Chapter 17 (1,1K)
Ana looked at the building, a feeling of dread going through her. She had never been in a prison, but she never had the need to. She had always been a good girl, and she only knew good people. And jails were not made for good people.
She wasn't naive enough to not know that sometimes some people were wrongfully incarcerated, but Ana had the feeling that if Christian knew someone in this situation, he would have told her by then. And more importantly, he would have done everything in his power to get that person out of jail.
"What are we doing here?" She asked, doing her best to keep her voice levelled. She watched Christian give his name as he amicably greeted the guard in charge of letting cars in or out and her dread became even colder. This meant he came often if he was friendly with the guards.
"My father," he let her know as he parked near the entrance. Ana bit down on her lower lip, clearly not satisfied with this answer. She knew that Christian's parents were alive because he never used past tense when he talked about them. And she also knew that they weren't estranged because he always had this sweet and soft smile when he talked about them and his childhood.
But she had also noticed that those instances when. He talked about his parents were rare and more as a reaction to something she or Jack would say. Never did he willingly talk about his folks. So she had always assumed that they were living abroad.
"Is he a guard?" She innocently asked though she felt that she already had had the answer. Christian shook his head and told her, "He's in for manslaughter."
She did her best to not react, feeling Christian's eyes on her. But it was all wrong. Whether it was the fact that Mr Grey had killed someone, the fact that Christian was so casual about it, or the fact that he was obviously still on good terms with his Dad since he was friendly with the guards. Was Christian condoning murder?
She felt her heart accelerate as her brain was taking her further than this present moment. If Christian was so casual about the idea of killing someone, how should she feel about it? He was obviously a protective boyfriend, but what if he took it a step too far? Or worse? What if he became violent toward her or Jack?
Still, she followed Christian as they were being checked for weapons, and she followed him into a room where a man in an orange jumpsuit was sitting.
The man was obviously Christian's father. They didn't look much alike, and yet, they did. Something in their eyes and in their demeanour. He had grey strikes in his dark hair and a clean face. In fact, out of his jumpsuit, Ana could have thought that he was a lawyer. But then again, she knew better than to judge a book by its cover.
Mr Grey stood up and Christian walked to him, embracing his father as he received a kiss on his temple, "It's been a while. I thought you had forgotten me."
"I know. I got lost in the newness of a relationship and I privileged Mom over you every time I had my head above water."
"Good," said Mr Grey, approving of his son's choices before frowning, "New relationship? What happened to Jack? I liked Jack."
"He's good. He's back home. And don't worry, I'll him know that he's still your favourite. It's just that …" he reached for Ana who took his hand, keeping her face as impassible as she could.
"Dad, meet my girlfriend. Ana, meet Carrick Grey."
Ana looked at Christian's father, with a small tilt of her head as she greeted him and sat next to Christian.
"Girlfriend? You two-timing my man?"
Christian rolled his eyes at the playful tone of his father whilst Ana just sat there, wishing that Jack was there indeed. She felt that he was there, she wouldn't feel like an outsider and she would also be able to know if she was overeating concerning this whole 'My father is a murderer' thing. She didn't think that she was, but Christian and Mr Grey didn't seem very concerned by the fact that she was meeting him in a prison.
"So, Ana? What brings you to this Hell hole?"
"I thought it was time for you two to meet," Christian answered for her, not that she minded.
Carrick longly looked at her, as if he was assessing her, and then smiled as the three of them talked about the most trivial things. She never even once asked about the reason why he was behind bars, and neither of the men ever mentioned it, so she decided to ask Christian about it later on.
Still, she couldn't help but notice the close relationship between Christian and his father. More, she could see in the way Christian looked or talked to his father that he loved and admired him. And she couldn't get past it.
It was one thing to forgive felony, but murder was one of the two crimes where she drew a line. Especially when it seemed that the criminal had no remorse whatsoever.
From what she could tell, Carrick was living a good life for someone behind bars. He even had a bridge club. It seemed that he got along well with the guard, and both his wife and his son regularly visited him. In fact, he didn't seem to mind being in jail at all and just enjoyed this new life that was imposed on him.
When they left because visitation hours were over, Ana did not say a single word, trying to sort to herself if she could live with that. Could she live with Christian, knowing he was in no way condemning what his father did? But before she made any rash decisions that would impact her life, but also Christian's and Jack's, she knew she needed to talk to Christian.
So once the prison was no longer in sight, she cleared her throat and said,
"Pullover. We need to talk."
