Two months later.
Elizabeth's Journal it's been three years since I left the comforts of big city life to teach school in the little town of valley spring . Every winter I spend here, I am become more convinced that there is nothing more beautiful. Then Christmas in my Western frontier home. It was a difficult year for many of our new neighbors. The people who settled near the river so are their homes swept away in a flood. Some Even last beloved husbands and father's. But in the true spirit of giving, our town has joined together, promising to those less fortunate A holiday filled with comfort and joy. Elizabeth said
(Knock on the door)
Good morning Old roomy. I am going into town do you need anything or do you want to come along. Melissa said
Let me get my coats and give me a minute Please Melissa. Elizabeth said
A few minutes later at the Mercantile
This is a long list. Ned said
I am in charge of the Christmas committee this year. Elizabeth said
It's, uh, it's a bigger order than usual. Ned said
Well, there's extra for the families from the settlement. It's the least we can do to show them how much we care. Elizabeth said
I agree a hundred percent. Ned said
So do you think you can get it all here before Christmas Eve? Elizabeth said
It shouldn't be a problem. Ned said
Great! I come by later with the grocery order. Elizabeth said
I wonder what Miss levels will say when she hears you've taken over her committee. Ned said
"Mrs. County" I has been away on her honeymoon with Mr. County. Elizabeth said
I heard they are due back today. Ned said
And I am sure Rosemary will be delighted that someone volunteered in our absence. Elizabeth said
You don't actually believe that, do you? Ned said
Christmas is the season for miracles. Elizabeth said
Miss thatcher! Where would you will like this tree? Bill said
Um... how about rain here in the center of town? Elizabeth said
Sounds like the perfect place to me. Bill said
Jack! Elizabeth said
Elizabeth. Jack said
How is the work coming? Elizabeth said
Good! We finish the attic in Mrs. Sullivan's and award just starting work over in the dentist's office. Jack said
And what about The old houses by the north road? Elizabeth said
The seven houses are going to take some time. To tell the truth, I need to find a few more men to lend a hand. Jack said
Oh, there's Liberty, the family. I was thinking the apartment below Dottie's would be perfect for them. Elizabeth said
Elizabeth... I promised you that I'd find everyone from the settlement a permanent place to call home by Christmas, and I intend to deliver. Jack said
Christmas is only a week away. Elizabeth said
Would you please stop worrying? Jack said
(Sighs heavily) I wish I knew how. Elizabeth said
Well, I don't know how we're going to pull off a Christmas Eve banquet. And this building project, if you ask me, it's far too ambitious. Florence said
I think it's fantastic. Abigail said
Any word on when Mayor Gowen is coming back? Molly said
Faith was going to check on him while she was in Lost Hills, but I haven't heard anything. Abigail said
Well, I really think it's time for you to officially step in as mayor, Abigail. You are head of the town council, and the town bylaws clearly state that when the mayor is absent, the head of the council assumes the leadership role. Florence said
Florence, I'm not doing anything official until we know for sure about Martin. And quite frankly, with the cafe, the banquet, and Christmas for Corey, I've got my hands full, thank you very much. Abigail said
I just hope miss thatcher knows what she's doing. She may have bitten off more than she can chew. Florence said
She will be fine, if we all pitch in and help. Abigail said
I suppose I could bake a cake or two. Molly said
Or twenty-five Florence said
Oh, come on Florence! It's be fun! Abigail said
Abigail, Elizabeth said
Excuse me, ladies. Abigail said
Of course, molly said
Do you have the menu for the banquet? Elizabeth said
Give me till 3:00 o'clock Abigail said
The sooner the better. I'm wondering if we should serve turkey or ham. Maybe both. Elizabeth said
You know, you're starting to sound a lot like Rose–– Abigail said
Bite your tongue! Elizabeth said
(Stagecoach rumbling in to town)
Yoo-hoo! Merry Christmas! Rosemary said
Ah. Speak of the devil. Abigail said
(Elizabeth chuckles)
Okay...lee said
Well, if it isn't the happy honeymooners! Abigail said
Hello! Lee said as he hugs Abigail
Hello! (as she hugs Elizabeth) We had just a marvelous time on our honeymoon! Rosemary said
Hi jack. Lee said
I didn't want to come back. But then I realized i had to make an extra special Christmas for my honey-bunny Rosemary said
Yeah. That would be me. Lee said
Just think. this is our very first Christmas as a married couple. (Gasps) And I hate to disappoint you all, but I absolutely do not have time to head the Christmas committee this year, so someone else will have to remove that terrible, scrawny Christmas tee that Mr. avenue is putting up in front of the saloon. Rosemary said
Actually, I'm in charge of the committee this year, and I think that tree is just fine. Elizabeth said
You would, dear. Rosemary said
Constable Thorsten? Can I play with rip? Corey said
Of Course you can, Corey. He's in the jail. Jack said
Oh, Corey. Hold on. That reminds me... um, picked up a little something for you when we were in New York. Autographed by doc Crandall himself. Lee said
He's the best picture in the league Of he's time. Corey said
You bet he was. Lee said
What do you say, young man? Abigail said
Thanks, mr. County! Corey said
You're very welcome. Lee said
So, need a hand moving the luggage back to your place? Jack said
Oh don't be silly, no. Lee's please is much too small for both of us Rosemary said
Yeah, apparently, I am now building Rosemary the largest house in town. Lee said
But where will you stay in the meantime? Abigail said
Right next door... to me. Elizabeth said
We're neighbors Come take a peek inside. Come take a peek inside. Rosemary said
All right, give me a head with this. Lee said
Okay. Jack said
Ready? Lee said
Yep. Jack said
Okay. Oh! Whoa whoa, Careful. It's heavy. Lee said
What has Rosemary got in here? Lead? Jack said
Souvenirs. Lee said
Like the Statue of Liberty? I can't believe you hauled this thing across an entire continent. Jack said
Rosemary went Christmas shopping every single day we were away. Lee said
Well, lucky you didn't stay another week. Jack said
You're telling me. There's no place like home. Lee said
It's good to have you back, Lee. Jack said
Good to be back. So tell me, uh ... you and Elizabeth have big plans for the holidays? Lee said
Yep. But she doesn't know it yet. Jack said
Okay. Here we come! Lee said
Ready? (Grunts)
Meanwhile at the settlement
Can I get your attention? Listen up, everyone! We're lucky we haven't had much snow up on the high ground here yet, but people in town know it's getting cold, so they're invited you to stay with them until we finish building you homes. Frank said
We can't impose like that. Whitley said
Oh, sure, you can. Frank said
Nurse Cora is here to help make all the arrangements. Frank said
There isn't a lot more to say, except let's get you packed up and out of here as fast as we can! Faith said
I can't believe we're going to have a place of our own by Christmas. Whitley said
Well, you can believe it, because it's true. Faith said
I wish I could help with the work, but I'm heading out for a double shift at the mine. Mr. Liberty said
It's okay. Mr. Liberty. We're got plenty of volunteers. People are happy to donate supplies. Frank said
Maggie And Timmy are so excited, I can't get them to sleep at night. Whitley said
Same with our ruby! A woman said
(Laughing)
Nancy, let me help you with that. Frank said
I'll be fine. Nancy said
You sure? Looks pretty heavy. Frank said
I said I'll be fine. Nancy said
(Settler) Frank, we need a hard over here. A man said
Meanwhile at school
Corey, please put away the ball. We have lots of things to do today. Elizabeth said
Like what? Girl said
Well, first, we are going to be making Christmas decorations for the classroom. Elizabeth said
My mom said we're going to be having a nativity pageant on Christmas Eve. Holly said
That's right, we are. Elizabeth said
What's a Navi-tivity pageant? Opal said
"Nativity." It's a play about the birth of Jesus. Elizabeth said
Are there going to be parts for everyone? Timmy said
