Chapter 19 (2,3K)

Christian opening up to Ana about his family and his past drew them closer than ever, and Jack didn't waste a single occasion to remind him that he had warned him that it would go this way. Though Ana agreed with Jack that Christian should have told her sooner about this part of his life and how he feared it could impact their relationship, she never partook in Jack's teasing. In a way, she understood. It was a scary thing to let someone in, especially when it was something that you kept to yourself for so long.

But to make sure that Christian didn't doubt her word or investment in their relationship, Ana was the one to suggest that maybe they should all visit her for a weekend in February. Of course, Jack put a veto that it could not coincide with Valentine's Day, because he had plans for them and that they, unfortunately (or fortunately) did not include Grace.

Still, both Christian and Jack were sure that Grace would love Ana, and she truly hoped that it would be the case. Jack's family already got along quite well with her, and she even took it upon herself to call Carrick and apologise for her behaviour. He quickly dismissed the thing, saying that he figured that Christian hadn't told her the whole story when she didn't try to know anything about him, and he didn't want to rip this conversation away from his son.

And of course, Carrick, just like the Hydes, made a couple of offhand comments about kids. Ana wasn't sure how she felt about that. She knew she loved both Christian and Jack. She even knew that they were the men of her life. That if anything was to happen between them, she would be heartbroken and devastated. And yes, she wanted kids. But …

They haven't been together for even a year. And yes, they all started developing feelings way before they officially decided to give this unconventional relationship a go, but still. And there was her career as well. She did not know a single woman who didn't have to sacrifice one aspect of her life for another. Elena was a perfect example. Ana hoped that things had changed, but the truth was, even amongst people closer to her age, this still happened.

And anyway, she couldn't even think of starting a family without telling her brother about her relationship. No matter how much of a traditionalist Elliott was, he had always been there for her, even when he wished he hadn't. When she lost her virginity and freaked out about the condom breaking, her boyfriend at the time had bought her the morning after pill, but Elliott was the one who took her to the doctor so she could have a steady contraception. Of course, this meant having one of the longest lectures of her life about the sanctity of waiting for marriage and all of that, but still, he was there for her.

So Ana wanted to let Elliott know because this wasn't something that she wanted to keep from him, or that she should. Especially now that she knew that this relationship she had with the guys was something that she wanted to build her future around.

This was why, as they were watching a movie on a Friday night, eating on the popcorn that Christian made, she said out of nowhere,

"By the way, since I'm spending Christmas with Elliott, I think I'm going to let him know about the awesome men in my life. Like that all our families will know by the new year."

This ought to break Jack's hyper-focus on the movie. Then again, he loved period pieces.

"Are you sure? Christmas is a big deal to break this kind of news."

Ana rolled her eyes. "I'm not confessing to being a serial killer. He knows there is someone. He just needs to know that it's plural. Plus, I don't like the idea of not telling him."

"Are you sure you want to do it alone?"

Ana smiled and kissed Jack's cheek as she told him to stop worrying so much. "I'm not coming out, I'm just updating my brother about my relationship status. At best, as Facebook would put it, I change from single to 'it's complicated."

Christian laughed at that, his head on Ana's lap and he matter-of-factly said, "As long as we're your last relationship status. Don't worry, all will go well."

Elliott was thrilled to know that Ana was coming over Christmas, and promised to have an orgy of food with her. He even hinted that he would make their parent's special dessert for Christmas, which earned a lot of teasing from Ana since she knew it was a long dish to do, and Elliott was not known for his patience in the cooking department.

Unfortunately, Ana's plans of spending Christmas in the warmth of California, enjoying a sunset on the beach all the while having friendly banter with her brother was cut short by an incident that she did not see coming.

A broken foot.

She blamed herself mostly. She had taken the habit to use the stairs between her floor and HR's floor instead of waiting for the lift because it was only three flights of stairs and it was always good to walk a little bit more. But that was a bad idea when she was in brand new heels, and the stairs had just been washed.

And of course, everyone was on her back ever since. Elena proposed to get her a chauffeur as well as a second assistant that would be at her beck and call, and Ana had to fight to refuse them both. She also had to restrain Elliott from coming immediately to see her foot in an overlarge cast. She also had to fight with her PA to remind her that she was just handicapped for a while, and that didn't mean she needed to be mothered.

But worst of all were Christian and Jack. It was as if she suddenly turned into sugar and that she couldn't do anything anymore. When she came back from the hospital, she had to put her foot down (the uninsured one) to go use the loo on her own.

Sure there were some pros to this, like the fact that common bath had become something that occurred daily or the fact that she would always get the winning vote on what to watch or what to eat. But she barely could go anywhere without them worrying for nothing. For the first two days, her normal foot barely touched the ground.

