy that nothing bad had happened to her. He recalled a time that he told her that he could not imagine a world without her in it. With all the adventures that they faced together, there was always that chance someone or something would separate them from one another. It terrified Hiccup that one of their adventures could lead to one of their lives being taken.
"It's good to be back, Babe," Astrid replied teasingly as she returned the hug. It had warmed her heart to see her future husband's care for her. There was a time where this sort of behavior would have embarrassed her to the depths of her soul. Now she enjoys it only if it was Hiccup; anybody else, not so much. These days she wonders how she lived without this sort of attention from Hiccup. She also wonders just how and when the young auburn-haired man had become her biggest weakness.
"Can we now start training dragons?" the Thorston twins begged the dragon-riding couple, interrupting their precious moment. The young couple both groaned disappointedly that the twins had ruined their moment. Hiccup is looking up towards the sky and noticing that it was starting to get late. Realizing it might just be better to start training in the morning Hiccup answers the twins.
"Sorry, guys. But we're going to have to start training tomorrow morning." This time it is the twins' turn to groan, disappointed that they had to wait longer than originally planned before getting the chance to train dragons. "Besides, it would be easier to train in the daytime when we can see what we're doing," Hiccup added to his statement after the twins were done groaning. That is when Fishlegs notices a certain hybrid dragon standing beside Stormfly. Fishlegs made a loud and excited squealing sound as he rushes towards the young Deathly Galeslash. The dragons are uncomfortable with the loud sound the large blonde-haired man made. Their extremely profound sense of hearing and the loud sound that Fishlegs made had caused their visions to start blurring, which was unnoticed by the dragon expert from Berk. He especially made Fog-Stalker feel uneasy with how this stranger who she does not know invaded her personal space, which turned into annoyance when Fishlegs grabbed one of her wings to see her wingspan's size. Pulling her wing back, she started hissing at Fishlegs as a warning to back off before she attacks him. Gratefully, the message was received. Fishlegs immediately backed away from the hybrid dragon. A group of Berkians was about to start to assault the unknown dragon before Stormfly shot warning tail shots at any of the Berkians that dared advanced towards the hybrid. It was also another message that the dragons will defend themselves from these people who think that they could harm them. Astrid pulls out her axe and readies herself to also counterattack anyone who dared to touch a scale on any of the dragons.
Nobody in Berk is crazy enough to attack a battle-ready Astrid. So, they wisely backed away, not wanting to fight, which led the two dragons to calm down seeing the humans backing away. Once the villagers are at a safe distance from the two dragons, Astrid throws a heated glare at Fishlegs. "Fishlegs!" the blue-eyed woman shouted at her former peer. The large Viking squeaked as he shrunk under the heat of the glare he received. No one in the crowd of people could blame him for cowering like that because an angry Astrid is bad for anyone's health. Feeling slightly guilty for scaring the man like that, Astrid would add an apology. "I'm so sorry for shouting at you like that, Fishlegs. It's just that you shouldn't have invaded the dragon's space like that. Please try to contain yourself from doing that again." In all honesty, she should have expected Fishlegs to do something like that. She knows that he did not mean any harm, but he should try not to freak out the dragons like that. The last thing Hiccup and she needed was a dragon to attack someone, which would only lead to more problems than they needed.
"I'm sorry, Astrid, but I had never seen a Deadly Nadder with four wings before," Fishlegs apologizes softly. He did not want the dragons to be uneasy around him. He vows he would never make that mistake again.
"It's okay, Fishlegs. I understand, but you should also apologize to Fog-Stalker for making her uncomfortable."
Fishlegs locks eyes with the Deathly Galeslash, moves slightly closer to her but is kept at a safe distance. As to not frighten her anymore than he already had before he apologized, "I'm so sorry, Fog-Stalker. I didn't mean to scare you. Could you ever forgive me?" Sensing that the unknown man is being sincere, she walks towards him before rubbing against the one Astrid called 'Fishlegs,' purring as the blue and black hybrid did so.
