Chapter 19: The Other

Danny lay on his back, staring up at the clouds with a scowl set across his features. Despite the fun he and the gang had last night, there was always some other threat looming around the corner. Ghosts, shinigami, hollows, and now Bounts.

Jin Kariya, whoever the heck he was, and Vlad were probably going to rear their ugly heads at any moment. All of that wasn't even including the whole hollow thing living free of rent in his inner world. This was all shaping up to be a particularly big drag.

They were likely going Bount hunting that night. Yet another distraction from Aizen and from getting home. He didn't miss the constant ghost attacks in the slightest, but the little bit of time he'd been able to spend with Sam and Tuck looking for Vlad had him feeling more than a little bit homesick. This wasn't to say that he wouldn't miss hanging out with his new friends, but it just wasn't home.

Danny closed his eyes, sucking in a deep breath. Well, at least it couldn't get any worse.

"Ah! A ghost!"

Danny's eyes snapped open as he let out a long groan. 'Of course' thought Danny. 'I've really gotta stop jinxing myself.'

The halfa sat up to see his friends had already begun to take on the ghost. The students had long since ran off, thankfully, at the sight of the ghost, screaming and panicking. Danny couldn't help but groan at the sight of its flaming green mohawk.

Of course the ghost was Skulker.

"Damn!" cursed Ichigo as he fell through the ghoul. "I can't cut this guy!"

"No duh," scoffed Dani, firing off a ghost ray. "Ghost, remember?"

It was easy to see they weren't faring too well. A quick glance over to Jazz told him she was devoid of ghost-fighting tech. The others weren't exactly adept in fighting ghosts, either. It'd be up to him and Dani.

With ease, Danny found himself in his ghost form. 'Dani, you distract him while I attack him from behind!'

'Gotcha!'

"Hey, Skulker!" shouted Dani as she fired off a ghost ray. "Your hunting sucks! Find a new hobby!"

Skulker easily created a shield, watching the blast bounce off. "Child, you will have to do much better than that if you wish to defeat me. Ouch!"

Danny grinned from behind the newly collapsed Skulker, blowing out his smoking hand. "Hey, buddy. Didn't expect to see you today!"

Skulker grinned as he floated back to his feet. "Ah, Ghost Child. I will hang your pelt on my wall!"

The entire group seemed to blanch at the image. Danny just sighed. "I know, I know. Disgusting."

"Keep your focus, whelp!"

Danny turned intangible just in time to avoid a small, speeding missile. "You're gonna have to do better than that!"

Skulker smirked. "Do I?"

Danny frowned before watching in horror as the missile redirected itself and raced for Orihime.

"Eek!" yelped Orihime as she leaped back to avoid the missile. The small missile exploded with a loud boom, tearing up the grass and kicking dirt and smoke into the air.

'You wouldn't happen to have the Thermos handy, would you?' Danny asked Dani, telepathically.

'You can't just throw him in a portal?'

'. . . Why didn't I think of that?!'

'Cause I'm the smart one, Ghost Boy. Now get moving!'

Danny rolled his eyes at the barb, instead choosing to summon his shikai. "Hey, guys! Back off! He's mine."

"Gotcha!" affirmed Ichigo as he sliced through a missile. "Take him down, Danny!"

"Oh? You think you can take me on, whelp?"

The halfa gave Skulker a knowing smirk. "Well, I've only beat you a gazillion times before this, so I'll go with yes!"

Danny spun his double scythe and opened a portal behind the ghost. Skulker looked back at the portal with no small amount of shock and fear. "You have Pariah's flames, boy?!"

Danny ignored him in favor of giving a slight wave. "Enjoy your one way ticket to the Ghost Zone, Skulker!"

Just as the words left his mouth, he felt a pull. It was like an invisible hand had snatched him round the waist. Try as he might, he couldn't escape its grasp. He could've sworn he heard a malevolent cackling as the pull sucked him straight into the portal, leaving Skulker and his friends behind.

Danny surveyed his surroundings with a confused expression. He had no clue where he was. This sure as heck wasn't the Ghost Zone.

The most striking thing he could gather was sand. Lots of shifting sand, some of it forming small sand dunes. There were a sparse amount of trees scattered throughout the sifting desert, each of them barren of leaves. Ah, it was also nighttime if the crescent moon was any indication.