Of course there are! And... I have ordered very special costumes all the way from Hamilton and they're going to be my Christmas gift for the class. Elizabeth
Um... miss thatcher, will we have to audition, like we did for miss Rosemary's plays? Robert said
I'm gonna audition for May. Robbery said
There won't be any auditions. The biggest parts are going to go to the students who show the most Christmas spirit by being kind and caring. Elizabeth said
I want to be one of the wise man. Corey said
Then I'm sure you will be very kind and very caring. Elizabeth said
I could clean the chalkboard after school. Corey said
That's a good start, but it's not exactly what I had in mind. Elizabeth said
Well then, what did you have in mind? Robert said
You will have to figure it out. And after the play, there's going to be a giving tree, with presents and special surprises. Yes, ruby? Elizabeth said
Even for the new kids? Ruby said
Especially for the new kids. Elizabeth said
I really want a train set. Timmy said
I've never had a dollhouse. Ruby said
What about you, Maggie? Is there something special you'd like? Elizabeth said
I once had a "cabbage patch " doll, but I lost her. I miss her a lot. Maggie said
Oh, well, maybe you could drew a picture of her to put on the tree. Elizabeth said
I'm not very good at drawing. Maggie said
I'll help. Emily said
That's very kind of you, Emily. All right, everyone. Let's get to work on these decorations. Harper? I didn't get to hear what you wanted for Christmas Elizabeth said
Guess I just want my mom to be happy again. She really misses my dad. Harper said
Well, she has you, and that's the most important thing in the world. Come on. Elizabeth said
Meanwhile at the settlement
Can I help you pack? Frank said
I can handle it myself, thanks. Nancy said
You want to tell me what's wrong? Frank said
Everyone's so happy out there. It's hard being alone at Christmas. Nancy said
You bet it is. Frank said
You've all been so generous. It's wrong for me to feel sorry for myself. Nancy said
It's not wrong. You lost your husband. Why don't you come by the church tomorrow? We can talk. Frank said
I don't want to put you to any trouble. Nancy said
I'd tell you if it was trouble. So tomorrow? Frank said
All right. Nancy said
Meanwhile in town
How's it coming? Bill said
Well, it turns out the floorboards are rotted. We're going to need some more lumber. Jack said
Have you started on the apartment for the Liberty yet? Bill said
No I figured I'd get to that tomorrow. Jack said
I'll head to the mill, see if I can get more lumber. John said
Thanks, John. Bill, I need a favor. Jack said
What kind of favor? Bill said
Think you could cover for me for about an hour? Jack said
Police business? Bill said
Actually, I promised someone we would pick out a Christmas tree together. Jack said
Go ahead. Consider it an early Christmas present. Actually considering your own Christmas present. Bill said (as Elizabeth walked down main street not paying attention to them working on one of the buildings)
When I was on my rounds yesterday I spotted the perfect Christmas tree. Jack said
I thought we were going to pick one out together. Elizabeth said
We are. I just thought I would do you a little advance scouting to save some time, that's all. So? What do you think? Jack said
Uh, um... it's compact. Elizabeth said
Well it's the perfect fit for your row house. Jack said
Or it's exactly what you need for the jail. Elizabeth said
(Sighs) you don't like it. Jack said
(Bells jingling)
Did you hear that? Elizabeth said
Yeah, it sounds like sleigh bells. Jack said (Rustling)
Over there. Here, boy! Come on Elizabeth said
(A Dog woofing)
Where'd he go? Jack said
I don't know... but it looks like he just found us the most perfect tree. Elizabeth said
(Laughs jack)
It's a beauty, all right. Same Bailey, at your service. Same said
Constable Jack Thorsten. This is Elizabeth Letcher. Jack said
Hello, Elizabeth said
Is that your wagon? Jack said
Yeah. It's my wagon and my livelihood. I Pride myself on having just what my customers need. Same said
Hmm. How long do you think you'll be staying Mr. Bailey? Jack said
Don't worry about me Constable. I am just passing through on my way to Lost Hills. Need a hand shopping down that tree? Same said
I think I can handle it, thanks. Jack said
All right. I'll leave you to it. Same said
That night at the County's home
Oh. Hey, honey, I'm home. Or... maybe I'm in Santa's workshop. Lee said
What do you think? Rosemary said
(Chuckles) wow. I mean, it's, uh... hi. Lee said
I thought I might as well get started on the holiday decorating. Rosemary said
"Started?" You mean you're not finished? Lee said
Well, I don't know. The trees look a little bare. Rosemary said
You do realize, of course , that most people have one tree. Lee said
We're not most people. Rosemary said
But two trees? Really? Lee said
Not two, silly. There's anything one upstairs. Rosemary said
Ah. Of course there is. But now there's hardly enough room for all the furniture. Lee said
There is a place for everything and everything's in its place. Rosemary said
Mm-hmm. You know, you really don't need to go to all this trouble. Lee said
It's no trouble at all. And thankfully, I have the time, now that Elizabeth is running the Christmas committee. I never really what a burden it was. Rosemary said
I thought you enjoyed being in charge of that stuff. Lee said
That was before I was a married woman. Now I can see it's the perfect job for a spinster who doesn't have a husband to take care of. (Gasps) i almost forgot. I need to rearrange your closet. Rosemary said
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, that's okay. You don't need to do that. Lee said
I want to. Rosemary said
(Sighs) your Christmas present is in the closet, and –– no, no, no, no, no, no. I want it to be a surprise. Lee said
What is it? Rosemary said
Well if I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise. Right? Uh-uh, stay with me. You're gonna love it though. Lee said
Meanwhile at the cafe
You must be exhausted. Packing up that camp couldn't have been easy. Abigail said
Oh. At least we got everyone settled before sundown. Frank said
Would you like some dessert? Abigail said
Oh, you know I love your desserts, but I gotta turn in early. Frank said
Oh. Abigail said
More construction first thing. It's gonna be another long day. Frank said
Are you gonna have enough strength to help us decorate that Christmas tree tomorrow night? Abigail said
Oh, you bet. Frank said (As he kisses her on the cheek)
Meanwhile at Elizabeth house
I hope you don't mind that I brought some ornaments of my own. Jack said
No, I love them. Especially this one. Elizabeth said
Oh, that. That one was my favorite when I was a kid. Jack said
Looks like Rip used it as a chew toy. Elizabeth said
I'll fix it. Office are handy at lots of things. Jack said
Well... how are officers at playing Santa? Elizabeth said
Why do you ask? Jack said
(Sighs) I need someone to help out presents after the pageant. Elizabeth said
The thing is, I-I wouldn't want to rob someone more deserving of the honor. Jack said
Please? I really want to make this––Elizabeth said
...the best Christmas for the Town and for the new family, I know. All I want is to make it the best Christmas for you. Jack said
You have something in mind? Elizabeth said
As a matter of fact there's something I've been meaning to ask you. And if I'm gonna to do it I have to do it now. Jack said
Now as in right now? Elizabeth said
Well, it really can't wait. Would you do me the honor... the great honor of accompanying me to the Mounties and office Christmas ball? Jack said
Our next selection is one of my favorites is "All I Need" Melissa said on the radio
The Mounties and office Christmas ball? Elizabeth said
We won't belong. Just an afternoon and an evening. It's in Bakersfield this year. I'll hire a horse and a carriage to take us. Jack said
Oh, but, um, I have the dinner and the pageant and ... Elizabeth said
I promise I'll get you back in time for everything. Jack said
Oh, jack of course. I'd love to go. Elizabeth said
The next morning at the cafe
Have you seen my baseball? Corey said
It was under the couch the last time I looked. Oh, but don't play with it in class? Abigail said
Are those cookies? Corey said
Yes, but they are for Christmas Eve not for breakfast.
