At a Renaissance fair in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, a squad of CW agents looked for the variant. Their black uniforms clashed with the participants. "Hey, you guys aren't dressed right," a blond woman wearing appropriate attire remarked.
The CW squad ignored her and went into a tent. "The variant is near," the squad leader said using her armband sensor.
"Ma'am, don't you think entering this dark enclosed space might be a trap?" one squad member asked her.
"No shit," a feminine voice said as Supergirl emerged from the darkness.
"We got energy staffs. Use them!" the squad leader said to her men.
Before any of them could get a hit, Supergirl punched them all down within a split second. "What is this shit?" one agent asked of Supergirl.
"Just a little fun," she smirked at him.
The last agent tried to get a hit on Supergirl only to get blasted through the chest with heat vision. Supergirl stripped the squad leader of her grenades and her transportation device. In a flash, she became dressed as a CW agent, opened an orange portal, and then entered the CW building.
CW
At the CW, Kara was now in civilian work clothes at a desk watching power-point slides and videos on the CW. "How's it going?" Mobius asked conversationally.
"All things considered, not too bad," Kara said dryly.
"Put this on. We got a mission," Mobius said giving her a jacket. "Put it on," he encouraged her.
Kara put on the CW logo jacket and went with Mobius to talk with B-15 and her squad. "C-20 and her squad went dark shortly after entering a Renaissance fair. All signs point to an ambush. We know it's Supergirl. We just don't know which Supergirl it is or from what universe."
"Here's the deal. When we get out there, we're not just looking for a time criminal, we're looking for a Supergirl, a variation of this girl," Mobius pointed at Kara for the benefit of the new squad. "By now, you should be familiar with her. The CW has deleted this variant more than any other and no two are alike. They have slight differences in appearances and power level. Their powers are flight, super-strength, super-speed, heat vision, frost breath, sonic screams, instant regeneration, etc, etc, etc. Basically, her power is she has lots of powers," Mobius explained. "And even illusion projection."
"Wait, that's not something I can do," Kara said confused.
"Oh, well, you could if we ever allowed you to. It was in Superman II," Mobius told her. "Suffice to say, the variant we're after has every power that has ever been conceived in comics, movies, and TV shows. My personal favorite is the power where a Kryptonian rips off their crest seal and throws it at someone as a distraction. It's a real WTF moment," Mobius said amused.
Kara looked distressed at this conversation and looked like she was about to have a panic attack. "Okay, look, take a deep breath. It's going to be okay," Mobius said to her. He then turned back to the others. "We're going to break into two teams. Kara is coming with me."
"Where is it we're going?" a squad member asked.
"Oshkosh, Wisconsin," Mobius said grimly.
"Why the fuck would anyone want to go to Wisconsin?" B-15 asked.
"We'll ask her that when we capture her. Let's move," Mobius said as he opened an orange portal.
Oshkosh Wisconsin
The CW squad entered the Renaissance fair and looked around. As they walked about earning stares from everyone, Mobius casually conversed with Kara. "Did you watch the training videos?"
"Everyone," Kara said honestly.
"Does it remind you of when you had to watch training videos for Catco right after Cat Grant hired you?" Mobius asked knowingly.
"I realize now what I am," Kara said somberly.
"Well, okay then," Mobius smiled. "So, you realize that this variant wasn't created by us but by fanfiction. There are thousands of different variations of your character unsanctioned on the Internet with powers that are beyond OP. A lot of these variations are harmless Mary Sue characters much like you are. But occasionally, you have a deranged mother-fucker that writes you to be a literal god that is lethal-as-fuck."
They entered the tent and Kara covered her mouth in shock as she saw several dead bodies on the grass. "This one has been strip-searched," one agent said.
"Impossible for the variant to get the drop on C-20," B-15 doubted.
"I think you underestimate Kryptonians," Kara said helpfully.
"Fan out and search the area," B-15 barked at her men.
"What if she's already at the CW? Your executives are in danger," Kara said seriously.
"If she did that, she would lose her powers just as you have," Mobius downplayed. "Alright, let's get out of here before she comes back and slaughters us, too."