He tried to sense for his friends, stretching out his senses as far as they'd go. It took a while, but he was able to find them. They were surprisingly far away. Like extremely far. It didn't even feel like they were on the planet.

'Or maybe I'm the one not on the planet.'

He shook off his inner musings and opened a new portal. This time he was sure it'd work right.

And that's when the portal shut down on him.

Danny frowned. This had never happened before. He tried again, but this time the portal didn't even form.

"What is going on?" murmured Danny. "C'mon, Kari. Work with me here!"

"He won't answer you! You're in my world now!"

Danny scowled. He was quickly starting to hate that voice. It was definitely up there with Vlad, the Box Ghost, Aizen, Technus, and Dan. Even so, he'd have to keep it talking. "What are you talking about? I thought you said you came from me?"

"Ah, you remembered! It's a bit complicated. I have two pieces of origin. Well, technically three. You just so happen to be seeing one of the others."

"Well, that's not much of an answer."

"I've never been much for description."

Danny snorted. Wasn't that the truth. "So, you brought me here? I have to say, although I'm not exactly a house tour type of guy, this place is a bit of a fixer-upper."

"I only directed your power here."

"Can't you give me one straight answer?"

There was a long stretch of silence. Danny rolled his eyes as he trudged forward in the sand. Hopefully he could find some sign of life. "Does anybody else live down here?"

He didn't know why he was bothering asking considering how useless questions seemed to be with the thing. Luckily, he got an answer. "Yes, but you won't get to meet them."

Danny frowned, pausing his walk. "Why?"

"Because you're gonna be too busy with me!"

Danny's vision turned to white.

"Where the heck is he?!" shouted Renji, dodging a laser.

"How the hell should I know?!" retorted Ichigo slicing yet another missile out of the air. "Dani, do you know?"

"I've got nothing!" cried Dani, throwing a punch at the ghost. "It's like my connection with him is on static or something!"

"Any ideas on how we beat this thing?" Ichigo asked.

Dani shook her head. "We can't get rid of him unless we bring him to the Zone!"

"Hmph. You whelps are pathetic! I'm not even breaking a sweat yet!"

Skulker's armor sprouted a dozen missile launchers and fired a torrent of missiles at Chad. The teen raised a fist toward the projectiles, blowing them out of the air with loud explosions.

"Alright, new plan," instructed Ichigo. "Chad, get Orihime and Uryu out of here. Jazz, you go with them and head back to your apartment and bring back the Thermos. The rest of us will hold him off."

The group nodded and made to run off. Suddenly, a whip slashed at the spot right in front of Jazz's feet, halting them. Jazz gulped at the fairly deep, thin crevice just in front of her feet. A hit from that whip would be no joke. "Are you going to continue playing with your prey, Skulker?"

The man who walked in, with the whip in hand, had a goatee, a sly grin, and a crisp suit. A snake was draped across his shoulders. He looked like a deadly businessman.

"Are you a Bount?" demanded Ichigo.

The Bount gave a small bow, sly grin never leaving his face. "Yes, I am a Bount. My name is Ryō Utagawa. It is a pleasure to meet you."

Utagawa straightened and turned to Skulker. "Would you do me a favor? Get rid of the halfa for me. I'll take the Quincy."

Chad stared down the man. 'So, this is a Bount. . .'

"I'm not currently interested in you all, right now," spoke Utagawa, silkily. "I just want the Quincy."

"Why do you want Uryu?" asked Dani.

Utagawa simply smiled. "That is none of your concern. Now, if you give him up, this will all be painless."

"Like hell it isn't our concern!" shouted Ichigo, gripping his zanpakutō tighter. "If you want our friend, you're gonna have to take us out first!"

"Oh? Good thing I planned on doing so."

Utagawa raised his whip and swiped it all about the ground, making deep lacerations in the grass. Chad's eyes widened as snakes sprung from the freshly made holes.

The snakes surged toward each of the teens. The snake slithering toward Chad hissed before jumping at him, fangs bared. He easily snagged the leaping snake out of the air, crushing it in hand.

"Evolve your form, Chad! You will make quick work of this Bount!"

Chad's eyes narrowed. There was that voice again like in the Soul Society. Except he knew it wasn't his abuelo this time.

