Steven sighs, turning his phone off and leaning back to his seat. He leaves the car window next to him open, appreciating the cold breeze as night settles in. He suppose his recent trip with Wanda is pretty tame, and she seems to be handling things well, despite being in another universe. He wonders if she's already used to it. Did she visit a different one before ending up here? What kind of world did she live in? Was there a Beach City 2.0? How many worlds has she visited?
Wanda tells him some rather vague details of other worlds. There was one where everything was just paint everywhere, even the people. One where everything and everyone are drones, fitted to travel inside a giant machine with their sole purpose of just building around it. He perked up upon hearing an animated universe. He asks if he can turn into a cartoon if he enters that specific one, and Wanda just stares at him, as if he wasn't getting something.
"What? I love cartoons." He tells her, and Wanda just shakes her head.
Steven couldn't imagine seeing other beings bigger than the Diamonds. Sure, their robot ship was bigger than them but Wanda was pretty specific about the scales of other beings spread out across the multiverse.
Idly, his hand found his gem, fingers tracing it just beneath his shirt. Wanda mentions that it's possible to run into another version of yourself and it got him immediately thinking. Was there a version of him who grew up as a Diamond on Homeworld? Perhaps if his mom's rebellion was found out by the other Diamonds. If so, he hopes never to meet that version of him. White, Yellow and Blue weren't exactly…good role models. The sheer thought of him growing up as a conqueror was something he now wishes he never knew was possible. The very idea of it is enough to make him puke.
'Calm down, Steven. There's no reason to turn pink now all of a sudden. Besides, there's plenty of What-ifs that aren't the Diamond route.'
Then he started thinking.
What if the cluster emerged successfully? Was there a world out there where the Earth was just…gone? What if Ruby never got to save Sapphire? It was saddening to think of a world where Garnet didn't exist. What if Pearl actually went too far in protecting his mom during the war and got shattered in the battlefield? What if his bubble didn't activate in time and Connie was crushed by the boulder-
Steven yelps as his skin glowed bright pink once again. He immediately practiced the breathing exercise that his therapist had once taught him. If it didn't work, there was another option where he would slowly count until his skin stops glowing.
'In, and out, Steven. In and out.'
He exhales, panic finally melting down as his skin returns to normal. As fun as learning the multiverse exists, he decides not to overthink more about it and just be satisfied where fate had led him.
Steven waits until sleep takes him. He wonders if there was a world where his Mom never had him and what life would be like to the Crystal Gems if they ever did find out that she was Pink Diamond.
"WAKE UP, SLEEPYHEAD!"
"GUUUH-"
Steven wakes up in a start, hands comically thrown over his head as he slips down from the couch he was sleeping on.
"You naughty, Goober!" The voice laughs at him. "I thought I had you delivering fruit cake to our neighbors. What are you doing lounging on the couch, mister?"
The first thing Steven notices was his skin, and while he's not glowing pink anymore, he realizes for a fraction of a second that it was a lot worse. He looks up and finds everything to be in black and white, not just him. The second thing was the lady in front of him.
He stopped breathing. Frozen on the floor of what he believed to be in a living room.
"You know, that fruit cake won't just grow legs and go to our neighbors by itself, Steven."
A chorus of laughter rang in the air, which made Steven jump in response. He turned around in panic, expecting a crowd of people somewhere but only realizing that he's inside a house, with the only person he feels completely complicated for the longest of time as his only company.
"You should get going before your father decides to deliver it to his stomach instead."
Steven ignores the second wave of laughter erupting out of nowhere and gawks at the person standing before him.
"...MOM?!"
