Warriors of a Feather, Stick Together

Revali is, as Revali Does

=~;~=

Link woke once more. He was jostled a bit as Revali had apparently decided to move at the exact moment, when he was somewhere between dreams and the waking world. He yawned and stretched, his limbs popping a bit as he did so. Link couldn't help but notice that his hand was still buried in Revali's feathers, except now it was surrounded in their warmth. He stretched his fingers out then back to their original position, feeling the soft down shifting in reaction to his action.

"Enjoying yourself?" Revali suddenly asked. Link flinched as he realized, this meant the other male was awake.

"Why did you bring me here?" Link asked, almost in a whisper.

"Because you were avoiding me," Revali replied, as though the answer were that simple. "And I want the question of 'why' answered. Why are you avoiding me?" Link sighed, he supposed it was fair but he still didn't quite feel ready to answer that question.

"It's not like I was avoiding you on purpose," Link groused, he wanted to pout but decided against it.

"But you were avoiding me," Revali accused. "I want you to be honest with me, why do you think that I hold nothing back?" Link sat up and looked at Revali in his surprise, it was true that the rito never did mince his words and always spoke his opinions. "So how long will you beat around the proverbial bush, before you finally stop avoiding me?" Link sighed, turning away from the other male. He didn't want to talk about this now, in fact he wasn't sure he would ever want to talk about it. "Clearly something is bothering you, you haven't been the same since we defeated Calamity Ganon, since before then even.

"You hardly reacted to my taunts after you got that sword that seals the darkness, you react far less now and to top it all off, you are the one who is depressed. Did this actually start after my little challenge? You seemed upset after I asked you to drink with me, does drinking with me trigger something..?"

"Stop," Link shouted, he didn't want to hear of it. He didn't want to hear that he, of all people, was the one acting strange. He stood and faced Revali then, angry and annoyed that the other wouldn't just let the whole thing go. "If you are so dead set on knowing. I.. I hadn't forgotten any of it, I knew what had happened. I didn't want to.. I didn't want to remember it, so I pretended like it didn't happen. Because of that.. Because of what happened, I rejected Mipha. Plus I found out from future Sidon that he and I were a couple and had a child.. A child! I just.. I can't.. I don't know what to think anymore, you and him turned my whole world upside down and nothing can turn it back to the way it was."

The look of surprise crossed the rito warrior's eyes, it was one he hadn't seen from the other male. Link then turned away, before storming out of the warriors home and down the wooden ramps, he couldn't stay there. He couldn't stay even to hear the other male's cold words, it was all he could imagine happening in his head and he couldn't face. He wouldn't face it, it was just too much to ask in this moment. He was angry and annoyed, but mostly he just hurt so much and was absolutely lost in his confusion. A confusion he had been feeling ever since that incident. No, ever since he had found out that he and another male, had gone to such great length's to be together. Why? Why couldn't he just be normal? Why couldn't he like Mipha, as much as she obviously liked him?

He nearly stumbled when Revali landed in front of him, he clenched his teeth and glared at the rito warrior. Link expected the male to gloat, to say the same mean and hurtful things he always said. But instead of all of that, the other male just pulled him into an embrace, every muscle in his body tensed. His face was practically pushed into the soft, warm down beneath Revali's feathers. For many moments it was just silence, with Link being torn against pushing the other away and just hugging him. And still it seemed the silence just dragged on, it was just too much. In the end it was Revali who released him and almost hurriedly as well.

"Ah Link, there you are," It was Princess Zelda, he cursed inwardly. Honestly could this be any worse? With him on the verge of tears and her showing up, at just the wrong time.

"Hey," Revali said, getting his full attention. "I want to talk with you later, meet me on Vah Medoh's perch this afternoon, do not be late." Then Revali flew off leaving him and the princess alone, he was only slightly relieved the other male was willing to hold off on reaming him then and there. He turned to face Princess Zelda, who was smiling a bit.

"I wonder what he want's to talk to you about," She said, obviously distracted. "You two aren't fighting again are you?" He shook his head, he hadn't told her anything and he wasn't about to start confiding all of his problems to her now. "Oh, maybe he wants to tell you about today in person then. Oh and we will be staying a little longer than I expected, so you should definitely go talk to Revali." She nodded then and headed off on her own, he groaned once she was out of earshot. Why weren't they leaving today? What had happened? Was there an unexpected blizzard or something? Link rubbed his face and marched his way back up to the very top or the ramp way. He then made the treacherous climb, up toward Vah Medoh's perch.

When he reached the top, Revali was already there waiting and possibly a little nervous? He wasn't sure but the other male definitely seemed a bit flustered. He wanted to ask why but Revali instead made his way into Vah Medoh, Link followed a bit uncertainly. It wasn't until they were deep within and well out of hearing and visual range of any of the village's inhabits, that he finally stopped.

"You.. why didn't you just tell me?" Revali finally asked. Link looked away, were they really going to have this conversation? Could he deal with having this conversation now, of all times?

"Tell you.. Tell you, of all the rito in this village, you?" Link asked, as though it were obvious why he didn't say anything. "I didn't even tell the princess, or Mipha and Mipha is basically my best friend, whom I shared everything with until that. I don't even know how I'm supposed to feeling about any of it, let alone know how I am actually feeling about it right now." He watched as Revali looked away from him, then the other male closed his eyes before looking back at Link.