CW
Mobius and Kara walked down the halls and conversed on the problem at hand. "I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do to help you," Kara said honestly.
"You're here to help us catch the superior version of yourself," Mobius told her.
"I don't think superior is the right word. Why not just...different?" Kara said.
"No, she's superior in all of her powers, her training, her intellect, and her ability to scheme than you. She was written to be the perfect weapon," Mobius said. "Now, Kara, I see a scared little girl that just realized her whole world is a fantasy about to end, and I kind of feel bad for you. I also want to catch this variant. So, help me...help you."
"You got it," Kara nodded.
"Great," Mobius smiled as the two entered an elevator.
The two exited the elevator and ended up in a computer lab. "I need you to go through thousands of fanfiction stories about you to find which story correlates to our variant. We need to know how this character ticks," Mobius said. "Maybe there is something we missed. All of our jobs depend on you helping us."
Kara got on the computer and began to read the short stories at first and then the longer ones. She became quickly disgusted by most of these stories as they involved her being in a lesbian relationship with Lena. "We're just...friends," she said stunned. Then, she delved into even weirder slash fiction of her being in a relationship with Eliza, Alex, and Cat. "Who are these people?" Kara wondered.
A mortified Kara entered the cafeteria and found Mobius eating his lunch. "So, you read them all?" Mobius doubted.
"I read enough," Kara said still shell-shocked.
"I felt the same way when I got your case. Of course, for a straight man, reading lesbian slash fiction is really hawt," Mobius said.
"I don't see how anyone could have interpreted my friendship with Lena as anything but just that," Kara said confused.
"Well, you see, we've been queer-baiting our audience for years. Remember when you said you were willing to date Lucy Lane?" Mobius brought up.
"I was just joking," Kara recalled.
"Yeah, well, that was us throwing a bone to the LGBT community. In Season 5, we had you tearfully confess your identity to Lena, we had you carrying her in your arms, and we had you stare at each other for much longer than necessary," Mobius smiled. "The director, the actors, the producers, and the scriptwriters are all in on it."
"But, I'm destined to be with Mon-El," Kara said confused.
"Well, that's the thing with queer-baiting is that you never actually deliver the goods. You'll never kiss or have a relationship with Lena on screen. We just want young lesbian fans to think it will happen so they keep watching. Unfortunately, we may have lost 90% of our audience in the process. Look, it seemed reasonable at the time. We wanted our cake and eat it, too. We wanted both the LGBT and the DC community to love us and we ended up just pissing them both off," Mobius said regretfully.
"I think queer baiting is another form of homophobia," Kara said offended.
"I'll be damned," Mobius realized.
"If it makes the fans happy, I'll...be gay," Kara offered herself.
"I appreciate your sacrifice...but it's not really up to you," Mobius said bluntly. "These lesbian fans are just going to have to bite the bullet. Besides, there's Batwoman. Now, when we make Batwoman bisexual and in a relationship with a man, heads will explode," he said dramatically.
"Why do you do the things that you do?" Kara asked curiously.
"I'm just a script doctor. I just take CW scripts and try to make them less shitty within the budget that I'm given. I wanted to tell an awesome story for you but it just didn't work out," Mobius admitted. "And for that, I'm truly sorry."
"I'm sorry, too," Kara said sadly.
"While you're here, you're a real person. Do you want something to eat? How about some potstickers and crullers?" Mobius suggested.
"Wait, do I like these things because of the writers or...," Kara wondered.
"You like them because I like them. That was my contribution to the script. They're delicious," Mobius said and then went to get some. Mobius came back with some potstickers and crullers.
"So, I think our variant is going to be hiding in my universe during apocalyptic disasters," Kara said. "That way, she doesn't disturb the narrative you've written. Like, she could go to Krypton before it explodes and do whatever she wants. No matter what she does, it won't change the timeline."
"You're suggesting we go to Krypton before it explodes?" Mobius asked skeptically.
"It doesn't have to be Krypton. It could be any apocalypse in the Arrowverse," Kara said. "It could be a meteor, a supernova, a volcano."
"Not bad," Mobius said impressed.
