Chapter 12 (2,9K)
Christian watched Ana rush out of the bedroom they had shared for the past seven nights without a single glance in his direction. He grunted in his hands, doing his best to respect Ana's wishes and repressing his urge to confront her right there and then. It would be bad forms to include her brother in their relationship since it couldn't even be called love life. He stayed like that for a couple of minutes, doing his best to reason himself that even if they had been in a traditional relationship, she might have wanted to wait before telling her brother, and then he texted Jack to remind him that Elliott was coming so he wouldn't say anything compromising when he got home.
Then he got out of bed and opened the window to refresh the room and took a cold shower, reminiscing of that sweet moment that happened just before Elliott knocked and brought reality to their home. Maybe Ana had pointed out that it was different because she didn't want that kind of coitus. She wanted the rough and dirty side that he had promised her when they started this whole thing. Just a week ago. They only had one week of Ana.
Once he was cleaned, Christian left the bedroom and went looking for Ana and her brother. He found them in the kitchen, though they weren't aware of his presence straight away. Ana was still in her robe and her cute little PJs with bunnies on them whilst she was brewing coffee, turning her back to Elliott (and indecently Christian) as her brother inquired,
"So … you got yourself a boyfriend?"
She laughed, looking through for mugs, "How did we pass from your plans to take me out for lunch tomorrow, to me having a potential boyfriend?"
"The hickey you're sporting did it for us."
She rolled her eyes, sitting next to Elliott as she matter-of-factly said, "None of your beeswax, Lelliott."
"Mmh, kinda. Shall I change the reservation to three people? I think I should meet the guy, you know. Just so he knows someone will ruin his face if he breaks your heart."
"Again, none of your beeswax," she sing-sang, buttering her toast, unknowingly making Christian realise that he had gotten lazy over the past week and that he had barely cooked or baked anything.
Elliott mumbled something, clearly not happy with this answer before Christian saw Ana's brother's ears turn red as he said as if nothing, "It wouldn't be right for you to bring a man here, you know that, Beans? I mean, that would be so rude to your roommates. Jack and Christian are good guys and —"
"Oh my God! I'd never bring a date here, Elliott! I was raised right, you know. Now, can we drop this conversation? Or at least wait for me to have my morning coffee before we tackle the sex talk?"
Christian took it as his cue to announce his presence and so he clears his throat and properly stepped into the kitchen. Ana barely looked in his direction whereas Elliott was all smiles to him, getting up to give him one of those bro hugs that Jack liked so much.
"So, I see that you emerge from your hibernation post exams for your brother but not for us. Someone has favourites I see," he said nonchalantly, playing the part Ana wanted him to play. He could be petty and throw many innuendos that would not be so subtle, but it seemed important to Ana to keep her brother in the dark, and he wouldn't want to hurt her like that.
He sat by the counter, in front of Elliott and Ana served them both coffee before she jovially announced, "Well, since you have company, I'm going to transform into a human and have a shower."
Both men watched her leave the kitchen, ad Christian could understand why Elliott was so suspicious. Ana looked freshly fucked. In a matter of fact, she was freshly fucked. Her hair was all over the place, her skin was glowing and her neck was marked by a bright purple hickey.
"Sometimes I wish I had been an only child. Less hassle and more presents," Elliott whined in a mumble, though Christian could tell that he didn't really mean it. Still, he remained silent, not particularly eager to set Elliott off on his rant against Ana and who she was doing. Especially since Elliott was closer to Jack, to begin with.
"So …" Elliott started, and before he even said a word, Christian knew what he was about to ask. Elliott cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable about what he was about to ask, but then he went on a whole different course, "Ana said you invited her to go on vacation with you?"
Christian shrugged, playing it cool, "To be fair, the whole thing is already paid for. Two or three people, it doesn't change much except the fun we can have. But she said t would be accordingly to her interviews. I think she wants to make sure she has a job before going anywhere."
"Yeah, I tried to lure her back to Cali, but she blew me off. Ana has always been serious about this aspect of her life. Probably why she majored in business."
