Act 2
INT. AVALANCHE CENTER (DAY 1 LATE AFTERNOON)
A very agitated young man, JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR), bursts into the Avalanche Centre shouting. Everyone comes to full alert. PRENTISS and LEWIS and SGT. DARBEN rush to the lobby to help.
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
(To people outside the door as he enters) No! Get away from me - I'm fine - I just want some answers! (To the room) Who the hell is in charge here!?! (To SGT. DARBEN) Answer me!!! Why are those cops saying that...that..slut killed my best friend???
Beat. TWO OFFICERS follow JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM into the building - looking like they are going to apprehend the man, but SGT. DARBEN waves them off.
SGT. DARBEN
Easy there son. No need for shouting.
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
Wrong! That whore! How could she?!? (To PRENTISS) How about you can you tell me? I want answers now - or I am/
PRENTISS
Sir? I assume you are here to speak to the FBI? I'm Supervisor Special Agent Emily Prentiss and you can speak to me and my colleagues - we will try and answer all of your questions. But first, I need you to take a breath and calm down.
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
Calm down? Calm down... I...I...How? Why? Please...
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM is overcome and hunkers down in the middle of the lobby holding his head like it is going to explode.
LEWIS
You're Justin aren't you? Justin - I need you to listen ok? Just breathe. Justin I can't tell you how glad I am that you're here. I know that you are going to be a huge help, ok?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
If she...if she...it's all my fault.
LEWIS
Justin - it's ok. Come with me and we'll figure it all out ok? Come we'll go talk in the back room alright?
LEWIS gently leads JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM towards a small office they've set up for interviews. PRENTISS follows raising her eyebrows at SGT. DARBEN.
SGT. DARBEN (to the OFFICERS)
What happenned?
OFFICER
He surprised us, sir. We told him you were hoping he could come meet with the agents here at the Avalanche Center because he may have some information about the case and he agreed. We provided him some additional details in the car and he just got really quiet - then we parked and suddenly he was slamming in here.
SGT. DARBEN
Well - no harm I suppose. Although I you'd best return to the station - I'll make sure he gets home alright after the Agents are done questioning him, poor kid.
CUT TO
EXT. SKI RESORT (DAY 1 LATE AFTERNOON)
ALVEZ and JAREAU are riding down the ski lift.
JAREAU
Quite the view. It's kinda neat that they let us ride this direction.
ALVEZ
Yeah - nothing like a badge eh? But weirdly this is the second time this season for me - although I guess the Sulphur Mountain was a gondola not a lift.
JAREAU
Sounds cozy.
ALVEZ
So do you want to take the lead on questioning Suzy? Then I guess we should do what we can to map the unsub's movements until Prentiss is ready for us all to pull together. Hmmm do you figure the unsub came back to the resort before moving on?
JAREAU
Makes sense you'd think there would be things in her hotel room to collect - unless there is another place she could have skied to from where she triggered the avalanche? I wonder if they've shared any close circuit camera footage with the police - she likely has some sort of vehicle. Shall I call Garcia?
ALVEZ is already dialing before JAREAU has said the word "call".
FOR CALL - CUT BETWEEN SKI LIFT and BAU GARCIA'S OFFICE
ALVEZ
I'll do it.
GARCIA (on phone)
Hey Newbie - can I just say that I am not making nearly enough progress on figuring out who these crazy cold hearted killers might be - that said what can your personal Queen of Ice provide?
ALVEZ (on phone)
You'll get there - you always do - and I think you meant "nice". (ALVEZ glances over at JAREAU who gives him a look) Garcia, we're actually just riding down on the lift so we can meet up with our witness in a minute so I can't talk yet - but we have a couple things for you to check out then I'll call back when I get somewhere less windy?
GARCIA (on phone)
Snow problemo.
ALVEZ
Can you find out if the police gathered any close-circuit footage from the hotels yet and whether or not they've clocked the unsub. We're thinking we mainly want to figure out what type of vehicle she was using and whether or not she came back after the avalanche.
GARCIA (on phone)
Easy freezy.
