Chapter 12: Rampage and Sacrifice

(Viewing room)

The occupants of the theatre were still hugging the youngest member if the group with all their might. Seeing her counterpart seemingly die on screen had really shaken them up, especially Yang, Tai and Qrow.

"All right guys, I think that's enough hugging for now." Ruby managed to squeak out from the tight embrace she was in.

"Just a little bit longer," Yang responded.

Weiss was the first to let go and convinced the others to reluctantly let go of the tiny reaper.

"If you are all done, we can resume the viewing," said Ozpin with a grin on his face as they all sat back down to watch what would happen next.

(on screen)

The Giant was so overcome with sadness that he did not notice the military convoy arriving behind him.

General Ironwood and his men drove up to the area where the Giant had fallen and to their shock and surprise, they saw the massive machine was still alive with no signs of damage at all.

"It's still alive!" shouted one soldier.

"Shoot at it!" Roman yelled out.

(BANG)

The Giant felt one of the shells fired from a tank hit his back and instantly felt his sadness turn to blinding rage. The dent on his head began to vibrate intensely before it expanded, leaving a smooth surface behind.

Instantly memories that were lost returned to the machine. "RUUUAAAAAAA!!!" the Giant screamed in pure hatred and anger as his eyes turned red and his weapons systems activated. As he stood and turned to face the Army behind him his right arm morphed into a massive arm cannon that fired a single round into a tank which was flipped and completely totaled.

Ironwood, Roman and the rest of the soldiers could only stare with their mouths agape at what they had just witnessed.

The Giant's left arm then morphed into a type of claw with glowing green energy behind it. The claw expanded when the energy began flowing between the prongs before firing at another tank and completely erasing it from existence, luckily the soldiers inside had seen the danger and immediately jumped out in time.

The Giant then went through another transformation, his head sunk into his body and a transparent dome covered it for protection. His chest opened to reveal what looked like a cannon in the center with glowing green lights encircling it and finally three tentacle like cannons emerged from the Giants back which wasted no time to begin shooting energy blasts at the surrounding army.

"Retreat! Retreat!" Ironwood ordered his men as his driver quickly turned the jeep around and fled in the opposite direction.

"Let's get out of here!" screamed Roman in absolute fear.

Seeing his targets fleeing, the Giant began to pursue while taking zero damage from the rounds that were fired at him. They killed his best friend and treated him like he was a weapon, a gun. Well he was going to show them exactly what a gun like him could do.

Back at the crash sight Summer climbed out of her truck and nearly collapsed in despair when she saw her daughters unmoving form in the snow.

"RUBY!" She screamed and sprinted towards her child. Cradling her head in her arms Summer let out a breath of relief when she felt a pulse.

"She's unconscious, but she's ok," said Tai who had arrived a few seconds behind her. "Let's get her in the car."

Nodding, Summer gently lifted Ruby off the ground and climbed in the passenger seat, hold her child close to her while Taiyang put his bike at the back of the truck before climbing in the drivers seat and began to head back to town to find the hospital.

(With the Army)

"Drive dammit drive!"

"Step on it!"

"It's gaining on us!"

"Faster! Faster! Faster! Hurry!"

These were shouts of the soldiers who were fleeing for their lives from the menacing machine who was gaining on them while firing its weapons at them.

In back of the fleeing jeep General Ironwood ejected the clip from his handgun and loaded a fresh one before shooting at the giant but not even a scratch was made. The General's jeep avoided the row of tanks as they entered the town, he hoped the heavy artillery from the many tanks would at least damage the machine but his hopes were crushed when the disk on the giants arm cannon began rotating and two needle like limbs sprang out and made contact with the spinning disk. Sparks shot from the disk and destroyed four tanks the moment they made contact.

The General grabbed a radio from a soldier who was frozen in fear and contacted the battleship offshore. "All battleships fire at the robot!" he ordered desperately. "Now! Dammit now!" he shouted as the giant got closer to his position.

The rampaging giant felt the impacts from the battleship's massive weapons on his back, but no damage was sustained. Turning, he saw the ship near the bay and began marching towards the battleship with the intent to completely destroy it.

(Off screen)

"By the brothers, he's unstoppable." Ironwood said to himself in complete shock, a feeling shared by everyone else.

They all knew that the Giant could cause mass destruction, the laser eyes was a big giveaway. But they never expected this. It's as the saying goes, push a good person too far and they will push back.

"Such destructive power, can anything stop him now?" Glynda asked herself, she glanced at her students and as expected they were staring at the screen with a mixture of shock, fear and sadness.

Ruby couldn't believe what she was seeing, her 'others' massive but gentle Giant had transformed into an unstoppable killing machine. She never could have imagined the complete transformation that she was witnessing. She then noticed Penny was having just a hard time processing this as she was.