Miss Abigail... if I bring cookies to school, does that count as being kind and caring? Corey said
Well, it does if you do it. Because you Think it will make your friends happy. Abigail said
So it doesn't if I wanna to get a good part in the Christmas play? Corey said
I'm afraid not. Abigail said
What if it's both? Corey said
Well it's a start. (chuckles) have a good day Corey. Abigail said
The morning stage just came in. Clara said
Is there a problem? Abigail said
He's back. Clara said
Out Side
Careful! don't want you to fall. Faith said
I'm not going to fall unless somebody pushes me. Martin said
Let's get you home. You. You should save your strength. Faith said
And you should save your breath. I'm just fine. Martin said
Well, this is a surprise. Bill said
(Sighs) Mayor Gowen refused to stay in the hospital another day. Faith said
Is he going to be okay? Abigail said
He'll be fine. Right now, he just needs plenty of rest. Faith said
But he can go back to work right? Abigail said
Abigail... Martin Gowen's under federal investigation. He is not allowed to serve as mayor unless or until he's cleared. bill said
Meanwhile at school
Opal, that is a beautiful house. Elizabeth said
It's for brownie. Opal said
I'm making mine for cabbage patch, but I can't get the roof to stay on. Maggie said
Well, I think you might need some more icing to glue it on. Elizabeth said
She can use mine. Corey said
Thanks, Corey! Maggie said
Miss thatcher? How come Harper isn't here? Robbery said
I don't know. Elizabeth said
Timmy, did Harper walk with you to school this morning? Elizabeth said
His mom said not to wait for him. Timmy said
(Grandly): hello, my dear children! Well, look at all of the wonderful things you're making for Christmas! Rosemary said
Miss thatcher says there's going to be a nativity play, presents, and a Christmas feast. Holly said
Well, miss thatcher's going to be very busy with all of that, and the Mounties and office Christmas ball. Rosemary said
(Children oohing)
You're going to a ball? Robbery said
With constable Thorsten? Emily said
How romantic. Holly said
(Girls giggle)
Oh, all right, everyone. Let's keep working on our projects. (And her pulls Rosemary to the front door) how did you know I was going to the Mounties and office Christmas ball? Elizabeth said
Oh, my dear Elizabeth. The walls at the row-houses are paper-thin, and your squeaky voice cuts through them like a knife. But never mind all that. I am here on a mission of mercy. Rosemary said
Which is? Elizabeth said
The Mounties and office Christmas ball is not just any social event. It is the event of the season, and lucky for you I have an absolutely stunning gown. I bought it on my honeymoon and I want you to borrow it. Rosemary said
Thank you, but I'm sure I can find something in my closet. Elizabeth said
From two seasons ago? Rosemary said
Oh... I guess it has been a while since I've gone shopping for a gown. Elizabeth said
Let me be your fairy godmother. Rosemary said
As long as you don't turn me into a pumpkin. Elizabeth said
You'll make a beautiful Cinderella. Now I really must run. I have some digging to do. Rosemary said
Digging? Elizabeth said
Well, lee bought me a Christmas present while we were on our honeymoon. I haven't been able to find it anywhere! The only time I can look for it is when he's at work. Rosemary said
Wouldn't that spoil the surprise? Elizabeth said
Of, my dear, half the fun of a surprise is knowing what it is ahead of time. Rosemary said
Meanwhile in town
Here you go. Kate said
What's all this for? Frank said
We're leaving town. Nancy said
Leaving? That's –– that's kind of sudden. Frank said
Well that is the way of things I guess. Nancy said
You never told me. Frank said
What's there to tell? There's nothing here for us not anymore. Not without Harper's father. Nancy said
Just think about it for a few days. Stay. At least until after Christmas. Frank said
How can we celebrate Christmas with out Virgil? Put those things in the wagon Harper. He shouldn't have died. He was a good man. Nancy said
I know he was. Frank said
You don't know anything. I don't need you, I don't need your church. I don't need any of this! Nancy said
Yes, you do. And we need you. Just let me help. Frank said
You want to help? Then tell God to give me back my husband. We have to go. Nancy said
Nancy... Nancy, think about what you're doing here. Frank said
Just leave us alone. Nancy said
Meanwhile in The apartment above the mayors office.
Hello, Martin. It's good to see you. Abigail said
Abigail. What can I do for you? Martin said
I heard about the accident, and I came to see how you were doing. I brought you some muffins. Abigail said
Well, that's very kind of you. Thank you. Martin said
How's Rorà? Is she coming back to take care of you? Abigail said
You needn't concern yourself with that. I'm quite fine. Thank you. Martin said
Well, then I need to talk to you about some town business. There are bills that have to be paid. Abigail said
Well, if you just leave them, bank in my office tomorrow. Martin said
Martin... you can't go back to mean mayor. Not yet, anyway. Abigail said
Well, says who? Martin said
The town charter. You're still under federal investigation, and, apparently, that means you can't serve Valley Springin any capacity until you've been cleared. I'm sorry. Abigail said
Are you? Seems to me that you gotten what you always wanted. Martin said
I have a business to run and a Child to raise. I certainly do not want your job. Abigail said
And yet, you have it. Martin said
If you could just answer a few questions about this invoices... Abigail said
Well you are an intelligent woman. I'm sure you well I figure it out. Martin said
I don't have your experience, Martin. Abigail said
No you do not. Martin said
I think we could work together. Abigail said
Well you thought wrong. Martin said
You're making this harder than it needs to be. Abigail said
Good afternoon Mrs. Stanton. Martin said
Why should you get to play Mary? Anna said
I helped Opal with her spelling test Holly said
I shared my lunch with Ruby. Anna said
Is something wrong girls? Elizabeth said
No. Anna And Holly said
Good! Because we can't be in the Christmas spirit if we're fighting with our best friends now can we? Elizabeth said
No. Anna And Holly said
When I was a kid we didn't Christmas pageant I want him to be in Joseph but the-the teacher, she chose someone else to play the Part. Jack said
Mm. So what part did you get? Elizabeth said
" Shepherd Number Three." Never could figure out how to be the teacher's pet. Jack said
Until now. Elizabeth said
Is there a problem, Frank? Jack said
(Sighs) Nancy Theo and her boy left town this morning for a good. Frank said
Oh, no! what happened? Elizabeth said
Too many memories. Frank said
(Sighs) Harper said something yesterday I should've have spoken with her. Elizabeth said
I tried to stop her, but... I couldn't I hate to think of her and her son all alone on the road at Christmas. Anyway I'm going to help Lee with the house by the North Road. Frank said
I feel Terrible. Harper is such a sweet boy. He was doing so well here. What can we do? Elizabeth said
We can pray for a miracle. Jack said
Look everyone! Anna said
(Bells jingling) whoa! Merry Christmas Poison girls! Sam said
Do you think it Santa? Opal said
Come on! Dasher (Taps wagon) looks like he's taking a shine to you! Sam said
I wish I could have a dog. What's his name. Corey said
" dasher" Sam said
Like the reindeer! Robbery said
I knew it was Santa! Opal said
Did you get my letter about Cabbage patch doll? Maggie said
(Chuckles) I'm just an old peddling, sweetheart. I'm not Santa Claus. But I'm sure he got your letter. And you know what? I think he knows you been a good girl this year, too. Sam said
All right, everyone. It's time to go home. your parents are waiting for you. Elizabeth said
Mr. Bailey I thought you were heading to Lost Hills. Jack said
I was, but then, well, I figured maybe I should stick around a little while longer. This place sure has grown up since last time I was here. Sam said
When was that? Jack said
So long ago, I never forgotten, but what I remember is people around here pretty friendly. Sam said
Well, they still are, as long as you abide by the rules. Jack said
Aw, I can save you the trouble, son. No selling moonshine. No is selling any home remedies might happen to be moonshine. No disturbing the peace, and no disturbing anyone, at all! Well, unless, of course, they want to be disturbed. Sam said
(Chuckles) I think you understand things pretty well. Jack said
Some say. That a boy. Sam said
You're staying in till Christmas? Jack said
Guess that depends on what people around here need. It's like I said before I'm good at helping folks find what they're looking for. Sam said
Like the perfect Christmas tree? Jack said
(Chuckles) something like that. Sam said
Meanwhile at the cafe