ALVEZ
And can you check if this is the most likely place the unsub would return to after triggering the avalanche or if there is another location she may have headed for? Oh we've got to jump. BBSL
GARCIA (Softly)
You'd better Be Back Soon, Lover.
GARCIA and ALVEZ both hang up with a secret smile.
JAREAU
BBSL?
ALVEZ (Deadpan)
Be Back Sooner or Later
JAREAU
Of course. (to lift operator) Hi - I"m looking for Suzy Hansen - I was told she was down here?
SUZY HANSEN - LIFT OPERATOR
Yah that's me. What can I do for you folks?
JAREAU
I'm Agent Jareau with this F.B.I. and this is Agent Alvez. We have some questions for you about events leading up to yesterday. Can someone cover for you here?
SUZY HANSEN - LIFT OPERATOR
Yeah. Oy Jamie - can you cover for me for a bit? I gotta answer some questions about yesterday. Cheers mate.
Another LIFT OPERATOR nods and takes SUZY HANSEN'S place. SUZY HANSEN leads the agents over to the break area.
JAREAU
Suzy - thanks for talking to us. We have some questions about the woman who went out with Ravi, Matt, and Vince yesterday morning. We understand that you may have seen a woman talking on her cell.phone on the hallway the night before they went skiing? Do you remember?
SUZY HANSEN- LIFT OPERATOR (WITH ANGRY TEARS)
Oh yeah. slag.
JUREAU
Why do you call her that?
SUZY HANSEN- LIFT OPERATOR
All did, din't we. She was all over the guys, yeah? And from what I heard it wasn't just our lads she had on a leash.
JAREAU
Oh? Why what did you hear?
SUZY HANSEN- LIFT OPERATOR
I was behind her for a bit, yeah? She was all like "Baby, this and Real Man that." I still can't believe our guys bought what she was selling.
JAREAU
This is very important. Can you remember anything specific? Did she say name?
SUZY HANSEN- LIFT OPERATOR
No...no...name...but...um.. I think... she said something like "Baby, where would I be if you hadn't found me?" then she listened for a minute and then... more proper tosh yeah? She said..."Do you know what would be even hotter? If this time it was even bigger! Oh but I'm sure you've already thought of that - a real man like you?" Can you believe it - who would ever be so stupid as to... I was so pissed I...I...I headed off. I should've...
ALVEZ
No - we've caught a lot of criminals like this woman and it is extremely unlikely you could have done anything to change what happened.
JAREAU
But what you've told us today is likely to help us stop her. So thank you very very much. Are you going to be ok?
SUZY HANSEN- LIFT OPERATOR
Yeah. I just...I just...I gotta go back to the lift.
CUT TO
INT. BAU GARCIA'S OFFICE
GARCIA is working on one of the many searches she's working on for the team - she is muttering to herself as she feels like she's not making any progress. Suddenly there is a notification on her screen - which prompts her to open a message from the lab and her face shows her surprise. She dials PRENTISS.
FOR CALL - CUT BETWEEN BAU GARCIA'S OFFICE AVALANCHE CENTER
GARCIA (ON PHONE)
Hey Boss.
PRENTISS (ON PHONE)
Garcia? You do not sound your usual cheerful self...
GARCIA (ON PHONE)
Too many leads not enough time. We just got the report from the lab and they've determined what was in the straws and it wasn't sperm it was three seperate substances typically used either for In vitro fertilization or when women either donate or freeze their eggs. Some of the straws had follitropin - a pharmaceutical preparation of the Follicle stimulating hormone used to induce what is called "superovulation", cetrorelix which apparently is a GnRH antagonist - used to prevent ovulation, and human chorionic gonadotrophinor the famous hCG which pregnacy test check for when gals pee on a stick - which matures the eggs before they are harvested. The lab says that the labels and the distribution of the substances in the staws seem to be random. I'm sending you the report. I'll start checking how someone might get a hold of these things and if you've got to be a doctor or not - because my cross referencing list for this case isn't big enough yet.
