The early evening

(Jack and Elizabeth chuckling )

OK where we going? Jack said

It's a surprise Elizabeth said

What kind of surprise? Jack said

A good one! (Sighs anxiously) so what do you think? Elizabeth said

Of Abigail's old house? Jack

I'm thinking of renting it. Elizabeth said

Doesn't joe crossing live here? Jack said

He just took a job in Santa Clarita. And with Clara here Abigail could really use the extra space but the real reason is... it's time for me to put down roots here. Valley Springis my home. And it's the place I love. Elizabeth said

And the people you love, right? Jack said

You could say that. Elizabeth said

That night (footsteps)

Sorry to interrupt. I need your opinion Clara said

Sure Elizabeth said

Green? Or blue? Clara said

Are you trying to impress someone? Elizabeth said

No, but I'm working with Abigail at the cafe tomorrow. Clara said

Mmm Elizabeth said

Has anyone seen my baseball glove? Corey said

Have you checked your bedroom ? Elizabeth said

It was in here before supper. Corey said

So? What do you think? Clara said

Um,the green one. It brings out your eyes. Elizabeth said

Thank you. Clara said

Well, Corey, let's give Elizabeth some privacy. She has a lot of work to do. Abigail said

Have you seen my baseball glove? Corey said

Don't you have homework? Elizabeth said

Oh, he'll get to it. Come on, let's look upstairs. He wants to practice so he gets as good as the other boys. Abigail said

just as long as he studies for his arithmetic test Elizabeth said

He will. Abigail said

Ah! There she is. Our dedicated teacher burning the midnight oil. Oh... Marco Polo? (Gasps) the thrill of discovery! Of new and uncharted territory an explorer's epic journey into the unknown the mystery... Rosemary said

Rosemary Elizabeth said

Sorry. I was hoping you could help me with something Rosemary said

You know, now is really not a good time. Elizabeth said

This won't take a moment. I was wondering if you could give me a few classic quotes on love and rejection for my advice column something... like Coleridge or... Wordsworth ! I'm a little rusty on the classics, and you're so good with all those dusty old poets. Rosemary said

Sorry, Rosie. Elizabeth has plans. Jack said

Oh. She does? Rosemary said

Oh. Right! I almost forgot. Uh, I'm sorry. Maybe another time? Elizabeth said

Of course... what plans? Rosemary said

Private plans. jack said

This is just what I needed. Elizabeth said

An evening in jail? Jack said

An evening with you. Elizabeth said

Well, it's not exactly dinner at the ritz. Jack said

It's the company that counts. Elizabeth said

(Chuckles softly) (boots scuffing on steps) (the Door opens)

I'm sorry, I'm interrupting. Bill said

Well, that's okay. Jack said

Can I borrow some of your shoe polish? Bill said

Uh, yeah you got a date too? Jack said

Not exactly. Meeting with the pinkest's in the morning. Bill said

I thought you were only talking a leave of absence from the Mounties jack said

I might as well hear what they have to say those rolls look awful good bill said

Would you like some? Elizabeth said

That's awful nice of you, Elizabeth. Thanks. Bill said

(Objects clattering)

To a... to a romantic evening together. Jack said

One of these days Elizabeth said (Both chuckling)(glasses clink)

The next day at schoolhouse

Miss thatcher? Boy said

Hmm Elizabeth said

How come Laura got an "A"and I got a "C" ? Boy said

Well, what's the first rule of writing essays? You have to separate ideas into paragraphs, and yours was just one long paragraph Elizabeth said

(Students giggles)

Corey. You are 20 minutes late. Elizabeth said

Mrs. Sutton said I could practice pitching before school. Corey said

Before school. You still have to be here when the bell rings Elizabeth said

She said it would be okay. Corey said

Well, I think you misunderstood her. Now... who can tell me about the travels of Marco Polo? Elizabeth said

Sometimes later that morning at the cafe

It's too terrible about Silas. I just feel sick. Molly said

I can't believe he's gone Florence said

What happened? Clara said

Silas Rosemary was killed in a robbery bill said

Oh, no. Poor Dottie. Clara said

She gets home from the funeral today. Molly said

Have they caught the men who did it? Abigail said

No. Not yet. But I'm confident that they will ladies Bill said

I hope Dottie knows we'll be there her. Florence

Nobody should go through something like this alone molly said

I put the last box in the pantry is there anything I can do for you, mrs. Stanton? John said

I can't think of anything. Abigail said

You know, your sink is leaking I can take a look at it after work. John said

Are you sure you have time? Abigail said

It'll only take a few minutes. That dress matches your eyes. John said

Thanks. Clara said

(Door opens and shuts) as Martin and mr. Humphrey come in

I expected more customers mr. Humphrey said

Excuse me, the breakfast rush ends before first shift at the mill. Abigail said

Ah. Could I see a menu? Mr. Humphrey said

We don't print menus Abigail said

No means. No customer. (Sniffs And huffs) what is that small? Mr Humphrey said

My buttermilk biscuits and if you don't like them, the saloon service beans and coffee. Abigail said

Mr. Humphrey isn't here to eat. Martin said

Then why all the questions? Abigail said

Well, you've finally gotten your wish I'm selling my internet in the cafe. Martin said

(Just out side as the stage coach A arrives two women One window and the other is meeting her brother there.)

If there's anything we can do...Florence said

You're too kind Dottie said

Anything at all molly said

I'll be fine Dottie said

Mrs Rosemary, I'm so sorry. May I help you your bags? Bill said

I'd appreciate that. Thank you Dottie said

I don't know your brother well, but I understand he was a good man. Bill said

I don't wish to speak ill of the dead, but I think we both know my brother was no saint. Even so, he shouldn't have died that way. Dottie said

I've contacted the regional office. They've assigned an inspector but I'm going to look into it myself. Bill said

Thank you. But aren't you on leave? Dottie said

I am but this isn't just any case. Saint or no saint, Silas deserves justice and for that matter, so do you. Bill said

Well, that is quite the undertaking. Lee said

I build a church pretty sure I can handle a house. Jack said

Yeah, but this isn't just any house we're talking about. Where... where are you planning on building, exactly? Lee said

"As a wagon cross in front of them coming from the lumber yard towards town"

Well you know Clem besser's plot on the way to Angiola? Jack said

Oh, yeah, it's a nice view from up there. Lee said

Yeah it's the best in the valley. Jack said

Oh. Lee said

So...How much ? Jack said

What, for the lumber you're gonna need, to build? Lee said

Yeah. Jack said

Uh... well, let me draw up an estimate and I'll get back to you. Lee said

Lee! Rosemary said

That's great. Thanks. Jack said

Oh, no no no no stay, stay. Lee said

There you are. Oh, Jack! Rosemary said

Hi Jack said

I don't mean to interrupt, but i have a quick update for you it won't take a minute. Rosemary said

First, I asked the crew to clean space for the new inventory. Second, I convinced the Hudson boys to sweep under that, uh... oh, the big thing with the saw. Rosemary said

The head saw? Lee said

(Gasps) yes! Head saw silly name. Third. Mrs. Weiss has generously agreed to serve afternoon refreshments. "You always say a happy crew is a productive crew." So we want a happy crew don't we? Rosemary said

Yes yes we do. Rosemary has decided to help with the mill for a while. Isn't that great? Lee said

Great jack said

Yeah. Lee said

I thought you had your hands full with the advice column? Jack said

I do, but lee has been so busy here at the mill working like a dog. Well, it's the least I could do. Rosemary said

She could do less lee said

Well! If you need me, I will be at the mercantile, picking up a few things. You are going to love what I'm doing to your office! Rosemary said

Okay! Whoa, wait! What are you doing to my office? What is she doing to my office? Lee said

I don't know, but good luck with that thanks, lee. Jack said

You on your way to Dottie's ? Frank said

I thought I'd bring her a lemon cake. It's the least I could do Abigail said

Mind if I join you? Frank said

I wouldn't mind at all Abigail said

Meanwhile at sawmill

Ask Ned yost to order the fabric we spoke about... the velour in red. Or maroon, actually, if they have it. I'll need about 20 yards. Mmm... better make it 30. Yes. 30 should do. Rosemary said

Mr. County's okay with this? Hickman said

Of course he is. Rosemary said

(Door opens)

Hey, where's he going? Lee said

He's helping me redecorates. Rosemary said

Oh, I think it's plenty decorated as it is. Lee said

Oh! Lee no. This is just the beginning. Picture it... a raised mahogany desk and chair. it'll be an office fit for a king Rosemary said

And why exactly do I need a raised desk? Lee said

Well you're the boss! The man in charge. The fearless leader! Rosemary said

I like my office the way it is. Lee said

I'm just trying to breathe some life into this dingy, old place, which it desperately needs. Rosemary said

Where's my map? Lee said

Which map? Rosemary said

What do you mean, "which map" my map! The big map that was right here on this wall above the fireplace. Lee said

Oh, that tattered old thing? I threw it out Rosemary said

you what? Lee said

Well don't worry I ordered you a new one from the survey office. You'll love it! It's in color. Rosemary said