I don't think I've been this busy in my entire life. Abigail said
Well, if you're concerned about becoming Mayor, Abigail, I don't blame you, it's a tall order. Bill said
So you don't think I can handle it? Abigail said
I didn't say that. Bill said
Then what are you saying? Abigail said
I'm just saying that it's a very big job for a... bill said
For a what? Abigail said
Well, for a...For a busy businesswoman and a mother, like yourself. It's just a lot of responsibility. Bill said
I see. But since you're my business partner, I guess you'd have no problem running the cafe if I take over as Mayor for a while. Unless, of course, it's too much responsibility... for you. Abigail said
Bring on the apron. Bill said
(She crosses the floor moves and jacket from the back of the door with an apron underneath it and yet printed on shoulder and get him a pat on the back)
Looking for something special? Sam said
I don't suppose you have any hair jewels, do you? Elizabeth said
Afraid I don't have anything quite so fancy. Sam said
Neither does mr. Yost. And the Mountie ball is in three days. Elizabeth said
And you'll be the belle of that ball, with or without those fancy hair bobs. Sam said
(Elizabeth chuckles)
Well, it seems like the mercantile's out of just about everything this week. Faith said
Maybe I can help. Sam said
Do you have any pepper? I'm trying to make a shepherd's pie. Faith said
Oh, actually it's paprika that you need. Elizabeth said
Right. Paprika. It's my first time. I'm not a very good cook. Faith said
Well, I wasn't any good at first either. It just takes practice. Elizabeth said
Paprika. Let me see. Um... nope. I'm all out. But maybe you've got some in your pantry. Sam said
I do! In fact, I was planning on making a shepherd's pie later tonight. You could come by if you like, and we could make it together? Elizabeth said
I'd like that! Faith said
All right. See you soon. Elizabeth said
Great! Faith said
Yeah, makes a fella happy seeing folks getting together for the holidays, caring for each other giving kindness. Now, that's what the Christmas spirit's All about, wouldn't you say? Sam said
That's exactly what I'd say. I guess it's a lucky thing you were out of paprika. Elizabeth said
Yep. Lucky indeed, hmm. Sam said
Meanwhile outside the apartment below Dottie's
Hopefully, that's place doesn't need too much work. Lee said
Well, it's only been vacant for six months. How bad could it be? Jack said
(Sighing heavily)
I remember it being different. Jack said
Ah, it's not as bad as it looks. My crew'll get it fixed up in no time. We just got to replace that window, panel up the walls, fix that hole. Lee said
No, it was for the chimney that was connected... ...to the stove which isn't there anymore. The liberty can't live here this time of year without a stove. Jack said
Well, what are the chances of getting one by Christmas? Lee
If I know Elizabeth, she'll find a way to make it happen. Jack said
Okay, well, let's get to it. Lee said
Meanwhile at back of the cafe (can crashes) (Door creaks opens)
You want to tell me what you're doing? Bill said
My apologies. I knocked over your trash but I'm putting everything back. Sam said
Doesn't look like "everything." Bill said
I kept a few scraps for dasher. That's him over there. Sam said
The dog eats scones? Bill said
He has a refined palate. Sam said
Do I know you? Bill said
Could be. You look familiar yourself. Do you play golf, by chance? Sam said
No. Didn't I arrest you once? Dougall flats petty theft? Bill said
The are of the law has embraced me from time to time, but those days are long gone. I'm a peddler, not a thief. Sam said
Well, there can't be much of a profit in being a peddler. Bill said
Helping people find what they need is what I do best, but it is more of a calling than a way to make a living, but that's all right. Sam said
Well, maybe for you, but I dasher might like something a little better than a stale scone. You want here and I'll heat up some leftover stew. Bill said
You're kinder than Saint Nickolas himself. Sam said
Well, I wouldn't go that far. Bill said
Oh, there's nothing wrong with spreading a little happiness. Sam said
That night at lee house.
He, honey. Well! Would you look at that? Lee said
Isn't it amazing? Rosemary said
No candles? Lee said
Lee, candles are so passé. Welcome to Christmas in the twenty-two-nd century. Rosemary said
If you say so. Lee said
Now, you just settle in right there while I finish making dinner. Rosemary said
All right. Lee said
Here's your newspaper. Rosemary said
Thank you lee said
Thank goodness I have the time to take care of my husband the way he truly deserves. Rosemary said
I don't want you to take the wrong way, but maybe you take care of me just a little too will. Lee said
I just want you to be happy. Rosemary said
I'm always happy when I'm around you. Lee said
Now I need to get back to the stove! I've made all your favorites. Steak and potatoes pie, Yorkshire pudding, dumplings and gravy. Rosemary said
What, all in the same night? Lee said
They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Rosemary said
They say anything about heartburn? Lee said
Hmm? Rosemary said
Nothing. Lee said
Meanwhile next door
(Chuckling) You know, I'd never had shepherd's pie until I came to valley spring . Now I think it's my favorite. Faith said
Well, next time, we can try spaghetti. Elizabeth said
Sounds like fun! Faith said
Are you going back to Hamilton for Christmas? Elizabeth said
(Sets tea cup down) No. I thought I'd be spending the holidays with my fiancé, but... (sighs) Faith said
You know it wasn't right with him. Elizabeth said
I know. To tell you the truth, I was worried I'd be spending the holidays alone. Faith said
Well, we are not going to let that happen. If you have some free time, I could really use some extra help on the Christmas committee. Elizabeth said
Okay! Well, I'd better get out of your way. Let you plan for the Mounties ball. Faith said
Oh, so you've heard about that? Elizabeth said
Oh ho! I think everyone has. You and jack are going to make a lovely couple. Faith said
Thank you. Elizabeth said
If you run across any eligible Mountie bachelors while you're there will you wrap one up for me? Faith said
With a big, red bow. Elizabeth said
(Both laughs)
Meanwhile at the saloon
Working on your sermon for Christmas Eve? Abigail said
I am so sorry. I lost track of time. Frank said
No, that's okay. Corey and I decorated the tree. And then I heard you were here, so I brought you some dessert. Abigail said
Oh, that's awfully kind of you. Frank said
So, how's it coming? Abigail said
for drafts, none of them good. Frank said
Oh. Still searching for the right inspiration? Abigail said
Something like that. Frank said
Well, just take a look around town ... all the happy faces, that should help. Abigail said
Not everyone's smiling. Frank said
Frank, I know you're upset about Nancy, but you did all you could. Abigail said
Yeah, and it wasn't good enough. Frank said
You're being too hard on yourself. Abigail said
You know, I asked everyone in the settlement where they might have gone, and no one knows. Frank said
You can't fix everyone. Abigail said
Nancy's not everyone, Abigail. I watched her husband die... couldn't do anything about it. Frank said
My father used to say we're all soldiers. Sometimes, we win... and sometime, we lose. But we fight the good fight, and that's what matters. And if you don't believe me ...ask him. Abigail said
I do. Frank said
The next morning at the cafe
The gentlemen at the table near the door would like to talk to the cook. Clara said
What do they want? Bill said
They say they don't like their eggs. Clara said
(Bangs skillet down)
Somebody here got a problem with my eggs? Bill said
Are you the cook? A man said
Yeah. And I get really steamed when people don't like what I serve. So let me ask you again you got a problem with my eggs? Bill said
No. No problem. A man said
Good. Make sure you leave the little lady a nice tip. (double-Taps table with rolling pin) how's your breakfast, constable? Bill said
No complaints here, Bill. (Chuckles) Jack said
Hey, Jack! I'm glad I found you. Lee said
Everything okay? Jack said
Actually, no. Um... I bought Rosemary a piece of jewelry for Christmas at an auction at Sotheby's right there. Paid a pretty penny for it, too. (As her hands a pamphlet) I went to get it this morning-– it was gone. Lee said
Oh, well... you sure it didn't crawl away? Jack said
Ha-ha. Make fun all you like but I will have you know –– these are all the rage in New York right now. Lady Janet has one just like it. What is in and jewelry box at the bottom of my trunk. Lee said
And you think it was stolen? Jack said
Well that must've been it was there yesterday. Lee said
Mr. County. Can I get you anything? Bill said
Actually now I couldn't eat a bite. Rosemary's been stuffing me like a holiday turkey. I do like the apron, though. Lee said