'Who are you?' Chad demanded. 'Who are you really?'

"What do you mean? I'm your abuelo!"

'Who are you?!'

There was a brief silence. Then came the laughter. It was a series of foul, raspy and twisted huffs of air, almost as if he were out of breath. "I didn't think you would catch on so fast. I underestimated you, brat."

'Answer my question!'

"It doesn't matter, does it? I make you stronger. You saw how you were able to fight on par with that Captain, didn't you?"

Chad cursed a small part of his brain that agreed. If it weren't for the strange power, he'd have stood no chance. He had enjoyed being strong enough to not be a burden.

'I don't need you. I'll get stronger with my friends without your power.'

The voice cackled his dry, gasping laugh. "Are you sure about that? Your well was dry before I came along! You used up all of your potential. With me, you can ascend to the next level!"

Chad scowled. 'I don't need you!'

"Ah, but your friends do."

Chad looked up to see an unconscious student wrapped up in snakes. His friends were watching Utagawa with apprehension, and Dani and Skulker were nowhere to be found.

"Give me the Quincy, and I will set this woman free. Make any sudden movements, and I won't be able to promise her survival."

"You bastard!" Ichigo shouted. "What happened to a fair fight?!"

Utagawa looked at him, amused. "What? I'm the one who's outnumbered here, if I remember correctly. It's hardly been fair for me."

Ichigo scowled at him and slightly turned to Renji. "Do you think a Flash Step could work?" he whispered.

"No way! It's too risky. His Doll might kill the woman on reflex. We're stuck."

"Hey, Noba. Do you think you could teleport the woman away?"

Noba shook his head. "I'm too weak in this body. The furthest I could go is five meters."

"I'll go with them!"

Chad turned to face a resolute Uryu. "There's no use in someone getting hurt because of me."

Chad grimaced. Maybe if he tapped into his power they could do something. It wouldn't be for long. Just for a little and then he'd be rid off the power. . .

"Goethe, attack!"

Chad snapped up to see a giant behemoth of fire launch a fireball at Utagawa. He narrowly sidestepped the blast as his Doll released the hostage.

"Yoshino! Haven't you learned your lesson?"

Yoshino smirked as she hopped down from the golem's shoulder. "Clearly I haven't. Why don't you try your luck again?"

Utagawa smiled as he brandished his whip. "I will enjoy putting you in your place!"

"Good luck, trying! Goethe, to me!"

The golem raised up at the command. "Yes, Yoshino!"

Goethe leaped back and stood next to Yoshino. She expertly climbed onto his shoulder as Goethe took off.

Utagawa scoffed, his battle with the group forgotten. "You can't run from me, Yoshino! Fried, come!"

"What about the Quincy?" Fried hissed.

"He'll be there later. Now, come!"

"Ugh, fine! You're always so demanding. . ."

It wasn't too long before both Bounts were long gone. The scarred battleground being the only evidence of their presence.

"What was that about?" asked Uryu.

"It doesn't matter!" retorted Ichigo. "We need to go help Dani!"

Chad took a deep breath and followed after his friends. Whatever voice was could wait. He had a friend to help.

"You can't dodge forever, whelp!"

Dani grunted, loathe to admit the hunter was correct. Her movements were only getting slower, and it didn't seem as if he'd be running out ammunition any time soon.

"Use me!" Messatsu demanded. "This catch and release method must end! You can dismantle him completely!"

Dani shook her head, just barely going intangible in time to dodge a laser. "He can probably regenerate! It wouldn't do any good."

"So, you refuse to even attempt the possibility?"

Dani scowled. "I'm just saying-"

"Think about it. He fights with a suit, correct?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

"Then he likely has a weaker form beneath all of that armour. . ."

Dani's eyes brightened. "And if I destroy the armour, I don't have to use the power on Skulker directly!"

"Now you're getting it."

Dani felt the black rings traverse her body, morphing her into her Shinigami form. Skulker grinned. "Don't think your Soul Reaper powers will save you, whelp!"

Dani smirked. "I wouldn't be to sure about that. Rip to pieces, Messatsu!"

Her hands were fitted with her familiar, destructive, white gloves. Dani gave a quick Flash Step, catching the hunter by surprise. She gave his armor a light tap before retreating with another quick Flash Step.

