"Dad gave me this letter earlier." Beth said handing the paper over in bed to Rip.

"What's it about?"

"Read it. Says we have to take Katie to the hospital for a review of her arm." Beth told him.

"Ok. Well everything is fine so we don't need to go." Rip said.

"I don't think it works like that. It says it's tomorrow." Beth said.

"All right. I'll see if I can get a few hours off."

"Thank you baby." Beth said feeling more comfortable going back to the hospital if Rip was with her.

The next morning Rip went to work whilst Beth had a sleep in, letting Katie watch a tv show on her phone on the bed. They tried to not let Katie watch too much tv but sometimes it was just easier.

"Katie." Beth started. "Hey, look at me. Today we have to go to the hospital so they can look at your arm again."

Katie looked skeptical at the mention of the hospital. She shook her arm around. "It's ok Mama, we don't have to go."

Beth smiled, "No baby, we do. Daddy is going to come too."

They picked Rip up from the Lodge and drove in to the hospital together. They were told to wait in a large waiting room full of other families and kids. Kids were running around and toddlers were crying. The three sat in the corner of the room and waited for Katie's name to be called.

"Do you want to play with the other kids?" Rip asked pointing out the play area.

Katie shook her head, eyes darting around looking at everyone. Beth stroked her hair, noticing some anxiety in her. She pulled out her phone and opened an app that Monica had showed her that had children's picture books on it.

Rip picked Katie up on to his lap as the three flicked the screen pages until Katie's name was called.

"Katie Dutton-Wheeler?" The nurse called.

Beth clicked her phone off as Rip stood putting Katie on the ground. The nurse waved them over, Katie holding a hand of her parents each.

"Hi there, my name is Sandra. If you could just take a seat in this room the doctor will be in shortly."

Beth smiled and sat down in the chair. The walls were full of colourful cartoon stickers that had caught Katie's eye. Rip stayed standing letting Katie have the other chair to herself as she swung her legs back and forth.

"Can we go yet?" Katie asked quietly. "It smells bad."

"Soon baby, we just need to see the doctor first." Beth told her. Rip squeezed her shoulder knowing she was sick of waiting too.

A young red headed man walked in wearing a white lab coat, a face full of freckles and a cheery smile on his face. "Sorry to keep you waiting! I'm Sam one of the doctors."

Katie looked shocked at his enthusiasm, sitting further back in the chair.

"I'm just here to check over your arm, I'll then discuss with my senior doctor and you should be free to go. Any concerns?" He asked looking at Beth and Rip.

"None. She had the cast removed and has been fine since." Beth answered.

"Great! Can I have a look Katie?" Sam asked and Katie showed him both her arms at once. He put her through some different exercises and tests.

"They both look very strong to me! I'll just get our senior doctor to have a look." Sam said standing up and leaving the room.

Beth looked at Rip. "Is it ok, why do we even need another doctor?"

"I'm sure it's fine, he's just doing his job."

A few minutes later, a second doctor, tall with brown hair walked in. He looked familiar to Beth and Rip but it was Katie who recognised him first.

"No. Go away." She said, Beth looked at her before looking at the doctor again. The doctor had a tinge of redness in his face before glancing at Rip.

"No. Get him out." Beth said, pulling Katie on to her lap. "We don't want this man near our family."

Sam looked surprised and stammered out a response before leaving the room, he came back shortly with an elderly doctor with greying hair.

"Ah hello, I believe there is an issue."

"Yes, we don't want this man near our child. He has traumatised her once and that's enough." Beth said sternly.

"Ok. I understand. James if you could leave the room." The elderly man said. Rip bristled at the mentioning of the name James realising who he was.

The elderly man discussed Katie's arm with Sam before turning back to them.

"Everything seems to be in good order. I must say though firstly, I am sorry you had a bad experience with one of our doctors. If you wish to discuss or file a formal complaint please let one of our nurses know." He then stood up and took his leave followed by Sam.

Beth kept Katie on her hip and held Rip's hand as they walked to the car.

"That was a waste of fucking time." Rip said getting in to the drivers seat as Beth put Katie in the car.

Rip kept checking on Katie in the rear view mirror on the drive, she never took her eyes away from the window watching the world pass them by. He decided to make one unplanned pit stop on their way home before work and life would resume.

He pulled off the highway in to town.

"Rip. I do love you but where the fuck are we going?" Beth said still frustrated at the day.

He pulled in to a small dirt carpark in front of a playground. The playground was a old tin slide, rusty see-saw and swing set.

Rip got out and opened the door getting Katie out as Beth got out of the car.

"Just walk with me over here first and then you can sit and play." Rip said.

The three walked along the rows of graves until Rip stopped at one.

He crouched down and wiped it clean.

"Your mom." Beth said.

"This is my Mom, Katie. She died a long time ago." Rip explained.

"But why?"

"My Dad wasn't a good man. I thought you'd like to meet her."

Katie sat on Rip's knee where he was crouched and touched the grave stone.

"Hello. I'm Katie. My Daddy is really fun, not when I'm in trouble though." Beth chuckled behind them both and Rip kissed Katie's head.

"Daddy is she my grandma?"

"She would have loved that." Rip said. Beth watched on before noticing an elderly man approaching them.

"Hello again Rip." The man said.

"Terry. Good to see you. This is Beth and our girl Katie." Rip said before turning to Beth, "Why don't you both go to the park. Terry and I have some catching up to do."

Beth sensed a history between the pair and directed Katie back to the park through the rows of gravestones.

Katie begged Beth to push the swings higher and higher until Rip rejoined them.

"Ready when you both are." Rip said. Beth stopped the swing, letting Katie jump off before heading to the car.

"What's going on?" Beth asked in the passenger seat.

"Nothing to worry about, just catching up with Terry." Rip said brushing it off.

"We don't get to have secrets Rip."

"I'm not trying to keep anything from you Beth."

Beth ignored him and turned back to looking out the window.

They dropped Katie at the lodge for the afternoon so they could spend some time together.

"I was thinking we could have the wedding here?" Rip started the conversation. Beth looked over surprised. They hadn't really planned much of their wedding with so much happening in their family.

"When?"

"Maybe in a month? Once we tell everyone then we just have to get some food I guess?" Rip replied.

"May as well have a big dinner to tell everyone." Beth told him.
