UPDATE 25.07.2021 - Fic summary updated.
WARNING: The chapter is rather angsty and there's a lot of negative thinking, including references to death. If you are having a bad day or not feeling at your best, I recommend reading this chapter from the first horizontal line onwards. Don't want to trigger anyone's negative thinking, but if you're fine with angst, go for it, there's no deaths or gore, some violence though, it's just a lot of intense angst in my opinion. Read at your own risk. Thank you for your understanding.
Chapter 6: Nightmares from the past
She heard Amidamaru scream, then time seemed to move almost in slow motion.
She watched with horror how his usual sweet face turned into a malicious frown and his signature smile into a twisted smirk, promising trouble. His beautiful brown eyes darkened and his gaze looked so far from his usual one, he almost felt like a stranger. His serene aura became dark and tainted, the air around increasingly tight.
His hand raised at his neck level and brought along with it a sharp pocket knife, the blade shining in the moonlight. The ghost possessed boy continued to grin evilly as he announced his intention of getting rid of the naive owner of the body who placed his innocent trust into him, so he can finally carry out his revenge on Amidamaru.
'No. He didn't…' She thought terrified. The cold blade touched the neck, dangerously close to breaking it. "No." She said quietly, her voice below a whisper and feeling overcome by the sensation of suffocation, her body frozen in place. She felt such intense pain that her tears weren't even falling.
Shortly after, her knees gave in and she found herself falling on them on the hard ground, her whole body shuddering both from the sudden fall as well as from the shocking image in front of her. She had trusted him to handle the evil spirit…Yet seeing him like this now, totally possessed and completely helpless and out of her reach to save him, rattled her in a way she couldn't imagine. How could she let him, her innocent Yoh got possessed by that evil dirty spirit? Why did she believe in his naive good thoughts of saving the troubled spirit?
The guilt was too much to bear for her - she couldn't breathe, she couldn't talk and her heart and head hurt. She felt like screaming and wanted to try and do something, ran for him, turn on her powers, but she couldn't as she felt paralyzed physically and mentally in place, the image in front of her too much to bear. She felt she was choking, her heart beating at an alarming rate from the overwhelming fear.
She had to distract herself or she was sure she'll die before him at this rate. She needed to shift the blame so she could at least breathe. She needed to somehow fight this. Yoh needed her, maybe she could still save him…or at least she could then torture that spirit for the rest of her days to somehow ease the pain and make his life a living hell. But for that she needed to stay alive and to think of something, anything else.
She concentrated on summoning her anger and then direct it at the person responsible for the spirit there in the first place - Manta. That Ryu was useless and she barely knew him, she couldn't have channelled the same intensity of feelings from placing the blame on him, but Manta was the perfect candidate.
Anna tried forming a coherent threatening typical 'her sentence', but instead, she felt her face get wet from tears that finally fell and her worrying thoughts were overcome by a sudden hopeful thought. Maybe he would recognize her voice, just maybe that would bring him back or at least remind him of his stupid saviour mission. Or of her…
"That idiot actually gave him control. I thought he'd dominate Togakeroh's soul when they integrated…" She said to Yoh, yet it felt as if she wasn't speaking to anyone in particular, but Manta heard her.
No reaction. The blade stayed still dangerously close to his neck, threatening to sever his life along with hers - would she actually be able to go on without him, the only person who gave her a reason to go on? The only one who made this lonely world liveable and less lonely by filling it with his warmth and love for her and by showing her how much she's worth in his own lonely world?
'Don't leave me, please.' Her thoughts begged him.
She realized in great horror that the fear now seemed even greater than back then when he saved her. And that was because now she knew more than ever that he loved her and she loved him and that their lives would be forever connected. The promise of a beautiful happy future together was no longer a distant childish dream, but something she was able to clearly see those days.
But now this was threatening it and the shaman competition hadn't even begun yet…Of course she was aware he was throwing himself in a dead-life tournament, but it was one thing to acknowledge that and say you'll trust he'll make it in one piece and another to watch it actually happen in front of your eyes before and realize that's not even the dangerous competition you've been preparing yourself for. This was out of their hands, unexpected, UNFAIR. And the object and culprit of this event DARED to address her:
"What do you mean?"
