Chapter 3: (1,7K)
I AM IN A COVID HAZE ...
The rest of that morning, Ana spent it texting Jason and getting to know him better. She send him the promised picture of her makeup-free and out of bed, though she made a point of telling him that this was her face after a good breakfast. They texted for two whole hours, during which she learned that Jason preferred to be called Taylor and during which he also invited her on a date on Thursday.
It left her with a hopeful smile on her lips, though she didn't share that bit of news with Elliott when she had her weekly call with him. They talked about his job and her studies, about her plans for Spring Break and for the summer vacations. They briefly talked about the first of May, but neither of them really wanted to have this conversation yet, so they just agreed to spend it together.
The rest of the weekend went rather calmly and swiftly. She studied and spent some time with the guys, nothing out of the ordinary.
The Monday morning was a full debrief with her friends over coffee of how each girls weekend went, full of laughter and wiggling eyebrows. Apparently, only Kate and Ana didn't end up getting any this weekend, but they swore that it was only a setback and that the next girls night would end up with many more stories to tell.
Ana barely got to see the guys over the week. It seemed that Christian didn't exist anymore, but since he had an employee who was sick, it was understandable. As for Jack, just like Ana, he was swamped with work with the exams coming up. Usually, they always had dinner together, something nice and delicious that Christian would have prepared, but this week was mostly takeaways, gulping a pizza slice whilst revising notes.
When Thursday came, Ana was rather giddy, it had been a while since she had been on a date, and she had missed the whole thing. So when she got ready for her date, she put on some music, tried different outfits and hairdos, and she left her room hopping a little.
She saw Christian on her way out, waving at him as she left the flat and she joined Taylor in a small place next to the club he worked at. As soon as he saw her, he brightly smiled and patted the table in front of her for her to sit in front of him. She did, keeping for another time that she was the kind of girl who liked romance and gallantry. But it wasn't something that was planning to spring on a first date.
"So, am I going to know where you live tonight?" Taylor asked with a smug smile, which made Ana burst into laughter,
"Nope. I don't sleep on the first date, Taylor."
"I wasn't necessarily thinking of sex. You know, late-night drinks and cuddles."
"I have roommates, I don't want to bother them," she simply said. Taylor gracefully smiled, not insisting, though he added,
"Maybe next time we can cuddle at my place."
"Haha. Well, let's first see if we like each other enough to have another date."
"We've been texting daily for the past six days. I'd say I personally like you very much."
She smiled and admitted, "Yeah, you're not too boring yourself"
He wiggled his eyebrows and they ordered their food and kept on talking, mostly about how Taylor came to work as a bartender. Apparently, he went into an IVY league school but dropped out at some point and started working in hospitality. He liked it and decided to move to the state of Washington where his mother was from.
Ana did her best to avoid talking about her parents, mostly because it wasn't a nice topic to breach on a first date and so she talked about Elliott a bit when Taylor talked about his two sisters. She was glad that she could hear in his voice that Taylor was close to his sisters, who were both housewives in Texas.
When came time to leave, Taylor checked the tab and slid it toward Ana, telling her how much she owed before he went to the bathroom. She paid her part, an insecure part of her wondering if the world had evolved since she last dated and that now it was systematically Dutch treat, no matter who invited the other to the date.
Taylor came back and walked her out of the restaurant so she could hail a cab home. He smiled at her, playing with her hair as he told her,
"I gather you also dint kiss on the first date."
She brightly smiled and shook her head to confirm his suspicions, "Until our next date, in that case, Princess."
He then let her go home and Ana texted her friends on her ride back, wondering to them if she wasn't the strong independent woman she thought she was. They all assured her that she wasn't overthinking and that technically the one who invited was the one who paid for the date. But on the other hand, Andrea insisted that some men just didn't know anymore and didn't want to overstep their boundaries by assuming they should pay for everything.
When she got home, Ana was still juggling between texting her friends and texting Taylor that she was home safe. She was still in the vestibule, removing her shoes when she heard Christian's voice, annoyed and brooding,
"Well, I don't like it. It's a long-ass time to wait, Jack!"
"Maybe, but there's nothing you can do about it, babe. It's the way it is."
"Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm allowed not to like it in the meantime."
Ana cleared her throat, so the boys could know that their conversation was no longer private. Both of them turned their heads to her, surprised to see her home so early since it was a date night for her. Christian quickly looked away but Jack smiled and patted the sofa next to him for her to join them in their movie night.
"You're home early," Jack noted and she shrugged, slouching next to him and reaching for the popcorn on his lap. "So, how was your date?"
"Meh. It was okay. Just not as romantic as I'd like. But I'm a cheesy girl, to begin with, so …"
She heard Christian scoffing at the other side of Jack's side, but she didn't pay mind to it. Out of the two, Jack looked like the romantic one. Jack smiled at her, asking, "You're a romantic kind of girl?"
"100%. I'm all for hearts and flowers and chocolates and all of that. I'm a big sucker for chivalry, you know men opening the door for women, and giving up their coat when it's cold and making the girl swoon … You know, all of that."
Jack chuckled, bumping his shoulder to Ana's in a friendly manner. She munched in some popcorn, asking in return,
"Are you guys romantics are heart?"
"In a way," Jack said, looking at her with a weird light in his eyes. She frowned, but he didn't develop any further. So she bent forward so she could see Christian and he glanced at her for a second before muttering grumpily, "Depends for whom. Romance comes after love, not before."
She made a noise that didn't commit her any further into that conversation. So she slumped back into the sofa and kept on texting her friends, trying to decipher if she should be the one initiating the next date with Taylor.
"Are you going to see him again?" Christian abruptly asked, making Ana snap her head up from her phone and turn her head to the guys. Jack just kept on watching the movie, and Christian also had his eyes on the screen. So she let him know,
"Well, why not? I mean, he's not a romantic for sure, but he's nice. And he's easy on the eye," she added slyly.
"We're nice and easy on the eye!" Christian exclaimed, making Jack elbow him in the ribs whilst Ana rolled her eyes, shaking her head with laughter.
"I know, I know. It's a shallow observation, but it's true. Taylor looks good, and I'd be lying if I'd say it wasn't the first thing I noticed when I saw him. You said romance comes after love, well, my folks always said the body is what attacks the eyes, the soul is what makes the heart stay. Now I just need to find out if I like his soul."
She then got up and shorted, wishing the boys a goodnight before she went to her room and got ready for the night. It was still early after her shower, so she popped her earbuds in her ears and studied some more. After a couple of hours of studying, interrupted by a few texts from Taylor, she stopped to get some beauty sleep and went to the kitchen to drink some water first.
"You look so good on your knees, ready and begging to please me," Christian's voice said, all hard and commanding.
She stood frozen, shocked to hear this demeanour from Christian, the shy and awkward Christian who didn't always control his emotions. This voice was controlled, dominating, and from what she could hear, foul.
She quickly rose her hands to her ears, doing her best to not hear the filthy things Christian was telling Jack and she rushed to her room, doing her best to ignore how her body had reacted to what she had just overheard.