Rosemary that map had all of my harvest schedules written on it lee said

Well, I'm sure it's written down somewhere. Oh and before I forget I gave glen butterflies the rest of the day off Rosemary said

You ... whoa whoa wait. What do you mean you gave him the rest of the day off? Lee said

Well, of course I told him it was your idea. You are the boss. Rosemary said

Sometimes I wonder about that. Wha... (Door bangs shut) what just happened? Lee said

Meanwhile on the edge of town

Well it's almost lunchtime at the cafe. I better get back. Abigail said

I think should take some time off. Frank said

(Laughs) I have to work. Abigail said

Oh, even the man upstairs took a break on the seventh day. Frank said

He earned it. Abigail said

Well, so have you. I'll tell you what. Why don't I come by after dinner talk a little walk around the pond just half an hour. Give us a chance to catch up. Frank said

It doesn't take half an hour to walk around the pond. Abigail said

Well walk slow. Frank said

(Chuckling)

So, pastor... how are you and miss Abigail doing? John Said

That's none of your business frank said

She got money? John said

What do you want, John ? frank said

Well, the gang's back together again. There's a job coming up. We'll need you. You're the best powder man around. John said

I'm not interested. Frank said

Come on Matt. You'd make so much money you wouldn't have to worry about keeping up this act any longer. You could go anywhere do anything you want. John said

I'm happy living right here, doing just what I'm doing. Frank said

Great. When it's over, come back, get married have nine kids. John said

You're not listening. I'm out frank said

You're never out. You don't want to disappoint Justin garrison, do you? John said

Is that a threat? Frank said

Just saying people get hurt sometimes. John said

(As walk crossing Main Street) (chuckles)

Let me apologize about dinner at the jail. Jack said

It's the thought that counts Elizabeth said

I know. I want to make it up to you, though. Jack said

How? Elizabeth said

A snack in the stables? Jack said

Jack! (Laughs) even better... I have a place where we can have dinner any time we like. Elizabeth said

Well,yeah. Abigail's? Jack said

No... Elizabeth's Elizabeth said

The row house? Jack said

As of this morning, it's mine. Elizabeth said

(Both chuckling) (sometime later) at row house

So I saved some extra money for my teaching salary by living at Abigail's and the rent here isn't very much so I thought, why not? Besides with Corey and Clara here Abigail could really use the extra room. And now that I finally have some peace and quiet I can start writing again. Elizabeth said

Old joe crossing didn't really take care of this place as well as Abigail did but it'll make a fine house one day. loose doorknob and all jack said

But it's my loose doorknob. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Clara! Are my blueberry muffins ready? I know I'm early. But I promised to serve tea at the mill in an hour. Rosemary said

I'll get them for you. Clara said

Hmm. Oh! Cave junction. I've heard of that that's where the stage was robbed... (gasps) And Dottie's brother was killed. Oh. Such a terrible tragedy. Are you on the case? Rosemary said

Maybe. And maybe not. Can I trust you with that, Rosemary? Bill said

You have my word. I won't say a peep to anyone. Rosemary said

Bless you. Abigail bill said

Bill Abigail said

Are you aware the sink is leaking? mr. Humphrey said

(Exhales heavily) yes Abigail said

You'll need to get it fixed. Immediately I've made a list of improvements. You'll be expected to cover half the costs. mr. Humphrey said

There is nothing wrong with the stove. Abigail said

It's only a matter of time until that antique stops working mr. Humphrey said

And when it does, I will get a new one. Abigail said

You'll get one now mr. Humphrey said

Before you close your deal with mr. Humphrey I would like to make a counteroffer Abigail said

You've already told me that you don't have the funds to buy me out Martin said

I don't but maybe we can come up with some kind of arrangement something that would be beneficial to you Abigail said

I'm listening Martin said

I could monthly payments, with interest, until your share is paid. That's more than fair. Abigail said

I'm a businessman, Mrs Stanton. Unfortunately uh... you're not an acceptable risk Martin said

Meanwhile in town as jack Walks Elizabeth to cafe and carries her books from school

I can pick up some varnish from the mercantile if you want to start on those floors tonight jack said

Thank you but I would like to do the repairs myself. Elizabeth said

At least let me help you move your things in. Jack said

I'll take you up on that thank you. Elizabeth said

Elizabeth Abigail said

Hi. Elizabeth said

I just spoke to Corey and he said you held him after class. Abigail said

I didn't want to, but he was late again for the third time this week. Elizabeth said

He practices baseball before school. He just wants to fit in. Abigail said

He still needs to be on time. Elizabeth said

Well, boys will be boys. Abigail said

They still have to get to school on time. Elizabeth said

Well, it's a big adjustment for him Abigail said

Abigail, it's not just his attendance he doesn't pay attention and he hasn't turned in his homework Elizabeth said

He's having a hard time being back in school after everything he's been through. Abigail said

He needs to try a little harder Elizabeth said

You think I'm being too easy on him? Abigail said

I think you're being overprotective and I understand why. I just don't think it's helping him. Elizabeth said

Well thank you for your opinion Abigail said

Abigail we all want what's best for Corey and you're doing everything you can I'm just trying to help Elizabeth said

I know you are Abigail said

Meanwhile at the stables

It's not that I'm surprised she moved out on her own I...I just didn't think it would happen so soon Jack said

Mmm, and you're not sure how you feel about it? Lee said

(Sighs) look I like that she's an independent woman, but...Jack said

This doesn't have anything to do with that house you want to build, does it? Lee said

Maybe jack said

Ah! Look, I'd take it as a good sign. Mean she's putting down roots here in valley spring . Moving away from Hamilton. Lee said

Well, then that's a very good sign. Jack said

You bet it is. Woman like to make a place their own. It's called "nesting." Lee said

It's "nesting" ? Jack said

Nesting! You know today you know Elizabeth moves into her place down the road, maybe she moves into yours. Just be patient, and buy her a nice housewarming gift. Huh? Lee said

All right. Jack said

So ... what do you think? Rosemary said

Nesting jack said "to Lee in a whisper"

Sometimes later that afternoon at Elizabeth's new home

(Sighs) my worldly possessions! Elizabeth said

(Jack chuckles)

Those who would travel happily must travel light. Jack said

At least I have a desk to write on Elizabeth said

Hmm... something's missing. Jack said

(as he bent down for something under the desk A pond some of the crates and boxes)

What is this? Elizabeth said

It's housewarming gift. Jack said

Is it an ice box? I could really use an ice box. Elizabeth said

(Charles) just open it. Jack said

Oh, jack. It's gorgeous Elizabeth said

(Chuckles) now I just need to get you some flowers. Jack said

It's perfect just as it is. Elizabeth said

Just like you. Jack said

Meanwhile at the saloon

I've been thinking about what you said, about moving here Rorà said

And? Martin said

I'd have to go home for a while and finish up a few things. Rorà said

Well, take whatever time you need. Martin said

If everything works out, I should be back in a month or so. Rorà said

Well, I will be here. Martin said

Martin, I'm uneasy about something. Rorà said

Does it have to do with bill? Martin said

No. We've signed the divorce papers. That's over. But if I'm going to make Valley spring , I need to apologize to Abigail Stanton. Rorà said

That wasn't your fault. Martin said

It wasn't hers either. Rorà said

Outside on the main sidewalk in the middle of town

Frank? I thought we were going for a walk. Abigail said

Plan changed. Frank said

Oh. Maybe tomorrow? Abigail said

No, tomorrow no good. Frank said

Sunday? Abigail said

Sunday won't work. Frank said

Frank, I'm confused you said you wanted to catch up. Abigail said

(Sighs heavily) it'll have to wait. Frank said

Oh. Well... I'm sorry to bother you. Abigail said

The next day

For our science project we are going to plant beans in cans and learn about photosynthesis. (chalk scribbling) now, since this is a group project I'd like for you all to choose partners. Elizabeth said

Miss thatcher? Corey said

Mmm? Elizabeth said

I don't have a partner Corey said

Oh. I'm... well, you can be partners with miles and Robert. Elizabeth said

Everyone has friends but me Corey said

You're new. It takes time to make friends at a new school. Elizabeth said

(Sighs) I don't want to be partners with anyone Corey said

This isn't a choice, Corey. Everyone is going to participate. Come on. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile in town at jailhouse

Find anything at cave junction? Jack said

Not much, à few hoof prints, some spent casings. Bill said

Justin garrison And his gang are suspects in robbery, but HQ doesn't enough evidence for an arrest. Jack said

I had a feeling it was garrison. Bill said

What? You know him? Jack said

I've chased him before. He killed a good friend of mine in a bank robbery ten years ago. Carlos Benjamin left behind a widow and an eight-year-old daughter. Bill said

(Jack Exhales deeply) you never arrested him? Jack said

No. Not enough evidence. This guy's an expert at covering his tracks jack. He picks up a gang when he needs one, then he lets them go when he doesn't bill said

They were spotted near Albert hills. That might mean they're headed East Jack said

I'll help you on patrols. Can't be too careful. Bill said

Well... this means you're gonna turn down the pinkest's ? Jack said

No, it means the garrison gang is not gonna get anywhere near valley spring . Bill said