"Penny, are you okay?" Ruby asked and placed her hand on the other girl's shoulder. The robot girl jumped slightly at the contact and looked at her first friend in surprise.

"I-I'm ok," she stammered. "It's just…seeing this," she gestured to the rampaging giant on screen, "makes me think of what I could become in the future…" she muttered lowly with her head bowed.

Ruby gasped. "Penny you could never-

"It's a possibility Ruby!" Penny cut her off. "Look at the Giant, your counterpart thought he was harmless and now he's turned into an unstoppable machine bent on destruction because he thinks you're dead. What if that happens to you and I lose myself? What if-

This time it was Ruby who cut her off by hugging tightly. "Penny, that won't happen. You're one of the sweetest and kindest people I've ever met, there's not an evil bone uuh part in your body and if by some chance you lose yourself and start rampaging, I'll do whatever it takes to save you."

"Y-you mean it?" Penny asked.

"Always," was the immediate response.

The snap of a scroll camera going off caught the hugging pair's attention. Looking up they saw everyone in the theatre looking at them with smiles on their faces while Ethan was saving the picture, he took of them.

"Oh, don't mind me, please continue to hug your girlfriend Ruby, it looks like you both are enjoying it." Teased their host.

Ruby's blush lit up her entire face as she tried to form sentences of denial, but all her words came out scrambled. Penny just looked confused at her friend's reaction.

"What's the matter Ruby? We are girlfriend's, aren't we? You're a girl and my friend, what's the problem?" she asked innocently which made Ruby nearly pass out with embarrassment while Yang and Nora grinned maniacally at the teasing material in front of them.

Blake just sighed, "Let's get back to watching please, you can tease them later."

(On screen)

"Nothing can stop this thing; we've hit it with everything we've got!" shouted Ironwood.

"Not everything general, the bomb." Roman proposed. The General actually paused and stared at Roman with a look that said, 'are you out of your mind!?' Roman continued, "The Nautilus isn't far offshore."

"You scare me Torchwick. You want us to bomb ourselves in order to kill it?!" he demanded in disbelief.

Roman quickly began to explain, "The giant seems to follow whatever attacks it. We can lure it away from the town, then destroy it."

The General began to think it over, it actually sounded like a solid plan. Making up his mind, he addressed one of his soldiers. "Radio the Nautilus, tell target the robot and await my command."

(Nautilus control room)

"This is Nautilus. What's the giant's current position?" the Operator asked on the radio before relaying the coordinates. "by 44.50177 degrees north. Locked and loaded." He said as the coordinates where inputted and the launch button lit up, waiting to be pushed.

(Off screen)

"It won't work, they can't have a weapon that could beat him, right?" asked Jaune.

"I hope not," replied Pyrrha. "Despite his rampage, he's just angry and sad, he doesn't know Ruby survived the fall.

"I guess we'll just have to wait and see," said Ren while holding Nora.

(On screen)

Summer was gently cradling her daughter in her lap a Tai drove them into town to get to the hospital. "Oh, my baby I'm so sorry," she said while rubbing Ruby's hair through her fingers.

-"Stop the car."

-"Honey, you're all right!" Summer said in relief and happiness as Ruby sat up suddenly.

"Go back! We've gotta help him!" ordered the silver eyed girl.

Tai was not complying, "Are you crazy? You're lucky to be alive. We're taking you to the hospital." He firmly said and ignored the glare Ruby was sending him, when suddenly he hit the brakes to avoid colliding with a soldier at a roadblock that was set up.

"Everyone out of the car! We're evacuating the area!" ordered the soldier.

Reluctantly Tai and Summer climbed out of the car. "What are you doing? We have to get this girl to a hospital." Tai tried to explain as he was being dragged away.

"What girl?" asked the soldier as he looked into a now empty truck.

Seeing no one inside, Tai looked to where the giant was standing and sure enough a tiny figure in red was sprinting towards the massive machine.

"RUBY!" He shouted but was held back from running to her by the soldiers.

"RUBY, NO!" Summer shouted as well and just like Taiyang was held back.

(Off screen)

"You dolt! No matter what universe you still run headfirst into dangerous situations!" scolded Weiss, but you could year the concern in her voice as she watched her partners on screen version run toward the giant that was in attack mode.

"Aw I knew you cared about me Weiss." Ruby said with a big grin on her face.

Weiss sputtered with a small but noticeable blush, "O-of course I care you dolt! You're my partner and friend, even if I don't always show it, you're still important to me." She finished with a huff, but you could see a small smile on her face.