"Well, Fishlegs, you're half right earlier. Fog-Stalker is half Deadly Nadder, but also half Stormcutter," Hiccup joins the conversation by answering Fishlegs's statement. Fishlegs looked like a child that had been told that Snoggletog came early. Not only did Hiccup confirm that hybrid dragons exist, but also another dragon that was not in Berk's Book of Dragons. He wondered what other mysteries of dragons are out there. All the things he could learn about dragons that nobody in Berk ever known. He could not wait to learn everything that he had not known about dragons. But another Berkian noticed the hybrid had four wings, making him recall a memory from a horrible night twenty-one years ago. Stoick remembered that the dragon that had taken Valka had four wings. Not only did the chief of Berk feel anger, but also curious about if his son had encountered the same kind of dragon that had taken Valka all those years ago. He should try to ask him later when he gets the chance.
"Really?! How much more is there to learn?!" Fishlegs questions as loudly and excitedly as he has ever been. The twins and Snotlout roll their eyes at the nerd of their group going all out geek mode. In the abbreviated time with Hiccup, they saw someone that can finally keep up with the large man in his passion for learning about dragons. It felt unreal to them to see someone else be as big of a nerd with their friend as Hiccup. They also felt relieved and happy for Fishlegs because he had someone else to talk about what they felt were boring facts about dragons. Now, finally, the Gods answered their prayers to have someone else sit through one of Fishlegs's speeches. They felt happy because they discovered someone that likes to talk about dragons as much as Fishleg. The three adults had felt slightly guilty for going out of their way in avoiding their friend when he got like this and wishes that someone would come along that shared Fishlegs's passion. So, to see that Fishlegs finally had someone to talk about dragons gave them a grateful feeling.
Stoick is trying to not lose his temper and patience because he did not want to have another argument with Hiccup. He had been trying the whole day to have a moment to speak with his son alone, but Hiccup would avoid him and focus on working with Fishlegs on their books about dragons. It would seem Hiccup had not wanted anything from him for today. The aging chief guessed he would not blame Hiccup for this behavior. Stoick had given genuine thought about the advice that Hilda told him about not trying to forcefully change who Hiccup was. Did he push his son too far by trying to mold the fishbone boy to the best Viking Hiccup could be? Was he truly too hard on his son which would lead him to leave Berk for their mortal enemy? Could Stoick have avoided all of this had he not pushed Hiccup to be more like him? Should he have tried to accept his son for who exactly he is? These are the questions that have been running through his mind ever since Hilda, Gunner, and Gobber asked him to try to understand the man his son grew up to become. But even though he had been in mental debates with himself about the option of rekindling his relationship with Hiccup, there is one hurdle stopping him from accepting Hiccup for who he is. He just could not agree with his son's preaching about peacefully living beside dragons after everything they have done. Especially when after what happened with his wife. After three centuries of fighting, it was hard to let go of the hatred for the scaled beasts. All the families that have suffered from being raided by the Dragons; he cannot overlook that.
"It looks like we finally found someone as big of a geek for dragons as Hiccup," Heather complimented Fishlegs, whose face instantly turned red as a tomato from the blush. His heart rate accelerated from the kind words from the beautiful black-haired woman with a pair of green eyes. Not only did Dagur give Fishlegs a deadly insane glare, but Ruffnut also threw a glare, but towards Heather. The female twin walked towards Fishlegs before grabbing one of his arms and started dragging Fishlegs away from Heather while Dagur daringly dragged his sister away too. Astrid watched intrigued as both her friend and former peer were being dragged away from each other.
"That's interesting," Astrid says. The blue-eyed woman understands that Dagur would not appreciate that his sister is making advancements towards another man. But why would Ruffnut not want Fishlegs near Heather? This is the question that she would like to have the answers to. It had just occurred to Astrid that Ruffnut might have been jealous of Heather. Who would have ever thought that Ruffnut might have feelings towards Fishlegs? Because the twenty-one-year-old woman had not seen that happening in a hundred years.
