The next morning at Elizabeth's house

Good morning mrs. Thorsten. jack said

Good morning mr. Thorsten. You're going to a
spoil me. Elizabeth said

I'm going to try. I made eggs. I know you like them sunny side up, but I broke a few. Jack said

I'm sure I will love whatever you make. Elizabeth said

Oh, so I checked, and the cubs are gonna be in town during our honeymoon. Jack said

Oh, that's great! We'll definitely have to take in a game while we're there. I can't wait. A whole week in Chicago with you. Elizabeth said

It's gonna be a trip to remember. Jack said

Next door

Here you go. Fresh, piping hot. Today's the day we set up the donation tables outside the mercantile. I really hope the weather holds up. You know, the bank closure really has had a terrible impact on the town. With no cash to buy things, families are really feeling the pinch. Rosemary said

Yeah. Lee said

So... I went through your things. I thought you could spare your old blue striped shirt... And your green-plaid pants. Rosemary said

No! No, no, no, no. I love the green plaid pants. Lee said

Oh, so, you were listening. Rosemary said

Sweetheart, I am always listening. Lee said

Really? Rosemary said

Mm-hmm. Lee said

Then what time did I say- - ...we ware invited to jack and Elizabeth's for dinner? Rosemary said

Um... (as he sipped he's coffee) ...6:00 Lee said

I mean ... 7:00. 8:00? Lee said

Lee... didn't say anything about Jack or Elizabeth. Rosemary said

You tricked me! Fine. You can have the gray twills, but I want to keep the plaid. Lee said

I was kidding about the pants. The donation table is only for items people can actually use. Rosemary said

Ouch. Lee said

Outside on the Pond

Pastor Frank, I think I saw some fish over there. Corey said

Well, you better go get them. Frank said

okay. Corey said

I missed this. Frank said

Have you heard from Children's Hospital? Abigail said

Not yet. They said they'd let me know when they find a replacement. Frank said

Tell me about the people there. Abigail said

There was this one boy- - good kid- - kind of reminded me of Corey. His name was Anthony. He had pneumonia. Doctors didn't have much hope for him. They g gave him two weeks to live. I used to sit and read read with him every morning. Sometimes, scripture... mostly Peter Pan. Frank said (laughs)

What happened to him? Abigail said

Well, it was a long road, but he made a full recovery. Yeah, he marched himself right out of that hospital. The doctors couldn't understand it. Frank said

But you could. Abigail said

Survival requires a strength of will. Anthony wouldn't give up. I wouldn't let him. Frank said

He was lucky he had you there. Abigail said

Meanwhile A cross town at Elizabeth and Jack house (knocking)

Good morning, lovebirds! Are you awake? Rosemary said

Come on in, rosemary. Elizabeth said

Is Jack still here? Rosemary said

He's upstairs. Elizabeth said

So? How are the newlyweds? Need I even ask? I'm sure two of you are over the moon! Rosemary said

We are, thank you. If you're looking for the box of clothes, it's just there. Elizabeth said

Everyone has been so generous. I really think a lot of people are going to benefit from this. Oh! My... why, look at that. Rosemary said

(Chuckling) that was Jack. Elizabeth said

It's very romantic. Rosemary said

Hmm. He is all that and more. Elizabeth said

Oh! Rosemary

(Gasps Elizabeth) (both laughing) That's very sweet. Rosemary said

Jack and I have been writing each other notes. This one is for him to meet me at Abigail's cafe later. I have a surprise for him. Elizabeth said

Oh! Wedded bliss... Mm, there's nothing quite like it. Rosemary said

Meanwhile at the saloon

Well, that coat looks nice. Andrew said

It's a little long. And there's a hole in the pocket. Laurel said

Well, you can saw it. Andrew said

There we go. Lee said

I'm just so pleased. Look at the turnout. Rosemary said

It's a great turnout. Anyway, I got to get to work. Aww. Bye. How are you doing? Lee said