PRENTISS (ON PHONE)
That is very weird Garcia - I'll make sure to update the rest of the team. Have you found out anything about our potential hacker? You're the only one really working on that angle right now - and he's the one with the finger on the trigger. So feel free to leave the other things to the side if you need to.
GARCIA (ON PHONE)
Not yet and I'm so stymied - which as you know is not the Penelope Garcia happy place. I even reached out to a contact in the military and we can't even figure out yet how someone would hack one of the targets - let alone where the hacker is working from or who it could be.
PRENTISS (ON PHONE)
Well keep at it. We'll let you know if we figure out anything else that could help ok? Tara's just interviewing one of the survivors from the first avalanche you've linked to our unsub and then we'll get the team together and see what we've got. Alright? Chin up, Pen? You know we all believe in you, right?
GARCIA (ON PHONE)
Yeah. Yeah. Garcia out.
PRENTISS (To Herself)
That is one unhappy technical analyst.
CUT TO
INT.AVALANCHE CENTER - SMALL OFFICE (DAY 1 - EVENING)
LEWIS and JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR) sit face to face in a small office at the Avalanche Centre.
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
Sorry about before. The day Jordie died was the worst day of my life - but somehow it makes it even more ... to know it wasn't an accident. Especially since...since...
LEWIS
Since what? You can tell me.
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
Look I was the one to convince the guys she was alright. I'd met her at a party the night before and she'd told me all this stuff about skiing Whistler and Aspen backcountry. And she had said she was bummed cus her group was held up for a couple days so she wasn't going to be able to do any backcountry touring for a few days...and well she wasn't that special looking or anything - but she made me feel...I don't know like the big guy on the resort...which usually isn't me...I'm kinda the guy who gets friend-zoned you know.
LEWIS
Totally understandable. I am going to ask you more about the party in a few minutes...but first I am hoping you can tell me about the day on the slopes first. How did the day start?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
We were staying at the resort - so we could get out early. We met in the lobby and checked the forecast and finalized our route. We were a bit concerned because the av risk was considerable - but we decided to go anyways but plotted what should have been a pretty conservative route. I remember at one of our decision points - the three of us were leaning towards heading one way with less of a gradient and was pretty free of terrain traps - but Mylai wanted to go another way which would take.us.to a really awesome slope we usually adored but thought might be better to avoid that day. She'd been pretty distant all day - she had told me in the morning she wanted to play things cool so the other guys wouldn't be uncomfortable - I found out after she'd said the same thing to Smitty. I bet Jordie was told the same type of thing too. Suddenly though she's shooting me these bedroom eyes - so like a complete brain-dead moron I sided with her and together we convinced the other two to go the direction she wanted. Then the second she got her way - it was like I was noone again. I stopped paying attention to the mountain the way I should've.
LEWIS
So what happened when the avalanche was triggered? Where were you?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
More dumb shit. So we had to cross this avalanche path and we really should have gone to the top of the ridge - but at the decision point Mylai started flirting with all of us again and suddenly she slapped Jordie, then Vince, the. me on the shoulder and shouted "tag you're it" and then took off like a shot. Jordie started chasing her without thinking and Smitty started off too. I would have probably been first out of the blocks but my pack was at my feet. Anyway it was then that we heard the bang and the snow started to move above Jordie - and Vince and I backed up and called out the warning but it was too late.
LEWIS
Ok now this part is really important...I'm going to ask you to close your eyes for me. This will help you remember extra details. Ok. Trust me ok? That's perfect. Now I want you to go back to the moment just before the snow started to move. What do you see in front of you?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
Jordie is ripping it through the snow after Mylai and Smitty is maybe 20 meters behind him.
LEWIS
And what is Mylai doing is she looking back?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
No. She's jetting - facing forward. Then when she makes it to the far side of the slide path she stops hard and turns back. Oh wait she raised her arm and threw something and then she just stands there watching - she's cold. When the snow starts to move she says something - but I can't hear it.
LEWIS
Justin - can you hear her or see what words her lips are forming?
JUSTIN FITZWILLIAM (SURVIVOR)
"Still not good enough." And then she turned and left Smitty and me to do the rescue on our own. "Still not good enough". Why would she say that?
