APOV

I did not bother taking the car. I ran back to the castle. I had to make an escape from the scent.

I had been so close, so very close to getting what I wanted.

But one folly of mine became my downfall.

I looked into her damn eyes.

Nothing so simple should have stopped me. Nothing ever stopped me.

Once my eyes laid on hers, picking out each individual fleck of green, blue, and gold, I realized that I had completely underestimated her innocence. The entirety of it was there to see; her terror, openness, clarity, purity, compassion...

All of which I hated.

I could not bear to see it; my disgust and anger overtook me, shadowing the sweet, revolting song that her blood sang to me.

I ran, just barely being able to ignore the call.

Before I entered the castle, I made my decision; I could not allow Aro to see this. I was sure he would ask why I was missing, and I knew Jane would be worried. I passed by Gianna's desk, paying her no mind. Aro would soon be firing her. Or feasting on her, that is. I smirked.

"Alec," she greeted me, bowing her head as I passed.

"Gianna," I spat, sparing my glance from her direction.

Picturing Gianna being sucked dry was too good and entertaining. I hoped Aro would share with the group.

The human would be even better. And you don't have to share her.

I growled to myself, swallowing a pool of venom.

I was so close to sinking my teeth into her buttery, delicate skin, but then...

Demetri was right. She has a gift. A gift Aro could not know about.

Wait.

Why was I defending a human? Protecting her?

I entertained the idea of finding her, and completing my job in her slumber. Better yet, maybe I would allow Jane to torture her first, and then I'd suck her dry. My smirk returned.

"Brother," Jane sighed with relief. She embraced me in half a second's time, locking her arms around my middle. "Where have you been? Aro is awaiting your presence."

"I am sorry, sister," I apologized, returning the embrace. Her light, lavender scent washed away the revolting one that resided in my senses. "I was...finishing my feeding. Alone. I'm afraid I had not enough entertainment at the venue."

She pulled away from me and smiled knowingly.

"Finish your pestering human?" she asked, evil delight glittering her eyes.

"Many humans," I lied through my teeth with a smile. I still, in fact, had the burning ache in my throat. I had been so occupied with escaping the human, that I did not make a pit stop. I would have to go out. Again.

Jane smiled back, but she could always tell when I was lying. Twin telepathy.

"Don't worry, brother. I'll bring you back a nice human," she said. I could tell she was going to have her fun. I just hoped she wouldn't find my human. Wait.

My human?

Snap out it, Alec. You need to feed. Badly.

"That would be wonderful, sister. I must speak with Aro now," I conceded, kissing her on the cheek and making my way to the throne room.

Aro's face broke into an aged smile. He stood from his throne.

"Ah, Alec, you've returned from your nightly retreat. I do trust that you and the others had fun?" He asked.

"Yes, Master," I replied smoothly. I glanced over, noticing Marcus studying me with slight interest.

He would not dare.

Aro ghosted forward, extending his hand toward me. I masked my expression with blankness, easily giving him my hand.

Moments later, his irises cleared from their dream, delight shining in his eyes.

"My, my, we've met ourselves a human, haven't we?" Aro crooned. "With such power. Incredible! What an asset she would be to the Guard, wouldn't she, my son?" I knew he was testing me.

"I do not know, Master," I offered neutrally.

"Your experience with her was quite...interesting, wouldn't you say? A human who can call to a vampire with her own voice," he mused, turning slowly to return to his seat.

"I would certainly love to meet her."

I would never stray from my Master, much less question his motives. For the first time ever, I did not agree. She could not be here.

"Master, I do not think she would be of any help, if I may voice it. I have not fed in quite a while. I believe my thirst was overpowering my senses. I was not in a right state of mind. Jane is currently searching for a human to bring back for me," I lied, trying to talk him out of it.

"A human? I do hope you intend to eat her," Caius hissed from his place. "They are not to come into our castle unless it is to eat!"

Aro held up his hand. "Caius, please. This human is very...unique, and...different. You must see for yourself. Why, she can lure people to her with her voice. Much like...a siren, wouldn't you agree, Alec?" he crooned again. "And better yet- she is perfect as your la tua catante."

I suppressed the growl that threatened to rip from my throat. I despised those words.

Aro's smile grew. Marcus's expression stayed the same. Caius smirked at my expression.

Bastard.

"Master-" I tried, but he interrupted me.

"That is all, Alec. You may leave. Please replenish your thirst and we will discuss this further," Aro said with finality, flashing his palm once again. I simply nodded and made my way to exit. His departing words only added to my anger.

"I do look forward to meeting her."
