So this was all very awkward.
The four of us -Robbie, Impa, purah, and I that is- were all sitting around a small table fidgeting.
When we first got here we had at least the distraction of our empty stomachs and our full plates to focus on, but now having all eaten our full there was only the silence.
Robbie broke the awkward air. "Sooooo…. You didn't tell us you were the princess."
"Robbie!" Purah hissed jabbing him in the side.
"And you didn't tell me you were the children of the sheika chief and the child of his advisor." I replied simply.
The awkward air returned.
Oh screw it.
"Ok Let's start over- hi my name is Zelda bosphorus Hyrule the seventy second I like reading, my family, and music."
I smile attempting to make it look cheerful and not show the awkwardness I was feeling.
They collectively blinked at me.
Oh hylia this was-
Impa sat up straighter and lifted her chin, "it's a pleasure to meet you princess Zelda, my name is Impa I like battle training, my toys, and fish- there my favorite animal."
"It's nice to meet you Impa!" I chirped, smiling brilliantly. Thank you sweet sunshine child for going along with my stupid idea.
"Hi I guess? My names robbie, I like my science class, my friends, and making things"
"It's a pleasure to meet you Robbie!" I beamed at him.
"…hi my names purah I like my lessons, math, and froggies there my favorite animal." Ah the wonders of peer pressure, I smiled kindly at her.
"It's very nice to meet you too purah, so why is the frog your favorite animal?"
Ice breakers here we go!
She lit up and started babbling on about how cute frogs were and how they were the best things ever, drawing Robbie and Impa into the discussion to contest her and arguing for their own respective favorite animals.
I can't believe that worked.
MISSION SUCCESS!
———————————————
We were going to be celebrating my birthday soon and I'll admit I am nervous.
It had only been less then a week from when we had the oath ceremony and already there's another thing to prepare for!
And on top of that my birthday is becoming an international conference of a sort. See for the rito your fifth birthday is a big deal because that's when most rito start losing their downie feathers and start growing in there first flight feathers. Because of the cultural significance of such an event for them they decided to send down a delegation for my fifth birthday. Not to be out done the gurdo are ALSO sending a delegation down for my fifth birthday. Both of which are going to be staying at Hyrule castle for a week or two. Luckily the gorons were handling a minor disaster and wouldn't be able to come and the zora aren't all that big on birthdays and aren't interested in attending if everyone else isn't.
It's certainly much better than it could have been... But…
I was practically shaking with how nervous I was!
I had started attending my music lesions every day because before i had know that there were going to be two entire delegations attending i had agreed to play on the lyre again for the party goers and now i couldn't back out without disappointing my parents and the people who had been told i was going to be playing. When I wasn't in my music lessons I was being coached by granny, mom, or dad on how to behave appropriately princessly at the party. While I was still just turning five and nothing was really expected of me yet as it is traditional to START learning at five it was still semi important that I at least appeared to not be an uneducated cretin, especially with word spreading of what an "exceptional prodigy" I was.
So yha,
I'm nervous.
But well what can you do?
Apparently when you're talking about polite society you can talk, walk, speak, AND breath wrong! (i'm just having so much fun with my edicate lessons.)
Who knew I could be doing absolutely everything wrong? TRICK QUESTION I DID!
The party is today and I have never regretted being important politically more than I am now. I had been woken up obscenely early, stuffed in a dress and been slathered in make-up, (again I'm literally five) and was currently having my hair nearly ripped from my scalp by dottie to style it appropriately.
The sun hasn't even risen yet!
And the worst part of this was that i KNEW that this wasn't the outfit i was going to be wearing for the party, no this was just the RECEIVING dress that i'd be wearing for when the gerudo and rito arrived in about two hours apparently if dotties frantic fussing about the lack of time was anything to go by.
I stood outside in the pre dawn mist listening to the crunch of fresh grass under the feet of the welcoming committee milling about nervously, collectively scanning the skies nervously for the delegation of rito to arrive.
My feet were wet from the dew on the grass, I could feel my hair frizzing from the humidity, and I was grumpy and tired.
I couldn't even get my mom or dad to pick me up either because they were in the front of the delegation in their fancy clothes waiting for the first set of guests to arrive so that they could properly greet them.