"Yeah, we should turn in for the night. Are you ready, Milady?" Hiccup interjects, ready to get some sleep for the long day ahead of them tomorrow. Just when they are about to head towards Astrid's parents' home Stoick questions loudly.
"Wait, Hiccup?! Where are you staying tonight? Why not stay with me for the night?" The chief of Berk figures that if his son could stay with him, they will have a chance to rekindle their relationship. He might as well try to get to know his son and this time he will try not to mention anything about dragons.
Before the green-eyed, young man could reply to his father's question, Astrid immediately answered the question. "He would love to stay with you, Stoick." The blonde-haired woman felt guilty for doing that, but she too wanted Hiccup to fix his relationship with Stoick. You only have one father in your life, and she wants Hiccup to allow his father into their lives again. She knows that if she had not answered Stoick's invitation for Hiccup to stay the night in his childhood home, there was a huge chance that he would not try. So, she figuratively pushed Hiccup towards the direction of repairing the broken relationship with her soon-to-be father-in-law.
"Well-," Hiccup tries to excuse himself from his father's invitation, but was interrupted by a glare from Astrid. Knowing what his betrothed wanted, he decided to give her what she wanted. "Sure, I'll stay with you, Dad." Astrid smirked confidently and smugly. Now, if everything goes smoothly, the broken father and son relationship could be repaired to what it's supposed to be if they talk to one another without arguing. She silently prays to the gods that this would happen because family should always be together.
Stoick sighs in relief that Hiccup agreed to stay with him for the night. He knows that it was mostly Astrid that made Hiccup go with him for the night. He will make sure to thank her later. "Speaking of getting rest, the dragons will have to sleep inside the cages at the Killing Ring." This had not gone well with the dragon riders, who tried to make a case for the dragons' choice of where they would want to rest. After a long back and forth, they agreed for the dragons to stay in the woods. So, the villagers are more comfortable, and that way nobody on either side will get hurt. Fog-Stalker and Stormfly had chosen to accompany Astrid to her parents' house. Stoick strongly disagreed with both dragons staying with the Hoffersons, but Hilda and Gunner insisted that both dragons could stay with them. Reluctantly, Stoick allowed this to happen in the hopes that it would help him get on Hiccup's good side. Everyone went their separate ways to have their slumber for the night.
"Oh, yeah. I almost forgot to give Stormfly some chicken," Gunner announced as he remembers what had transpired last night between Stoick and Stormfly. During the walk back to her parents' home, Astrid told Gunner and Hilda the story of how they rescued Stormfly and Fog-Stalker from the dragon auction, and how Stormfly is like a mother to the hybrid since Hiccup and Astrid had never found the young dragon hybrid's biological parents. It had plucked at Hilda's heartstrings. Hilda petted and scratched the orphan dragon, who had seemed to take a liking towards Astrid's mother. Once they made it back to the Hoffersons' residence, Gunner had gotten out some chicken and handed it to the Deadly Nadder. Stormfly quickly devours the chicken before she decides to share her chicken with Fog-Stalker by regurgitating some of it, which Fog-Stalker slurps up.
This is disgusting for both Gunner and Hilda to witness. Even though it is gross, Hilda found the loving display of care shown by Stormfly cute for the young hybrid in a peculiar way. As a mother, she could relate to the relationship between Fog-Stalker and Stormfly in an odd way. After feeding on the regurgitated bird, the hybrid comes towards Hilda, rubbing her snout against her stomach, purring in delight as she does so. "I think she wants you to be her rider, Mother," Astrid informs her mother to explain as to why the hybrid dragon is acting this way. Astrid always believed that the dragons had a good sense of judgment of one's character. So far, the hybrid dragon likes her mother, so it was not that hard for Astrid to theorize that was the reason for Fog-Stalker's behavior around Hilda.
