Beth felt the bed, it had gone cold where Katie would have been lying.

Rip paced around the room checking any spots he though she could have been hiding.

"I'll check upstairs you check down." Rip told her.

Beth ran down the stairs, dread washing over her. She had a feeling that something was wrong. She could hear Rip yelling Katie's name as he moved through all the bedrooms.

"She's not here." He said from the top of the stairs. Beth shook her head.

"I can't find her."

"We'll find her Beth." Rip said rubbing her arm. The couple went outside, calling her name, checking around the lodge.

"What's going on?" Kayce asked coming out of the barn.

"Katie's gone." Beth told him.

"She probably got up for a drink or to find you." Kayce said.

"Kayce, the bed is cold and she's not anywhere in the house." Beth said starting to get angry.

"All right. I'll get a torch." Kayce came back with multiple torches and the rest of the cowboys. Everyone split up around the ranch looking for the little girl.

"What's going on Beth?" John asked.

"She's gone. Her bed was cold and we can't find her."

"We'll find her honey." John said going off in another direction.

The sun had started to rise as they walked in a line along the field looking for any sign.

"Mama, bike tracks." Tate pointed out to Monica.

"Kayce!" She yelled, he ran over with Rip and John.

"We don't have bikes like that." Rip said, his insides going icy. Beth watched from a distance.

"Did any of you ride out here on any bike?" John yelled.

The cowboys shook their head and Rip took off running, Beth behind him. He followed the track to where it ended when he felt physically ill.

He stopped, Beth behind him. He knelt down and picked up a pair of little ballet flats and the bow from her dress. He turned to Beth with them in his hand and took a couple of steps towards her. When she realised what he was holding she fell in to his chest hitting it hard.

"Where the fuck is she Rip."

"I don't know but I'll find her." He held her arms and tried to wipe a stray tear.

Monica watched on pulling Tate in close. Kayce stood behind his family and closed his eyes. The cowboys looked at each other watching on as Beth broke. John surprised them all as he turned and went back to the lodge.

"Come on." Kayce said to Monica and Tate, leading them back in the direction of the house away from Rio and Beth. The cowboys lingered a bit longer before turning and heading back themselves.

"Beth, I promise you that I will find her."

"I'm going with you."

Rip and Beth entered the study where John was standing with Kayce, a whisky in hand.

"It's the Becks, Beth." John told her.

"Fucking bastards."

Rip lent against the wall and took his hat off before throwing it. "Fuck!"

John put his whisky down. "Beth give us the room."

"Fuck off. They've got my kid." Beth said taking a seat.

"Katie's got to come home to someone." John said.

"She does, but she is going to need me there when we get her back."

John took a deep breath and rubbed his hands together before looking at the three of them. "This is going to be the end of us. But we are doing it anyway."

"Kayce, call the sheriffs office and get Donnie here. Tell him just enough about what's happened." John told him. Donnie arrived twenty minutes later, John and Beth met him at his truck.

"They've got me over a barrel John. I don't know what I can do." Donnie said.

"You choose a side Donnie. They've got my damn granddaughter."

"I don't know how we can hide what you're asking John."

"You're going to have to trust me." John said.

"I'm sorry Beth -" Donnie started.

"Tell me what security they have." Beth said.

"Off duty officers. Two of them. They're my cousins."

John chuckled. "They're off duty from both places tonight. Make sure of that."

Beth walked away. "If you're gonna do this, do it right. Get a warrant." Donnie said watching her and John leave.

Kayce organised a live stock agency warrant for the Beck's. It was decided that Kayce would be the one to go there expecting that Rip and Beth would both lose it if they did.

He drove out to their ranch, waved the warrant at the officers before they left telling him it was just the one brother, Teal, inside.

Kayce crept through the house checking each corner for signs of Katie. The sound of paper rustling caught his ear down the hallway. He followed the sound and found Teal on the toilet, pants around his ankles, newspaper in hand.

Kayce fired the gun wounding Teal before he could react.

"Where's my niece? Where is she?"

"I don't know." Teal said gasping

Kayce shot him again.

"I can do this all day before you die."

"Montana Free Militia. Base of the Crazies. Don't leave me here to die. Not on the toilet."

"You really thought we wouldn't fight back."

"No one ever fights back."

"Until now." Kayce said raising the gun a final time before firing. Kayce fired the gun more to make it look like self defence. He phoned John updating him back at the ranch.

"What did he say?" Beth asked sitting up when John came inside.

"We know where she is."

Rip got up and followed John back in to the study.

"The free militia have her." Rips eyes widened at that but he said nothing. The pair sat and made a plan for getting Katie back.

