"So, this is a nice car," Elliott commented as Ana was driving them to the airport.
Christian had lent her his car so she could drop her brother at the airport and spend some quality time with him, though she was mostly interested in getting her brother away from the guys. It seemed that Elliott had made it his life mission to embarrass her with awkward childhood stories, which in a way wasn't that bad, that was what their parents used to do every time any of them would present to them a new friend. But if she could keep the embarrassment to a minimum, it would be great. If she could do it aboard a very nice and new Chrysler Dodge Jeep, it would be even better
"I know," she sing-sang all happy. She loved Christian's car. It was big, powerful, impressive and enjoyable to drive … just like its owner.
"Now, you know what to get me for Christmas," she added, tapping on the wheel with her nails. Elliott grimaced and she laughed, letting him off the hook, "I don't expect a car for Christmas. Least of all from you. Besides, if all goes well, by Christmas I will have a company car."
"So you're going to go with that Lincoln lady?"
"Why not?"
"You had offers with more money, for starters. Plus, you know I can get you into Google, or even whatever Zuckerberg calls his company nowadays."
Ana rolled her eyes, taking the exit that led them to JFK.
"First of all, Google and Meta are looking for brainiacs in informatics, not business majors. Second, she sold me a good pitch. I'm going with my guts here. Third, I like the idea of working for a woman who made a name for herself in a world of men. Especially in her time."
"In her time, she's not a dinosaur. In fact, she's quite hot for her age."
"Shall I remind you that us women didn't have the right to have a bank account with our husbands' say so just 60 years ago? So yeah, I'll go with the strong independent woman who is still going to pay me above my market value."
Elliott chuckled a hint of pride in his tone. Every offer Ana had over the past few weeks have been offers above her market value as a freshly out of school employee. Even Elena who proposed less money still proposed more money than what Ana was supposed to be worth.
"I just feel she has the most to offer career-wise," Ana added, making Elliott nod in agreement. "Plus, that Flynn guy creeped me out. I'm sure I would have ended up suing him for sexual harassment."
"You don't need to get lawyers involved, Beans. You know I'm here for you."
"Yeah, I know. But I like the idea of seeing my brother out in the open and not behind bars."
He rolled his eyes and she gently tapped his shoulders, her eyes still on the road. She always felt that she had been lucky in that department. Of course, like any girl she knew, she had had the owl whistles, and the occasional dick-pic, and obviously the 'smile a little', but she never had the scary and traumatic experience of sexual assault. And she was more grateful because she knew that her overprotective brother could go to some drastic lengths to protect her.
"So … how can Christian afford such a nice car? Doesn't he own a small pub or something?"
"A cafe. Christian is a flannel away from being a hipster," Ana laughed, before she explains, "His place is very successful, to be fair. So successful that he only goes there when needed or to check from time to time."
"Yes, I did think that it was odd that he never worked when I am around. And there I thought it was for my looks."
Ana laughed again, before casually letting her brother know, "He makes a little less than a mil a year in profits."
"Holy shit! Why do they need you?" Elliott mused and Ana repressed the Christian in her to retort that she was needed for purely sexual reasons.
"First of all, they live in New York. Also, they put a lot of money away for their retirement, and their emergency fund, and also they want to buy another property. I've been selling Cali for you."
Elliott whistled, impressed before he admitted to his sister, "I'm really glad that your tenants/friends are guys so put together. They can take over when I'm not around to guide you to the righteous path."
Ana rolled her eyes yet again and parked in the airport's parking, decided to talk about something else, "Anyway, what about you? How's Laura? When are you going to give me nieces and nephews to spoil?"
He glared at her and she openly snickered as he haughtily replied, "As if I'd ever marry that hag. But I've met someone nice."
"Oh? What's her name?"
"We'll talk about my love life when we'll talk about yours," he retorted with a knowing smirk and Ana decided that if he wanted to go down that road, she would make him regret it. Elliott had never been comfortable talking about anything that went beyond hand-holding.
"You have a love life. I have a sex life. I was the jock in high school, and you totally were the nerdy nerd sibling."
"You can't be a jock, you're a girl," he reasoned matter-of-factly and Ana stuck her tongue out.
"You know what I mean."
"Are you really not going to tell me about that guy? I promise I won't bring the embarrassing stories as I did with Christian and Jack. I was just trying to …"
"… keep the tradition alive. I know. It's all fresh and new for now. But when it will be serious, adult serious, not kid serious like when I was in high school, I will let you know for sure, Lelliott."

When Ana came back home, she found Jack watching reruns of Stargate SG1 on cable, fully enjoying his few weeks of freedom before going back to programming classes, and ultimately going back to school. She removed her shoes and went straight for his lap, snuggling against him as he let her know that Christian was at work because of a broken expresso machine, which probably meant that he would be in a foul mood. Although Christian was always there for his employees, and never complained when one was sick or unable to come to work, he hated when appliances died on him.
"I hope Elliott wasn't too sad to leave," Jack said, wrapping his arms around Ana.
"Nah. Well, he is, but just because I won't spend my one week holiday with him. He really tried to sell me the Californian beaches, as if I have never seen them," she joked and Jack chuckled, his whole chest echoing with it.
For a peaceful moment, they stayed like that until Jack kissed her hair and let her know, "I hope that you know that we truly care about you, Ana. Both Christian and I are hoping for a long term thing with you, here."
"Really?" She couldn't help but muse, lifting her head up as her heart grew with thrill. This was something that had been weighing on her over the past three nights that Elliott had been home. She had meant to talk to them about it, but she didn't really know how to say it without appearing needy. Plus, there was the issue that she was the plus one in their already established relationship.
"Did we make you doubt that?"
"No! I mean … I don't know, Jack. I am the third party after all. I'm the one crashing into your long term relationship. And —"
Jack interrupted her by cupping her face and forcing her to look at him, "You're not crashing, Ana. You were invited. You were more than welcomed."
He then kissed her with tenderness, and any doubt that she might have at that moment flew off the window. At that right instant, nothing had ever seemed more right than the relationship she had with the guys,
When they broke their kiss, Jack longly looked into her blue eyes, and she could see what he wanted to say. But then he gently smiled and shook his head, assessing, "You're not ready for those words, yet. But know that they are here."
She brightly smiled at him, snuggling back against him, so grateful for his insightfulness. He was right, she wasn't ready to have those words out in open, no matter how she felt for them yet. It was too early for any of them.
"You're awesome, Jack. I hope you know that."
"I do. But it's always good to hear it. Especially from the mouth of a hot babe like you."
He lifted her head back up, but just as he was about to kiss her, Christian came back home. He smirked with victory when he saw them together and kicked his shoes out as he darkly announced, "We have three nights and three days to catch up with."
