Chapter 15 (1,9K)

After a few months of working for Linc Inc', Ana was sure of two things. She didn't waste her years and money on a useless degree because she loved what she was doing. And she made one of the best decisions of her life by working for Elena Lincoln. Though at the rate it was going, it looked more and more that she was working with Elena rather than for her.

Elena was something really forthcoming, something that Ana liked. From the start, she told Ana what she expected of her and what kind of future she was seeing for the two of them. Not that Ana complained about that. She liked someone who had a very good idea of what they wanted their future to look like.

Still, though Elena didn't say a word, she felt that the older woman had a very good idea of what was going on between Christian, Jack and Ana. There was something in the way Elena looked at Ana every time Christian or Jack would come to pick her up that was collusive and even encouraging. But maybe Ana was just seeing things.

The guys really supported her in her first step in the corporate world, whether it was when she was in need of a pep talk in the morning, or when she just needed a long hug after a very exhausting day. But that was also probably an aftermath of their growing relationship.

Though they still didn't exchange their words of love, it was obvious how they felt for each others. She often thought of just blurting the words out, letting the guys know for sure about the debt of her feelings but … she oddly felt shy about it. Or maybe she just wanted to have a romantic outburst for them to remember this day for a long time.

In fact, she hadn't expected it, but Christian was the most romantic toward her. For instance, every Monday, he would have flowers delivered to her office, making most of her coworkers jealous. Jack still had cute little attentions for her, like the fact that he always had chocolates for her for each day of her cycle. He even bought a hot water bottle for her, in the shape of Tinky-Winky.

This was a running joke between Ana and Jack that would never escape Christian. In fact, she had changed his designated ringtone to the Teletubbies theme song while Jack took it a step further and changed his name on his phone to Tinky-Winky. Christian always made a face when they joked about that, but it was obvious that he didn't actually mind, he was just getting into their game.

So all in all, all was well in their lives since they had been together. Ana even spent Thanksgiving with the boys at Jack's family, and no one batted an eye. almost. There were a few jokes on how Jack had decided to go full-on Mormon, but the wrong way around, and how Ana totally take advantage of this situation because this was a dream come true to many. So she should enjoy it for those who couldn't if not for herself.

Ana loved her time at the Hyde's, they had been very welcoming, and understanding. She wasn't sure if Elliott would be the same. Deep down, she knew that he would get over it. Because both Christian and Jack were making her happy, and because making them happy in return was something that was becoming vital to her. She couldn't picture a life without either of them, they were part of her future. But, no matter how Elliott could be open, he was still rather traditional about many things, and the sanctity of a couple was one of those things. So she kept pushing the day she would break the news to him, even though she didn't hide from him that she was seeing someone.

She was supposed to visit him over Christmas, to the guys' greatest dismay. They had wanted for the three of them to spend Christmas together, but Ana didn't see herself leaving her brother alone on a date that was supposed to be all about family. Still, she promised Christian and Jack to spend New Years' Eve with them, so they could have a little catchup over their missed Christmas. With a little luck, she would tell Elliott about her relationship status, and he would bless them.

On the Thursday that followed thanksgiving, Ana went to a retirement party at Linc' Inc for one of Elena's oldest employees. Her PA. He had been there since the start, and Elena was letting him go with a big fat check as well as a caravan so he could cruise around the country as he had always said he would.

Pete was a nice older man, always so polite and a true epitome of gentleman fashion. Ana was a bit sad that he left so early after she started, but Elena had explained that Pete and she had a deal, he would be fully devoted to her work-wise but she would let him know at the birth of his first grand-baby. So she did after the birth of a little Sarah.

The party went well, with obviously a couple of people drinking more than they should have at a work function, especially knowing that they had work the next day, but Ana spent most of her night talking with Elena. She even sent a text to the guys so they wouldn't worry when the party started dying, but Elena and she kept on talking about their lives.

She admired the woman who built this empire by herself at a time when it was definitely not easy for women. And even now that she had made her marks and proved to everyone that she could do it, people still found something to trash her about. Mostly her personal life.

Elena was a 60 years old woman, divorcee and without a steady relationship with her only son. By the standards of people from her generation, she had failed as a woman there was no point in being successful and happy if you didn't have a respectable life back home as a loving wife and a devoted mother.

But Elena didn't care. She knew early on that she wasn't going to settle for the life of being a perfect little wife. That's why she divorced Eric. And the only thing that she really regretted from that period was that she lost custody of her son because she was seen as an unfit mother for running a business with no husband. It didn't stop her from seeing him, she even said that they have a much better relationship than the one Eric has with him, but she didn't get to have her son with him as much as she wanted.

Ana noticed that Elena always had a sense of pride when she talked about her son. The role that she had offered Ana, she had offered it to her son first, but he refused, saying that he would make it on his own, and not be part of the elitist society system. He had started a business with a friend of his and was rather successful at it, though this success didn't follow in his love life.

"It's a shame that you already have your hands so full, or I would have tried to set him up with him. I think you'd make a cute couple," She teased and Ana rolled her eyes, realising at this moment how deep in this relationship she was.

Elena might have only been casually joking, but when Ana thought of the future, she pictured the 2,5 kids, the white picket fence, the dog and Jack and Christian by her side. There was no other way around for her.

"Cute couple doesn't make everything. I like what I have because it goes deeper than … all of that shallowness," Ana said, matter-of-factly and Elena agreed.

"So … it is serious between you and hottie number one and two?"

Ana nodded, feeling that if she was serious about this relationship as well as about her job, people would need to get used to the fact that she was with two men at once. Elena benevolently smiled and said,

"Good. They seem like standup guys. Maybe you'll even have it much easier than me. Your generation is much more aware and outspoken about the casual injustices of everyday life.

Eric felt threatened that I had a job bringing in so much money. To hi I should have been a part-time secretary and stayed at home to take care of him and our kids. Thank god we only had one. But nowadays … men are okay with women earning a lot of money. They are okay with being stay-at-home-dads. They are okay with letting women thrive and are even proud of it. Make sure your hotties are in that category."

When Ana finally got home, it was past three in the morning. She had spent most of her night speaking to Elena, about work, about the future, about politics. About all and nothing. Still, even though she knew she would have very little sleep, Ana was happy and content with her evening.

What she didn't expect what to find an angry Christian waiting for her. "Why are you some so late?!"

She repressed a sigh, not eager to start an argument so late in the night, though she reminded him, "I texted you that I was talking to Elena and that I would be home later than planned."

"I don't care! You have no business being out alone so late!" He roared, tearing Jack away from his sleep as he pooped his head through the doorframe to see what this was about.

"Christian, she's home and she's safe."

"She can't go out and come back in the middle of the night like that! This isn't fucking high school! You should know better Ana!"

Ana looked at Christian, incredulous. She only had one glass, and she had never gotten into an accident. But for Christian to talk to her as if she was a stupid teenager who didn't know her limits or how to look after herself …

"Christian, I love you from the bottom of my heart. The two of you. But our relationship is not a cage. If you want me to be a good little wife with a curfew who asks our permission every time she wants to go out, you have to say it now so I can walk out of this relationship with as little heartache as possible for the three of us. Because though I don't mind you being controlling in the bedroom, I have no intention of staying with someone who controls my life once outside of our bedroom,"

And on those words, she stormed to her old bedroom for the first time since they started dating, locking the door behind her and going to bed angry and hurt.