Christian approvingly nodded and they fell into yet another silence during which Elliott was looking at her bedroom door with suspicion. Christian could almost see the wheels making connections into Elliott's brain as he voiced his thoughts,
"I think she wants to stay with her boyfriend here in New York this summer." Christian didn't reply anything, and Elliott sipped on his coffee before awkwardly asking, "Does Ana … I mean, she doesn't bring … you don't hear anything coming —"
"I am not talking to you about your sister's love life, Elliott. But to answer your question, Ana has always come home, always alone and we've never heard anything odd coming from her room."
Elliott sighed with relief, and Christian kept to himself that Ana didn't need to bring a man home because she already had two at home pinning for her. Though who would want their sister to be adored?
Christian drank on his coffee, wishing that Jack would just hurry home. Jack was the one who got along well with Elliott … or with people in general. There was a reason why Christian very rarely accompanied Jack to dinner functions, and it wasn't just because Jack didn't like the PDA. Christian just didn't like 'hanging out'. In fact, he didn't like people. Which was the main reason why their spare room remained unoccupied for so long, and why they had opted for studious students who wouldn't want to necessarily spend time with them (or at least Christian).
Jack often made fun that Christian had the job that required the most people skills when Christian was a dead puppy away from being a psycho serial killer.
Elliott and he remained in a small awkward silence for a couple of more minutes before the Steele brother asked, "Where is Jack, by the way? He's not working so close to graduation, is he?"
"No, he's buying Ana's graduation gift."
"That's nice of you," Elliott said, politely nodding before looking in direction of Ana's room where they could hear the water running. "I got her this."
He reached for his bag and pulled out a jewellery set of a ring, earrings and a necklace. The design was rather simple but elegant. Simple circles of silver ornamented by little diamonds on each jewel.
"It's nice … Much nicer than what we got her."
"It's a replica of her mom's favourite. I had it made in some big fancy shop in LA but … Mom's colour was pink-rose. Ana is a silver kind of girl. I've never seen her with anything golden in her life. So … yeah, I guess she'll like it."
Christian didn't say anything, but he couldn't help but think that this was probably the best gift Ana could ever have. He doubted that she often brought the topic of their parents, for fear of hurting her brother. But having her brother getting her something that she would get to wear very day to remember her mother by … it was priceless.
And in a way, he was glad to see that Elliott didn't try to suppress the memory of their parents unto Ana. He had thought after her birthday that their parents were a taboo topic between them, but now that he had this jewellery set before his eyes, he wondered if it was just a good old classic case of miscommunication on Ana's part regarding the celebration of her birthday.
"Oh, by the way, I brought the milestone album," Elliott exclaimed, going back to his bag and pulling a photo album. "Dad made one for each of us. But instead of random pictures, they're milestones one. So I continued Ana's. See, that's when she moved here."
He showed Christian a picture of Ana taking a selfie (that she probably sent to her brother a week after she moved in if the new curtains were any indication). Then Elliott let Christian look at the album from the start. Ana's first day out of the hospital, first tooth, first scar, first tantrum, first haircut, first day at school, first fiend…
Jack came in when Jack was lost in the middle of Ana and her many medals. She definitely had a brain on her. Science fair, horse riding, a black belt in taekwondo, spelling bee, she even had a couple of poems published in her local newspaper. He barely took notice of Jack and his bro-embrace with Elliott, though he smiled when Jack placed himself by his side and looked at the image of Ana brandishing a trophy that she had won yet another science fair.
"We live in Einstein, babe. Maybe she'll build us a time machine so we can rig everything stock related. I'm going back to the '80s and investing shitload on Apple and Amazon."
Christian rolled his eyes, still flipping the pages as Ana's life unfolded in 2D before his eyes. She had a full and fulfilling childhood, being a nerd and a popular girl at the same time. The same year that she won her umpteenth spelling bee and math triathlon, she was starting as the youngest captain cheerleader of her school.
"What are you guys up to?" Ana suddenly asked out of nowhere, he voice and her eyes suspicious of the three men in front of her.
Elliott grinned and admired without a single shame in the word, "Nothing. I'm just reprising dad's role into shaming you with the album."
Ana's face passed from nostalgic, to touched to horrified in a bling of a second before she screeched and reached for the album, snatching it away from Christian. "Are you insane? I'm full-on naked in some of those pictures!" She accused, glaring at her brother who repented to be oh-so innocent at this moment.
"Too late, Ana. we've already seen you naked," Christian quipped, earning a glare from Ana and a disapproving look from Jack. Elliott though was blissfully unaware of the double meaning.
