Anzu Mazaki had never been kissed.
At the tender age of 16, Anzu had barely even had a boyfriend. Oh yes, she'd had male friends. She had had people interested in her. But the guy she wanted had never come along.
The guys she wanted were way out of her league. They never looked her way. Anzu had had a brief crush on Kaiba. That's all it was, brief. And that was before she had known what an asshole he was.
Back then, she had known a really cute guy who owned a business that dealt in electronics. He was tall, handsome, and he wasn't an idiot. Sure, he was cold, but he was everything a woman wanted in a man. And before Anzu had become closer to Yugi, she had not even thought about Kaiba being anything less than the perfect man.
But he had flaws. A brother complex. A horrible person, who stopped at nothing to get what he wanted. Even if that meant using the one weakness Yugi had. He threatened to take his life.
Yugi could have never have killed him. At the time, Anzu had no idea that it was really another person, Yami Yugi.
Even before then, Anzu had known he was a cretin. In the first duel between Yugi and Kaiba, when Yugi had still owned the Exodia cards, he had laughed in the face of everything Yugi stood for. And they had all known it was because he was afraid, and deep down, that he was weak.
Seto Kaiba pretended to be strong, but he was not strong.
And Anzu moved on.
And sometimes, she felt guilty because she had been idiotic enough to turn a blind eye to his flaws.
And sometimes, when she felt so horrible, she just had to cheer her friends on. Because the hope she inspired in them gave her hope as well.
And sometimes, she was miserable, because she felt like nobody cared about her.
And sometimes, she wished that things could be okay, just once.
And she watched as Yugi switched between being an incredibly strong person who just oozed self-confidence, to somebody whose intentions were just too good.
And she wished Yugi could always be that self-confident. And Anzu became infatuated with that side of him.

It was a cold winter day. Anzu was shivering, standing outside of the school, waiting for Jou, Honda and Yugi. As she stood there, her things slipped out of her hands and into the snow. Anzu cursed herself, and dug through the snow for her belongings. She retrieved it, whilst mentally angered by her bad luck as the papers were likely ruined.
She decided to just leave, even though she'd been waiting ten minutes, she didn't want to wait any longer for any more bad luck to show up. They'd likely forgotten all about her.
She stood up, and as she did, she got one of those… feelings. Almost like a sixth sense. And it was as if someone was behind her. She turned around… and there was Yugi. She stood still as he approached her, wary of his intentions. When he stood on his tip-toes, she assumed he wanted to talk to her.
But when he brushed his lips against hers, Anzu couldn't help but blush, and a chill went through her. Anzu watched as he walked away, but there was no air of confidence in that stride. Yugi had just stolen her first kiss.
Even later, as she tried to wash the cold feeling away, Anzu had to admit to herself she was glad he had done that. It meant he cared for her. As she lay in her bed that night, she felt warmth as she realized. She was in love, and even if she had liked Seto Kaiba, it had been a part of her life, and there was no reason to feel bad.
She was in love with Yugi, and he felt the same.
And as she fell asleep, she knew everything would be okay.