Good. A neighbor man said

Anyway, I got to go. Okay. Lee said

Lee! I'll walk you to work. Rosemary said

Meanwhile In the school yard

You got it, Philip! Corey said

What happened? Robert said

I'm sorry. The sun was in my eyes. Philip said

What sun? Robert said

I'm sorry. I couldn't see the ball. Philip said

What do you mean? It was coming right at you. Philip said

(Cowbell clanging) time for class, everyone! Elizabeth said

I can't believe you didn't catch the ball. Anna said

I said I was sorry! Philip said

Okay, Anna, enough. Everyone misses the ball now and again. Elizabeth said

I'm sorry, Mrs. Thorsten. Anna said

Don't worry, Philip. It's only a game. Elizabeth said

But I made a big mistake. Philip said

Everyone makes mistakes. Besides, you'll catch the next pop fly, and then no one will remember any of this. Run along. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the lee county office (door opens)

Well, hello! What is all this? Lee said

I brought you a nice, hot lunch. A titan of industry can't run on an empty stomach. Rosemary said

I was just going to grab something from the saloon. Lee said

Or more like get busy working and not eat anything at all. Rosemary said

Oh, you know me so well. (Thump) oh! Oh. It's all right. It's just, uh... just a little spill. There's lots left. Looks delicious. Lee said

Yes. Well...Enjoy. Rosemary said

Oh, uh, thank you. Lee said

Meanwhile at the sheriffs office (door opens)

Sheriff Avenue? Laurel said

Can I help you? Bill said

I wanted to report something. Laurel said

What's that? Bill said

I got this coat from one of the donation tables, and I found a note in it. Laurel said

"Lucy," or "Livvy," or... Bill said

I couldn't make out the name either. Laurel said

"Your constant laughter fills my heart. Never lose the joy you find in everything around you..." Bill said

Whoever this coat belonged to might want that note back. Laurel said

Oh, I don't think so, otherwise that wouldn't have given it away in the first place. Bill said

No, I found the note in the lining of the pocket while I was sawing it. It fell through a hole. Laurel said

Well, Laurel, I'm not really sure what you want me to do with this. Bill said

I was thinking you could help me find who the owner was. Laurel said

I have more important things to do than try to track down the owner of an old coat. Bill said

You had our feet on the desk when I come in. Laurel said

Well, looks can be deceiving. Bill said

Okay, it's just... I heard you used to be good at solving things. Laurel said

"Used to"? My title was "chief Forensic Investigator."Bill said

Okay. Laurel said

Come back tomorrow and we'll ask around. Bill said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Just a few more steps. Okay. Now wait here. And no peeking. Corey said

(Laughs) I know you're there, Elizabeth. I know your perfume. Jack said

That was kind of the idea. You can open your eyes now. Elizabeth said

Our first date! Jack said

I know even then that I wanted to be your wife. Elizabeth said

This is... y-you are- - I mean, uh... Jack said

I know. Elizabeth said

Everything's perfect, Elizabeth. Jack said

Abigail made all the same dishes. Shall we eat? Elizabeth said

Actually... I want to change something tonight. I want to dance with my wife before dinner. Jack said

I heard you were in here. Hickman said

Oh, we were about to have an early dinner, Hickman. Elizabeth said

I'm sorry. I was checking on some of our timber, and when I rode by your land I saw man's up there. Hickman said

Doing what? Jack said

I don't know, but one of them was mr. Jennis, and he looked very... intense. Hickman said

What's going on? Jack said

What are you doing? Elizabeth said

Inspecting the property. Jennis said

For what? Jack said

To confirm it's value. Jennis said

Why do you care about the value? Jack owns the land. Elizabeth said

No, the bank owns the land. Jack has a loan to purchase it. Jennis said

Which I pay every month. Jack said

The bank appreciates that. Nevertheless, we'll be exercising our right to take back the land. Jennis said

What right? Elizabeth said

This land was purchased with a demand loan. That authorizes the bank to recall the loan at any time, with seven days notice Jennis said

Why would you take it back if I'm paying on time? Jack said

We have a business to run, and how we run it is none of your concern. Jennis said

The bank has a cash offer for the land. His bank needs cash. Isn't that right, ? Elizabeth said

It's all perfectly legal, I assure you. Constable Thorsten signed the loan documents, and the clause was clearly stated in it. Here. Read it. Section 14-d. Jennis said

I don't care what your documents say. We'll fight you. Elizabeth said

Well, you can try, of course, but the law is on our side. However... there's still an option for you to keep the land. Jennis said