(On screen)

The attacking giant stood at the shoreline and began charging his energy cannon on his chest. A ball of glowing green energy began forming until it was the size tow basketballs. Locking his eyes on the battleship in the water, the giant was about fire when a voice began yelling at his feet.

"NO! STOOPPP!"

Glancing down just as the energy ball fired, the destructive blast just missed its target and flew out to sea where it exploded in massive dome of energy that illuminated the whole town.

Back in town everyone was shocked into silence at the sheer destructive power a single blast of the giant's canon could create. One blast would surely wipe out the town with no problem.

"This is General Ironwood. Ready the attack and prepare to the fallback position." He ordered on his radio.

Summer paled and tried to lunge at the General but was held back. "No! Stop! My daughter is out there!" she cried desperately, making the General look towards the shoreline in worry as he thought the child was dead according to Roman.

At the shoreline Ruby was just as shocked by the massive blast but was snapped out of her trance by the massive barrel being pointed at her.

"No wait, it's me! Ruby, remember!?" she desperately asked as the barrel began lighting up in preparation to shoot. "It's bad to kill, guns kill. And you don't have to be a gun. You are who you choose to be. You choose." The red caped girl finished and closed her silver eyes to await her fate.

Slowly the Giant's eyes turned back from their raged filled crimson and back into its normal white.

"Ruby?"

Opening her eyes Ruby saw the weapons began to retract and in a few seconds her friend was no longer in attack mode and was once again in his normal appearance.

Once his weapons were all gone the Giant seemed to begin have a panic attack as the full weight of what he just did and nearly did hit all at once.

"It's ok, it's ok." Ruby soothed him. We gotta show them you're good." The girl told her friend who looked back at the town with determination.

(Off screen)

"Woohoo! She did it!" cheered Nora wildly while hugging her boyfriend tightly. "Ruby Rose, the Giant whisperer! All robots beware her power!" The hyper ginger yelled, much to everyone's amusement.

Giggling to herself, Ruby turned back to Penny. "What did I tell you, no matter what happened, I'll always try and save my friends, even from themselves." She said to her robotic friend who smiled and nodded gratefully.

(On screen)

"Nautilus to Ironwood. Missile armed and ready." Came the operators voice through the General's radio, but he was not listening due to Taiyang trying to explain that the Giant was not an enemy.

"What are you saying, he's friendly?" he asked incredulously.

"Yes!" confirmed the blonde man. "Attacking him triggers a defense mechanism.

"Don't listen! Destroy the monster while we still have a chance!" Roman interjected angrily and was still angry at being tricked by the junkyard owner and was not about to lose his chance to get back at him.

"You shoot and the whole thing starts over again!" countered Tai who couldn't believe Roman was still against him.

(boom)

(boom)

(boom)

The sound of massive footsteps approaching silenced everyone as the soldiers pointed their rifles at the fog that had appeared and was hiding the approaching machine.

"Stop it now! Our future is at stake!" shouted Roman with increasing fear.

"Orders sir?" asked a soldier nervously as the footsteps got closer and closer.

"Which is why you've got to stop!" ordered Tai as firmly as he could.

Now the Giant was fully in view of the soldiers who were tensing in preparation for another firefight. "It's getting closer! Orders sir?!"

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" shouted Ruby from the palms of the Giants hands.

"RUBY!" Yelled Summer.

"Hold your fire!" Ironwood quickly ordered when seeing a civilian in harms way. "The girls alive!" he asked in disbelief.

"It's a trick! Launch the missile!" Roman said fearfully.

"Are you mad Torchwick?" The General rhetorically asked as he pulled out his radio. "Ironwood to Nautilus. Come in Nautilus." He called, not noticing Roman's face pale as he was being given a death glare by the Giant.

"Nautilus standing by."

Before Ironwood could say anything, his radio was grabbed by the paranoid Torchwick who shouted as loud as he could.

"Launch the missile now!!!"

As soon as he heard the order, the operator on the Nautilus hit the launch button, sending the missile straight up and out the submarine and into the sky, where it would soon descend and destroy its target.

Ironwood angrily grabbed Roman by the collars and brough his face an inch away from his own.

"That missile is targeted to the Giants current position. WHERE'S THE GIANT TORCHWICK!!??" He angrily shouted at the man who was about to reply when what he actually just did sunk in, the giant was in town where everyone including him was at the moment.

(Off screen)

"That no good bastard! He just killed everyone in that town!" Glynda exclaimed with furry. "They need to evacuate as fast as possible or that missile will wipe them clean off the map."

Ironwood nodded, "They will, I'm sure the towns people have prepared for a scenario like this-

"I'm afraid it won't matter if they evacuate," said Ethan.

Yang stood up angrily with her eyes turning red, "What do mean it won't matter!? Those people need to get away from the blast zone quickly."