"With Yoh's strength, he doesn't have to let that sickly ghost control him" She heard her distant voice say slightly shaken from the tears that continued to fall freely. The pain didn't change either, it only grew harder with every word she got out or heard from Manta. He was just making it worse.
"Then Yoh-kun let him take control?! Why?" Manta asked panicked, yet Anna only heard it as something annoying and piercing for her ears as if it was just trying to make her suffer more by echoing her fears and dreadful thoughts.
"I don't know, you IDIOT!" She said raising her voice to overcome a sob threatening to come out. Why did it hurt so much? Could she bear the pain after?
She was grateful the ghost seemed frozen in place, not taking any more steps towards doing more harm to her Yoh which, however, didn't make her feel more relieved but more anxious. Was her mind playing her tricks? Did it already happen and she's in some kind of shock? Whatever it was she was certain the image with the menacing smirking Yoh, with the face twisted in a sickening evil way and emanating an evil aura will be imprinted on her eyes for a long time from now and will haunt her when she'll feel at her lowest.
"If Yoh dies" a sob threatened to escape once again at saying that aloud, but she continued, finally managing to say in her threatening voice reserved just for terrifying Manta "it's all your FAULT." The little boy felt a cold shiver run through his body despite the tense situation and the fear for his friend and a new terror rose at realizing that he might be next after Tokageroh. He always felt as if Anna was trying to slash him with her words.
He actually didn't doubt that, since the moment he learnt who it was and what role she had in Yoh's life, she tried to kill him with the words or eyes more than once or twice. And he did feel himself die and come back to life more than once in her presence. Well of course, he always felt like 'coming back to life' because he wanted to be there for Yoh, for his friend, yet she made sure to torture him again and AGAIN with words, threats and violence. He learnt to live with it and stand out for Yoh the way he stood up for him so many times. That's what friends are for, right? In addition, part of him was seriously afraid she'll kill him accidentally with one of her beatings, if the training wouldn't go first to him, so he had to be there for Yoh to at least call an ambulance or save him somehow.
But although he had all those plans and scenarios planned out for Anna, Manta didn't quite plan for anything else despite knowing Yoh's a shaman and he has a dangerous path ahead. He trusted 'that things will work out' as Yoh always said, yet now he felt helpless and guilty. He did blame himself and Anna's words didn't help, but he just hoped things will somehow change and Yoh will overcome this and raise up like he did before with Ren and Pylong. Right?
His train of thoughts was however interrupted by the so-called wicked girl in front of him who was now sobbing with her palms pressed to her face and her whole body convulsing. And that was also shocking because he was certain she was devoid of any compassioned feelings. Could she actually care for Yoh? 'Could all her cold appearance be just a façade?' The quick thought crossed Manta's mind, but the current overwhelming situation brought him so many other emotions that he couldn't concentrate further on this rather random thought.
Anna couldn't take it, after she got the last words out directed at Manta, the pain took over and she felt herself sobbing. She pressed her palms to her eyes, scared of the image in front of her which only showed her the perspective of a lonely future ahead. She felt breathless and choking from her own sobs, all hope of saving him or attempting to do something lost. 'Why Yoh, why would you do this to you? To me? To US, IDIOT?!' She screamed internally.
She slightly moved one finger aside so she could take one last look at him. And for a second, a short second she saw his characteristic smile, his angelic face and their eyes seemed to make eye contact. But then all disappeared as if it was her imagination and the evil appearance was back.
"I warned you I'll kill him." The spirit said his grin widening malicious as if he was making a joke. And then he pressed the blade.
"YOOOOOOOOH." Anna screamed, but her voice choked in sobs. She coughed violently and her eyes search frantically, but only saw blurred darkness initially, before they adjusted to the dim light coming from outside. She was searching for Yoh, but he wasn't there, HE WASN'T THERE and panic surged.
She tried to clean her tears with her fists, angry and upset and still very shaken. She tried to clear her throat by taking in big breaths of air, but she felt as if she was choking because she was still sobbing. She felt suffocated and threw everything aside before crawling out of her bed in a corner and raised her knees and put her arms around them. Was it a dream? Was it real? Was Yoh truly dead?
"Of course he's dead, you killed him with your weakness. You let him die because you didn't go save him. YOU. DIDN'T. EVEN. TRY." A malicious voice said and Anna raised her face in terror in time to see a medium-sized oni watching her with his black devoid eyes.