Oh thanks. I got it from Sam. Bill said
Sam? The peddler? Does anybody know anything about him? Lee said
I sent a wire to Mountie HQ. No one's heard I have "Sam Bailey." Jack said
Well that's strange. He told me he did some jail time. Bill said
They couldn't find any records. Jack said
Interesting. Lee said
Gentleman! How fortunate to catch you all together. Elizabeth said
Well how can we help you miss thatcher? Bill said
I am here on official Christmas business. Elizabeth said
Which is? Lee said
Well so far, none of the men in this town have stepped forward to play Santa on Christmas Eve, so I don't care how are you boys doing it just find someone to volunteer. Elizabeth said
Yes, ma'am. Jack said
Um, Elizabeth–– Lee said
Hmm? Elizabeth
With you in charge of Christmas this year, Rosemary has a lot of free time on her hands, which isn't necessarily a good thing. So I wondering if maybe you might–– Lee said
If I could give her something to do? Elizabeth said
It would save me a great deal of indignation, yes. Lee said
Consider it done. Elizabeth said
Thank you, I owe you. Lee said
How's it going? Elizabeth said
You tell me. Bill hasn't shot to any of my customers has he? Abigail said
Um, I don't think so. Elizabeth said
Well that's good. Have to get a new town budget approved by New Year's. It's going to be a while before I am in front of that stove again. Abigail said
Christmas Yves is only three days away. Are you sure you can handle the banquet, Abigail? Elizabeth said
Bill I will do most of the cooking but I'll do the coordinating. Just wish I had more time to spend with Corey. Abigail said
Well if you don't have a gift for him yet, I happened to know he really wants a Dog. Elizabeth said
He is getting a baseball cap. Abigail said
(Laughing Elizabeth)
Well I am officially out of a job, just in time for Christmas. Dottie said
Martin fired you? Abigail said
Oh that's right, And he won't let nurse Cora anywhere near him. It's like he's trying to shut out the world. I thought I could get through to him but I can't I need a cup of tea please. Dottie said
Oh. Abigail said
Maybe you should talk to him Abigail. Elizabeth said
I could try but not last time I did he nearly bit off my head. Abigail said
He listens to you more than anyone else. Elizabeth said
Well ... I May be unemployed, but on the bright side Rosemary brought over and then down she's lending you for the mountain Christmas ball I have all my time in the world to do the alterations. Dottie said
Alterations? Elizabeth said
She said it needs to be let out in the waste and taken in other places. Dottie said
Excuse me? "Other places"? Elizabeth said
She looks at Dottie as if she wants her to answer but she just sips her teeth and does the same to Abigail
Outside Can I give dasher a treat? Holly said
(Dasher Barks) That sounds like a yes. You must be excited, with Christmas right around the corner. Sam said
I guess so. Holly said
Well is there something wrong? Sam said
It's the nativity pageant. My friend, Anna, and I both want to play Mary. Holly said
Ah. And you think you deserve it more. Sam said
Well, I do. Holly said
Well, seeing as it's Christmas, maybe you should let your friend have the part. Sam said
Well, seeing as it's Christmas, maybe she should let me have the part. Holly said
(Wry chuckle) it always feels better to give than receive. You take Dasher, here, why did you ask to feed him a treat? Sam said
Because dogs like treats. Holly said
You see? It's not the joy you get from something, it's the joy you get from giving something. Sam said (Munching from dasher as he gives him a treat)
My teacher said the same thing. Holly said
Well, she's one smart lady. Sam said
I have to find Anna. Holly said
You're up early, pastor. Sam said
Got work to do. Frank said
Ah. Finish that sermon? Sam said
You ask too many questions. Frank said
You should like a man who's lost the Christmas spirit, my friend. I got just the thing for it. Right here. Dr. Othon's miracle elixir. Sam said
I don't look for answers in the bottom of a bottle. Frank said
I'm guessing there was a time when you did. Sam said
Ancien history. Frank said
And then... you found answers from above? Sam said
Pretty much. Least till now. Frank said
What changed? Sam said
Couldn't help a friend. She took her son and left town. Frank said
It seems to me you've had it pretty easy here so far. Town of good god-fearing people... maybe the fact you've been given a challenge means you're ready for something more. Sam said
Or maybe I'm not. Frank said
Got my work cut out for me with this one. Sam said
Meanwhile at school
If get a cabbage patch for Christmas, she can have a tea party with brownie. Maggie said
Brownie would like that. Opal said
They can visit Ruby's dollhouse. Maggie said
Maggie? If you and opal want to come to the cafe with your doll, you can have a real tea party. Corey said
Do you really mean it? Maggie said
I'll ask miss Abigail, but I bet she'll say yes. Corey said
Miss thatcher? Holly said
Mm-hmm? Elizabeth said
Anna And I need to talk to you. Holly said
About what? Elizabeth said
We've been thinking about the pageant, and we think ruby should get to play Mary. Anna said
You do? Elizabeth said
She's new it would mean a lot to her. Holly said
But I thought you both wanted to play Mary. Elizabeth said
We did, but we decided that being friends is more important than fighting all the time. Anna said
Emily? Is there something wrong? Elizabeth said
This was Harper's ornament. Emily said
You miss him, don't you? Elizabeth said
Yeah. Emily said
When I'm worried about someone I say a prayer for them. Elizabeth said
I'll say a prayer for Harper at bedtime to night Emily said
I will, too. Elizabeth said
Meanwhile at the saloon
Well, mr. Newlywed, how's married life? Bill said
It's everything I thought it would be. Lee said
I've done enough interrogators to know an evasive answer when I hear one. Bill said
The first rule of a happy marriage –– don't do anything that Rosemary might take the wrong way. Lee said
Gentlemen! How are we going to settle this? Bill said
Darts. Jack said
Loser wears the big red suit. John said
So who goes first? Hickman said
I feel lucky. Bill said (thud)
Well I guess we know who's playing Santa. Hickman said
As someone wise once said, there's nothing wrong with spreading a little happiness. Bill said
Later that night with Carolers music 🎶singing deck the halls with balls of Holly Fa-la- la-la-la La-la-la 'Tis the season to be jolly 🎶
As the café door opens Thank you, only three days till Christmas, and there's still lots to do. Elizabeth said
It'll all be taken care of by the we leave. Jack said
It's been years since I've been to a Christmas ball, and I've never been to a officer ball. Elizabeth said
To tell you the truth, I'm a little nervous. Jack said
Nervous? Why? Elizabeth said
There is gonna be dancing. Jack said
(Chuckles) And? Elizabeth said
And, I'm pretty good at the two-step, but I've never really gotten the hang of the waltz. Jack said
The waltz is easy. Elizabeth said
Do you think that you could show me? Jack said
(Laughing) right here, right now? Elizabeth said
Yeah. Why not? Jack said
Well, there isn't any music. Elizabeth said (tinny Music begins to play 🎼 )
I couldn't help overhearing. I'll leave you to it. Sam said
(chuckling) you put one hand here... and your other hand goes on my waist. Elizabeth said
I like this already. Jack said
Jack, you're not playing attention. Elizabeth said
Now, that's where you're wrong. Jack said (as he still kiss for Elizabeth)
The next morning in Middle Of town
I heard our apartment is going to be a lot of work. Douglas will play you back just as we're settled. Whitley said
Mrs liberty, all you have to do is be a good neighbor. Jack said
Just the same, we don't like talking charity. Whitley said
We can talk about all that later. Jack said
(Voices rising in the background at town Square)
What is this new piece you've acquired? Dottie said
Isn't it beguiling? Florence said
That's... one word for it. Molly said
Excuse me. Jack said
It's amazing you would buy that for yourself. Dottie said
Well, I needed something special to wear for Christmas Eve. Florence said
Sorry to interrupt, ladies, but I need to speak to Mrs. Blakeley for a second. Jack said
Of course. Dottie said
Thank you. That is an interesting piece of jewelry. Jack said
Thank you, Constable. Florence said
Is it new? Jack said
I bought it from that lovely peddler, mr. Bailey. He said it's one of a kind. Florence said
I bet it is. Too bad there's only one, though. It would look great with the gown Elizabeth is wearing to the Mountie ball. Jack said
Oh... oh, I'm sorry, I can't. Florence said
I know that you can't put a price on something like that, Mrs. Blakeley, But I'd be willing to give you twice what you paid for it. It would mean a lot to me. And then you could get yourself something even nicer. Jack said