That afternoon as school gets out

Hi Corey Abigail said

I hate school. I'm never going back. Corey said

Tell me what happened. Abigail said

Nobody likes me. I don't have any friends. Corey said

Corey, you haven't been here very long. You have to give it some time. Abigail said

At least when we were on our own i had Bridgett Corey said

Sweetheart I know you miss your sister but right now, she needs to be with the doctors in lost hills. They're helping her get better. Abigail said

When she gets better, could I visit her? Corey said

Of course you can. But until then, there are other ways to show someone that you care about them. Abigail said

How? Corey said

You could write her a letter. Tell her all the things that you would say to her if she was sitting right next to you. Abigail said

Well you help me? Corey said

Of course I will. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

Hello. Dottie said

Dottie! It's good to see you out. Does the mayor have you working already? Bill said

No. He told me to take the rest of the week off. Dottie said

Well, that was nice of him. Bill said

He's not all bad. You don't know him the way I do. Dottie said

I know him all too well. Bill said

Well he could've fired me when he was out of money, but he didn't. Trust me, there is another side to Martin Gowen. Dottie said

Who's that man he's with? Bill said (gazing out the window of the store)

Allen Humphrey he's buying Martin's share of the cafe Dottie said

I hadn't heard you know anything about him? bill said

Not very much. But, um... I have a feeling Abigail is going to miss have Mayor Gowen as a partner. Dottie said

Meanwhile at school

I have a very fun writing assignment for all of you. I want to thank of a memory something from your past it can be happy or sad, it can be funny or scary ... it can be any memory that you like yes, Emily ? Elizabeth said

Can I write about the fall harvest? My mom let's me pick the biggest pumpkin 🎃 and we carve a jack-o-lantern. Emily said

That is a wonderful memory. Corey? Do you have a favorite memory? Elizabeth said

It's stupid Corey said

No, it isn't Elizabeth said

Well... my dad would say we were soldiers in the light brigade. Corey said

He's right. That is stupid Robert said

(Students Laughing)

Robert! Elizabeth said

Take it back! Corey said

Whoa. That's enough, boys. Elizabeth said

(As she Palls Corey of Robert)

Now apologize to one other. Elizabeth said

Sorry Corey and Robert said

That's all for today everyone I'll collect your writing assignment tomorrow morning class dismissed. Corey? You're not in trouble tell me the rest of the story about your dad and the light brigade. Elizabeth said

We used to ride horses, he would say, "honor the charge they made, honor the light brigade." Corey said

I was think since you didn't turn in your paper about Marco Polo, maybe you'd like to write about "the charge of the light brigade"? What do you think? Elizabeth said

Okay Corey said

Meanwhile at the cafe (as Clara Bring his dirty dishes or the kitchen sink)

Oh! (Chuckles) Clara said

For you. John said

Oh, John they're beautiful. Clara said

Because I was actually gonna ask you a favor John said

Oh? What kind of favor? Clara said

I'm still trying to find my way around and I was wondering if you could show me where the livery is. John said

Didn't I see you at the livery yesterday? Clara said

Right. Ha. How about the blacksmith? John said

Around the corner from the livery Clara said

It's a good place for it (awkward chuckle) John said

Oh. Those are lovely. What's the occasion? Abigail said

I was asking Clara if she'd like to go for a walk with me John said

I really need to stay and help Abigail. Clara said

Doesn't look so busy. Can you manage without her. John said

I'll only be gone an hour promise Clara said

You don't see country like this where I come from. John said

I don't think you told me where you're from Clara said

Uh, small town back east. John said

Hmm. Clara said

Family has a farm there there's really not much to tell. John said

So you came west in search of fame and fortune? Clara said

(Chuckles) you hear that story a lot, I guess, I'm going to ask you a bold question, before I make a fool out of myself. John said

Should I be worried? Clara said

No no, nothing like that. I was just wondering, are there any other handsome, charming gentlemen bringing you flowers at work? John said

(Chuckles) you'll be happy to know that was a first. Clara said

Meanwhile in town at jailhouse (loud thudding sound)

Ah. You got a good arm. But you need a better grip. See and now you try it there you go bill said

Thank,mister! Corey said

You keep throwing like that, and they'll notice you soon enough bill said

Meanwhile at Elizabeth house parenting sounds

Hello! Abigail said

(Gasps) ha! Elizabeth said

(Both laughing)

Don't you look the part! Abigail said

(Grunts) yet I have somehow managed to make the creak in this floorboard worse than ever. Elizabeth said

Impossible. It's always been like that. Gosh, I've missed this place. Abigail said

You have a lot of good memories here, don't you? Elizabeth said

(Sighs) I do it looks different. Abigail said

Well, mr. crossing was never one to concern himself with appearance, was he? Elizabeth said

Apparently not. What's next on your list? Abigail said

Oh, an ice box, fix the doorknob, clean the chimney, a fresh coat of paint. Yep. I'm practically finished. Elizabeth said

(Chuckles) why don't I help you later? We'll have a painting party. Abigail said

I would love that. Elizabeth said

I'll bring Corey. Abigail said

How's he doing? Elizabeth said

Good. I told him he had to finish his essay before he went out to play. Abigail said

He'll come around Elizabeth said

Mmm. I wish someone else would come around. Abigail said

Frank? Elizabeth said

I thought something was starting happen between the two of us, but now nothing. Abigail said

You're really starting to care for him, aren't you? Elizabeth said

(Sighs) Maybe more than I should, muffin? Abigail said

Please. Elizabeth said

Fresh out of the oven. Abigail said

These are so... Elizabeth said

Yes, they're good Abigail said

Blueberry! Elizabeth said

Mmm-hmm Abigail said

Meanwhile in town

I've gotta be honest,Lee this is uh... a little more than I was expecting. Jack said

And that is with a sizable discount because we're friends, but the house that you're about isn't exactly a shanty trust me, I promise, it's gonna be worth every penny. Lee said

Okay, so I hear the architect finished plans for Rosemary's new theater. Jack said

Uh, valley spring theater just don't tell her. Lee said

(Laughs) right. Well it seems like a pretty big project to take on right when you're trying to double the size of your operation jack said

Yeah, well, you know me. I like big projects. See you jack. Lee said

(Boys chanting) ( fight! Fight, Fight! Fight!)

hey! Hey! What's going on here? Get up. What's happening? Jack said

He started it! Robert said

Liar! He did! Corey said

(The boys panting at one other)

Okay. Robert, go home. Rest of you, too. Go on now. You wanna tell me what happened? Jack said

He called me an orphan. Corey said

So you hit him? Jack said

Are you gonna tell Mrs. Stanton? Corey said

I should. But I'll tell you what. You go home you go finish your homework, no one else needs to know about it. Jack said

You promised you won't tell? Corey said

Yeah, kid, I promise. Corey no more fights. Jack said

Meanwhile at the mercantile (footsteps approaching)

Well, Elizabeth Letcher look at you. You're so... capable-looking! Rosemary said

Capable, and a little overwhelmed. Elizabeth said

Oh, Rosemary said

I had no idea how much work went into fixing up a house. Elizabeth said

(Chuckles) for Rosemary

The stove, the floors, the painting... Elizabeth said

I thought you'd just ask jack to do all that. Rosemary said

Well, he offered, but I'm trying to do it all on my own. Elizabeth said

Men are peculiar creatures they like to feel needed, and important. I get letters about it all the time Rosemary said

All right, but if I let jack take care of everything what do I learn? How to hand him tools while he does all the work? Elizabeth said

Oh, Elizabeth. It's simple, just give him something else to do. As I tell my readers, "keep your man busy, so he isn't in a tizzy." Rosemary said

Frank. We need to talk. Abigail said

I can't right now. Frank said

Well, fine, then just listen. I know you're keeping something from me and whatever it is, no matter how bad it is, I've been thought worse, And one thing I know ... I couldn't have made it on my own so whenever you're ready, I'm here. You don't have to go through it alone. You have someone you can lean on. Abigail said

I just hope you remember that when the time comes. Frank said

You got enough firewood to last two winters. Jack said

Glad to know I'll stay warm. Elizabeth said

(Jack Exhales deeply) well, there are... other ways to stay warm. Jack said

Um... a stove? A campfire or... maybe even a blanket? Elizabeth said

That's not exactly what I have in mind. Jack said

Well... should I keep guessing, or are you going to get more firewood? Elizabeth said

No no, I stacked the rest of it out the back. Jack said

(Both laughing)

Are you sure I can't give you a head with anything else? Jack said

As a matter of fact, I do have a small favor to ask Elizabeth said

Well, name it. Jack said

There's a big spider behind the bed upstairs. Do you think you could catch it and put it outside? Elizabeth said

Spider? Jack said

Mmm-mmm maybe even a family of spiders two or... three and... and you know how much I hate spiders. Elizabeth said

I do. "keep your man busy, so he isn't in a tizzy." I read Rosemary's column, too. Jack said

That night at saloon (door opening)

Are you looking for this? (Gun cocks) (Laughs) I'm just ...messing with you Santino said