He lunged at her, slapping her cheek with his ugly sharp long nails before she had a chance to even react or make a sound. She had been frozen in place, as her eyes met her childhood nightmares coming back to life to haunt her again.
She fell on the floor, thrown by the blow in the middle of the room, breathing heavily from the panic, her check red and blood falling from a small scratch caused by the slap. The oni placed himself in front of the sliding door and laughed mincingly at her, obviously enjoying her pain and hurt.
Anna, however, finally started to come back to reality, the slap somehow knocking some sense into her. She quickly understood that she was in her room and that she had a dream about the events that happened earlier that night and her worries and fears had managed to twists the ending into something horrible. As a result, all her negative thoughts from her sleep must have created an oni, despite her feeling not having her reishi on. Or did she? Her head hurt too much and her mind was a swirl of overflowing emotions to fully acknowledge having the power on or not.
And she understood another thing that gave her enough power to stand up and glare back with anger at the demon. Yoh should be ALIVE.
Yoh was in the next room and he was there for her. She will protect Yoh this time from this oni. She was sure the demon will use anything from hurting her to hurting the others around her to make her feel negative emotions so he can feed on them, drain her and grow. However, she won't fail Yoh again, not after just happened earlier that evening. She won't let either Yoh, or herself fall into the hands of another evil spirit.
Body shaking, tears still falling, head hurting from the overwhelming negative emotions, cheek bleeding slightly and fear still creeping in, Anna looked the oni in the eyes with her 'killing Manta' gaze before she turned on her heels, opened the balcony door and dashed towards Yoh's room.
Yoh was exhausted. He was the living form of the definition of exhaustion. After being united with Amidamaru and then also letting himself possessed, he felt so drained and let himself fall into a deep slumber. Amidamaru could guard him and he also had Anna next door as a second measure. She definitely wouldn't let anything past her.
Speaking of Anna, he knew he should have talked to her. He saw her crying, he knew she'd been hurt because of him letting himself possessed, but because everyone was around, he saw her brushing it off nonchalantly, yet characteristically. He should have talked to her, but he just fell asleep after he showed Manta and Ryu where to sleep. And Anna also just closed herself in her room saying she was going to bed. However, part of him knew he should have tried harder because he felt her being troubled, he knew she was in pain….If only he wasn't that drained himself…
Yoh suddenly felt something that made his body awaken a bit and he opened his eyes blinking sleepily. Did he hear someone? Could it be Anna? Or just his thoughts still haunting him about him being a selfish fiancée who let the poor girl with her own emotions overnight? It was probably very late at night, outside was still rather dark.
His head hurt from tiredness and overthinking, staying for so long in spirit union and waking up too early. He thought initially it was his head ringing, but then he actually heard something.
"Yoh-dono?" Amidamaru enquired concerned, suddenly appearing next to him.
"Can you please check, Amidamaru?" Yoh murmured sleepy trying to wake himself up, yet his eyes seemed to close back. If it weren't for the nagging worrying feeling, he would have definitely been back to sleeping and salivating by now.
"Yes, I feel an evil aura coming from Anna's room that's not hers, I'm afraid Yoh-dono…" Amidamaru said real concern crossing his features.
"WHAT?" Yoh stood up awaken from the news.
But before he had a chance to do or say more, the door to his balcony opened and Anna dashed in, jumped on him knocking him on the floor and embraced him for barely a second before standing up and looking around for something. Yoh still dazed and rather sleepy hardly had a chance to say anything before he saw this ugly looking oni entering his room. Maybe he was still sleeping? Was this a dream or some kind of side effects from letting himself being possessed?
Amidamaru's eyes grew to saucepan sizes.
"Where's the damn sword, Yoh?!" Anna asked desperately looking for it around.
"There!" Amidamaru pointed to one of the corners of the room at a pile of clothes, aware that Yoh's sleepy form is still processing the situation.
Anna gave Yoh a quick irritated 'we'll talk about this some other time' look before she dug in the pile of clothes, grabbed the sword, unsheathed it and stood in front of him protectively ready to fight.
"Huh? What's happening?" Yoh asked standing up next to Anna and trying to catch up, Amidamaru close to him on high alert.
The oni in the meantime seemed to enjoy the show and only stared at them with his black eyes, especially focusing on Anna's form. He laughed evilly upon seeing her with the sword.