Well... there was a dragonfly pendant, a truly stunning piece. But it cost... $ ten dollar Florence said
You know what Mrs Blakeley? I think you deserve to have a stunning Christmas. Jack said
Well, if you insist. Florence said
Does Dasher know any tricks? Corey said
Most dogs like to play catch. Sam said
Not with this ball. ️ Corey said
Hey, Corey. Aren't you late for school? Jack said
I guess so. Corey said
What can I do for you Constable? Sam said
Well, I just spoke to mrs. Blakeley, And she told me that you sold her this special piece of jewelry. Jack said
So I did. Hard to forget that one. Sam said
You mind telling me where you got it? Jack said
Oh, I Buy and sell a lot of things. Hard to keep track of them all. Sam said
Really? Because this one happens to be stolen property. Jack said
I'm sorry to hear that. Sam said
Maybe the circuit judge can jog your memory, but I'm afraid he won't be coming through town till after Christmas. Jack said
I still can't remember. Sam said
That's a shame, because you know I'm going to have to arrest you. Jack said
Well, you gotta do, what you gotta do. Sam said
Meanwhile at school
May I have your attention, please. All right, everyone. It is time to assign the parts for the nativity pageant. Now, several of you have shown excellent Christmas Spirit, and I am very very proud of you. All right. Ruby... you'll be playing the role of Mary. Holly and Anna ...there will be two angels this year because the two of you have both been angels. Corey, you'll be playing one of the Wise Man and Robert and Timmy will also be Wise Man. Elizabeth said
Do we get to ride camels? Robert said
(Laughs) I'm afraid they were fresh out of camels in Bakersfield. But your new costumes should be arriving first thing tomorrow morning. (Door opens) Um, Emily, would you mind finishing reading the cast list? Thank you Elizabeth said
Opal, you're going to be the little drummer girl. Emily said
If this is about the gown for the Mountie ball, I'm kind of in the middle of something. Elizabeth said
Not at all. Dottie's finishing the alterations as we speak. No, I am here because Lee told me you were in desperate need of help with the Christmas festivities. Rosemary said
Well, it wasn't really an emergency. Elizabeth said
Now, I know it's hard for you to admit that you are in over your head, and you don't want to exhaust yourself before the Mountie ball. You certainly don't want any more of those unsightly little worry lines ... Rosemary said
I don't have worry lines. Elizabeth said
Of course you don't. Thankfully, I have done dozens of these Christmas pageants, and I am ready to jump right in. Rosemary said
Actually, what I really need is some help stringing popcorn for the Christmas tree. Elizabeth said
Stringing popcorn? Rosemary said
Mm-hmm jump right in. Elizabeth said
That evening at the saloon
Martin. Abigail said
I told you I don't want to talk about any town business. Martin said
That's not why Im here. Why did you fire Dottie? Abigail said
Fire Dottie because I no longer had use for her services. Martin said
But she was trying to take care of you until you got back on your feet. Abigail said
And why are you here? You here because you care about me? Martin said
Is that so hard to believe? Abigail said
A while ago, that might have meant something to me. Martin said
A while ago? Abigail said
Believe it or not, I cared about what happened to you after your husband passed. That's one of the reasons why I invested in your cafe. Martin said
It was a business deal. You were just trying to make money. Abigail said
Well, you can believe whatever you like. Martin said
Martin, I know that you're upset about a lot of things. Abigail said
Here's what you know. What you know is that I don't want your help. You're here because you want to feel good about the fact that you made an effort. You're here because you want to be able to go to sleep at night, comforted by the fact that you know that you tried. Martin said
You're just saying that because you think I took your job. Abigail said
Then why can't we just stop playing games here? Why can't you just admit that you enjoy feeling morally superior to the rest of us? You're here for you. Not for me. For you. Martin said
If you really believe that, then there is nothing more to say. Abigail said
Well, I really believe that, so I guess we're done. Martin said
WE'RE DONE. Abigail said
(As he huffs and shovels off to open the door, then slammed it shuts)
Oh! Abigail said
Meanwhile at the jailhouse (With both rap and dasher on the floor and jack polishing his shoes)
Sure could use some more coffee. Sam said
Really? Most people don't like my coffee. Jack said
Well, most people forget to be grateful. Sam said
That's true enough. Got any family, Sam? Jack said
The world is my family. Sam said
The world's your family. You sure are hard to read. Jack said
What I do is who I am. Got a special occasion coming up? Sam said
The Mountie and officers Christmas ball. Jack said
I bet you're taking that pretty schoolteacher. Sam said
Yep. Gonna hire a carriage, go in style. I got it all planned out. Jack said
Yeah, you seem like the kind of guy who always has everything planned. Sam said
I guess I do. Jack said
Please are a funny thing you know. Sam said
How's that? Jack said
Well, they don't always turn out the way you expect. Take me, for instance. I didn't plan on spending the night in jail. Sam said
No, I suppose you didn't. Jack said
A few hours ago, I was hungry, cold. Now I got a roof over my head, a hot meal. Sometimes, what you don't want turns out to be exactly the thing you need. It's kinda the story of my life. Sam said
How's that? Jack said
Well, time was, like most people, I wanted to be rich and powerful. Important. Well, I never got to be those things, so I had to make a different life for myself. Had to figure out what I really wanted. Sam said
Well... I guess we all got to figure that out sooner or later. Jack said
Rep. And when life doesn't go the way you want, it's a good time to stop and think about it. Sam said
Meanwhile at the cafe

🎶Four calling birds🎶 Corey said
🎶Three French hens 🎶 bill said
🎶Two turtles doves 🎶 Corey said (as the door opens)
🎶And a partridge in a pear tree 🎶 Bill, Abigail and Corey said (the Door closes )
You're a really good singer, mr. Avenue. Corey said
And a good babysitter. Abigail said
Well, thanks to you both. Bill said
Now off to bed with you young man. It's late. Good night. Abigail said
Night! Corey said
(Exhales heavily) Abigail
As a rule, it's good to have dinner before midnight. Bill said
Well, with the town budget committee meetings hearings, and all these invoices to pay, I must've lost track of time. Abigail said
So, how was your visit with Martin today? Or should I ask? Bill said
Well, let's just say it wasn't pleasant. Abigail said
Abigail, forget about Martin. You're trying to hard. Bill said
You're absolutely right. And there's so much to do. I had no idea how much work went into running a town. Abigail said
Well, that's my point exactly. Martin should be thanking you for relieving him of his duties. Bill said
And I should be thinking you for babysitting Corey. And for this soup! It's almost as good as mine! Abigail said
I won't tell if you won't. Bill said
The next morning outside the jailhouse
Jack! Rosemary said
Rosemary. You're up early. Jack said
I didn't catch a wink of sleep after I heard what had happened. How could you arrest that lovely old man? Rosemary said
Mr. Bailey? Just doing my job. Jack said
You have made a terrible mistake. Rosemary said
How so? Jack said
He didn't steal that... oh! ... horrible pin. Rosemary said
How do you know what he stole, Rosemary? Jack said
(Chuckles) funny thing that. Rosemary said
Amuse me. Jack said
Well... I just happened to be straightening out Lee's things when lo and behold I accidentally found this small box. Rosemary said
You accidentally unwrapped it and opened it? Jack said
The details aren't important. What is important is... have you seen... that... that thing? Rosemary said
I have. Jack said
(Sighs heavily) well, then you know I could never have worn it. Rosemary said
So you sold it to Sam? Jack said
Well, I didn't want to hurt Lee's feelings. I thought that, if he thought that he had lost it, well, then he would just pick something else out. Something a little less –— ugh! ...terrifying. I know he means well! Oh, jack! I didn't know what to do! Rosemary said
I'm gonna tell you exactly what you're going to do. Your husband bought you a very special gift for your first Christmas together. So... you are going to put it right back where you found it then on Christmas morning when he gives it to you will act surprised and delighted. Jack said
"Surprised and delighted"? Rosemary said
You're a very talented actress. Jack said
It'll be the performance of a lifetime. Do you promise not to say a word about what happened? Rosemary said