What do you want, santino ? John said

Well, jake asked me to stop by, see how you're doing. He wants to know if you made any progress with Matt Santino said

Tell jake I'm doing the best I can. John said

Why don't you tell him? Santino said

That gold train's gonna be coming in through Albert hills real soon tick-tick. Jake said

(Door closes)

I'll take care of it John said

Yeah you better. You promised me Matt Landry I don't like when someone welches on a promise. Jake said

The next morning

(Metal scraping) bill what are you doing here? Abigail said

Making breakfast. Bill said

With my pans and my eggs? Abigail said

Well it seems to me that I'm your best option. Bill said

Oh, really? Abigail said

Well I'm not here to give you a list of things that you need to fix, like Humphrey did. Took me about ten minutes to try to figure out how to light this stove, so, trust me, I have no interest in sticking my nose into your day-to-day operations bill said

So you'll be a silent partner? Abigail said

In every way well, I thought I'm going to enjoy owning this place... as much as I enjoy eating here. So ... we're good? Partner Bill said

Good partner. Abigail said

A little bit later for the morning stage where is departing (horses neighing, grunting)

All right, I have something for you, before you go. Martin said

What's this? (Gasps) oh... Martin! It's beautiful Rorà said

Do you remember what you said to me the first time we met? You were having lunch with some friends of yours at the restaurant across the street from my office. It was my first day at the mining company in Hamilton Martin said

And you stroller over in your new suit and your shiny, black shoes, and you asked "do you happen to have the time?" Rorà said

Mmm-hmm and you pointed to the clock tower behind me Martin said

(Laughs) that was mean of me. Rorà said

Maybe so, but you uh... you know from here on in wherever you go, you uh, you'll always have the time. Martin said

Thank you Martin said

Anything else you need today? Katie said

This'll do for now, just a few supplies for mr. County's office. You can add them to lee's company account Rosemary said

I wish I could, but I can't Katie said

Can't? Why not? Rosemary said

Mr. County's account is overdue Katie said

Overdue? No, that must be a mistake. Rosemary said

I'm so sorry , but my father said no more credit. Katie said

How odd. I would why Lee never told me. Uh, it doesn't matter. I'll just pay cash. Rosemary said

Meanwhile at Elizabeth house

(Piano music playing) (sighs) hello? Jack said

Hey! Elizabeth said

We brought new paint for you. Jack said

Just in time! Corey? Would you like to help us? Elizabeth said

No Corey said

(Door closes)

Corey, put down the baseball and help miss thatcher, please. Abigail said

Here Corey, you can use this. Elizabeth said

No thanks. Corey said

(Awkward chuckle) once he puts that glove on, he's lost to the world. Abigail said

Men and sport I'll never understand it All right Corey. Why don't you tell us about your essay on "the charge of the light brigade"? Elizabeth said

Oh, I love that poem it's one of my favorites. Jack said

It's due tomorrow Elizabeth said

Corey, enough of that he'll do the essay when we get home I promise. Abigail said

Hey, jack catch! Corey said

Whoa, whoa jack said

No! Elizabeth said

(Loud gasping)(glass shattering)

Corey what did I tell you? Now please get that broom and clean up this mess. Abigail said

I don't have to listen to you! Corey said

Yes you do. Abigail said

Corey, you need to do as you're told. Jack said

You're not my father! Corey said

(The back Door opens)

Corey! Abigail said

Abigail... I'll get him jack said

(Sounds of glass being step on as the front door opens and Shut closed)

Okay. Hey hey! Hey! Jack said

Let me go! Corey said

No. Jack said

I hate you! I hate all of you! Corey said

Hey, Corey. No, you don't. You don't hate me. You don't hate any of us. You're upset because you miss your daddy. It's why you won't finish that essay. It's why you're getting in fights. Because it hurts to think about him, it hurts to be alone. It hurts to not have the people that you love to tell you it's gonna be okay. Jack said

You don't know anything! Corey said

Yeah, I do... cause I lost my dad too (Exhales deeply) it feels like someone took something from you...like there's a giant hole inside of you. But one day, that... that feeling that you're right now... that feeling is gonna go away. I promise. Jack said

It's not fair. Corey said

No, it's not fair at all kid. But just because your parents aren't here doesn't mean they're not worth you. You got them right in here every moment of every day okay? Jack said

(As Corey Hag jack both Abigail and Elizabeth are softly crying for the boys don't know the window that is a bum is open and they've heard everything)

As Elizabeth writers a letter home to her family I can't describe how it feels to have my own house teaching will always be first in my heart but now that I'm settled in, i can finally pursue my passion for writing. I want to capture the spirit of this special place, of the love and the caring, so that I can share it with the world. There's nowhere else on earth like valley spring , though I miss you and mother very much. With love and prayers your devoted daughter Elizabeth.

Meanwhile at sawmill

Ask Ned yost to order the fabric we spoke about... the velour in red. Or maroon, actually, if they have it. I'll need about 20 yards. Mmm... better make it 30. Yes. 30 should do. Rosemary said

Mr. County's okay with this? Hickman said

Of course he is. Rosemary said

(Door opens)

Hey, where's he going? Lee said

He's helping me redecorates. Rosemary said

Oh, I think it's plenty decorated as it is. Lee said

Oh! Lee no. This is just the beginning. Picture it... a raised mahogany desk and chair. it'll be an office fit for a king Rosemary said

And why exactly do I need a raised desk? Lee said

Well you're the boss! The man in charge. The fearless leader! Rosemary said

I like my office the way it is. Lee said

I'm just trying to breathe some life into this dingy, old place, which it desperately needs. Rosemary said

Where's my map? Lee said

Which map? Rosemary said

What do you mean, "which map" my map! The big map that was right here on this wall above the fireplace. Lee said

Oh, that tattered old thing? I threw it out Rosemary said

you what? Lee said

Well don't worry I ordered you a new one from the survey office. You'll love it! It's in color. Rosemary said

Rosemary that map had all of my harvest schedules written on it lee said

Well, I'm sure it's written down somewhere. Oh and before I forget I gave glen butterflies the rest of the day off Rosemary said

You ... whoa whoa wait. What do you mean you gave him the rest of the day off? Lee said

Well, of course I told him it was your idea. You are the boss. Rosemary said

Sometimes I wonder about that. Wha... (Door bangs shut) what just happened? Lee said

Meanwhile on the edge of town

Well it's almost lunchtime at the cafe. I better get back. Abigail said

I think should take some time off. Frank said

(Laughs) I have to work. Abigail said

Oh, even the man upstairs took a break on the seventh day. Frank said

He earned it. Abigail said

Well, so have you. I'll tell you what. Why don't I come by after dinner talk a little walk around the pond just half an hour. Give us a chance to catch up. Frank said

It doesn't take half an hour to walk around the pond. Abigail said

Well walk slow. Frank said

(Chuckling)

So, pastor... how are you and miss Abigail doing? John Said

That's none of your business frank said

She got money? John said

What do you want, John ? frank said

Well, the gang's back together again. There's a job coming up. We'll need you. You're the best powder man around. John said

I'm not interested. Frank said

Come on Matt. You'd make so much money you wouldn't have to worry about keeping up this act any longer. You could go anywhere do anything you want. John said

I'm happy living right here, doing just what I'm doing. Frank said

Great. When it's over, come back, get married have nine kids. John said

You're not listening. I'm out frank said

You're never out. You don't want to disappoint Justin garrison, do you? John said

Is that a threat? Frank said

Just saying people get hurt sometimes. John said

(As walk crossing Main Street) (chuckles)

Let me apologize about dinner at the jail. Jack said

It's the thought that counts Elizabeth said

I know. I want to make it up to you, though. Jack said

How? Elizabeth said

A snack in the stables? Jack said

Jack! (Laughs) even better... I have a place where we can have dinner any time we like. Elizabeth said

Well,yeah. Abigail's? Jack said

No... Elizabeth's Elizabeth said

The row house? Jack said

As of this morning, it's mine. Elizabeth said

(Both chuckling) (sometime later) at row house

So I saved some extra money for my teaching salary by living at Abigail's and the rent here isn't very much so I thought, why not? Besides with Corey and Clara here Abigail could really use the extra room. And now that I finally have some peace and quiet I can start writing again. Elizabeth said

Old joe crossing didn't really take care of this place as well as Abigail did but it'll make a fine house one day. loose doorknob and all jack said

But it's my loose doorknob. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Clara! Are my blueberry muffins ready? I know I'm early. But I promised to serve tea at the mill in an hour. Rosemary said

I'll get them for you. Clara said

Hmm. Oh! Cave junction. I've heard of that that's where the stage was robbed... (gasps) And Dottie's brother was killed. Oh. Such a terrible tragedy. Are you on the case? Rosemary said

Maybe. And maybe not. Can I trust you with that, Rosemary? Bill said

You have my word. I won't say a peep to anyone. Rosemary said

Bless you. Abigail bill said

Bill Abigail said

Are you aware the sink is leaking? mr. Humphrey said

(Exhales heavily) yes Abigail said

You'll need to get it fixed. Immediately I've made a list of improvements. You'll be expected to cover half the costs. mr. Humphrey said

