Daniel looked down at the little box one last time before placing it on his work desk where she should easily spot it. He heard her come flouncing down the hallway and smiled to himself. He couldn't believe how much she had changed – no, how much they had both changed since their first encounter on the Prometheus. As he turned around, he saw her come waltzing into his office.
"There you are Daniel! Where were you? I've been looking everywhere!" Vala said as she spotted him across the room.
"Oh, yeah, I went up to the surface this morning…"
"You went up without me?" she pouted.
"Sorry, you were asleep, and I just had to get a few things from my apartment," he replied with a shrug as he turned back to his work.
"I guess you're forgiven," she said as she walked over to him, but she stopped when she spotted the little black box sitting on his desk.
"What's this," she asked and pointed at it, "I don't remember it being here earlier…" It looked so out of place amongst all the artifacts strewn on the desk.
"It's a gift, for you," Daniel told her, knowing exactly what she was talking about without even turning around. "I got it while I was out. I hope you like it."
Vala picked up the box and looked at him. "Well, if it's a gift from you Daniel, then why wouldn't I like it," she teased playfully then flashed him one of her famous smiles.
Daniel just shrugged in reply and turned to face her. He tried to stay cool and collected, but inside he was a swirl of emotions. He wanted to see her reaction, but at the same time was afraid of her not accepting it. She opened the box and Daniel watched her face go from excitement to wide eyed wonder in a matter of seconds. With a slightly shaking hand, she reached out and touched the sparkling ring that lay in the black velvet. He herd her breath catch in her throat. Finally she tore her wide eyes up and met Daniel's. Then she gazed back down at the ring again and in awe uttered,
"It's so shinny…"
Daniel stared at her for a moment, as if he couldn't believe what she had just said, but then he remembered it was Vala. He dropped his head and let out a sigh, then looked back up at her again.
"Vala, you do know what that is, don't you?"
She looked at him and asked, "It's a beautiful, shinny ring, isn't it?"
He walked over so that he was standing right in front of her. He was only inches away from her. He rested his hands on her shoulders and looked down into her eyes.
"It is a ring," he uttered softly, "but this is a special ring. It's an engagement ring." He paused. She just kept staring at it.
"Vala, I'm trying to ask you to marry me."
She looked up at him. He searched her eyes, to try and read her emotions, but with Vala it was always hard to tell. She bit her lip and looked away, a faraway look in her eyes. She broke into a sly smile and looked up at him again.
"If I say yes, does it mean I get to keep the ring?" She asked, and Daniel hoped she was just teasing him.
"Well, yes," he stated frankly, "although I really hope - "
She cut him off, "Ok, then."
With that she slipped the ring on her left ring finger, planted a kiss on Daniels cheek, and pranced out of the room with the biggest smile anyone had ever seen on her face. Daniel simply stared after her, shook his head and with a smile muttered to himself, "She never ceases to amaze me."