Yoh went in spirit unity with Amidamaru.
"Anna, WHAT IS HAPPENING?!" Yoh insisted trying to move closer to her, but her hand pushed him back.
"Stay there, I can handle this." She hissed taking a step forward.
"This is really fun, I guess I'll just 'play around' with him first before getting back to you, I am sure you will enjoy that." The oni laughed relishing in watching Anna's trembling form and feeling empowered by her anger.
"Anna, you need to calm down and let me handle this, you're only giving him what he wants." Yoh said as realization finally hit him. Spirit union with Amidamaru also 'forced' his body to awaken and become aware of the surroundings.
He didn't know yet how, but he assumed Anna had somehow managed to summon this oni and now he was feeding on her negative emotions. It was Osorezen all over again, yet this time, Yoh believed they had the upper card. If only he could knock some sense into Anna.
Upon taking a closer look at her, he realized she was shaking and crying. He also gasped upon seeing blood on her left cheek, seemingly falling from a light scratch. Her eyes were wide open, looking determined, yet nervous, but something about them made Yoh wonder if she was even awake and fully aware of the situation or just too overwhelmed by her power to focus on more than one thing at a time. And right now it seemed her attention was fully on protecting and saving him.
He bent to grab the sword's sheath when he saw with the corner of his eye the oni lounging for him. He easily jumped away, grabbing it with him ready to strike back when he saw something flying through the room and hitting the wall with a thud before falling on the ground followed by a metallic sound. The oni's laughed increased.
Yoh's eyes widen in realization, heart stopped and he couldn't breathe, his hands slightly trembling. He felt panic surge like that day he thought he lost her, yet this time he could clearly see it wasn't a false alarm. The girl had jumped in front of him to attack and the oni hit her.
"Ann…ANNA!" He shouted breathless running at her. It hurt him to see her like that, lying lifeless on the floor.
"She's alive, can't kill the source of my powers now, can I? Poor thing tried to scratch me, she's sure one to keep." The oni winked conspiratorially and continued laughing as he was watching some really entertaining comedy.
Yoh barely reached her when he saw her getting up and grabbing the sword, ready to lounge again, her whole body trembling from anger.
"At this rate, I'll kill him before you even notice with those weak fighting skills of yours." The oni mocked her expecting another outburst of negative emotions which didn't disappoint as she stopped in her tracks shook by his words, yet still determined to strike again.
Anna couldn't stop now, she couldn't lose or otherwise she'll lose Yoh, her dazed mind told her. On top of that, her emotions were a mess and were clouding her judgement, so she just lounged again blindly at the oni with the sword. However, she felt something caught her from behind and she lost balance and her shaky hands dropped the sword.
"Anna, snap out of it!" Yoh said and turned her around trying to make eye contact while slightly shaking her body with his hands on her shoulders. He kept one eye in the oni's direction who watched them still enjoying the show, delight obvious on his face from their pain.
" .OF. IT!" Yoh emphasized each word by shaking her. "Let me handle the oni, you focus on your emotions, just shut them off or focus on anything else than negativity, like us, games, dates, me, anything else, please!" Yoh pleaded.
"Yoh…?" She asked blinking and trying to focus on his words.
"Yes, yes!" Yoh said, but then he pushed their bodies on the side, dodging just in time a blow from the oni.
"No, no, I can't let you reach her, then all the fun would go and I'm here for the long run." The demon smirked.
"That's not up to you, that's up to Anna and she's strong enough to shut your ugly mouth off if she wants." Yoh replied confidently.
He had a hand around Anna, holding her close while the other locked around the sword he grabbed.
Anna seemed to finally properly acknowledge Yoh. She grabbed on his sleeping yukata and closed her eyes trying to listen to his heartbeat, a sound that calmed her because it reminded her of him being alive.
"You're alive…" She whispered more to herself than to him.
Registering her gesture, Yoh got an idea. He held onto her while he dodged them from another blow. The oni was growing impatient as he realized the girl's mood was slightly improving.
"No, he's not, he'll die before your eyes little girl." The oni threatened, but his voice quivered this time because Anna didn't react as he wished. She just grabbed harder on Yoh and she wished that this was all indeed some bad dream that she couldn't snap out of it although she wished.
