Chapter 86
Officer Dough Penhall of the 21 Jump Street program stood in a blue running suit with red stripes holding a whistle as he was sent into the school as a substitute gym teacher. He looked fresh out of college with a rounded face and dark brown hair that was beginning to thin on top.
Mr. Hinkley's class wandered into the gym after lunch for the scheduled time. Judy and Tom were with the class and keeping their cover as students.
Kyle called out, "Where's Mister Hicks?" he looked about the for the regular gym teacher.
Dough stepped forward, "I'm Mr. Penhall and I will be filling in for the week. Now, you must be Mr. Hinkley's class. Get changed and we will be running track outside today."
Tom played his cover, "I didn't bring any gym clothes. I guess I won't be running."
Dough smirked, "The school has clothes for you to borrow."
Sam squinted as the nanites gave her information. "They know each other." she spoke softly to herself.
Tony was standing close and overheard her. He whispered, "What?"
"They know each other." she whispered back. "The little nano dudes told me."
Tony cocked an eyebrow, "Interesting."
They watched as the two officers were in a mock stare down as Tom had to establish himself as a troubled student for his cover.
Dough stated, "You really want detention?"
"Fine." he huffed and gave a poor attitude.
Kyle spoke up, "Man! Now we got a sub gym coach. I tell ya, 1985 is the worst year ever."
Sam remarked, "2020 is far worse."
He asked, "Really!" He understood they were dealing with some very strange situations in the future. He looked to Tony who nodded in agreement. "2020 is bad."
Judy asked, "What are you talking about?" The book excuse made no sense in the context given.
Kyle went tight lipped, "Nothing!" He crossed his arms and muttered, "Just ruined my whole class. I had the most awesome class of the whole school and it was just ruined."
Dough ordered, "Get changed and get on the field."
The students slowly wandered towards the locker rooms. To Judy, Sam and Rhonda seemed to be chummy while she lingered behind. She observed the girls and listened to them talk as they arrived at their lockers.
Rhonda stated, "I wish I could do more to help out." She glanced at Judy standing nearby. "You know…with the book." she covered.
"Me too." Sam nodded.
She kept her voice low, "You think maybe you can do to me what was done to Tony. Mind imprint?"
Sam blinked, "Why would you want that?"
"If I'm a doctor then I can know what to do on this end if those…little robots…get out of hand." she figured.
"I'll look into it." she promised.
Other girls filtered into the locker room to change for class. Ali Mills spied Sam and Rhonda as she came to her locker to change. She greeted the pair.
"Sam! Rhonda!" she cheered.
Rhonda replied, "Hey Ali. How was your Christmas?"
"It was good. How was yours?" she asked gathering the envelope from her bag.
"Good." Rhonda replied.
She handed her the envelope, "Can you get this to Tony? He dropped it the night of the battle of the bands. It's a ticket to an air show."
"Oh!" Rhonda grasped the envelope wide eyed for she knew the ticket for a future air show.
Ali mentioned, "I read the ticket. It's dated really weird. It's dated for July but in the year 2022. Isn't that just wild?" she asked amused figuring it was an error.
Rhonda opened the envelope and pulled out the ticket to ensure it was whole. She found it was not damaged and gave a sigh of relief, "Yeah! Weird."
Judy got a look at the ticket from over Rhonda's shoulder. She mentioned, "That looks like a real ticket but the date is all wrong."
Ali agreed, "Like that weird money that was going around." She introduced herself, "I'm Ali Mills. You must be new here."
"Judy Hoffs." she greeted in return. "Weird money?"
Ali nodded and then pulled out a dollar bill from her wallet in her purse. "Check this out!" she handed one of the bills from the future that Sam spent to Judy. "Looks so real, huh. I heard they even sent a F.B.I. guy in to find the bills. I guess they found a bunch of money and some quarters all dated wrong. That's just wild, huh!"
Judy examined the bill and knew it was real but dated wrong. She handed her the bill back, "That is wild. Any idea where it came from?"
Ali informed, "I think it was a joke but rumor has it there is a time traveler here in the school."
Sam let out a deep sigh.
Judy made a mental note of Sam's reaction. She laughed, "That's a wild rumor."
"My boyfriend Daniel thinks we have a time traveler." she mentioned off hand.
Judy could not help but ask, "Why does he think the school has a time traveler?"
"There is the money and now movie tapes. I saw one myself! It was called Titanic. The movie took two VHS tapes and was this story of a girl named Rose who meets a boy named Jack on the Titanic and there is this rare jewel that Rose's boyfriend took aboard." she explained. "It didn't look like something from someone's garage. It looked professional. The credits at the end of the movie was made in 1997. I can't explain it!" she confessed.
Rhonda miffed, "Sure, Ali gets to see the Titanic but not me." She then asked, "What tape?"
Sam swallowed hard, "You saw that on a VHS tape, Ali?"
