When the lights hit me, Travis, and David, I could see everyone's faces. They looked kinda mad that their DJ music had been stopped.
"Hey. I'm Cheyenne. This is our little group, and we're gonna sing for you tonight," I said a little nervously. My shyness still got the best of me at times, but always subsided once our shows began.
"We're gonna perform some covers, because I'm no Shakespeare when it comes to songs," I joked with a quirked brow, and I earned a few chuckles. It was true, though. I hadn't the first clue how to write a song, but David was a natural at it. I almost always caught him with a guitar pick between his teeth, and a pencil in his hand.
I closed my eyes and released a slow breath just before the first staccato notes of the song began.
Bad scene, sixty thousand degrees
Don't know what you want from me
We all speak, but nobody thinks
And I'm lookin' for a way to leave
I'm going off again, off again
I'm going off again
Yeah, my temperament, temperament
It's too rough for them
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
I've been trying to suss it out
Everybody here, everybody's just zoning out
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
All the words and what to doubt
Everybody here, everybody's just floatin' 'round
Bad dream, somethin' stuck in your teeth
Little tragedies on repeat
Wound me, I'm not feeling the scene
You gotta give me something I believe
I'm going off again, off again
I'm going off again
Yeah, my temperament, temperament
It's too rough for them
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
I've been trying to suss it out
Everybody here, everybody's just zoning out
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
All the words and what to doubt
Everybody here, everybody's just floatin' round
As my music buzz washed over me, my eyes searched the audience comfortably. They landed on a boy, about my age, staring at me. He had a red T-shirt and jeans, but he was extremely pale. His features were straight and perfect, like a chiseled statue. He had dark brown hair that was just above his eyebrows. If I hadn't been on a stage, so focused on my music, I would have said that he looked to be in a trance.
A blonde girl, grasping his arm, was grimacing in what looked like pain. I almost missed my cue after the bridge, and started singing again, tearing my gaze from them.
Can you tell me what's the reason
I'm not feeling what you're feeling?
Give me something to believe in
Or give it up, or give it up now
I clapped my hands above my head with the beat of the suddenly increased tempo, inviting them to join along. The crowd happily obliged, bouncing up and down with the tempo now. I sang the chorus for the last time, with more power.
What's the fuss, what's the fuss about?
I've been trying to suss it out
Everybody here, everybody's just zoning out
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
I've been trying to suss it out
Everybody here, everybody's just zoning out
What's the fuss, the fuss about?
All the words and what to doubt
Everybody here, everybody's just floatin' 'round
I was met with a roar of applause, and I internally sighed in relief, elated that they seemed to be enjoying us. I looked to Travis and David and mouthed the next song. They nodded and Travis wiped sweat off his brow. I turned back to the microphone, absentmindedly picking my guitar.
"This one's a bit of a throwback," I reminded them as I looped it over my shoulder. "If you're old enough to remember this, go ahead and sing along." I laughed, and began strumming the intro.
One of these nights
One of these crazy 'ol nights
We're gonna find out, pretty mama
What turns on your lights
The full moon is calling
Your fever is high
And the wicked wind whispers and moans
You got your demons
And you got desires
Well, I've got a few of my own
Oooooh, someone to be kind to
In between the dark and light
Oooooh, comin' right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you one of these nights
One of these dreams
One of these lost and lonely dreams, now
We're gonna find one
Oooh, one that really screams
I've been searching for the daughter of the Devil himself
I've been searching for an angel in white
I've been waitin' for a woman who's a little of both
And I can feel her but she's nowhere in sight
Oooh, loneliness will blind you
In between the wrong and the right
Ohh whoa whoa
Ooooh, comin' right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you one of these nights
David and I broke out into "Guitar Hero Mode", as we dubbed it, and started playing the interlude of the bridge, facing each other and laughing. We made a big show of it, bending to our knees and throwing our heads back. His straight light brown hair barely flopped in his face and I could see the sweat glistening on his face.
One of these nights
Oooh, in between the dark and the light
Comin' right behind you, swear I'm gonna find you
Get you baby, one of these nights
One of these nights
Ooooh-ooh
Ooooh-ooh
One of these nights
I can feel it
I can feel it
One of these nights
Comin' right behind you
Swear I'm gonna find you now
One of these nights
By the time I came back to the real world, everyone was cheering louder than before, whistling and dancing. My eyes roamed the audience, but I noticed that the boy I saw earlier was gone. I turned my attention back to the audience and slightly bowed in thanks.
"Thank you," I chuckled into the mic. "Thank you so much."
I motioned to my fellow band mates, definitely not taking all the credit. Without them, I wouldn't be anything.
Second chapter re-written! Stay tuned, and I'm sorry for any confusion this may temporarily cause.