My lips are sealed. (an couple of minutes late) you should've told me Rosemary country sold you the pin. Jack said
Oh, it wouldn't have been right! Sam said
Because. Jack said
Well, the way I see it, it gave the young lady an opportunity to learn a lesson about telling the truth, which is exactly what she needed for Christmas. So it all worked out the way it was supposed to. Come on, dasher. Sam said
(Door closes) (an couple of minutes late) outside
Pastor! You're just the man I want to see. I got something for you. Sam said
I don't think you have anything I need. Frank said
Don't be too sure. What do you say? A man of God can always use a bible. And I'll let it go for cheap. Sam said
That's okay. I've got plenty of those at Church. Frank said
Well it is pretty old. I got it from golden state penitentiary. They were giving away some old books. Sam said
Wait. Do you mind if I look at that for a second? I did time at golden state. Frank said
Lot of people did time at golden state. I saved it because of the inscription on the back. Sam said
The saint Francis prayer. "Lord, lat me be an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope." Frank said
It's a favorite of mine. Sam said
Mine too. Which is why I wrote it there (Astonished Charle) this was my bible. Frank said
Is that right? Oh... you must've changed a lot of lives with this book. And I have a feeling you're gonna change a lot more. Like that friend you were telling me about the one with the boy. Sam said
She left without telling anyone where she was going there's no way to find her. Frank said
Three wise man found Bethlehem by following a star. Sam said
Well, they had a lot of help. Frank said
So have you, my friend. Sam said
How much you want for wthat? Frank said
Oh, take it. The way I look at it, I'm just returning it to it's rightful owner. Good morning miss yost. Sam said
Katie! Katie, when Nancy Andrews came to you for supplies did she happen to mention where she was headed? Frank said
I don't think so. Wait she did say she needed enough rations to get to Albert hills Katie said
Albert hills. Thanks frank said
Looks like the pastor just found his star after all. Sam said
Meanwhile at liberty A part meant (hammering)
Oh, it's pretty snug. You want to hand me that mallet? Lee said
Yeah. John said
Thank you. Lee said
Yeah. John said
(Mallet and hammer pounding)(wood groaning )
Watch out! Jack said (crashing) (As one of the ceiling beams comes down they all just missed it)
Meanwhile in town
The freight wagon's late. Elizabeth said
That silly wagon is always running late. I'm sure it'll be here in no time. Rosemary said
I want to make sure everything's taken care of before we leave for the ball tonight. Elizabeth said
Don't you worry about it. I will tie up any loose ends. Rosemary said
You will? Elizabeth said
Of course. You asked for my help, and Christmas is the season for giving. Rosemary said
Pardon me. I thought I should deliver this in person. Ned said
Thank you. "Train derailed outside Lost hills track closed" Elizabeth said
There won't be any deliveries till after Christmas. Ned said
Oh! Rosemary said
Some time later at the cafe
Everyone's going to be disappointed. Elizabeth said
It's not that bad. Abigail said
Yes it is. What am I going to tell the children? Timmy wanted a train set, and Ruby had her heart set on a doll's house. And poor Maggie, all she wanted was a "cabbage patch Doll." Elizabeth said
Maggie isn't going to get her doll? Corey said
Corey, why don't you run outside and play for a little while? Abigail said
The stove I ordered for the liberty's was on that train. Elizabeth said
They'll understand. Abigail said
I know, but it's... it's so unfair. I better let jack know. Elizabeth said
Outside the cafe
No, we're fine, but we could use some help shoring up the beam. Jack said
(Sighing) Elizabeth
Excuse me. Elizabeth! Jack said
Jack— Elizabeth said
I've got some bad news. Jack said
You heard about the train? Elizabeth said
It gets worse. A beam fell at the apartment we were fixing up for the liberty family. Now, we're all okay, but we're behind schedule. Jack said
What are we gonna do? Elizabeth said
Whatever we have to. Now, we said we're gonna make this a special Christmas for the town, we're gonna deliver. Even if we have to work straight through till Christmas Eve. Jack said
But the Mountie ball... Elizabeth said
Yeah. I really want us to go... but I think this is more important. Jack said
I'm so glad you said that. We can't leave now. Elizabeth said
So... what's the next step? Jack said
An little later at the saloon.(bustling chatter)
If I could have everyone's attention... just because the freight wagon didn't come through doesn't mean we have to give up on Christmas. It just means we have to change our plans, because everything we need, we have right here, in valley spring . Elizabeth said
Where are we going to get toys for the children? Molly said
Well, we'll make them ourselves. Elizabeth said
There simply isn't time! Christmas Eve is tomorrow night Florence said (murmuring in agreement)
We can do it if we all pitch in. Elizabeth said
When I was a girl, we made dolls from cornhusks and clothespins. Abigail said
Well there's plenty of scrap wood at the mill. to build toys with, if we want. Lee said
Well, what about the new homes for the settlers? I heard they can't be finished in time. Dottie said
Anything can be fixed. All we need are a few extra sets of hands. Jack said
What are we going to do about the stove for Douglas and Whitley's place? Molly said
I've kept my old stove, but the bottom's rusted out. Ned said
We've got a new welder in town. Mr. Eduard I'll see what he can do. Jack said
What about costumes for the nativity pageant? Faith said?
I could probably whip something up. Dottie said
I have a wonderful idea! Why don't we hold the nativity pageant right here? We could decorate it to look like an old barn. It'll be like a real manger. Rosemary said
There is still Christmas Eve dinner. Abigail said
For about hundred of us. Florence said
Leave that to me. Everyone go home and look through your pantries. Then go to your neighbors house, and look through their pantries. Whatever you can spare bring to the café. Bill said
I think this calls for a vote. Jack said
All those in favor of saving Christmas, say "aye." Abigail said
(All) Aye! (Chatter rises)
Meanwhile outside
What can I do for you, young man? Sam said
I need a toy. Do you have any left? Corey said
I'm sorry, it's almost Christmas I'm all out of toys. Sam said
Oh. Corey said
Uh, what was it you were looking for? Sam said
A doll. It was for a friend. Corey said
I see! You're trying to be a good boy so you can get a part in the Christmas pageant. Sam said
I already got the part. Corey said
Then you don't need to give her the doll. Sam said
I just want to, I guess. And I promise she could have a tea party at Miss Abigail's. Corey said
Now that I think on it... I just might have something left. Let me check. Oh... it's not very fancy, I'm afraid. Just an old "cabbage patch" doll. Sam said
That's just what she wanted! Corey said
Imagine that. Sam said
Can I buy it? Corey said
Uh... it's my last one. Sam said
I've got seven cents! Corey said
She's worth more than that, wouldn't you say? Sam Said
It's all I've got. Corey said
Maybe we can make a trade. Sam said
Meanwhile at the saloon
I bought these cotton bottles from the Infirmary. I thought we could use them as stuffing for in the dolls. Faith said
Oh those will do you very nicely. Molly said
I haven't done much sewing A part from stretching the cut or scrapes. Faith said
Warm and very glad you are here. Elizabeth said
Indeed. Molly said
I've never built a house or a doll before. Ned said
Oh, it's just building a real house only, um, smaller. Hickman said
Yes but a real house has a set of plans. Ned said
I took the liberty of drawing something up. It's got the flavor of a frank Loyd Wright colonial revival Hickman said
Great. great. Ned said
Ah, this is pretty much goner. Bottom's all rested out. Yeah, and the firebox is cracked, too. Mr. Eduard said
So? How long do you think it'll it take you to fix it? Jack Said

I'll do you my best. Mr. Eduard said
Thanks, Gabriel. Jack Said
Frank you look like you're headed somewhere in a hurry. Jack said
Nancy Andrews. Frank said

Not much of it. Bill said
Ned brought over in the flower and the sugar and the potatoes but he says it's the last of it. Clara said
And you knocked on every door? Bill said
Everyone was counting on the freight wagon so there wasn't much left how are you going to make a Christmas Eve banquet out of this? Clara said
We start with oyster soup fish stew potato pie bacon and beans and we finish with with carrots and chicken surprise casserole. Bill said
But we don't have any chicken. (Laughs)Clara said
That's the surprise bill said
Meanwhile at the saloon
What's the count? Elizabeth said