She nodded, "A friend of my dad got it. Apparently, there is a whole bunch of tapes with all these different movies floating around out there. My dad just got one called Airwolf Air Show. Odd, on that ticket that Tony dropped it said Airwolf was a feature. Any idea what Airwolf is?"
Sam gulped, "Where is the tape?"
"My dad has it." she repeated.
"Can you get it from him?" Sam winced.
Rhonda asked, "How many of these tapes are there, Ali?"
"I don't know." she replied. She had finished changing, "See you on the field." She left the locker room a bit bewildered by Sam and Rhonda's concerns.
Judy observed Sam and Rhonda's reactions. Both girls seemed upset. "I'll see you on the field." she mentioned and soon followed Ali out.
Sam looked to Rhonda and stated, "We need to speak to Mr. H."
"Right after gym." she agreed.
School Athletic Field
As Sam emerged onto the field with Rhonda she found she was the center of attention for Johnny and his karate classmates.
Johnny stood by looked at Sam for he saw the Airwolf tape. He looked to his friends, "If that tape is legit then her real name is Samantha Hawke and she owns that chopper."
Bobby stated, "She's got to be the time traveler. Maybe that chopper is also a time machine."
Dutch debated, "Said on the tape that is was top secret and could do mach one."
Johnny then approached as his friends lingered back. "Hey Sam!" He gave her a smile.
Rhonda whispered to Sam, "Oh' boy. Here comes trouble."
She gave a nod in agreement and replied, "Hi Johnny."
He became coy as he started to walk with the two girls. "I ah, saw this home movie over the weekend. Funny, you were in it."
Sam closed her eyes and asked, "Airwolf?"
"Yeah!" he nodded grinning. After watching that home movie of the air show he completely forgot all about losing Ali and his feud with Daniel. His focus was now on Sam and that movie. "Can I see the chopper?"
She shook her head, "No!"
"Is it in that hangar you hang out at?" he pressed.
She stopped and looked him dead in the eye. "Didn't you pay attention to the documentary I made? It's a top secret chopper in the 80's. My uncle helped design it and flew it on top secret missions for the C.I.A.. He hid it from them. After it was decommissioned and left to rot, my dad bought it. We restored it, minus the guns and fly it at air shows. We alternate the stations. This next air show, I will be the engineer."
"Is next air show July 16th 2022?" he asked figuring he found the allusive time traveler.
She nodded, "Yup! And you will have to wait decades to see it." She walked away annoyed.
Johnny stood beside himself. His heart raced as he found a new crush. "Damn, she's hot!"
Meanwhile
Michael Knight walked into the teacher's lounge for lunch. He spied a group of teachers all staring at the television. He came over to see what had caught their attention. His mouth dropped as he spied an image of Sam, sporting the flight suit with her parents on screen from footage taken at an air show.
On the television the footage played with Sam acting as a host. "Now that you have seen what Airwolf can do let me give you a little back story on this old bird. She was a top secret attack helicopter back in the 80's. My Uncle, the late Stringfellow Hawke, helped designed her and he flew her on top secret missions into the Middle East and other hot spots around the globe. What makes Airwolf so special, even to this day, is the fact that she is the only attack helicopter that is capable of mach one. Now, today Airwolf no longer flies missions and is a living museum. The weapons systems are disabled and we restored the interior to the original but still upgraded the sensors and computers. Come on! I'll show you inside."
On the screen the scene changed as Sam recorded the inside of the chopper with her cell phone and continued the documentary she made for the sale's booth. "This here is the engineer's station. Airwolf's original crew consisted of only three: Stringfellow Hawke, Caitlin O'Shannessy and my other uncle, Dominic Santini. Uncle Dom was the engineer while Uncle String and Caitlin were the pilots. I'll show you that station next."
Soon the screen displayed the footage of the view of the pilot's seat. Sam sat down and continued, "Airwolf had one of the first heads up display. Way advanced for its time. I am going to mount a 'go pro' on the helmet so you can get a bird's eye view of what it's like to fly."
Michael found the remote and turned the player off, thus stopping the footage. All eyes turned to see who turned off the video. Michael asked, "Where did you get this from?"
A male teacher with thick glasses and dark hair replied, "Some students brought it in. The kids who go to that karate place." He asked, "Is that woman one of our students? Is that real?"
Michael marched over to the player and retrieved the tape. He found it was a common blank cassette found at a local store that was used to copy Sam's DVD she produced for the air shows.
Another teacher asked, "Where are you going with that?"
"I'm taking it to Sam." he huffed annoyed and began to march out of the room.
The teachers all began to gossip amongst themselves as Michael left with the tape. They too wondered if perhaps Sam was a time traveler after all.
Afternoon
The class wandered back to the classroom. They found Michael Knight, Stringfellow Hawke, Caitlin and MacGyver all standing around the broken cabinet looking rather frustrated and worried.
Judy Hoffs and Ton Hanson simply lingered back to observe the situation.