"You think so?" Hilda questions, both honored and nervous. She did not think she would have a dragon this soon. Not that she was complaining because who would not want the sweet and caring dragon. The hybrid dragon nodded her head before she slightly pushed her snout against Hilda's stomach trying to get more scratches from Hilda. Getting the message, Hilda scratches the dragon underneath her chin. "I hope I don't screw up too badly." Hilda could not help feeling overwhelmed with the start of training dragons.
"Don't worry, Mama. You'll be fine. Hiccup and I will show you the basics in the morning," Astrid encouraged. With that, the Hofferson family headed to their beds for a good night's rest. The first thing in the morning the family did was get ready to head to the Killing Ring where the classes for dragon training began. Astrid is wearing a sleeveless blue shirt with her usual dark spiked skirt with matching boots alongside the black leggings she wore underneath her skirt. Her metal shoulder guards and her tan cloth bracers on her arms. She is wearing a belt that is decorated with silver skulls. Once the three had made it to the Killing Ring, they found Hiccup deep inside his thoughts. Hiccup is wearing a green long-sleeved tunic with a deep brown fur vest. Dark grayish brown legging with a brown fur boot. His sword is in its sheath, which is attached to his belt. Astrid walked towards Hiccup before planting a kiss on his cheek. Having gained Hiccup's attention, Astrid pulls away from him as a blush takes over her betrothed's face. Hiccup snaps out of his thoughts from the unexpected kiss from Astrid as the blue-eyed woman greets him after pulling away from the kiss, "Good morning, Babe. I do hope you had a wonderful night's sleep."
"It's great that you're here now," Hiccup replied as he gets lost staring into Astrid's sapphire eyes. He could spend the entire day staring into the beautiful eyes of his Astrid and never even get bored doing so. Astrid knows that something is bothering Hiccup.
"Hiccup, are you alright?" Astrid asked, concerned for the well-being of Hiccup.
"It's just that…Where did Toothless go, Astrid?" Of course, it would be about Toothless. Astrid engulfed Hiccup in a loving and comforting embrace. She knows more than anybody how attached to Toothless that Hiccup is. It broke her heart to see Hiccup like this. She wishes that she knew where Toothless and the Light Fury had gone. Unfortunately, she, like Hiccup, had no clue as to where the two Strike class dragons went. After training, she and Stormfly might go looking for the Night Fury. With Stormfly being a part of the Tracker class, she has the most believable chance at picking up the scents of the Furies. All she had to do was hope that the window of opportunity for the Deadly Nadder is not closed. Astrid felt like she should give this a chance to bring peace to the worried mind of Hiccup's. It was then that the two Furies dragons, silent as a mouse, had entered the Killing Ring.
Because his back is facing the two approaching dragons, Hiccup had not known about his dragon's return yet. Astrid has worn a rare mischievous smirk on her face. The young woman is well known for her more serious personality, but only one person could bring a more playful side to her and his name is Hiccup. She knows that Toothless might be trying to surprise Hiccup. It would not be the only time that the black-colored scaled dragon would be mischievous with his rider. Releasing from the hug she was giving, so the slowly creeping Night Fury could do whatever he was planning to do. Hiccup's green eyes followed Astrid as he wears a confused expression. The former heir of Berk had not noticed the Night Fury creeping ever so slowly behind him before Toothless quickly and gently as possible pounced Hiccup from behind. Once on the ground with his rider pinned beneath him, Toothless waited for Hiccup to turn around so the nightly dragon could assault Hiccup with his tongue. And that is exactly what would happen when Hiccup was able to turn around to see who or what pounced on him. "What the…Toothless, where-," Hiccup demands but gets interrupted by the sticky tongue of Toothless's. "Gross! Please stop that, Bud. You know that doesn't wash out," Hiccup could not help but complain as Toothless got off him while laughing at Hiccup's misfortune.