"Dottie, how much longer are we going to have to wait?" I couldn't help but let a whine creep into my voice. My eyes itched but i couldn't rub them because of my make up, my feet hurt from the stupid sandles i had been stuffed in, and my dress didnt have any pockets SPISIFICLY so i couldnt pull anything out of my hammer space. I was NOT having fun right now. I'm allowed to be a bratty five year old right now, it's my birthday. I can be a brat, as a treat. Happy birthday, me.
"I don't know princess, you'll just have to wait a bit longer." there was an edge starting to creep into her voice and i couldn't blame her she had probably been awake and on her feet far longer then i had at this point. On the other hand it was far too early for petty things like human empathy and understanding so I gave her a stink eye anyway.
"Why couldn't we wait somewhere with chairs?" I griped glaring at a random clump of grass, what I wouldn't give for it to be socially acceptable for me to plop down on the grass like every other kid my age. A damp patch on my butt would be worth it to get off my feet.
Dottie huffed, "that's not up to me princess, we need to be outside to greet the guests when they arrive- look the suns rising why dont you watch the sun rise." i rolled my eyes but never the less looked to the sky.
The earliest rays of light were painting the blades of grass in a pale gold, the sky was slowly shifting from the black of night into a resplendent orange, light refracted off the morning dew to create a million tiny rainbows, the clouds were stained in the shades of early morning brilliance.
When was the last time I really watched the sun rise, I wondered. The anxious turning of my stomach fading into the background as I focused on the celestial dance of light. Surely not since my last life. I was tired, grumpy, and the sounds of the nervous group of adults was grating on my ears but the birds were singing and I was alive.
I was alive and the world was beautiful.
The rito delegation arrived shortly after dawn with much fanfare and commotion. It was a relatively small group with only fifteen adult rito and one little rito making grumpy little faces in a weird front facing baby backpack.
"Zelda, come meet chief Ovi!" my mom called from the middle of the assorted group, and i reluctantly shuffled my way forward, dottie trailing behind me.
I fell into as much of an elegant bow as I could and felt Dottie drop into a deeper one behind me, "it is a pleasure to meet you chief Ovi, I am so pleased that you could make it to my birthday today." I carefully enunciated, making sure that none of my childish lisp or mispronunciations were present.
The tall dark rito smiled pleasantly at me, "the pleasure is all mine princess, I'm so excited to be here for such an important time in your development." It's gonna be one of those conversations isn't it.
"You flatter me." I demurred gently wishing to be back in my bed asleep. It was too early for politics.
"Nonsense the pleasure is all mine." He replied with what seemed to be the rito version of a charming smile on his beak. "May I introduce you to my ward? He is turning five in a few months as well so you are of an age." Huh so that's why there's a kid here. "Of course it would be a pleasure to meet them!" He signaled to a male rito some distance away who nodded and ushered over the cutest kid I have ever seen.
"This is my ward ravali, ravali why don't you greet the princess?" He spoke in a markedly softer tone but I could barely hear him as I attempted to avoid blatantly staring at the little rito.
That is the cutest ball of fluff I have ever seen. Ravali was tiny, basically a ball of fluffy grey feathers and a grumpy little face his little beak all scrunched up in distaste as he preformed a clumsy little bow that would have had granny sighing into her hands if I was the one to preform it.
"Hi my names ravali, I'm four and three quarters, I like archery, flying, and chicken, I don't like singing, dogs, or girly stuff. It's very nice to meet you." I could see the rito chief suppress a sigh behind him at the improper introduction, but really didn't care as I was mentally cooing over the adorable little angry cannibal in front of me.
"It's very nice to meet you ravali!" I gave him my most winning smile, "my names Zelda, I like reading, playing the lyre, and pumpkin pie, I don't like edict lessons, not knowing things, and people treating me like I'm dumb." I resisted the urge to giggle at the sight of my father and the rito chief exchanging exasperated looks over our heads at the impropriety as my mother hid a smile behind her hand.
Baby ravali nodded seriously as if he had decided something very important. "You're ok for a girl, wanna go play?" Oh I was absolutely adopting him, this is now my new little brother. The rito chief sighed out loud at ravalis words and rubbed his forehead. I sent a wicked grin at my mom, "mommy I said hello to the important people, can we go play?"
It's my birthday today. I get to act like a brat.