"I will see you tonight." Rip said leaving. He met Beth in the lounge room, whispered in her ear and the pair took their leave for their own home passing Mo at the from of the lodge.

"I've been sent by Thomas. I believe you need my help." Rip nodded pointing to house letting him know John was inside.

John got everyone ready in the late afternoon heat before Beth and Rip met everyone.

"Beth, I'm asking you to consider this." John started.

"I'm going Dad."

Everyone got in to their cars, Ryan stopped Rip.

"Rip, let me draw the fire. You can't do it yourself, Beth can't, neither can John or Kayce. Let it be me."

Rip looked at him considering his words. "Thanks Ryan." He clapped him on the shoulder.

The full moon rose high in the sky as they all got prepared, covering their faces to camouflage where possible. Ryan sat on his horse with his gun waiting as Mo drew protection symbols on the horses body, explaining as he did.

Beth stood with Rip, waiting. "Stay here. I'll get here and bring her straight to you."

She looked him in the eye saying nothing for a moment. "Ok. Make sure you bring her home Rip. I can't do it without both of you."

"I promise."

Everyone got in to position. "I am sorry this has happened today of all days." John said to them both before leaving to cover Ryan on his horse.

The militia started firing and the Yellowstone men fired back. John, Kayce, Lloyd, Mo and Rip stormed the house splitting up.

Rip entered a room to find a man sitting cross legged on the floor, he had his gun raised at him.

"Where is my daughter?" The man looked at him. "Do you know where she is?"

"I sure do." The man said before taking his own life.

"No!" Rip yelled.

Movement outside caught John's eye. He exited the nearest door. He yelled at them to stop before he was shot at, missing him. He fired back wounding the person.

John approached the man now lying in the field, everyone now watching on.

"You deserve a lot worse than this Malcolm."

Malcolm groaned before John shot him to stop him from moving further.

"You cocksucker!"

"You tell me where my granddaughter is and I'll get you to a hospital."

Malcolm continued to scream, making John more infuriated. He sat down next to where Malcolm was lying.

"You know, if there is a heaven, this may be your last chance to get in it. You decide Malcolm, probably got thirty minutes left."

Malcolm's breathing became erratic as death neared. John looked up at the stars pointing out planets to him.

"Carter Meads. That's his name."

"I'll get you to a hospital."

"Leave me to be alone. I wish we'd never met."

"Yeah." John chuckled. "I bet you do."

The group drove to Whitefish where Katie supposedly was, Donnie and his officers joining them. This time the sheriffs stormed the house, Rip coming in behind. It was open fire as soon as they entered.

"We've got her." An officer called for Donnie.

"Keep Rip and Beth back." Donnie told everyone but it was too late, Rip was already pushing past and Beth pacing outside.

"Let me get her."

"You don't want to see her like that."

"She's my fucking kid Donnie." Rip got them off him and entered a bathroom where Katie was now screaming.

"Rip, a trauma specialist is on their way." Donnie said from the door.

"No, go away! No, no, no!" Katie screamed.

"Hey, it's Daddy, it's me cowgirl. Come on!" Rip tried to calm her down. She couldn't look at him, turning her face away, her feet were black from dirt. Her flower girl dress ripped and she had multiple cuts and bruises.

Beth froze outside hearing the screams. Her blood felt cold inside her. Kayce came out and tried to tell her to wait a minute.

"Let me go Kayce."

"Please Beth, don't do it to yourself." He told her. She pushed his hands away and ran inside to where they were.

She was still shrieking inside. Rip had his hands on her face trying to get her to recognise him. Beth's hand went to her mouth and she felt her throat close up at what she saw. She turned away before looking back.

"Katie, it's Mama. Come on baby. Looks at us." Beth held Katie's arms by her side to stop her from trying to move away and hit Rip. She looked at them both with big wide frightened eyes.

"You're gonna be ok." Rip told her. Beth pulled Katie in to her arms and chest tightly. Kissing her head. Rip closed his eyes before helping Beth and Katie out of the house.

Ryan was waiting for them in the car, John and Kayce in another. Rip helped Beth in the back with Katie and got in on the other side, pulling both in close to him. They both watched as Katie's eyelids became heavy on the drive home. Rip made eye contact with Ryan in the rear view mirror, nodding his thanks.

Ryan parked the car at the lodge and headed straight for the bunkhouse. Rip helped Beth out of the car.

"Give her here." Rip said to Beth as she handed Katie over.

They stood there for a moment, Katie asleep in Rip's arms and Beth pulled in to his side looking out at the mountains.

"I want to stay at the lodge for a while." Beth said not looking at Rip.

"Ok. You know I'll always protect you both."

"I do. I just don't want to go back to the place they threatened us and her." Beth said. Rip nodded.

"Let's go then."