And obviously, they drove her every single day. From work, to work, to her hair and nails appointments, she didn't even get to do her Christmas shopping without them and had to do it online for the first time of her life.

Even in bed, Christian seemed to think that a simple caress was too much for her to bear and though both he and Jack made sure that she was left satisfied, she complained a couple of times that she missed the rough side of their sex life.

It made her a bit wary as to when they would have children and she truly hoped that they would not be as overbearing then. After all, she was incapacitated at this instant, so it could be understandable. If and when she would get pregnant, she would be on her two feet, and she would certainly not be as lenient about their overbearingness. Especially since she would have the hormones to back up any outburst she might have.

So that was how it was decided that Elliott would come to spend Christmas in New York with them, making Ana slightly nervous about this. She had planned to tell him after the celebration, so he wouldn't be too down for Christmas, but she did plan on changing her whole routine when he would come either.

Christian even proposed for them to leave, so she would be alone with her brother, but she refused. It was what it was, no matter how nervous she felt about it. There was also the fact that she didn't particularly like the fact that she would spring this news on him upon his arrival, without trying to prepare him first. After all, Elliott was someone who strongly believed in his values and traditions.

Five days before Christmas, he arrived in New York, a bit earlier than planned, but Ana had expected that much. Elliott always worried too much. Jack and Christian had decided to go shopping to give Ana some alone time with her brother so she could 'break him the news' as Jack would say.

Elliott arrived shortly after four, with a big cake in his arms that earned him some chastising from Ana, which he quickly brushed off, reminding her that he had to spoil her for three people. She rolled her eyes and hopped her way back to the sofa as she told him to get his stuff to her room and get the cake in the kitchen.

When he came into the living room, he had a marker in hand and looked at her cast, though his happy smile quickly faded when he saw that the cast was as blank as the day it was put on her.

"Beans? Don't you have any friends?"

"I do. But I also happen to be a grown-up with a very important job. And I don't want to look like a fool with silly tags on my already embarrassing cast."

"I promise I won't write anything too stupid." She glared at him, quickly picking up one of her crutches and brandishing it as a weapon,

"And I promise that you will need one of those if you come any closer with that marker of yours."

He raised his hands in peace and sat in front of her, glancing at the TV and shaking his head as he saw that she was watching an old favourite of hers

"Some important grown-up you make. Watching old Disney cartoon."

She stuck her tongue out to him and he reciprocated before she paused it and looked at her brother, deciding to take the bull by the horns.

"So … just so you know, you're going to sleep in the small room."

"Oh? Is the sofa more comfortable for you with your cast and all? I have read somewhere that sleeping with your leg up does help with the pain," he asked worriedly and she shook her head, trying the swifter approach,

"No. It's just that I like it better to sleep with my boyfriends."

"Ah! I'm finally going to meet him. He better be treating you like a queen, right now! I hope that you are milking it."

She smiled, though she noticed that he did not hear the 's' at the end of her word. Or maybe he did, but his subconscious refused to understand it.

So she shrugged, and tried to preempt the situation, "I don't want you to overreact. Please, keep in mind that I am truly happy. In fact, I'm the happiest I have ever been in any relationship in my life. I don't think I could be happier or more fulfilled with anyone else."

It was Elliott's turn to roll his eyes as he shrugged and got comfortable in his armchair, "Come on, Beans. I don't care if you're gay, I just care that you're happy. Though I am a bit surprised, I never thought you liked girls that way."

She couldn't help the small laugh that escaped her lips as she briefly pictured Christian and Jack as girls. Still, there was one crucial thing that she needed, and she let her brother know, "Nah. I like some manly parts too much to be a lesbian."

"TMI!" Elliott screeched with a grimace before refocusing on the topic at hand, "So? Who is he? How did you meet? Tell me all about him? I need to know if I am going to be nice to him or not."

"You know him already."

"Oh?" He thought about it for a moment before he grimaced, "Is it that Taylor guy you told me about? I thought you were just friends. You said he wasn't your type of guy."

"No1 we are just friends. He's actually going through a breakup, right now. He's questioning his whole person. It's not pretty. Maybe I should invite him over since going out clubbing is out of the q—"

"You're stalling, Beans!"

She stopped herself and took a deep breath, aware that he was right and finally she started with half of the truth, "It's Christian."

Elliott stared at her, unbelieving as he pointed out, "Christian is gay."

"Actually, he's bisexual."

"And he is with Jack."

"And so am I."

It seemed that Elliott had forgotten how to breathe. He was looking at his wee sister, fully understanding what she was saying, but before she could try to explain a bit further anything, the front door opened and both Christian and Jack came back home, with their arms heavy with groceries.

Elliott glanced at Ana, anger gleaming in his eyes before he promptly got up and stomped toward her two boyfriends.