.~°~. .~°~. .~°~.
When the time came to go to bed, it occurred to both men that it would be their first night without Ana after this week of pure bliss. They couldn't even sneak into her room since Elliott was sleeping in the living room, separating the three of them.
Christian was laying in their bed, looking at the ceiling as Jack closed the curtains and he admitted to his lover, "I almost told her that I love her this morning."
This ought to slightly stop Jack in his track before he finished what he was doing and came to lay next to Christian. "Why didn't you?"
"Elliott interrupted me. And … well, she doesn't want him to know…. It's going to be hard when she'll leave." He let out with a chagrinned sigh.
"Why do you assume that she is going to leave?"
"Really, Jack? You're supposed to be the people person out of us two. Have you seen how they are together? They are super close. If she doesn't want to share this huge change in her life with him, it's because she's here just for the fun that she didn't get to have whilst in college. We're a crash course."
Jack rolled his eyes, not following Christian in his pity party. "Who's being gloomy now? But … babe, I think you're just overreacting. I mean, technically, we're just a week old, so maybe Ana doesn't want to get her brother involved so early in a new relationship of hers. Plus, Elliott is a bit conservative, so the whole menage a trois might freak him out."
"Yeah, right. Elliott who has the most unconventional job in the world, who cries in front of strangers and is BFF with a gay guy is conservative. And I'm Queen Elizabeth."
"Stereotype much? Not everyone is a walking cliche, babe. Conservative doesn't mean that you have to be a macho man who's racist, sexist, chauvinistic and homophobe. I just think that he has conservative values. And I think that no sex before marriage is one of them."
"Elliott is a virgin," Christian snickered, his voice oozing with sarcasm. Elliott looked nothing like a choir boy. Quite the opposite. He screamed sex on legs, no matter how much he didn't like thinking of Ana's brother that way.
"I don't know, he never told me anything about that. But I wouldn't be surprised. So I think that Ana just wants to make sure we're a real relationship before she goes blabber to her brother that she has two boyfriends."
Christian let a simple sound out of his mouth, still not fully convinced and so Jack sighed and took his phone to text Ana on their shared group on WhatsApp,
Christian is being moody over this morning. ~ Jack
OMG! I am so sorry, Christian! I didn't mean to throw you like that. It's just that Elliott can be quite a cliche of a big brother sometimes and I don't want to deal with that right now. Be glad I didn't make you jump off the window. XP ~ Ana
That's what I told him. Maybe he'll believe it now that YOU said it. ~ Jack
Kiss him sorry for me. ~ Ana
They both laughed at the text, and even more at the selfie, she sent just after of her sending kisses to her camera.
We miss you. We have gotten used to sleeping with you in the bed. It doesn't feel the same without you. ~ Jack
Well, you still have Christian's teddy bear XD. ~ Ana
It's not the same! He's not as soft as you! ~ Christian
Don't even try to get me all hot and bothered T.T My brother is literally between us! Gee, I feel like I'm in high school all over again! Ridiculous. ~ Ana
I like the idea of you in high school. Maybe I should have gotten you a cheerleader uniform so you could cheer for us. ~ Christian
I second this idea! ~ Jack
And I'm going to ignore you guys for the rest of the night because unlike you, I only have my hand to help me out! Night guys, sweet dreams. xoxo ~ Ana

The next day, they cheered for Ana as loud as they could when she received her diploma. Christian paid close attention to Elliott, wondering if Jack's theories were true. On one hand, Elliott made quite a few heads turn, including Ana's friends. On the other, he didn't pay attention to any girl trying to flirt her way to him. It could mean that he wasn't interested, but Christian was always rather taciturn outside of his home, and he was anything but a virgin.
After the graduation ceremony was over, they stayed a little, talking to Ana's friends, professors and as Christian was used to seeing after many years as Jack's date, future employers trying to headhunt the best prospects. As Jack had predicted, Ana had a couple of people coming her way, especially since she majored in business and it was always a field recruiting when a blonde middle-aged woman all classy and proper walked to Ana as if she was on a mission.
"Miss Steele?"
"Yes?" Ana was all smiles as she shook the woman's hand.
"I have been keeping an eye on you ever since Pr Landry told me about you at the beginning of this year. My name is Elena Lincoln, and I have a business proposition for you."