There is nothing wrong with the stove. Abigail said

It's only a matter of time until that antique stops working mr. Humphrey said

And when it does, I will get a new one. Abigail said

You'll get one now mr. Humphrey said

Before you close your deal with mr. Humphrey I would like to make a counteroffer Abigail said

You've already told me that you don't have the funds to buy me out Martin said

I don't but maybe we can come up with some kind of arrangement something that would be beneficial to you Abigail said

I'm listening Martin said

I could monthly payments, with interest, until your share is paid. That's more than fair. Abigail said

I'm a businessman, Mrs Stanton. Unfortunately uh... you're not an acceptable risk Martin said

Meanwhile in town as jack Walks Elizabeth to cafe and carries her books from school

Mmm, and you're not sure how you feel about it? Lee said

(Sighs) look I like that she's an independent woman, but...Jack said

This doesn't have anything to do with that house you want to build, does it? Lee said

Maybe jack said

Ah! Look, I'd take it as a good sign. Mean she's putting down roots here in valley spring . Moving away from Hamilton. Lee said

Well, then that's a very good sign. Jack said

You bet it is. Woman like to make a place their own. It's called "nesting." Lee said

It's "nesting" ? Jack said

Nesting! You know today you know Elizabeth moves into her place down the road, maybe she moves into yours. Just be patient, and buy her a nice housewarming gift. Huh? Lee said

All right. Jack said

So ... what do you think? Rosemary said

Nesting jack said "to Lee in a whisper"

Sometimes later that afternoon at Elizabeth's new home

(Sighs) my worldly possessions! Elizabeth said

(Jack chuckles)

Those who would travel happily must travel light. Jack said

At least I have a desk to write on Elizabeth said

Hmm... something's missing. Jack said

(as he bent down for something under the desk A pond some of the crates and boxes)

What is this? Elizabeth said

It's housewarming gift. Jack said

Is it an ice box? I could really use an ice box. Elizabeth said

(Charles) just open it. Jack said

Oh, jack. It's gorgeous Elizabeth said

(Chuckles) now I just need to get you some flowers. Jack said

It's perfect just as it is. Elizabeth said

Just like you. Jack said

Meanwhile at the saloon

I've been thinking about what you said, about moving here Rorà said

And? Martin said

I'd have to go home for a while and finish up a few things. Rorà said

Well, take whatever time you need. Martin said

If everything works out, I should be back in a month or so. Rorà said

Well, I will be here. Martin said

Martin, I'm uneasy about something. Rorà said

Does it have to do with bill? Martin said

No. We've signed the divorce papers. That's over. But if I'm going to make Valley spring , I need to apologize to Abigail Stanton. Rorà said

That wasn't your fault. Martin said

It wasn't hers either. Rorà said

Outside on the main sidewalk in the middle of town

Frank? I thought we were going for a walk. Abigail said

Plan changed. Frank said

Oh. Maybe tomorrow? Abigail said

No, tomorrow no good. Frank said

Sunday? Abigail said

Sunday won't work. Frank said

Frank, I'm confused you said you wanted to catch up. Abigail said

(Sighs heavily) it'll have to wait. Frank said

Oh. Well... I'm sorry to bother you. Abigail said

The next day

For our science project we are going to plant beans in cans and learn about photosynthesis. (chalk scribbling) now, since this is a group project I'd like for you all to choose partners. Elizabeth said

Miss thatcher? Corey said

Mmm? Elizabeth said

I don't have a partner Corey said

Oh. I'm... well, you can be partners with miles and Robert. Elizabeth said

Everyone has friends but me Corey said

You're new. It takes time to make friends at a new school. Elizabeth said

(Sighs) I don't want to be partners with anyone Corey said

This isn't a choice, Corey. Everyone is going to participate. Come on. Elizabeth said

Dottie said

That is a wonderful memory. Corey? Do you have a favorite memory? Elizabeth said

It's stupid Corey said

No, it isn't Elizabeth said

He's right. That is stupid Robert said

(Students Laughing)

(As she Palls Corey of Robert)

Now apologize to one other. Elizabeth said

Sorry Corey and Robert said

We used to ride horses, he would say, "honor the charge they made, honor the light brigade." Corey said

I was think since you didn't turn in your paper about Marco Polo, maybe you'd like to write about "the charge of the light brigade"? What do you think? Elizabeth said

Okay Corey said

Meanwhile at the cafe (as Clara Bring his dirty dishes or the kitchen sink)

(Both laughing)

Don't you look the part! Abigail said

(Grunts) yet I have somehow managed to make the creak in this floorboard worse than ever. Elizabeth said

Impossible. It's always been like that. Gosh, I've missed this place. Abigail said

You have a lot of good memories here, don't you? Elizabeth said

(Sighs) I do it looks different. Abigail said

Well, mr. crossing was never one to concern himself with appearance, was he? Elizabeth said

Apparently not. What's next on your list? Abigail said

Oh, an ice box, fix the doorknob, clean the chimney, a fresh coat of paint. Yep. I'm practically finished. Elizabeth said

(Chuckles) why don't I help you later? We'll have a painting party. Abigail said

I would love that. Elizabeth said

I'll bring Corey. Abigail said

How's he doing? Elizabeth said

Good. I told him he had to finish his essay before he went out to play. Abigail said

He'll come around Elizabeth said

Mmm. I wish someone else would come around. Abigail said

Making breakfast. Bill said

With my pans and my eggs? Abigail said

Without asking me first? Abigail said

I'm not here to cause any trouble Abigail I'm just a smart investor bill said

I don't know ... this is a bit much I need to think about it.

The next morning

"honor the charge they made! Corey said on horseback

"Honor the light brigade!" Jack and Corey said

Is it too early to be optimistic? Abigail said

You know, there are gonna be good days and bad days Elizabeth said

You're right, but I think this is a good start. Abigail said

What you're doing for Corey,Abigail it reminds me of the things I admire most about you. Elizabeth said

What's that? Abigail said

You don't give up on people. Elizabeth said

Oh, Elizabeth. You're such a good friend. I'm gonna miss have you under my roof. Abigail said

I will be just down the street and I'll see you every day. Elizabeth said

You promis? Abigail said

I promise! (Both Laughs) what's that? Elizabeth said

It's frank.( as she rips off A wanted notification nailed to the café door) I can't believe this. It's got to a forgery, or some awful joke. Abigail said

We'll know more soon. Elizabeth said

Frank said he had a past that he'd been shot, but this? Abigail said

The best thing you can do is just open the cafe and carry on until jack hears from the Police department or the Mounties. Elizabeth said

I can't, not until I know, and there's no reason for you to sit here waiting with me. Abigail said

There's every reason. Elizabeth said

You have school this afternoon Abigail said

And you have a cafe to run. Elizabeth said

(Door opens)

Hamilton police department HQ finally wired me back. Matt Landry was on our "wanted" list. Jack said

Was? Abigail said

Five years ago, as an accomplice in a bank robbery in Fresno, but he was caught and he served his time. Jack said

Then this is old and out of date? Elizabeth said

There's no current warrants for either Matt Landry or frank hagan jack said

So he's not a wanted man after all. Elizabeth said

No, I'm not. Been doing some thinking and some praying. I made up my mind to tell you all about Matt Landry, but I see someone has beat me to punch. It must be John Jeffrey. Frank said

John said that he was in town looking for a friend named Matt Landry. Abigail said

Oh, we haven't been friends for a long time. John is trying to ruin my life here so that I'll join up with the garrison gang again but it's gonna happen. Matt Landry is dead Frank said

Who was Matt Landry? Abigail said

A greedy fool. Tried to be a bandit. Got himself shot. He want to prison and found the good book and when he come out he was a new man and he wanted a new life and a new name frank said

So Matt Landry became frank hogan jack said

Mmm-hmm legally. I went to court and had it changed and that's when I swore that I would to devote the rest of my life to doing God's work. Frank said

So why is Justin garrison so set on dragging you back in? Jack said

Well, my best guess is that he's planning a robbery I used to be a powder man. Frank said

I'll let the office know get extra patrols in the territory. Elizabeth I'll walk you to school? Jack said

Yes, check on you later. (Jack opens the door) Thank you. (Once outside the café) poor Abigail. It seems like every time she has feelings for a man, he turns out to be keeping some secret. Elizabeth said

And it's never a good one. Jack said

Meanwhile at the cafe

You were really coming to tell me? Abigail said

I swear. Frank said

I want to believe you but...Abigail said

I know. The timing's suspicions. You said that you would be someone to lean on and I asked you to remember that when the time came. Frank said

Now the time has come. Abigail said

And it's easier said than done. Frank said

(Exhales sharply) I have to think about it. Abigail said

Meanwhile on the road to the schoolhouse

Do you think people in relationships can have "good" secrets? Elizabeth said

Sure. Every now and then. Jack said

I don't think it's a good idea. Elizabeth said

So you have no secrets? Jack said

Do you? Elizabeth said

Yeah. Well, one or two. (Chuckles) I'll gladly share them with you. Jack said

Please do! Elizabeth said

Okay. Well... The first time that we met, I thought you were... attractive. Jack said