Skulker looked at her with a raised brow. "Is that all?"

"Give it a second."

The ghost was about to throw another taunt when a cracking sound reached his ears. Skulker looked down and gasped as his armor began to disintegrate. "What did you do to me, Ghost Child?!"

Dani grinned at Skulker's true form. She hadn't been expecting a tiny green blob with mini limbs. It was adorably hilarious. "My zanpakutō's ability allows me to decompose anything it touches. See ya later, Skulky!"

Danny was in the pit again. He could recognize the dank atmosphere, devoid of light, with sludge coated walls anywhere. He was beginning to know the area a lot more intimately than he'd ever wanted to.

"Y'know, we've gotta stop meeting like this," muttered Danny. "We could go see a movie or something. I hear Creepy Hollow Parasites has really good reviews."

The thing cackled. "Your wit is definitely appreciated. But I think it's time that we fight!"

Danny blinked. "Wait, we're fighting now? Why?"

"I've gotta get you ready somehow!"

Danny, thankfully, had the sense to light up the pit. He could see the thing looked exactly like him with eight beady eyes. That and six spider legs protruding from its back.

Danny dodged a sword stab with a quick sidestep. "Woah! Hold on get ready for what?"

"My master!"

Before Danny could ask anything the spider was on him again, slashing and stabbing. Danny could barely dodge every strike sent his way, but it was far from easy. His look-alike was much faster than himself.

Danny stifled a cry as he received a slash across the arm, quickly drawing rivulets of blood. The parasite finally ended his onslaught, slinging his sword over his shoulder. "Is this all the Great One can do? How disappointing."

Danny gave his best glare as he called on his zanpakutō. "Easy for you to say. I don't even have a sword!"

Only to get nothing.

The thing apparently read his mind. "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. You'll be fighting on my terms. Random swords only."

A sword simmered into existence on the pit floor. It looked like a basic katana. Danny picked it up with mild discomfort. It didn't feel right, but it was better than nothing. He had a feeling he was going to need every advantage he could get.

Yoshino turned a corner. It had taken her several hours to escape Utagawa's sight, but she had finally managed it. There wasn't much time to celebrate, though. She still had to warn the Quincy.

"When will you learn that there is no escape, Yoshino? I truly do not understand Kariya-sama's patience with you."

Yoshino winced as she turned around, coming face to face with Utagawa, Fried slung over his shoulders. "I think you'll find that I'm a very hard woman to capture."

Utagawa scoffed. "Hardly, you're simply a nuisance. Now, Fried, attack!"

The snake lunged for the woman, but she leaned away from it, letting the reptile sail over her shoulder. It rebounded of the wall behind her before coiling up, hissing all the while.

She didn't have many options. She was in a narrow alley. It wouldn't be hard to summon Goethe and run, but Utagawa knew as well as she did.

Escape was futile. She'd have to fight.

"What do you mean you still can't sense him?" asked Ichigo.

"You heard what I said!" snapped Dani. "Clean your ears!"

The group watched Dani, blankly. They hadn't heard her snap like that in, well, forever.

Dani sighed as she dropped out of her shinigami form. "I'm sorry, I'm just really stressed out right now. I don't know what's stopping the connection. It's never happened before."

"Hey," Ichigo said, putting a hand on her shoulder. "We'll find him, alright? Don't sweat it."

Dani smiled and nodded. "Thanks, Ichigo."

"We should probably head to Urahara's shop," Uryu reasoned. "He'd likely know what's going on with Danny."

The group nodded and began to head off toward the shop.

"Hey!" Skulker squeaked. "Are you just going to turn your backs on me?!"

The group turned, blinking owlishly at the ghost. They'd genuinely forgot he was still there.

"Oh yeah, what're we gonna do about the pipsqueak?" asked Ichigo, jerking a thumb at the indignant blob.

"I'm right here! The least you could do is properly address me!"

Dani shrugged. "Let's leave him. He can't do any real damage like this."

With that the group once again turned heel, heading for the exiled shopkeeper.

"How can you even control that?!" asked Danny, barely able to parry a sword strike.

"It's my abode down here which means my rules. Not even your zanpakutō can help you down here, not unless he really wants to jump in. Can't say that I blame him for bowing out!"

