Chapter 16 (2,1K)
As they heard the lock of Ana's room echo, Jack glared at Christian. Christian felt a lump grow in his throat as a cold shiver crawled down his spine. This was the first time that Ana left their bed and went back to her room. In fact, it was the first time that she was getting angry at one of them. And he didn't like at all how he was feeling like a jerk at this right moment.
"You were out of line, Christian," Jack accused, and though Christian agreed and knew that he crossed a line, he still tried to justify himself. But Jack stopped him before he could even utter a single word,
"No. You can't expect her to understand your fears and cater to them if you don't tell her about how they got here in the first place."
"She could have simply called and I would have gone pick her up. I don't think I am asking for much, here."
Jack rolled his eyes and got closer to his lover as he coldly told him, "And I told you that Ana was too independent to simply report to you all that she does without a good reason. I love you, Christian. I really do, but if she walks out on us for this when it could have been avoided if you had just opened up to her, it will take me time to forgive you."
And on those words, Jack walked away from their room to go sleep on the sofa, leaving Christian alone in their California king bed.
All night long, Christian stared at the ceiling, weighing the pros and the cons of letting Ana know about what happened to his Mom. On one hand, Jack was right, he needed to tell her about this important part of his life. But … what if it drove her away.
Never for even a moment, he thought of blaming his father for what he did. And when Jack came into the picture, Christian knew that what his father did, he would do it as well to anyone harming Jack. And it was the same for Ana. The idea that some scumbag could try to harm her made his blood boil, and he knew that he would do anything in his power to do what his father had done.
In fact, the only reason he wasn't behind bars with his father was because that very night his father insisted for him to stay home with Grace. Ever since the incident, they always did their best to never leave her alone.
And no matter how much he knew he was right, he also knew that not everyone felt the same when life and death was involved. Moreover, he knew that Ana was against capital punishment. What if she couldn't bear the idea of living with someone who would commit murder over her without blinking an eye?
Christian thought about it all night long. Maybe he ought to take her to visit his mother in Florida. After all, he was due to a visit soon, and he knew that his Mom would like the company. Ana was a lovely girl to be around with. But that meant going away for the whole weekend, and he wasn't sure Ana would agree to spend so much time with him after what happened last night.

When he got out of bed the next day, both Ana and Jack had left for their respective jobs, but he had gotten up late on purpose to avoid them. He knew that Jack could be rather sullen when upset, and he didn't want to know what Ana was like upset. He wasn't sure what he would prefer, her being angry at him and yelling, or her straight up ignoring him.
So he simply did his little routine, cleaning up the place as per usual before going to his coffee shop as a surprise visit to see how things were going. He waited there for lunchtime, and when it was shortly before midday, he went to Ana's office. He knew that she wasn't supposed to work this afternoon and he figured that it would be his best window of opportunity to talk to her when she was free.
He got to the reception and asked if he could wait in her office, but the front desk lady didn't seem ready to cooperate.
"Come on, I know where it's is. Just let me pass through," he tried to argue, hoping with all his heart that Ana didn't give instructions to stop him from seeing her.
"Ha, le boyfriend is here. Let him pass, Cara," said a woman's voice behind him and he turned his head only to see Mrs Lincoln.
Christian had to say that he was mixed about Mrs Lincoln. But he wasn't sure if it was because of her, or because of him. She was … the opposite of his Mom, though in the same age bracket. He was sure that Elena Lincoln had been one of those women burning bras and showing their tits to the world doing so.
The couple of times he had talked to Ana about Mrs Lincoln, Ana had dismissed him by saying that it was the man in him and the patriarchy he represented that was feeling threatened. And in a way, he felt some of it was true. Elena was a self-made woman at a time when it was near impossible to be. But … he didn't mind Ana being independent and career-driven. Maybe he just minded because she was from another generation and that she was supposed to fit in an example more like the one his Mom had set for him.
As they were in the elevator leading tool Ana's and Mrs Lincoln's office, the older woman openly checked Christian out, making him feel slightly uncomfortable. He wasn't daft, he knew he had looks and he knew that both men and women found him way above the attractive mark. Elena Lincoln was far from being the first older woman who would check him out, or even hit on him. But … she was Ana's boss. It felt just wrong.