(Chuckles) That's your deep, dark secret? Elizabeth said

Well, not anymore since you pried it out of me. Jack said

(Laughs Elizabeth)

Your turn jack said

All right. When we first met, I thought you were... kind of cute. Elizabeth said

"Kind of cute?" Jack said

(Laughs Elizabeth)

Not, like, "ruggedly cute"? Not even "handsome"? Jack said

Well, you did grow on me. Elizabeth said

Good morning Rosemary. Katie said

Good morning Katie. Bill! I had a lovely, little chat with Abigail yesterday. She mentioned that you two are partners in the cafe. Rosemary said

Yes I bought out Martin Gowen. Bill said

So tell me Isn't that a little bit awkward? Rosemary said

What do you mean "awkward"? Bill said

Well, considering what's gone on in the past between the two of you. Rosemary said

What are you getting at Rosemary? Bill said

(Giggles) nothing, really. Though I imagine it might be, uh, different to be in business together. Rosemary said

Well, I'm happy with my investment. Bill said

Oh, investment? Is that all it is ? (Chuckles) Rosemary said

That's all it is. Bill said

Hmm. So tell me. Well we see you in an apron any time soon? Rosemary said

Well, I don't know about an apron but I do have a recipe for a chicken casserole that's gonna have them lining up outside the door. Bill said

Mr. Avenue! You are full of surprises! I had no idea you could cook. Rosemary said

Rosemary, I spent two weeks undercover working as a chef. Not only did I catch two escaped cons, but I learned how to fricassée a pheasant. Bill said

(Laughs of two ladies)

Ladies. Bill said

Meanwhile at the saloon

Miss Ramsey, I've gone over your late brother's life insurance policy, and everything seems to be in order. Jay said

Oh, that's a relief. Dottie said

Once I submit the case file to the home office, you should see a benefit check within, oh... six to eight months. Jay said

I'm sorry, did you say months? Dottie said

Barring any complications. Jay said

But, I need the money now. Dottie said

Well, I understand, however, the company needs. Jay said

No. You Don't Understand. Can't you speed things along? Dottie said

Doesn't work that way. But... (he clears throat) if you really need the money now, I am authorized to offer you a lesser settlement in cash. Jay said

Oh... (stammers) well, how much less? Dottie said

One-fifth the benefit. Jay said

One-fifth? Oh, I... i don't... oh, I need to think about it. Dottie said

Well, I leave tomorrow at noon do let me know your decision before then. Jay said

(Outside the police office)

You're telling me that Frank Hogan rode with the garrison gang? Bill said

Under a different name, Five years ago. Jack said

I need to talk to him. Bill said

Look bill, I know how you feel about the garrisons, but frank wasn't in the gang ten years ago. Remember that. Jack said

I need you to do me a favor jack. I need you to find a woman named Mary Benjamin it's Carlos Benjamin's widow. Do that for me will you? Bill said

Sûre. Jack said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Are you sure John's part of that gang of criminals? Clara said

Frank is sure. He says that John's is the one who put the handbill on my door. Abigail said

And you believe him? Clara said

(Sighs) John didn't show up for work today. Jack's been looking for him everywhere he's nowhere in town. It's not a good sign. Abigail said

I guess it's not Clara said

Clara I know it's painful. We both lost a husband. It's tough enough to get through that and then have feelings for a new man. But it's even worse when that new man turns out to be— Abigail said

A liar and a criminal. Clara said

Outside of the cafe

I just can't imagine pastor hogan is an outlaw molly said

Neither could I. He seems like such a good man. We'll have to look into our next pastor's background much more thoroughly. Florence

Our next pastor? Molly said

We can't have an outlaw preaching from the pulpit, can we? Florence said

Ladies frank said

Not a lot of brotherly love around here. Bill said

Ah, can't say I blame them. I disappointed a lot of people here. frank said

Some more than others. Jack told me you rode with the garrison gang. Bill said

I did. Frank said

Ever mentioned a man named Carlos Benjamin? Bill said

No, but I only did a couple of jobs with garrison. I got shot got caught did my time. End of story. Frank said

What about this John kid? You think he had anything to do with the bank robbery that killed Silas? Bill said

No, John was here in town they sent him to get me. Besides, it's not his style. He's not a killer. Frank said

You let me know if you see him. Bill said

I didn't think you're still the law. Frank said

Just a concerned citizen bill said

(Car engine humming driver)

Constable! It would seem that Valley Springhas a problem. Martin said

What's that? Jack said

Well, our pastor is a fraud. He misled the pastoral committee who hired him. Martin said

Well, if he did lie about his criminal history, you might have a case for fraud. Jack said

I think it would be in everyone's best interest, including mr. Landry's if he resigned and left town peacefully Martin said

Mmm jack said

I wonder if you can take a little bit of time to convince him of that. Martin said

Uh, I'm sorry. I can't do that but have a nice day. Jack said

Outskirts of town (twig snaps) (man whistles a birdcall)

Matt's secret's all over town John said

That's good won't be long before they kick him out. You got something to say? Jake said

Matt's awful stubborn I still don't know if this gonna work. John said

Oh, sure it will. He's no fool. Where else is he gonna go? Jake said

Just in case maybe we should find somebody else. John said

There ain't no one else can do what we need doing. Jake said

I can John said

(Chuckles)

Take a lot of skill to blow a safe Santino said

Matt taught me everything he knows. John said

Teaching ain't doing. Jayden said

I'm not gonna gamble our payoff on what you think you know. Jake said

Okay. I'm just saying', if, for some reason, Matt doesn't come. John said

You said you and him were friends you swore you could bring him back. That was the deal. Now, if you don't deliver, you're a dead man Jake said

Meanwhile in town

Why is lee asking the bank for a loan? Rosemary said

I don't know Hickman said

You don't know, or you won't tell me? Rosemary said

When it comes to finance, mr. County plays things pretty close to the vest. Maybe it's something to do with the theater he's building. Hickman said

Mmm. Let's pretend this conversation never happened, all right? It'll be our little secret. Rosemary said

Meanwhile At school

In a democracy the people get to help decide how everything is run, and one way they can do that is by voting. (Door opens) Um, would everyone please turn to page 42 in your books 📚 to learn what the Greek philosophers had to say about it. Hi Elizabeth said

I'm sorry to interrupt but you know the campout that pastor hogan has scheduled for tomorrow night? Jack said

The boys have been talking about it all morning Elizabeth said

Well, so have their parents. Some of them have changed their minds they don't want their boys to go. Jack said

So it's been canceled? Elizabeth said

No, actually, uh, may I? Jack said

Mmm-hmm Elizabeth said

Thanks, uh, everyone can I have your attention, please? Those who signed up for tomorrow's campout please raise your hands Jack said

I know it wasn't gonna happen Corey said

No no it's happening, Corey but unfortunately pastor hogan cannot make it, so I'm gonna be going instead yeah Laurel jack said

Do girls get to go, too? Laurel said

Um, sorry, this one is just for the boys. Jack said

I don't see why the girls can't go Emily said

Yeah! Opal said

well, uh maybe, uh, next time when we can all plan ahead, okay? thanks. Jack said

Uh-huh Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Dottie? What's the matter? Bill said

from the insurance company says it's going to take months to pay the benefits on Silas's policy Dottie said

Why the delay? Bill said

I don't know. He said he'll give me cash right now, but I have to waive the rest of the benefits. Dottie Said

Well, that doesn't sound right. Bill Said

I don't want to settle for less than I'm owed, but I can't wait. Dottie Said

Would you let me help you? Bill said

What can you do? Dottie said

Oh, I... I have a knack for helping people see reason. Bill Said

Meanwhile at back well hanging laundry out doors to dry

Before you ask, no I haven't seen frank since this morning. Abigail said

I didn't ask Elizabeth said

I don't know what I'd say to him. I don't Know what I'd want him to said to me Abigail said

May I ask you what you're feeling? Elizabeth said

I don't know, so there's no reason to tell me to bottle things up. Abigail said

Then I won't Elizabeth said

I could sue a little "you're strong, you'll get through this." Abigail said

You are the strongest woman I've ever met, Abigail. You'll get through this. Elizabeth said

You always know just what to say. Abigail said

You'll get through it a lot faster if you just talk to frank. Elizabeth said

Miss Abigail? Where's those marshmallows you made for us? Corey Said

In the pantry. Abigail said

Can't camp out without marshmallows. Corey said

There's no arguing with that! Elizabeth said

I'm glad that jack is leading the trip tomorrow Corey's gonna have a good time. Abigail. said

It's too bed it's boys-only. It's not really fair to the girls. Elizabeth said

Elizabeth, you are the most creative woman I know. You'll solve this. Not that you asked. Abigail said

The next evening

Okay, we are almost here. Jack said

We're not the only ones. Corey said

Elizabeth? Jack said

Good evening, Jack. Elizabeth said

What are... What are you doing here? Jack said

Well, I asked the girls if they wanted a little campout of their own. Elizabeth said