Danny blinked. Did that mean Karitoriki abandoned him? He shook his head with a scowl. The hollow spider was lying; he had to be. "Fine, I'll just have to kick your butt without it!"

Danny felt the blue rings transform into Phantom as he charged the monster. He swiped down at the parasite's arm, only for it to parry the blade.

Danny grunted as he tried to bring his sword back in front of him, but the parasite was faster. It hit Danny with the hilt of its sword hard in the gut, making Danny double over and slam into the wall.

The halfa gasped in painful breaths as he clutched at his sword hilt. He didn't even have the energy to complain about the disgusting sludge coating his back. Fighting this guy was far too draining. "Geez, why is that thing so fast?"

"Is that the best you can do, Inviso-Bill?"

Danny's eyes narrowed, fatigue forgotten. "OK, you know what? Forget you!"

Danny fired a ghost ray at the parasite that was easily sliced in half. The halfa used the distraction and shot up like a rocket, aiming for that blip of light signaling an opening. He was dimly aware of the sonic boom echoing behind him. He was actually gonna get out of there.

Until, he felt a rope around his leg and suddenly he was dragged back to the ground.

"Oh, Danny," hissed the sadistic voice. "This isn't over yet."

The group once again find themselves in Urahara's guest room. Jazz was too preoccupied with her feelings of guilt to even mind the crowded room. She was supposed to his protector, but she'd been helpless. This wasn't the first time she'd been able to do nothing, either, and she was sick of it.

"Do you have any idea what happened to Danny?" Jazz asked, tentatively. She didn't know what she'd do if the man answered in the negative.

Urahara shrugged. "I've got multiple theories, but I can't be certain of any of them. His shikai ability, although resourceful, can also be very dangerous."

"How so?" asked Orihime.

"There are an infinite amount of realms out there. If his power malfunctions, he can be sent to an entirely different realm. Or even worse, he could get stuck in between realms."

Jazz winced at the thought of Danny trapped between the dimensions.

"So, he could be in the Ghost Zone right now?" Uryu asked.

"Or Hell," muttered Renji.

Jazz's eyes widened. But before she could respond, Ichigo beat her to it. "I thought you said Hell wouldn't take a living soul?!"

"Yeah, but Danny's shikai is something I didn't account for. It was able to bypass the Seireitei's shield. It's built for crossing dimensions, regardless of dimensional rules. There's still a chance Hell could expel him, though. He might not even be there, either."

"We've got to go looking for him!" cried Orihime. "He could be in danger!"

"Where we would we start?" asked Urahara. "He could be anywhere right now. There are a lot of realms out there."

"So, are you saying we should do nothing?!" asked Ichigo.

Urahara sighed. "Ichigo, remember your training exercise. You've got to think before you act. You could search for years and still not find him. We need something to sense him, so we can start looking in the right direction."

A light bulb went off in Jazz's head. "That's it! Dani, take me back to our apartment!"

"You have an idea?" asked Uryu.

Jazz grinned, widely. "Yeah, the Fenton Booo-merang."

"You won't let me go will you?"

"Hey, you're catching on!" grinned the parasite.

Danny shoved himself to his feet, nearly slipping on the substance he was beginning to think was webbing. "Can I at least get your name?"

"Noritaka."

"You still haven't escaped? I would've thought you'd be better than this Daniel."

Danny's scowl reopened at the sound. Ah yes, another one of the people he hated the most. "I'm not exactly in the mood for this, Dan. We can have our telepathic conversation later."

"Oh, but I thought you would like some advice?"

"Why would you help me?"

"I can't kill you myself if you can't even get out of your inner world."

Danny stared down Noritaka as he loosely held his sword. As much as he hated to admit it, he didn't have much of a choice. "Fine. What's your advice?"

"You're in your inner world. You control it."

Danny glared upwards, more than a little indignant. "That's what you call advice?!"

"Gah! I can't believe I come from half of you! It's your inner world, not this parasite's! You can get out anytime you wish! Simply will yourself back to the real world."

Danny blinked. That actually made a surprising amount of sense.

"Alright, I'll try it."

Danny closed his eyes, concentrating on the outside of the hole. Suddenly, he felt a searing heat that caused him to look up.

Whatever he'd been expecting to happen, it surely wasn't a giant, green, fiery hand stretching down to pick him up. The flames writhed and danced as they burned their way through the pit. Definitely not what he'd been expecting to see today, but he wasn't complaining.