Including the ones that you brought, we have a dozen that are ready, and that leaves twenty-either to go. Abigail said
We still need to do the finishing touches on the tree in the backdrop for the play. Elizabeth said
And it's getting late. Abigail said
Do you think they'll work this hard in the North Pole? Elizabeth said
Next time I see Santa I'm going to ask him. Abigail said
(Chuckles) Abigail... Elizabeth said
Sometime later at the café (bangs Door shut) (jolting Bill Who hade fill asleep at the kitchen table)
Abigail... what time is it. Bill said
It's nearly Three clock where is Clara? Abigail said
I sent her upstairs to take a break. How is things going at the saloon? Bill said
Well people are fading fast we're gonna have to do something if we want to finish on time. Abigail said
Yeah. I guess it's time for my secret weapon. Bill said
You have a secret weapon? Abigail said

(Charles) this is going to sound crazy but I'm kind of glad freight train didn't come through. Elizabeth said
You are right that does sound crazy. Jack Said
I always knew the people of Valley Spring Really cared about each other, but I never realized how much. Elizabeth said
Well I guest good things really do happen when plans change. Jack said
Truer words were never spoken. I'll hitch up the horses and we can go get that stove. Sam said

Meanwhile out on the trail to Albert hills (Fire crackling) (hooves clopping)
Pastor. Nancy said
You wouldn't by chance have a cup of coffee for your weary traveler would ya? Frank said
Of course. Nancy said
What are you doing way out here? Harper said
I was worried about you and your mom. Frank said
You don't have to worry about us. Well be fine Nancy said
So where are you headed? Frank said
Someplace new. There are too many memories in I valley spring . Nancy said
They're not all bad. Harper said
It's where your father died, Harper. Nancy said

Harper. Nancy said
You still have friends there, and they'd like you to come back. Frank said
And I'd like you to finish your coffee and leave. I already sent I didn't want anything from you. Nancy said
Yeah you did. Then I remembered a prayer that I learned a long time ago... " Lord, let me be an instrument of thy place. Where there is hatred, let me show my love, where in there is doubt, faith..." frank said
"... where there is despair, hope, where there is darkness, light and were and there is" Harper said
...sadness joy." Harper and frank said
Saint Francis prayer. Frank said
My dad taught it to me. It was his favorite. Harper said
I didn't know. Nancy said
I think you're a husband would like you to come back, Nancy. Frank said
Dad was the one who brought us to Valley spring , mama. You used to say that he always knew what was best. Harper said
I think he still dies. Frank said
Meanwhile in town
Thanks, Sam jack said
Hey Jack you got a minute? Lee said
Yeah lee. Hey. I just took the stove over to the liberty's place uh some of the ladies are cleaning it up now. Jack said
Oh great well then I have more good news. Remember the gift that I bought for Rosemary that went missing? Lee said
The pin? Jack said
The pin. Yes well ... turns out that it was at the bottom of the trunk after all. It slipped behind the line. I don't know what happened. Anyway I'm really really sorry if I caused any trouble. Lee said
No trouble at all I'm just glad you found it. Jack said
Me too and I can't wait to see Rosemary's face when she opens that box. Lee said
I bet she's going to be surprised and delighted. Jack said
Hope so anyway I'll see you tonight okay? Lee said
Meanwhile at the cafe
I think if we put the buffet against the wall and move all the tables out there'll be enough standing room for everyone. Abigail said
Christmas is officially back on track! Elizabeth said
Oh, Except that you and Jack Didn't get to go to the Mountie ball. Abigail said
It was the right decision to stay. Elizabeth said
(Footsteps) can I go play with Robert? Corey said
Yes if you're back in time to get ready for the pension. Abigail said
Okay. Corey said
Corey, where's your baseball? Elizabeth said
I... traded it. Corey said
Traded it? With who? Abigail
A little whole later outside
Mrs. Stanton I don't think we have had the pleasure of a formal introduction. Sam Said
No but I've heard all about you and I know you've met my little boy. Abigail said
Corey. Yeah, I saw him earlier. Sam said
oh I'm not looking for him. I came to talk to you. About the baseball. Abigail said
It was a fair trade. Sam said
May I ask what he got in extreme? Abigail said
Humanity, kindness. Everything Christmas is all about. Sam said
I don't think you answered my question. Abigail said
Corey traded that ball for something one of his friends wanted. He said she'd be heartbroken if she didn't get it for Christmas. Sam said
A "cabbage patch" doll? Abigail said
One in the same! Sam said
And you had one? Abigail said
Yes, indeed it's funny how those kind of things just work out sometimes. Sam said
He really loved that baseball. I can't believe he did that for Maggie. Abigail said
He's a pretty special young man. Sam said
Yes, he is. We're serving Christmas Yves dinner tonight for everyone in the town. I... well, I hope you'll join us. Abigail said
Well that's a fine invitation, but I think I'm heading out soon. Don't want to wear out my welcome. Sam said
Well if you change your mind we'd love to have you. Abigail said
How about you Mrs. Stanton? Any last-minute shopping to do? Sam said
Oh, I think I've gotten Christmas taking care of. Abigail said
You sure you haven't forgotten anyone? Sam said
I'm sure. Well... there is Martin Gowen. But he doesn't want any thing from me or anyone else. Abigail said
Yeah I saw him out for a walk. He looks like a real sourpuss to me. Sam said
That's him all right. Abigail said
So. Why are you worrying about him at all? Sam said
I don't now. Maybe because he's one of us for better or worse. Abigail said
Have you told him that? Sam said
Well he didn't give me a chance he said I was pretending to care to keep up appearances. Abigail said
Oh, that can't be true. Sam said
It's not. Abigail said
Well ...(sighs) guess I'm right out of luck. Sam said
Well how's that? Abigail said
Because the best gift you can give the old sourpuss for Christmas is the truth. Even though I'd rather sell you one necktie. Sam said
(Laughs) I think I will pass on that. Thank you for everything on Mr. Bailey. You've been a real angel. Abigail said
Oh, I have been called worse. Sam said
Meanwhile at that apartment the mayors office (Knocking)
Meant to lock that door. I thought we were done here. Martin said
We were and then some one started me thinking... and I realized something... there is a reason you're here Martin. There is a reason you came back. Abigail said
I don't need to listen to this right now. Martin said
Yes you do. And you're going to hear me out, whether you like it or not. You came back to Valley Springbecause this is your home, and the people here are your family. Do you need us Martin. And the truth is I need you. So you were right after all. I am here for me. I am here because I have a town to run and I need your help to do it and I won't let you push me away. I'll be back tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that. Because I am giving you a second chance for Christmas. A chance to work together and a chance to start over. Merry Christmas Martin. And welcome home. Abigail said

" and then show me a sign unto you you shall find the Baba wrapped in swaddling clothes laying in a manger." Elizabeth said
Music

Oh, of course! Elizabeth said
I don't have a sermon prepared for you tonight, it's hard to follow in the greatest story ever told, so I won't even try. But I do want to remind everyone that the greatest gift we receive is God's love. The greatest gift that we give is the love we have for one other. Merry Christmas, everyone. Merry Christmas! Frank said
All right, everyone, well, I believe our program is over, unless, of course, I'm forgetting something. Elizabeth said

Maybe I'm asking too much. Elizabeth said
Looks like everyone enjoyed themselves Sam said
I believe they did. Jack said
I'm surprised to see you're still here. Isn't there some where else you're supposed to be tonight? Sam Said
Not that I know of. Jack said
Think again. Sam said
How much? Jack said
No charge. Sam said
John! I need your help with something. Jack said
Of course. John said
Mr. Bentley. Are you sure you don't won't to join us for supper? Abigail said
Well that's very kind of you but it's time for me to leave. Sam said
I hope you'll come back and visit us. Abigail said
I will. But in the meantime I have a favor to ask. I have a long trip ahead of me and dasher here he never signed up for that. He needs a real home. Do you know what anyone in town? that I could trust to look after him someone kind? Well thank Good heart? Sam said
I know the perfect person. Abigail said