And we voted yes! Emily said

Democracy in action a girl said

Great. The thing is, you can't be, uh, here. Jack said

Isn't this public land? Elizabeth said

Yeah, but I mean, this... this was gonna be our spot jack said

I think that's room enough for everyone. Elizabeth said Right. Okay. Uh, okay, boys, let's make camp over there. Jack said

Uh, no, jack, not over there Elizabeth said

Uh, why not? Jack said

Because it's covered in poison ivy. Elizabeth said (Girls giggling)

All right, not there, boys. Uh... make camp over here. Thanks, girls. Jack said

Back to work! Elizabeth said

Meanwhile in town at lee office

Good evening, lee. Rosemary said

Hello Lee said

I bought those supplies you asked for. Rosemary said

Wow I think I'm in the wrong business. Make more money if I turned my sawmill into a paper mill. Lee said

Speaking of money Rosemary said

Mmm Lee said

Funny that. Katie yost told me your account was overdue Rosemary said

Really? Hmm. I don't know if they sent me a bill last month or maybe they did, and it's just lost under all this mess. Anyway, thank you, I'll take care of it. Lee said

So it's just a misunderstanding? Rosemary said

Of course, yeah, just a misunderstanding. Lee said

Lee... I really have enjoyed helping out around here. Rosemary said

And I really appreciated having you. But you're not gonna offer to redecorate my office again, are you? Lee said

No. Uh... but I could help you economize. Rosemary said

Economize. Lee said

Streamline. Be more efficient. Cut out the waste. Improve the bottom line. Rosemary said

(Exhales) well saving money never hurts. Lee said

Well, that's right! And you're so busy already. Why don't you let me try out a few ideas? A thrift place. Cutting expenditures can boost your profits, you know? Rosemary said

So I've heard. Lee said

(Laughs) well, great! Why don't you get me your spending records for last month and I'll dive right in? Rosemary said

What, you're serious? Uh... all right. There you go. Lee said

Meanwhile at the campout

You sure about this? You haven't had much experience in the wild. Jack said

(Sigh) jack, we're a stone's throw from town. I think I'll survive. Elizabeth said

Are you, uh, gonna start the campfire by rubbing two sticks together again? Jack said

This time, I'm prepared. Elizabeth said

Ah. Jack said

We'll be singing songs together later you're welcome to join us. Elizabeth said

No, we're gonna be... we're gonna be telling some ghost stories, but you are welcome to join us. Jack said

Ghost stories ? Elizabeth said

Yeah. Jack said

Jack, are you sure about that? Some of boys are pretty young. They might get scared. Elizabeth said

Nah, boys love scary stories. Jack said

All right. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile in town at church

You're leaving? Where will you go? Abigail said

San Francisco, for starters. Frank said

And what's in San Francisco? Abigail said

A boat to someplace where no one's ever heard of Matt Landry or pastor frank hogan. Frank said

But you won't be a pastor anymore. Abigail said

Maybe I was never meant to be a pastor. Frank said

Wrong. You were meant to be our pastor. Abigail said

Well, not anymore. There's not a soul in this town that wants me to stay. Frank said

I do and you're still our pastor. I told you, you could rely on me. Abigail said

Well, you told me you needed some time to thank. Frank said

I took the time. And here I am. Maybe everybody else just needs some time, too. Abigail said

They won't even look me in the eye. If was a cook or a blacksmith, wouldn't matter what people thought but a preacher? If no one wants to here from him then he's no good to anyone. Frank said

They've listened before. All the time that you preached mercy and forgiveness, they heard you. Maybe you just need to convince them that everybody deserves a second chance. Fight them. I'll stand with you. Abigail said

Got any other suggestions? Frank said

You might pray for guidance. I'm told it helps. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the campout (owls hooting)

Okay boys. You go to sleep jack said

But what if a ghost comes Robert said

Well, there are no ghosts. Tell you what, how about I tell you a new story? About a little... a dog! Jack said

I'm afraid of dogs, too. Robert said

(On thé girls side)

Thanks for taking us camping it's fun. A girl said

I'm glad you're enjoying it. Elizabeth said

Can we do this again? A girl said

Of course we can. Elizabeth said

Robert said girls don't belong on camping trips. I told him he was silly and undemocratic. Deborah said

Good for you! Elizabeth said

Because girls can do anything. Right, miss thatcher? Deborah said

That's right, Deborah. Girls can do anything that boys can do. Now go to sleep. Elizabeth said

(Sniffling)

Oh! Opal? Are you all right? Elizabeth said

I want to go home. Little Opal. Said

Are you feeling okay? Not sick? Just homesick? Mmm. I bet you miss your nice comfortable bed and your warm quilt, huh? Do you have any stuffed animals at home? Elizabeth said

Brownie. He's a bear. Little opal said

What kind of bear? Elizabeth said

A brown bear. Opal said

Oh. (Chuckles) well, do you know what Brownie's doing right now? He's sleeping. And he's dreaming about you. Elizabeth said

Is he sad ? opal said

No! Because he knows you're coming home very soon to tell him all about your great adventure. How you saw a family of quails and sang songs. So close your eyes. And listen to the crickets. And think about brownie. And it'll be morning before you know it. Would you like me to sign to you? Elizabeth said

No. You sung enough. I like the crickets better. Opal said

Oh. Tough audience. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile in town (footsteps approaching the jailhouse )

Evening. Bill said

Are you the, uh, constable? I was told that I would find the constable her. Jay said

He's not here right now. Can I help you? Bill said

Yes. My room has been burglarized, my briefcase stolen. Jay said

Can you describe it? Bill said

Dark brown leather, hand-tooled, silver studs. Jay said

Something like this? Bill said

(Laughs) That's it! How did you ... who are you? Are you a Mountie? Jay said

Not at the moment. I'm just a friend of Dottie Ramsey. Bill said

You're the one who broke in. You stole it. Jay said

Nothing's been stolen. Everything's here. Bill said

You can't get away with this you broke the law, sir. I'll have you arrested. Jay said

On what evidence? You have your property here, so it's your word against mine. Sit down. Interesting reading there. Curious how the beneficiaries sign so-called "release forms," transferring their benefits to you. That's a nasty little racket. Lying to grieving widows, scaring them into talking tiny cash payouts, and then stealing the benefits for yourself. Bill said

You can't prove this. Like you said, your word against mine. Jay said

I'm not the law, mister, so I can't send you to prison where you belong, but there are worse place I can send you. Bill said

What do you want ? Jay said

I want you to write a check out to Dottie Ramsey for the full amount of her benefits right now. Bill said

(Stammering) I can do that. Jay said

Then I want you to go to all the other people that you stole from and return all the money you took. And I'll know if you don't. (As he shows what seems to be a Ledger book to him) bill said

I will I will. Jay said

Pleasure doing business with you. Bill said

Meanwhile at the campout

(Jack sighs) as he quietly comes up to the fire that is still burning outside the side

Did you have any trouble putting the boys to bed? Elizabeth said

Nope. Jack said

So why are they all in your tent? Elizabeth said

Well, like you said, some of them are pretty young. Jack said

Mmm mmm-hmm. Elizabeth said

Okay, maybe... maybe we should've... We should've sung songs with you. Jack said

(Laughs) what? Elizabeth said

You look comfortable here. Jack said

I am Elizabeth said

It's far from civilization no motor cars, mansions, no French boutiques? Jack said

no crowds, No noise Elizabeth said

Yeah, just bad weather, bugs and wild animals. Jack said

(Sighs) bright stars, fresh-caught trout, babbling brooks Elizabeth said

Well, it sounds like you could live out here. Jack said

You know, I think I could. Elizabeth said

Well, I don't, I don't mean in a tent. I'm talking about a house, with a nice stove, bathtub, an icebox. Jack said (Both chuckling)

A nice, warm, comfortable feather bed. Elizabeth said

Waking up next to the one you love every morning. Jack said

It sounds heavenly. (as jack kiss her) I think I'd like to write about life here. If I'm lucky, I'll get published one day. It's just a dream of mine. Elizabeth said

Well, dreams have been known to come true. Jack said

Meanwhile in town at the saloon

(Indistinct chatter)

Abigail! Care to join us? Trudy has to leave after this hand Florence said

Before she leaves, I'd like to talk to you about pastor hogan. We own him a lot,and he... what's the matter? Abigail said

Frank hogan is no longer our pastor. You do know that? Florence said

No, I don't. What do you mean? Abigail said

Mayor Gowen called an emergency meeting of the pastoral committee. We voted unanimously to remove him and start looking for a replacement. Florence said

You fired frank in a secret meeting? Abigail said

A private meeting. Martin said

Why didn't we all have a say? Abigail said

To what end? He posed a threat to the community. We know what we have to do. It's done. Martin said

Undo it. Abigail said

It's too late. I've already informed mr. Landry of his termination. Martin said

A few minutes later at the church

Frank? Abigail said

(Abigail finds a note that read)

"To everything there's a season, a time to keep and a time to cast away. Goodbye, Abigail. I'll miss you." "Frank said in the latter."