"Do you mean that the bomb is so strong it would kill everyone no matter how far they evacuated?" asked Blake while shaking.

"Precisely that," Ethan confirmed, making them all pale in horror. "Remember that clip I showed you of the bombing of Hiroshima?"

Everyone nodded while trying not to think of the horrific scene and aftermath. "Well this is the same type of missile, a nuclear warhead. The destructive power will consume everything in its wake."

"So…there's nothing they can do?" asked Qrow after a moment of deafening silence. "We're just gonna sit here watch them all die, aren't we?" he stated, and was close to having a mental breakdown at the though of seeing his niece and teammate die.

"I didn't say that, and before you ask, I won't spoil, just watch and see."

(On screen)

"We can duck and cover," Roman desperately suggested. "There's a fallout shelter right there-

"There's no way to survive this you IDIOT!" Ironwood yelled and realization finally hit the orange haired man.

"You mean we're all going - -

"To die Torwchwick, for our country." Finished Ironwood.

"Screw our country! I want to live!" Roman exclaimed before throwing a soldier from his jeep and began to drive away but was stopped by the Giants massive hand in the road which he crashed into.

"Hold him men," Ordered the General. "Make sure he stays here like a good soldier.

(RIIIIINNNNNGGGG)

The sound of the siren made everyone gasp in fear while the Giant was confused.

"The missile," said Ruby after she climbed down from the Giants hand and hugged her mother. "When it comes down….everyone will die." She explained softly in a defeated tone, as if she had already accepted what was about to happen.

"There it is!" said one of the townsfolk who pointed to the sky at the missile which was climbing higher and higher into the sky. Soon everyone began to run as fast as they could to get their family members and loved ones and hopefully get away in time.

Meanwhile the Giant was staring at everyone as they ran around and panicked, and he knew it was all his fault, if he hadn't lost himself and attacked then none of this would have happened. Looking up at the ascending bomb, he knew there was only one thing he could do to fix this, to save everyone.

(Off screen)

"He's going sacrifice himself, isn't he?" Stated Ruby while trying not to cry, she knew exactly what the Giant was thinking, because it's exactly what she would have done.

"Yang nodded, "Yeah, yeah he is." She said and brought her sister into her arms while fighting back tears of her own.

(On screen)

"Shouldn't we get to a shelter?" asked Summer while holding Ruby close to her.

Tai shook his head, "It wouldn't matter."

"I fix."

Breaking away from her mother, Ruby glanced at her robot friend who was looking towards the sky.

"Giant?"

Looking down, the Giant crouched down to his first and best friend and put his finger on her forehead.

"Ruby. You stay. I go."

Immediately understanding, Ruby looked down with tears in her eyes. Giant gently lifted her chin and she looked him in the eyes.

"No following." He said while wagging his finger back and forth.

Pulling his arm back even as Ruby tried to hold on, the Iron Giant took three steps back and looked up to the sky.

"I love you." Ruby said finally.

With that, the Giant bent his knees before leaping and instantly activated his foot thrusters, taking him into the sky in a matter of seconds. He flew through the clouds with eyes narrowed with determination, with his speed he easily caught up to the missile just as it began its descent to the ground.

"You are who you choose to be." Ruby's words rang in the Giants head. Seeing the approaching missile, he closed his eyes and only said one name.

"Superman."

(BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM)

The explosion lit up the sky as it were a second sun, and everyone on the ground had to shield their eyes. Once it died down and everyone realized they were still alive, they began cheering and celebrating while a few soldiers saluted through their helmets and saluted the sky.

"Let's go home," said Ironwood after taking his hat off in respect and began walking back to his jeep. He glanced at Ruby and saw she was hugging her mother and quietly crying in sadness before giving one last look to the sky, where the glow from the explosion was still present.

(Screen darkens)

The students were all quietly sobbing in their seats and hugging each other for emotional support. Seeing the sacrifice he made was heartbreaking but they knew it was the only way to save everyone.

Even the adults were affected, Ozpin raised his coffee mug, Ironwood and Winter saluted in respect while Qrow and Tai raised their flasks.

The Iron Giant might have been a machine, but in that moment he was more human than anyone else and not just that, he was also… a hero.

A/N: sob…sob…sob… Iron Giant, you were an amazing Superman. I literally teared up and started crying while writing the sacrifice scene, no matter how many time I watch it I still get emotional. This was supposed to be a short chapter but I decided to spoil you all as thanks for being such awesome people and supporting and liking my stories.

Next chapter will be the final one for Iron Giant where our cast will get a nice surprise and I'll announce which universe they'll be watching next.

So see you next time, stay safe and stay awesome. Ja Ne!