Meanwhile, the albino dragon makes her way towards the black-scaled dragon and sits beside him. Hiccup is having a demanding time getting the sticky saliva off him but when he does, he immediately hugs his dragon. Astrid was laughing while Hiccup struggled to get the saliva off him. Getting most of the sticky substance off himself, Hiccup, as quickly as he could, proceeds to hug his dragon as if the Night Fury has his life depended on it. "Bud, don't you ever scare me like that? I thought that you left me, Bud," Hiccup told the Night Fury. Toothless felt guilty for making his best friend think that he would leave him like that. Toothless warbled as if to tell Hiccup he would never do something like that. "I know, Bud. I love you too," Hiccup replies to Toothless. It warmed the hearts of Astrid, Hilda, and Gunner to see Hiccup reunite with his dragon.
But what Astrid wanted to know is if Hiccup and Stoick talked to one another. "Babe, did you and your father talk last night?" Astrid had to ask the question on her mind since she woke up from her sleep. She feared that Hiccup would avoid the needed conversation with Stoick.
"Well…You see, Milady…He tried to have a conversation with me. But I wasn't in the mood to talk with him, so unfortunately we didn't get a chance to," Hiccup nervously answers truthfully, knowing full well that he could not lie to Astrid or lie for that matter. It was no secret that the former heir was not the best at lying and Astrid would immediately know that he was lying. Shortly after returning to his childhood home, he was so lost in his worry for Toothless that when Stoick tried to have the dreaded talk with him, he would politely excuse himself before Stoick could even tell him anything. Besides, he figures all his father would say was how disappointed that he is that Hiccup was not like Stoick. With the whole Toothless and Light Fury date mixed with being forced to stay the night with his father who had not ever been interested in learning who Hiccup is in the past. It was not much of a shock that Hiccup would not be comfortable around Stoick.
Astrid figured that this might have happened. But she is slightly disappointed that father and son had not worked out their differences yet. "Hiccup? Why didn't you have a sit-down talk with Stoick?"
"I promise I'll talk to him later, Astrid. It just wasn't the right time for that."
"Alright, Babe. I forgive you. But please give him a chance?"
"Thanks, Milady." Hiccup also wants to make amends or fix his relationship with his father as well. He just did not know how to do it or the direction the two Haddock men could take to fix their relationship. A few moments later, many of the villagers reluctantly showed up. After Toothless had called all the dragons over, so were the very few Berkians that are willing to train dragons. "The beginning of the friendship between Vikings and dragons is an established bond that is built on trust. And the first step is to remove any weapons," Hiccup instructed them before cries of disapproval, which was silenced quickly by an annoyed Astrid. Which Hiccup thanked her for. "Having weapons on you and being around dragons that don't know you makes them nervous. Each could be extremely dangerous, not only for you, but also for the dragons as well. Would you feel safe around your enemies with weapons and without anything to defend yourselves? Of course not. It's the same way that the dragons feel around us humans," Hiccup added to his lesson reserving nods of understanding from most of the people of Berk. When Hiccup puts it like that, it oddly made sense.
"Speaking of making them nervous, the next step is to try not to panic. I know it doesn't make any sense, but trust me when I say that if you are uneasy around dragons, a dragon can sense that and it would also make them uncomfortable as well," Hiccup continues his lecture and the villagers try and most of them startled the dragons by their uneasiness. But they quickly corrected their mistakes before something awful happened. "By doing these two first steps, you're showing the dragons that you're no threat. The last step is to bring your hand like this," Hiccup explained by lifting his hand out for Toothless. "And you want them to come to you." Toothless slowly walks towards Hiccup and puts his snout in the palm of his hand. "Any questions?" Hiccup asked putting his arm down while the villagers watch the display of friendship between Hiccup and Toothless.
A villager would ask how Toothless was able to gather the dragons to the Killing Ring by simply roaring. Hiccup would explain that Toothless is the king of the dragons and can call the dragons to him. He had accidentally told them when an uncertain Berkian that Toothless also could control dragons if he wanted to. It was at that moment much of the people had a sinister idea. If they were able to kill this Night Fury, would they be able to order the dragons that Grimmel had at his disposal, but also any wild dragons that might wander into their land? Shouts ringed through the area, "Death to the Night Fury!"