The next morning at cafe

They fired Frank. The vote was unanimous. Abigail said

(Sighs) wow. Jack said

I would've thought at least one or two would've stood up for him. Elizabeth said

Gowen hand-picked that committee. Abigail said

And they did just what he wanted. Jack said

And frank didn't argue. Gowen convinced him we'd be safe without him. Abigail said

We can decide these things for ourselves. Elizabeth said

It's too late now. Abigail said

Maybe not. Elizabeth said

Where are you going? Jack said

I'm a teacher time for a lesson. Elizabeth said

Excuse me, Mayor Gowen. I want to know why you fired pastor hogan. Elizabeth said

I didn't fire anybody. The committee made the decision. Martin said

Well, the committee hardly represents the people of valley spring , and should a decision like that really behind closed doors without the involvement of the community? Elizabeth said

I'm sure that the community will support the action. Martin said

I'm not at all sure. Elizabeth said

Respectfully, miss thatcher, I don't think there's any point in rehashing this. When I informed mr. Landry of the decision, he left town without protest. I think even he realized that he doesn't belong here in valley spring . Martin said

Oh, we have no idea what Frank Hogan realized, because you never gave him the chance to speak to us. Elizabeth said

Miss Thatcher... Martin said

You may have gotten your way for now, but is this really how you want to be remembered? As the Mayor who decided everything in secret? The is a democracy, Mayor Gowen. We deserve better. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at Lee office

Good morning lee said

Good morning Rosemary said

Ooh! It's freezing here. Is there something wrong with the stove? Lee said

Uh, no. We're just conserving firewood. Rosemary said

Conserving firewood? I run a sawmill we're up to our ears in scrap wood. Lee said

Yes, and we should be selling it, not burning it. Besides, it's a balmy day. Just dress warm. You won't even feel it. Rosemary said

I won't feel it because I'll be dead from exposure. Um... are there any pencils? Lee said

Oh. (Laughs) sorry. I was using the pencil. Here. Rosemary said

"The pencil"? Lee said

Well, you only write with one hand. Rosemary said

(Sighs) I'm afraid to ask, but is there any paper? Lee said

Yes, of course there's paper, silly. You can't run an office without paper. (Chuckles) just write small, oh and use both sides to sheets per day. (Door opens and closes) Rosemary said

Meanwhile at the saloon

(Gasps) how did you get it? Dottie said

I merely helped the gentleman see reason. Bill said

Did you need to use force? Dottie said

Simple persuasion. Bill said

Oh. Too bad. (Chuckles) bill, I would have paid for this. Dottie said

Oh, no, no, no. I won't accept that. Bill said

Why not? It took time and effort you need to be compensated for that. Dottie said

Well, that's very kind of you, but helping a neighbor and taking the smirk off a crook's face, it's more than enough reward for me. Bill said

Penny for a pencil? That's ridiculous. It's highway robbery. Rosemary said

A penny for a pencil seems pretty reasonable, Rosemary. Elizabeth said

Well, not if you need ten. That's ten pennies. A while dime! Rosemary said

And? Elizabeth said

And not everybody has a dime. Rosemary said (Throws pencils in a basket)

Rosemary, is everything all right? Elizabeth said

Everything is just fine. Rosemary said

Rosemary. Elizabeth said

(Sighs) all right. No no, it is not fine. It is not fine at all. Rosemary said

Do you want to tell me what this is all about? Elizabeth said

It's Lee. He doesn't want me to know, but ...(sighs) I'm afraid his business is in terrible trouble. Rosemary said

The sawmill? Elizabeth said

You must promise me not to say a word, not to anybody. Rosemary said

My lips are sealed. Elizabeth said

I'm helping lee economize, trim the fat, tighten our belts... but when I total it all up, it's not nearly enough to make a difference..(gasps) there's thought. I could divide up his office, rent half of it out. I just have to put in a second door. Rosemary said

Rosemary, I don't have an advice column, but I thought it's time you had a talk with lee tell him how worried you are. Elizabeth said

Oh no no. I couldn't do that. Rosemary said

Why not? Elizabeth said

Because I just can't! Rosemary said

Yes, You can! Didn't you write a column about the importance of communication between two people? Elizabeth said

Well, sounds vaguely familiar. Rosemary said

So just go do it. Elizabeth said

But— Rosemary said

No buts. Just go. Now! Elizabeth said

The night in some unknown parts of the Weiland land

To everything there is a season. Time to keep silence and a time to speak. Abigail said

A time to search, and a time to give up as lost. Frank said

Obviously, you're not lost, because I found you. Abigail said

You planning on keeping me company on my ride to San Francisco? Frank said

No. I plan on taking you back to valley spring , because the people there deserve to be told the whole story. Abigail said

They don't want to hear it. I'm a danger to them. An outlaw. Frank said

You were an outlaw. Abigail said

Abigail, I am trying to protect them. Trying to protect you. Frank said

Maybe we don't need protecting. Abigail said

If anything happens –— Frank said

We face it together as a community because that's who we are in valley spring . The town needs to hear from you, frank, even if it's just goodbye. You owe us that much at least. Abigail said

The next morning was Sunday morning

I owe you all an apology. You welcome me in, you took me into your hearts. I should've trusted you with the truth. Instead, I dragged out the lie. They say the measure of a man isn't by his mistakes, but by what he learns from them. Matt Landry is dead. He made plenty of mistakes. He did some terrible things there's no denying it, but without Matt Landry, there would be no Frank Hogan. His anger taught me kindness. His greed taught me generosity. His indifference taught me compassion. Now, I don't expect you to forgive me. But I do hope you'll remember me the way you knew me as the man you called your pastor. And your friend. Thanks, everybody for coming. I really appreciate it. Frank said

You're not leaving. Not without a re-vote. This is a democracy you heard what the man had to say. All of you voting to re-hire Frank Hogan as our pastor, please rise. Abigail said

(Indistinct conversations)

You did the right thing, Mayor. Elizabeth said

Well, I'm glad you you think so. (Softly) remember, you didn't dodge a bullet in there. I shoved you out of the way. Martin said

Now that you're a woman of means what are your plans? Bill said

This may sound silly, but I've always dreamed of opening up a dress shop. Dottie said

That doesn't sound silly at all. I'm sure it would be a success. Bill said

And what about you? Have you made up your mind about the pinkest's agency ? Dottie said

Not yet. It's a nice offer, but ––Bill said

But you're an unconventional man who might not be happy in a conventional job. Here's a thought. Have you ever considered going into business for yourself? Dottie said

Well, I am part owner of Abigail's cafe May I remind you? Bill said

I mean a business of your own. Dottie said

Bill, I found your friend's widow Mary Benjamin she owns a homestead just outside of lost hills jack said

Appreciate that, jack. Bill said

No more secrets. Abigail said

To New beginnings frank said

I'm glad you didn't die when you got shot, pastor Corey said

Amen to that, son. Frank said

(Up a tree on the Ridge top overlooking the valley)

There's Matt he doesn't look like he's going anywhere. Santino said

Meanwhile at lee office

What are you doing here at this hour? Still looking for expenses for me to cut? Lee said

Lee, you don't have to put a brave face on anymore. I know about your financial problems. Rosemary said

Financial problems? What financial problems? I'm doing fine. Lee said

Oh, come on. You can be honest with me. Rosemary said

I am being completely honest. Lee said

What about the overdue accident at the mercantile? Rosemary said

It's been taken care of. Lee said

It has? Rosemary said

Yeah! The bill was just under all the paperwork on my desk just like I told you it was. Lee said

But I know about the loan! Rosemary said

The loan? Oh! Well, yeah, I'm applying for a loan to expand my business, but I do that all the time. (Gasps) wait a minutes is that is what all cost-cutting is about? You ... you think I'm going broke? Lee said

Aren't you? Rosemary said

No! Not in the least. Lee said

Well, that's what it looked like. (chuckles lee) so I was just trying to help Rosemary said

(Exhales) Rosemary, thank you for trying to save me money. That my be the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me, but completely unnecessary. Lee said

(Sighs) oh. No, you know what is completely unnecessary? A big expense that you don't need when you are trying to expand. Rosemary said

No no, no no, no I said I was gonna build you a theater, and I am going to build you that theater. Lee said

But Valley Springdoesn't need a theater right now. It needs a bigger sawmill. More jobs, more industry a better future. Rosemary said

You sure about that? Lee said

(Chuckles) I've never been more sure of anything. So I release you from your promise. Rosemary said

Rosemary level there is gonna come a day when I am going to build you the biggest and best theater this side of the Rocky Mountains. Lee said

I know you will. And I'm really sorry I've been such a busybody. Rosemary said

Oh–– Lee said

Yes. With the thrift plan and redecorating. Just my clumsy way of attempting to be a part of your life. Rosemary said

But you are. You are a part of my life. You're the best part of my life. Lee said (as he kiss Rosemary)

Meanwhile at Elizabeth house (as thunder rumble in the distance of the Rocky Mountains with a fall moon 🌚)

Chicken's in the oven. Elizabeth said

And the wine is poured. The place looks great. So do you. Jack said

Why, constable, you make me blush. Elizabeth said

I want to make a toast to your decorating skills. Jack said

It still isn't the ritz. Elizabeth said

No, but they say "home is where the heart is." Jack said

Then my home is right said(Glasses clink)