"Hey, Noritaka," taunted Danny. "How's this for defiance?!"

The hand grasped Danny at the same time, pulling him out of the hole. The hollow's shrill screams filled the backdrop as he rose out of the burning hole.

He blinked, wincing as his eyes stung from the hundreds of grainy particles in his eyes. He wiped furiously at them, improving his as much as his watering eyes would allow.

He was back in the desert, lying face-down in the sand. He shook the sand out of his hair and ears from his impromptu sand nap. He pushed himself up onto his wobbly, sleeping legs.

Danny ignored the discomfort in favor of stretching out a hand. The familiar cool metal of his double-scythe reached his fingers, filling the halfa with relief. Even so, he couldn't help but hear Noritaka's taunt. He knew it was probably a load of crap, but there was always the chance. . .

"Danny, whatever he told you, it's not true. You can't afford to have your mind divided. Your friends need you right now."

Kari was right. This could wait until later. Who cared what some random spider parasite said anyway?

Danny popping into Urahara's living room was starting to become routine in a way he wasn't sure he liked. Nonetheless, his friends rushed to meet him.

"What the hell happened to you?" asked Ichigo. "You get lost or something?"

Danny waved a hand, tiredly. "It's a long story that I don't feel like telling. What happened to Skulker?"

"Dani took care of him with Messatsu!" Orihime answered. "Dani-chan truly is incredible! I had no idea he was just a tiny, green blob!"

Under normal circumstances, Danny would've been laughing right alongside her. But he couldn't help the uneasy feeling stirring in his gut. Aizen's betrayal, Vlad's visit, Jin Kariya, the Bounts, rumors of Pariah rising, and now this whole inner hollow thing? It felt like everything was revving up to some giant climax, and Danny didn't think it'd be a good one.

"Danny-kun? Are you alright?"

Danny jolted as he looked down at the worried doe eyes of Orihime. A quick glance around the room showed the expecting and somewhat concerned faces of his friends. All except for two.

"Where are Jazz and Dani?" Danny asked. "Ow!"

Danny rubbed the back of his head to alleviate the stinging pain in the back of his head. He looked down, behind him, to see the Fenton Booo-merang at his feet. And the Fenton Clan wasn't far behind.

Dani crashed into Danny, wrapping him in a powerful hug. Not for the first time, he was thankful for his ghostly durability. "Danny! Where were you?!"

"It's complicated. I'm fine, now. Don't worry."

"You'd better be!"

Danny looked up to see Jazz and his parents standing at the doorway. He could almost see the worry lifting off of their shoulders. "Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad. I hope I didn't worry you guys too much."

His mom smiled, waving a hand and joining the hug. "We're just glad you're alright! But never do that again."

Danny felt a chuckle escape his throat. "Understood, Mom."

Danny could feel the tension slipping away in his mother and Dani's embrace. He couldn't remember the last time he'd hugged his parents. He made a mental note to do it more often.

"A Bount!"

Danny's peaceful reverie was snapped as his eyes scoured the room for the threat. He wasn't entirely sure who made the declaration, but it sounded genuine. Sure enough, a brunette woman walked into the room stopping just short of the doorway.

The woman was in bad shape. Her face was bruised, and her clothes were dirty and decorated with precise lacerations. Despite this, Danny could see the power she held within.

"It's the Bount from before!" gasped Orihime.

The woman nodded, her hands held up in a form of surrender. "Quincy, I'm here to warn you. The Bounts will be coming for you soon."

Jin sat in his familiar position by the window, looking out at the city in the afternoon's waning glow. The people talked, laughed, and lived below him. They lived blissfully unaware of the realms existing just outside of their own. The humans were very interesting that way. They were free but limited. In time, the Bounts would have that same freedom with no limits.

Jin would be damned if he didn't secure that future.

"She escaped just like you expected."

Jin felt a melancholic smile twitch onto his face. "That's Yoshino-san for you, Utagawa-san. Filled with a fire too bright for her own good."

Utagawa casually traversed the room, until he was side by side with Jin. "So, what's next?"

Jin smiled, warmly, never taking his eyes of the shining city. "Gather Vladimir-san and the other Bounts. Phase 2 is at hand."