"So, take me there and I'll show you," Kara volunteered.
"Alright, Krypton, it is," Mobius said.
Krypton
Mobius and Kara arrived on Krypton right before it exploded. Kara eyed her home planet in wonder. For the first time, she was truly experiencing her world for herself. "Now, look, I'm going to look at this pad to see if there is any variance energy," Mobius began as Kara simply stared at Kryptonians walking about doing their business. "You paying attention?"
"Yeah," Kara said looking around.
"Look, if we're wrong, we have to be careful we don't create a new branch. We're not meant to be here, okay. Anything we do could impact the history of the show. So, I need you to start making Kryptonian bird noises to mask our presence."
"You're messing with me," Kara realized.
"What? No," Mobius denied.
Kara looked around and saw all the men, women, and children about to die. "Look, Kara, they're not real," Mobius said seeing her expression.
"People of Krypton! The planet is about to explode! Find a ship, leave the planet! It's your only hope!" she shouted at them in English.
"Oh, shit. The executives are going to have my ass for this," Mobius realized.
"My name is Kara Zor-El, daughter of Zor-El and Alura. Listen to me!" she pleaded with them.
"Why is she speaking to them in English?" Mobius wondered.
"I'm from the future. You can trust me!" Kara said to them.
The planet then started erupting all of its volcanos at once as the crust began to destabilize. Kryptonians fled in terror as lava plumes erupted all over the place. Kara watched in shock as the planet was being destroyed in real-time before her. "Well, that's interesting. No variant branch detected," Mobius said calmly. "It's like we were never here."
Kara sobbed freely as her planet was being destroyed before her. The city was already destroyed by the powerful earthquake tremors. Mobius portalled himself and Kara away before the planet exploded.
CW
At the office, Mobius went back to work while Kara was beside herself having just witnessed the destruction of her people. "So, she's ambushing our men and hiding out in natural disasters. It's a start," Mobius said pleased.
After Mobius reported his findings, he sat down with a grief-stricken Kara. "You know what's really cool? Jet skis. Have you ever rode one? Of course, you haven't. We didn't write in the script. One of my biggest regrets is that we didn't have you do cool stuff like horseback riding, SCUBA diving, surfing, sky diving, racing cars, or explore alien planets. We just never had the budget or time for it."
"Jet skiing?" Kara asked tearfully.
"It reminds me of what I'm fighting for. When this is all over, I'm going to get a bonus and I'm going to get me one," Mobius revealed.
"Mobius, what do you believe?" Kara asked.
"I don't get hung up on belief. I just accept things the way they are," Mobius said.
"You don't think to question the CW executives on some of this?" Kara asked.
"If I thought too hard about what I do here, I'd quit. All of this is ridiculous. Nothing makes any sense. I tried to make sense of it and I failed. I'm sorry. I'm just lucky I still have a job in the entertainment industry," Mobius said honestly.
"So, you've given up on me and my friends," Kara realized.
Mobius sighed. "The ship has sailed on your series, unfortunately."
"What if it's the same with you? What if free will doesn't exist for you and your life is someone else's script?" Kara asked philosophically.
"Then, we're fucked. I try not to think about it. If you ever go back to your show, you should also not think too hard about it either. The ending hasn't been written yet. The writers are toiling away working on the epilogue. There's still room for excitement and surprise in your life," Mobius said.
"So, what's next?" Kara asked.
"Well, we find every apocalypse in the Arrowverse and visit each and every one of them," Mobius said simply.
London, England
Mobius, Kara, B-15, and a CW squad portalled to London, England during a zombie apocalypse on the Legends of Tomorrow show. Upon arriving, it was dark and rainy. The group immediately noticed a large shopping mall in front of them. "We set up a base of operations there," B-15 said to her men.
Upon entering the shopping mall, Kara instantly made herself dry with her hair sticking up for a few seconds. "What was that?" B-15 question.
"Just trying to stay dry. I don't remember the last time I've been wet," Kara said honestly.
"Sweep the mall for any zombies," B-15 ordered her men.
"Kara and I will check out the greenhouse. We'll check back here when we're done," Mobius said.
