A/N: Just for reference. Clary is between 6-7, and the guys are around 10-11.
The sounds of heavy drums and guitars riffs play in the background, as the two boys do their homework. "What did you put down for number fifteen?" Jonathon asks, while blantantly leaning toward Jace's notebook.
"Why ask, if you're just going to copy my answers?" Jace retorts rhetorically, as he moves his notebook away. "Look man, you're going to flunk this week's test if you don't memorize the formula."
Jonathon humphs, throwing his pen down on the desk. He rubs his hands over his face, then takes a calming breath. "Why do I need geometry? Really? What good does it do me if I'm going to be a professional drummer?"
His best friend faces him, lips pressed. "I'm not trying to crush your dream. But you need a plan B." Then smiles slyly, "Maybe even a plan C and D."
Jonathon pushes Jace's shoulder playfully. "Jerk."
With more rigor, Jace cheers him on. "You can do this. Let's go over the formula again."
Just then, they hear footsteps quickly coming in their direction, and their gazes angle towards the door as a small redhead peeks through the ajar door. Excitedly, she runs to Jonathon, and he beams as he lifts her on his lap. Jace tickles her neck, and the two boys enjoy the giggles that erupt from the girl with untamed flaming hair.
"Hi, Jon! Hi, Jay!" Clary shouts too loudly. The boys groan at their respective nicknames, but they let it go due to her adorable nature. "Do you notice anything different?" Clary asks with a wide smile.
Immediately, they see she is missing a tooth. Her first tooth finally came out. Jonathon looks her over seriously. "I don't know, Clare," he hums. Her smile drops, and her brows pucker. "Did you get gum stuck in your hair again?"
She whines and covers her reddening face. "That only happened once!"
Jonathon meets his best friend's gaze, both finding amusement in teasing her. Jace finally gives in, "Clary, why don't you just tell us."
Facing him, she points her index finger at her missing tooth. "I lost my first tooth," she sings. The boys cheer for her, and she gleams under their attention. "Mommy says I have to put it under my pillow tonight. Something about a wierdo giving me money." She shrugs her shoulders uninterested.
Tutting, Jonathon tells her, "The Tooth Fairy isn't a weirdo. She gives you money, and takes the tooth."
"What does a fairy do with the tooth?" her head shuffles between the two boys, whom are at a loss. "What ever she does with it, it's weird." Jumping off her brother's lap, she leaves as abruptly as she came in.
Jace openly laughs, while Jon is stunned. "Only Clare-bear would wonder about something like that," Jonathon mutters.
"She's too cute." Jace turns back to his homework with a smile. "Okay, for question fifteen..."
"I have a better idea," Jon interrupts. Jace's dark blonde brows furrow. "I have a dare for you." Before Jace could roll his eyes, Jon continues. "Come on! We have three days to study, but Clary only loses her first tooth once." Jon smiles widely as Jace's unconvinced face slowly changse to curious. "Want to know the dare?" Jace nods. "Yes! Hurry up, we have to go to Party City!" Jonathon hurrieldly runs out of his room and down the steps.
Jace jumps from the chair, and keeps chase. "What could you possibly need from there!?"
"This is perfect." Jon chuckles, as he pulls out his phone. Putting his hand up, Jace denies any physical proof of the idiotic costume, he unwittingly agreed to wear, upon accepting the dare. Jonathon takes the picture reguardless. "It's all about the memories. Think about Clary. She'll love this in the future." He still can't stop smiling.
With a heavy sigh, Jace questions his existence. "How does me dressing up like the tooth fairy become a memory for Clary? She'll be asleep."
Holding up his phone, Jonathon confidently states the obvious. "I'll record it for her."
"Oh, he-," Jace begins to shout, but gets shushed.
"Ready?"Jon pushes Jace to Clary's closed bedroom door. "It's been two hours since she went to bed, so she should be dreamland." Jace simply humphs grumpily.
Jace slowly twists the knob, as quietly as possible, opens the door. He puts one foot in, and tip-toes into the room. Jon covers his mouth, barely controlling his laughter at his friend that currently resembles a cartoon character. Immediately, he presses the record button.
Mentally cursing his best friend, he takes hesitant steps to Clary's bed. As his hand creeps under the pillow closest to him, Jace gasps when a lamp turns on. Frozen in his place, his tawny eyes raise to meet curious green ones.
"You're the Tooth Fairy?" the tiny girl asks unfathomably. She eyes the being with a tiara atop bubble gum curly hair, matching pink tuttu, and butterfly wings.
Raising his voice a few octaves, Jace smiles. "What are you doing up, dear?" Sweat is starting to build under the wig the longer she stays quiet. "This can be our little secret, yes? You give me your old tooth, and I will give you two quarters instead of just one."
"Two quarters!?" she exclaims. "Izzy got five dollars from you last month!" Her arms cross in front of her chest, while pouting.
Five dollars!? What! Jace racks his brain trying to come up with a way out of this one. "How about the next time I come, I owe ten dollars?"
Pursing her lips, she debates the offer. "How can I trust you?"
"Do you have a crayon I could borrow?" Jace takes a deep breath while the girl reaches in her table dawer for a torn page from her sketchpad and pencil. He jots down an IOU for the ten dollars. Takes some glitter out of the pouch Jon gave him, and taps on it with the ridiculous toy wand in his hand. "There, now it is a promise. May I have your tooth, now?"
Clary takes the note, folds it twice, and puts it under her pillow. Then she turns toward the table again, and takes out the tooth. "Here." She smiles at Jace's face at the realization that she really planned this out. Fixing his facial features, he gleams, pats Clary's messy red hair, and retreats. "Good night, Clarissa," Jace whispers as he closes her door.
Once shut, Jace exhales loudly, and turns to an empty hallway. The bathroom door creaks, and Jon exits. Upon seeing Jace's face, Jon bellows. Jace hustles him back to his bedroom. "I nearly broke from trying not to laugh when she turned the light on."
Jace shakes head, and grabs his pajamas to change. "Just wait. You get to do it next time."
Clary pulls out the folded piece of paper from under her pillow, and giggles. "Pfft, Tooth Fairy," she mumbles as she puts it in her drawer and turns off the light. Covering herself with her sheets, she whispers, "Jay is stupid." She falls asleep knowing that she'll ask for her ten dollars in the morning.