All her emotions were twisting around her head, her reishi now fully on and thoughts were mixed in her mind, making it hard to focus on anyone or anything. So she closed her eyes and just tried to focus on that fast heartbeat, yet the noise around the room and from her head made it so hard. But then she felt something gently placed on her head.
"Here, you can have them for now." She rose her eyes to meet Yoh's gentle kind look with his big smile. His hands were around her head arranging his signature orange headphones. He pressed something and suddenly the music started.
"Focus on this till you feel better enough to shut off your powers. I'll keep him busy, OK?" Yoh asked moving his hands from the headphones to her shoulders.
Anna nodded blushing, the music already starting to make her thoughts less clear, helping her focus on the melody instead.
"NOOOO, I'LL KILL HIM, I'LL KILL HIM!" The oni screamed.
She felt Yoh hold her and jump on the side with them as the oni stroke again, this time full of anger, all excitement and fun gone from his face.
"I can handle myself, you trained me for that, so don't' worry, focus on your strength so we can finish him off as soon as possible." Yoh grinned confidently and placed a quick kiss on her forehead for good measure.
That seemed to really make Anna more aware of her surroundings. She blinked a couple of times, face red and eyes watching Yoh as he tried to battle the oni by placing himself between her and him. She was defending her. No, she was supposed to defend him. She came to help, how did she end up being the one saved again? No, she won't let him be the savior this time.
Her tears ceased to fall and her body finally stopped shaking. Determined and gritting her teeth, Anna focused on the lyrics of the song playing although she didn't quite like listening to Bob and forced her powers to just shut off. However, it seemed as if the oni's presence stopped her from doing so, so she tried even harder. She got up, eyes burning, hands pressed on the headphones trying to avoid listening to anything else than the music.
She saw Yoh hitting the wall close to her and she felt her hands go into fists. No, she won't panic anymore and get scared. She was no longer that little scared hateful 10-year-old girl who didn't have anyone to really care for her despite who she was. Now she had someone, now she was stronger and right now she was angry. She had ENOUGH of people throwing Yoh around the way they wanted and she had enough of her powers messing up with herself. She was Anna the Itako and no one, even herself, will overcome her.
She walked in front of Yoh with confidence and looked shortly at him to see he was fine before she gave him a reassuring look. Then she focused on the oni. He will pay for hurting her and touching Yoh.
Upon seeing her, the oni seemed confused about whether to make fun of her or hit her. But he didn't get a chance to decide because she lunged at him and punched him in the face. Then she looked at him with eyes burning from determination and power. The objects in the room started to shake and the oni felt a burning electrifying sensation across his skin, that started to hurt more and more. Anna's hair seemed to slightly raise at the ends from the power emanating from her.
"Anna!" She heard Yoh gasp in astonishment from behind her.
The tables seemed to finally turn, with the oni recoiling in fear. She smirked and chanted, her eyes becoming devoid for a second before the golden orbs glowed with her power.
"Disappear."
The oni frozen in place by her power felt himself being absorbed by the air itself. The moment he disappeared, everything in the room stopped shaking and Anna's power stopped suddenly.
"I did it Yoh, I DID IT, I saved you!" Anna said smirking, yet genuinely happy.
"You did!" Yoh said coming next to her beaming, his spirit union with Amidamaru now finished.
"Yes, of course I did, did you doubt it." She replied in her characteristic Anna way before she removed the headphones and placed them back on his head. Then she looked at him shily and grabbed on his shirt leaning her head on his chest.
"Thank you." She whispered hiding her face.
Yoh put his arms around her content to hold her tight, proud of her.
"No, thank you Anna, you were amazing, your power is incredible!" Yoh said genuinely impressed.
"Aha…" Anna agreed her eyes closing. Her fists still held on him with all her remaining strength. He had been there for her and gave her strength to fight it, she did it. She couldn't believe that after all these years she learnt how to fight back. She felt both relieved and grateful to Yoh for it.
Amidamaru watched the scene unfold smiling gently. He was more than certain there was more to this, but now wasn't the time to ask more. The view of the two tenderly hugging things just made him feel warmth and happiness.
"YOOOH, ARE YOU OK?!" Manta's voice shouted from outside the door, breaking the serene mood.
If Anna wouldn't have been this tired, she sure would have given him the beating of his life.