"Ana sure is lucky. Though you should be on the lookout. Women like her rarely go unnoticed for long. Mostly because she has it all. The looks, the brain and the drive. It's very sexy and appealing, even more to your generation."
Christian awkwardly nodded, not getting invested in this conversation. First of all, he knew that Ana was the freaking package. As Mrs Lincoln said, she was a triple threat. And though he was a trusting man when it came to his relationships, it still annoyed him that many people were going to try and steal Ana away in their future. He just knew, Jack knew it, even Mrs Lincoln knew it.
But more than that, she was Ana's boss. Sure he was rather open to his employees and knew a lot about their personal lives, but that was because he had a small business. And he always did his best to keep a line between them. Line that Elena Lincoln seemed to care very little about.
Once they reached their floor, Mrs Lincoln waved him goodbye and Christian knocked after quickly bowing his head to Andrea, Ana's very own PA. He heard a muffled 'get in' and did as told only to find Ana at her desk, typing something on her laptop all the whilst talking on the phone.
She looked at Christian from head to toe as she kept on talking on the phone, saying how she didn't care if there was some delay due to staff shortage and that if the deadline wasn't met, she would take her business elsewhere. It seemed that the other party agreed to her demands because she hang up with a satisfied smile on her face.
Then she looked back at Christian, before tiredly scratching her eyes and telling him, "Give me five minutes to finish this email."
Christian nodded and went to the window to admire the view, just so she wouldn't feel too self-conscious about him staring at her. He had to say, Mrs Lincoln had chosen the perfect spot for her building and picked the perfect floor for her office. He had an amazing view of Seattle from where he was.
"Okay, I'm done. What do you want Christian? To scold me even more?" Ana suddenly said, tearing Christian away from his contemplation. He turned to look at her and saw that she probably spent a restless night. She looked tired. He repressed his desire to take her in his arms and cleared his throat,
"I'd like to take you somewhere for the rest of the day. Please?" He quickly added when he saw that she was ready to argue against that. "I'm sorry Ana. I crossed the line yesterday night and I let my worry say things that I dent think the least in the world. I shouldn't have cornered you like that, and I shouldn't have shouted at you either. I … I was just so worried and … I'm sorry, but I don't think this is something that will disappear anytime soon."
He watched Ana bite down on her lower lip before she nodded and so he took her hand in his, waiting for her to squeeze it a little to subtly let him know that they were indeed on the mend.
Without a word, they left her office, though she tried to argue for a moment that she drove to work. "I'll drop you off Monday morning," Christian dismissed, kissing her hand before opening for her the passenger door.
For a while, they said nothing, until Ana took a deep breath and shut down the music. "I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have deserted the bed like that. We're bound to have arguments, and that was way too passive aggressive for me. I shouldn't have shut you guys out like that. Next time I'll just scream back."
He chuckled, though he didn't think Ana had anything to ask forgiveness for. As Jack said, Christian had crossed a line. Ana couldn't understand his boundaries if he didn't explain them to her.
"By the way, your boss … I don't know … she was weird in the elevator."
Ana burst into laughter and said, out of breath, "Poor sweet and innocent Christian. You're way out of elena's league. She probably juts the appreciated the handsome guy that you are. I mean, who wouldn't. Plus, I may have gushed a lot about you guys last night. So she sees you under new eyes."
"And you don't mind some woman just ogling at me."
She shrugged, taking a banana out of her bag. "I know my men are handsome. If I have to fight every bitch looking their way, I'd be in jail by now. Women notice other women checking their man out when the man doesn't even notice. For instance, Marla, your coffee girl, the things she does to you in her mind. Sinful."
Christian only half-laughed, his mind focused on that one word Ana said that had some sense of cruel irony on this particular day.
"Anyway, where are you taking me? Because I'm beat. I didn't sleep much last night without my Tinky-Winky."
"We have a good hour before getting there. Just sleep and I'll wake you up."
She smiled at him, and he rested his hand on her thigh as she removed her heels and unfolded her scarf so she could use it as a light duvet. Christian put back on the music, putting the rock station as Ana liked rock and he silently drove to their destination, his heart beating a little faster than usual.
Once there, he woke her up with a kiss and studied her reaction as she saw where they were. She blinked a little, her eyes still heavy with sleep before they focused on the inscription on the building,