CUT TO:
INT. MANAGER'S OFFICE - SKI RESORT AJACENT TO THE SECOND AVALANCHE ATTACK (DAY 1 EVENING)
ROSSI and SIMMONS sit across from the assistant manager of the resort who they've been questioning for awhile.
ROSSI
So you're saying that the woman who was with the two men - was staying here with another man?
ASSISTANT MANAGER
Yes - as I was saying. Our records show that Talia Hook checked in with her husband Paul. Two days before the avalanche. They checked out the morning of. We have a credit card receipt and everything.
SIMMONS
Do you have anyone we could talk to who met him? We'd like to see if we could get a sketch and find out anything more about him.
ASSISTANT MANAGER
Yes. Me. I checked them in and out and I have an excellent memory.
CUT TO:
INT. GLOOMY OFFICE OF THE HACKER
We see HACKER MAN is talking on a headset - we only see him in the silouette of a high tech computer screen. On the screen there is a map with many flashing dots matching those that were on the WOMAN UNSUB'S map.
HACKER MAN (ON PHONE)
That's my good girl - I'm glad you found some losers for our trial tomorrow - I think the leaside of slope we were discussing would be perfect. One more successful trial and your little plan will be done and then we can shift to the big game. I've found the perfect deep persistent slab for our purposes - you're going to be so happy you met me so that you could be part of a real plan - that town will not know what hit it - well they will but only until everyone aphyxiates under all of that glorious white stuff - does that make you hot baby? Yeah? Tell me how hot.
CUT TO:
INT. HOTEL ROOM OF SKI RESORT NEAREST THIRD AVALANCHE ATTACK (DAY 1 LATE EVENING)
ALVEZ is sitting on the hotel room - holding his tablet in front of him - video chatting with GARCIA who is in her office.
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Penelope. We're all going to swap information in half an hour - you should take a break until then - you must be exhausted. You know when we pull together the profile it usually gives you another couple targets for your virtual digging.
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Luke I know - I just haven't felt this overwhelmed on a case for awhile. It's like it should be so easy - we know what she looks like - where she's been - what they doing - and nothing. I'm cross referencing the names of all women who are currently active in the military or have left in the last five years with lists of people with mountain knowledge and zilch! The credit cards used are dead ends - there is nothing probative on the cctv camera footage I've found - pretty much anyone can get their hands on the chemicals in the straws - they hand them out to woman to take at home for heavens sake when doing IVF or banking eggs - the straws themselves are easy to order. And I still cannot figure out how they're hacking the missiles or the targets to trigger the avalanches! But enough about my case related frustrations...how are you doing?
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Honnestly, Chica? I'm exhausted. I'm looking forward to the team tee-up being over so I can crash for a few hours...
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Oh I should let you go so you can rest!
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Nah - if I fall asleep I'll be useless at the briefing - but I can let you go if you want to rest...but I have a sneaky suspicion that if I let you go - you'll just go back to banging your head against a virual wall, Chica. So how about this - how about I flirt shamelessly with my gorgeous girl for the next 20 minutes - here I'm setting a timer - and then we'll get ready to meet up with the rest of the team?
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Hmmm well flirting with you your handsome self is definately in my mission statement - so bring it on Alvez show me what you've got.
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Game on - Ms Garcia...can I just say that it doesn't matter how cold it gets outside, whenever I think about you, I get hot.
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Lame! Good thing I love lame because you make me feel like a snowflake when you're around. One touch and I melt.
FADE OUT SLOWLY TO BLACK AS THEY CONTINUE TO FLIRT
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Terrible! Oh Penelope - did anyone ever tell you if you were a tree, you'd be an evergreen, because I bet you look this good year-round?
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
No!!! Luke...seriously though...I'm really worried that they are going to ask you to leave the ski resort...
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Why?
GARCIA (ON VIDEO CHAT)
Cus you're so hot - you're melting all the snow!
ALVEZ (ON VIDEO CHAT)
You didn't! This means war Penny!