"Yeah, totally fine Manta, no need to come in, why are you asking?" Yoh enquired uncertain, ready to run out of the room through the open balcony door if needed to hide with Anna. The girl seemed to have fallen asleep in his arms, probably exhausted from all the effort. He understood, he felt himself over his limit.
"There was an earthquake Yoh, a really bad one, the whole house shook! Please don't tell me that you also slept through it, Ryu was sound asleep too!" Manta complained.
"We're fine Manta and yeah, master Yoh kind of slept through it, I woke him up." Amidamaru said in a panicked, yet conspiratorially voice looking at Yoh who was nodding vigorously.
He felt Yoh was over his limit and needed to urgently go to sleep so he thought he should step in and help with Manta. Never mind that Manta coming in would result in an awkward encounter that would need a lot of explaining to do that, again, Amidamaru knew Yoh didn't have the energy for any longer. It was actually a miracle the boy was still standing and also holding Anna.
"Yeah, we're fine Manta and don't worry about Anna, I've already checked on her and she was fine, she threw a pillow at me for bothering her."
"OK, then I'll go back to sleep I'm glad you're well. And I'm sorry about Anna, I swear, part of me thought you did something to anger her or she's taking revenge for you making her cry and the house is shaking from her beating you. But just a pillow in the face is probably the lightest you can get form her." Manta said jokingly. "OK, I better go before she hears me, she'll remember she wanted to kill me last time…or times…" Manta added thoughtfully and went back to his bed downstairs.
"If only you knew how close you were with that thought…or thoughts" Yoh and Amidamaru said sweat dropping.
"Yoh-dono, Anna's powers are astonishing, I've never felt such a shamanic power ever before. Did you know about it?" Amidamaru asked curios.
"Yes and no, but that's a story to tell another time, now I just wanna go back to bed." Yoh said yawning and Amidamaru nodded in understanding.
Yoh tried to move Anna, but the girl seemed glued to his yukata.
"Anna?" Yoh asked his eyes closing, but the girl didn't move. She was sound asleep, yet her fists hold on him for dear life.
Yoh felt he couldn't hold for long. He touched her wound on the cheek, inspecting it carefully. He'll take care of it tomorrow, it didn't seem bad.
He looked carefully at Anna's tense figure holding so dearly to him. All the dreadful events she's been through and her fear for his life crossed his mind. He could have made the effort to get her back to her room, yet something in him made him stay in place and reconsider. And it might have been exhaustion speaking, but at this point, he just didn't care.
"You know, what? She might lose it again and I really can't do another fight, I want to sleep, so good night Amidamaru!" Yoh called as he went to his bed and dropped on it with Anna. He grabbed the covers, removed his headphones and cuddled with her closing his eyes too exhausted to mind their closeness or position or intimacy or anything. It was actually so nice and comfortable to cuddle with her. And she was warmed and smelt nice. Yoh felt himself falling asleep, but Amidamaru's scandalized voice interrupted his peacefulness.
"But, bu, but YOH-DONO! You can't just sleep with her, I mean you two, you…" A very red Amidamaru said looking at them from between his hands hiding his face.
"Amidamaru I'm so exhausted that I really don't care, all we're doing is sleeping, I really just want a peaceful sleep and I mean look at her, she's holding on, there's not much I can do, I really don't have the heart to push her, especially after everything she's been through…and we're fiancées after all and bla bla bla, just go to sleep, things will work out in the morning. Good night!" And with that Yoh just turned around, face-up, with one hand hiding his eyes and the others on Anna's back, now sleeping on his chest.
Not so long Yoh was sound asleep himself and a still very red Amidamaru watched the two teens' bodies raising up and down, sleeping peacefully, finally resting from a very eventful day. Anna's body also seemed to untense, yet her fists still hold on to Yoh's sleeping yukata.
Amidamaru, however, took a long time before he could get into any sleeping stance, still very flustered by how closed Yoh and Anna were. Should he leave? That wasn't a good idea in his mind, what if trouble stroke again, he couldn't leave Yoh alone. He had a feeling that judging from their interactions, it wasn't the first time they were so close, especially after he saw them sleeping before earlier that day. What had happened? He felt as if he missed a couple of episodes from a favorite telenovela. He hoped the two would fill him in the morning and that Anna wouldn't send him to Hell. He prayed.