"No, she stays with me," B-15 insisted.
"She's under my supervision," Mobius insisted.
"This is my field-op, Mobius. If she's not a threat, this won't be a problem," B-15 said.
"Of course, she's a threat. That's why I want her with me," Mobius argued.
"You're more than welcome to go back to the CW and make your case with the executives," B-15 rolled her eyes.
"We're here. We're not going back," Mobius told her off.
"It's fine. I don't want to be a problem," Kara said submissively. "I understand I have to earn your trust so I will."
"Kara, this is bullshit," Mobius protested.
"It's fine," Kara assured him.
B-15 and Kara walked about the mall and found a blond woman in a Supergirl uniform staring back at them. "Could this be you?" B-15 asked holding her staff out.
"I think it is," Kara said spooked.
Before B-15 could even react, Supergirl punched her to the floor within a split second knocking her out. She then sized Kara up. "Is she dead?" Kara asked shocked and appalled.
"See for yourself. She'll be fine," Supergirl said unconcernedly. "So, you're the fool the CW brought in to hunt me down," Supergirl said unimpressed.
"How nice to meet you," Kara said backing away.
"Do you really think putting distance between us will make a difference?" Supergirl asked standing still. "Why are you working for the CW?"
"In a way, they're working for me," Kara said brightly.
"You really believe that, don't you?" Supergirl mocked.
A random zombie interrupted their chat and went straight for Supergirl. She incinerated the zombie on the spot with her heat vision. "You going to call your friends for help?" Supergirl taunted.
"I think we might have things in common. We could work together. If my show keeps going, fanfiction also keeps going. We have a symbiotic relationship," Kara said reasonably.
"Your show, that garbage fire of a TV show needs to be put out of its misery. After your show has become a dim memory, fanfiction will continue forever. I don't need you to continue the story," Supergirl said. "So, the answer is no."
"What do you want?" Kara asked.
"It doesn't matter. You're too late," Supergirl said dismissively as she walked away.
"Look, I found you. I think that counts for something," Kara said offended walking after her. She then noticed a series of bombs on the shelves. "You've lured us here to blow us up?" she asked.
Supergirl suddenly kicked Kara to the floor. The kick was devastating. Kara had never felt such power before in her life. "You really do love to hear yourself talk," Supergirl mocked.
"You're not the first person to say that," Kara grimaced.
Supergirl took hold of her and slammed her to the floor. Kara got back up and tried to defend herself. Supergirl easily punched her to the chest and face with superior martial arts and speed. Kara was punched to the floor stunned. Supergirl placed Kara in a headlock. "You just don't have the budget to fend me off," Supergirl taunted.
Supergirl tossed Kara into a shopping display like a ragdoll. "What is it that you want?" Kara cried out.
"This isn't about you," Supergirl told her.
"I feel pretty involved," Kara doubted.
"Some people can't be reasoned with or bargained with. Some people...just want to see the world burn," Supergirl said with an insane expression.
Mobius and the rest of the squad went into the back and were immediately ambushed by zombies. "Oh, shit!" Mobius realized as the zombies swarmed them. The timer on the bombs counted down to zero. Suddenly, the bombs were delivered to various locations and times in the Arroverse. A bomb went off in the DEO in National City, Argo City, STAR Labs in Central City, the Bat Cave in Gotham, Oliver's nightclub, and the Legend Waverider killing nearly all of the Arrowverse heroes in an instant.
"Holy shit," CW analysts realized as the sacred timeline got fucked sideways.
In the shopping mall, Supergirl opened an orange portal. "I just killed all of your friends, your cousin, and your sister. I've ended your series before it could even begin. So, what are you going to do about it, huh? You going to follow me or remain on the CW's leash?" Supergirl asked and then exited.
Kara gave a stunned expression on her face as she couldn't believe what she had just been told. "Kara, wait!" Mobius said as he arrived on the scene. Kara eyed him wondering if she could really trust him. Even if she did, he clearly didn't give a shit about her life or future. Kara decided to take a chance and went through the portal.
"Well...shit," Mobius realized as the portal closed.