Sam spoke up, "I know! Someone must have stolen the movies and the player we had here."
Michael held up a VHS tape, "Not only stole but made copies as well. This is the air show footage you took, Sam. The teachers were watching it in the lounge."
She grasped the tape and let out a deep sigh, "I guess I'm not safe here anymore now."
Tom and Judy traded glances. Safe! They never thought that there could be a safety issue.
Caitlin assured, "It's been passed around but things don't go viral here. We can contain this."
She shook her head, "Johnny Lawrence and his karate pals already saw it." She glanced at Rhonda, "Tony dropped his ticket to the air show over the holiday. Ali Mills found it. She gave it to Rhonda to give to Tony but she read it. She was asking about Airwolf. The Airwolf tape is going all over the school and outside the school. That tapes explains what Airwolf is a what it does. At the very least I have exposed Airwolf."
Judy asked, "What is Airwolf?"
String stated, "That's classified."
Ralph spoke up, "Bill called me. He told me the police were now investigating the money and the tapes and they sent in three cops. He thinks two went to my classroom. This morning, Judy and Tom both came in."
Tom asked, "Who is Bill?"
"Bill Maxwell. He's FBI." Ralph told him. "I assume you and Judy are the undercover officers sent in. He said you were brought in from an undercover narcotics unit that specialized in sending officers into schools as students. The Jump Street program."
Judy then reached into her bag and removed her badge, "Well…today was the shortest undercover assignment I ever had." She revealed she was indeed a police officer.
Caitlin smirked, "I did that same when I was a rookie. Sent me into high school to sniff out drugs."
Tom asked, "You are a cop too?"
"I was." she informed. "I flew chopper for the highway patrol. Then I was recruited to fly Airwolf. I sent myself into school to help protect Sam as she is here for her safety."
String asked, "Who is the third cop?"
Tom informed, "Dough was sent in as a gym teacher."
Tony chuckled, "I knew that guy was a cop."
Judy asked, "What exactly have we stumbled into? At first I thought it was a case of counterfeiting with the money. Then those videos started showing up. I haven't seen the Airwolf tape myself. We did get a tape at the Jump Street chapel that got our attention."
Sam asked, "What movie did you get?"
"It's a highly advanced computer animation called WALL-E that is copyrighted from 2008." she explained.
Karl stated, "We saw WALL-E. That was good. I liked it."
Rhonda rebutted, "But it didn't have any real musical numbers in it. Frozen did rock."
Tom asked, "Where are these movies coming from?"
Sam confessed, "They are from my personal collection. I brought them here to share with the class. We had the movies and the player locked up. Someone stole it, made copies and are passing those copies around."
Judy stated, "But the movies are pre dated to future dates."
"Because they are from future dates." she told them.
The two officers traded glances a bit confused. Judy asked, "How is that possible?"
Sam explained, "It's simple. I brought the movies to the past with me to share with my friends."
Judy and Tom both stood a bit taken. They blinked for the confession sounded ridiculous on the face of it. Tom cocked an eye, "Um…what are we missing?"
Karl cheered, "Sam has a wormhole!"
"What?" Tom asked wondering if they were being fed a fictional story.
"It's not my wormhole. I just accidentally made it." she rebutted.
Michael addressed the officers. "A wormhole is hole that goes through space/time fabric to make a connection at each end. It could be used to travel from one planet to another in theory. Sam accidentally created a stable wormhole on Earth that is connecting our time to the future, the year 2022 to be exact. She was working on a new kind of engine, called a gravity engine when an accident happened and created the wormhole. We have been protecting the wormhole and Sam ever since."
Sam confessed, "The money was me. I took it out of the bank in my time and spent it here. I didn't know it was different. I brought the movie here too. Thing is the original movies are on digital disk, not VHS format. There is a player for the movies that can be hooked up to one of your old style tube televisions. That's what we did in class. As a treat the class would watch movies that have not been made yet. Someone stole the movies on disk and the player, made copies of the movies and those movies are out there being passed around."
Tom rubbed the side of his head, "Ya know…this is real hard to believe."
Tony grinned, "You don't know the half of it, Officer."
He blinked, "There is more?"
He nodded, "When Sam was talking about the Cylons and the Galactica that was not made up. There is an alien element to all this. Also, I'm a sixty year old man in an 18 year old body. My mind was sent back through time so I know what the future holds."
Tom seemed unbelieving, "An alien element, huh?"
"Baltar Research and Development." Tony stated. "Could be alien."
Judy asked, "When you say 'alien' do you mean illegal or…" she pointed up above her head. She glanced around hoping someone would confess that it was a prank. She noticed the nods of agreement.
Ralph stated, "Aliens as in space ships."
Tom stated, "Well…this assignment went from slightly odd to completely bizarre."
Sam suggested, "How about we get the other cop in here, hook up the VHS player and show them the Airwolf tape along with a debriefing. It would better if we are all on the same page."
"We can do that." String agreed.