"Still.. After I.. well after my confession, did you not think I would want to at least know that you remembered it?" Revali asked. "That morning when I woke before you, I thought of a hundred ways I should have apologized. I wanted to apologize, for my actions. I acted against my better judgment and went.. And I did things improperly." Link was surprised, Revali was not normally one to apologize for anything. He was rude, crass and hard-headed. Some would even call him proud or pompous but never humble. The rito warrior obviously thought highly of himself, probably rightfully so but it was still annoying at best and insulting at worst.

"You.." Link began, he fully intended to tell the other off but he was interrupted.

"Do I really impress you?" Revali asked. Link felt heat flushing his face, why was his body reacting like this? He gulped but nodded, of course the rito warrior impressed him. He was impressed the very first time he had met Revali, that very first fight was incredible and incredibly close. "Then I will do things properly." Link was surprised and maybe even a little flustered at this, he hoped it wasn't plain as day on his face.

"W-what do you mean?" Link asked.

"You don't know much about Rito culture do you?" Revali asked, he caught a glimpse of amusement in the other male's eyes. He shook his head, he wasn't sure he wanted to hear it but he would at least humor Revali. "We Rito have a bit of a ritual we follow, when selecting a mate. Males go well out of their way to please a female, once the female is impressed with the males effort, the true courtship begins. Males will preform a dance everyday until the female accepts him, it is then and only then that they will mate. As I said, I did things improperly and I will rectify that."

"So wait.. You.. You think of me as a.. a.." He couldn't even believe what he was hearing, let alone believe that Revali really and truly wanted to mate with him.

"Do you dispute this?" Revali challenged. "You told me your self, that Future Sidon even told you that you and he were an item. Who do you think was the one who had the child? I personally cannot see the Prince doing such a thing." Link felt his face heat up at that, neither could he if he was being honest, it wasn't something he had really thought about. "Although, how would that even work with his immense size?"

"Let's not go down that blupee hole," Link mumbled, he caught a glimpse of amusement in the rito warrior's gaze.

"Very well," Revali relented.

"So.. how do.. how do the females show that they accept the male as their mate?" Link asked, a bit embarrassed. He watched Revali's eyes widen at the question, his pupil's dilated as well and then his feather's fluffed a little. He only saw the rito warrior fluff his feather's before training, was this excitement? Revali then did a quick couple of flip's with his tail before turning to look at the door they had come through.

"It is better to see the process," the rito warrior explained. Link was surprised at this, he really wanted to question it but held off. He grunted in surprise when the other male grabbed him and started back out.

"W-wait, right now?" Link asked. "Isn't spying rude?"

"To Hylian's maybe," Revali responded, unconcerned. "To rito it is a very visual display put on for other's as well, we expect to be watched and it is a signal for other males that are competing to back off. It usually results in some fighting around mating season, with the young and less experienced males. But it also can attract another potential mate, of course. Many males will take their turn at trying to court a female, if they all happened to impress the same female."

"That's happened?" Link asked.

"Yes, usually only two but sometimes it's three," Revali explained. "Though in the legends there was once a female Rito so beautiful, that she had accumulated seven suitors. The males had been so enamored they literally fought to please her, one of these fights got out of hand and the beautiful female was lost."

"She died?" Link questioned, sadly.

"She was killed, yes," Revali replied. "It is why we no longer fight for a female but rather take a turn to win her over." It made sense to him, it was a morale story that taught an important lesson to the rito people, in it's telling. Hylians also had these folklore stories, stories that scared children and taught very important lessons they would need to survive. He was jostled out of his thought, as Revali finally stopped once again and sat. Link sat beside him and looked out over the village, he wasn't sure what to look for though. Movement caught his eye and he suddenly saw the whole dancing routine that the Rito did occasionally, in a whole new light. There was a small gathering of Rito, who had stopped to watch the performance.

In the middle of his display the female suddenly joined him, placing her feathered arm to the right of his neck. He had never seen it quite like this, usually the male would dance for a while then back off. Link watched as the two danced together, the dance going on for far longer than before and the intricate switching of arms and how they matched each other's movements. Soon he began to hear a melody as well, those surrounding had joined in a form of chorus while the two danced to the song.

"We are in luck, she accepted him," Revali whispered. The dance finished with her pulling their foreheads together, beaks pointed down. Neither of the dancing Rito had made a sound, the melody had come directly from the onlookers and was now ending. It was then that the onlookers took their leave, going about their daily lives as usual. Link gulped, how was he going to be expected to, no why was he even thinking about it? "There is of course a reason why this takes several days of courting."

"And why is that?" Link decided to ask, but immediately regretted it.

"It takes several days because often the female will go off alone and practice the basic moves of a dance, from the male she likes," Revali answered. He looked over to see the rito warrior was still looking the village over. "That is why their dance looked so flawless." Link frowned a bit at that, that means, he stopped his thoughts there. Why was he even thinking this? Was it because of Future Sidon's words? Or was it because he was seeing a new side to himself? He started to think back, when had he ever thought of women? He didn't even have a crush growing up and he couldn't remember a time when had even thought of a girl, in that kind of way.

"I.. I need some time to think," Link finally answered.

"Very well," Revali replied, his voice sounded a little upset though. Then the Rito left soaring off and leaving him sitting there on the divine beast. He mentally slapped himself, clearly he needed to do a lot more than just think about his own preferences. He would also have to think before saying anything else, he supposed he had plenty of time for that now. He berated himself as he sat there alone, thinking.
