Strange Days at Blake Holsey High
Eighteen
By. Tate Icasa
"We have to have a party." Corinne said as she burst into the science room where the rest of the science club (minus Vaughn) was sitting idly. "Why?" Lucas asked without looking up from his book. "I just found out. Monday is Vaughn's eighteenth birthday." "Vaughn is eighteen?" Marshall asked. Corinne nodded. "Monday." "A party sounds like an excellent idea, Corinne," Professor Z said. "You can set it up here in the lab Saturday." "Cool." Corinne said with a grin. "And remember everyone, it's a surprise, so no one tells Vaughn." ". . .don't have to worry about that." Lucas muttered under his breath, obviously not quietly enough because Marshall smacked him upside the head and Josie favored him with a particularly evil glare. "Today is Thursday, so we have two days to get ready." Josie said when she'd finished glaring at him. She turned her attention to Professor Z. "Can you get principal Durst to have to lunch ladies bake us a cake?" Professor Z shook his head, but before he could reply, Corinne cut in. "I could do it." Josie turned to her, then nodded. "Ok, Corinne backs the cake. The rest of us . . . "
Saturday, an hour before the party
"What are you listening to?" Marshall asked. Lucas glanced up at him and tossed a cd case at his head. Marshall caught it before it hit him and gave Lucas a weird look. "And why? Do you have an obsession with girls named Josie?" "Ha ha," Lucas said, rolling his eyes. "No, it's for an extra credit project." Marshall nodded. "What sort of project?" "The instructions are inside the case." Marshall opened the case and scanned over the instructions. "How the lyrics relate to your life? What kind of project is that?" Lucas decided not to answer. "Whatever. I'm going down to the science lab to help set up for the party." Lucas nodded in his general direction as the door shut. Violet electricity flashed over the cd player, and his eyes rolled up into his head as he slumped forward, unconscious.