Which is? Elizabeth said

Pay off the remaining balance within seven days. The bank will release the title to you. Jennis said

I don't have that kind of money. Jack said

Perhaps your wife could help. I understand your family's very wealthy. Jennis said

We're not borrowing from Elizabeth's family. This is our land and our fight. Jack said

Have it your way. Seven days, constable, or you forfeit the land. Jennis said

The next day at Elizabeth's and jack house

(Sighs) it's not fair. Elizabeth said

But Jennis is right. The bank can take our land. I don't know what to do. Jack said

I could contact my father. Elizabeth said

No. No, I'd rather lose the land then go to your father. Jack said

Jack. Elizabeth said

he was concerned- - that I couldn't provide for you. A few days into your marriage, I'm not gonna prove him right. Jack said

You wouldn't be proving him right. He would just be lending us the money and then we would pay him back. Elizabeth said

I'm not gonna that. But I promise you this- - I will build you a house. It may not be on that land but we'll have a house. We're a family. We're gonna see this through as one. Jack said

Meanwhile at the cafe (footsteps)

I have a blueberry scone fresh from the oven. Abigail said

My favorite. Frank said

That's the idea. What are you working on? Abigail said

My Sunday sermon. Frank said

Oh. Well, be prepared for a packed church. We missed your service while you were away. Abigail said

Oh, no pressure. Frank said

(Laughs) what do you have so far? Abigail said

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves." Frank said

That's one of my favorite verses. Abigail said

I want this week's sermon to be about taking care of those who need help the most. Frank said

Well, volunteering at the children's hospital, it's pretty obvious you live by those words. Abigail said

Honestly, I... I feel like I haven't done enough. Frank said

Frank... your humility is an inspiration to us all. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the school

All right, everyone, these are your vocabulary words for the week. Why don't you write them all down in your notebooks? For homework, I want you to define each word, and then use each word in a sentence. Yes opal? Elizabeth said

Those look hard! Opal said

Well, yes, they are difficult, but that's how we learn, and you can use your dictionary to help you. Philip? Would you like to move closer? Elizabeth said

I'm okay. Philip said

Please move up. You can move back as soon as you finish writing down the words. Is that any better? Elizabeth said

Not really. It's still a little blurry. I can't tell what the third word is. "Sur..."S-Sur...prise? Philip said

Actually, it's "support". How long have you been having trouble reading the board? Elizabeth said

A few days. Philip said

Then I think a trip to see Dr. Sean is in order. Is your father still out of town? Elizabeth said

I'm still staying with Mrs Drayman's. Philip said

In that case, I will take you, today after school. Elizabeth said

But am I sick? Philip said

I don't think so. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Afternoon, Abigail. Martin said

Martin. Abigail said

I'll, uh, take a score to go. Martin said

Is everything okay? You look like someone who's about to deliver a death sentence. Abigail said

Well, not a death sentence, but not exactly a reprieve, either. You remember that I told you that it'd be hard to find an investor for the bank. Martin said

The one in Lost Hills? Abigail said

No. Not interested. Martin said

How about Richgrove? Abigail said

Nope. (Sighs heavily) No, I have another card up my sleeve, but, uh... it's a long shot. Martin said

Well, at this point, I'll take any shot. Abigail said

All right. Thank you. Mrs. Blakeley. Martin said

Mr. Gowen. Florence said

Florence. Abigail said

I've heard the rumors. It's true, isn't it? Florence said

What do you mean? Abigail said

You've put our financial future in the hands of a convicted felon. Someone who stole from us! Florence said

Florence... come with me. I'm trying to keep our bank afloat. Abigail said

It's not working. What are we gonna do? (Choking up) we can't keep living this way. Florence said

We're not giving up. Abigail said

What does that mean? That's not gonna stop us from losing everything, Abigail. Florence said

That is the only thing that will stop it. Florence, we've been through hard times, but we've stuck together. We found a way, and we'll do it again. Abigail said

I'm sorry. Florence said

Meanwhile outside of the jail house on the street

Even seen this note or coat? No? Okay. Thank you. Take that. Come on. Let's go back inside. Sorry. I tried. Bill said

Is that all Chief Forensic Investigators do? Ask around? Laurel said

No, when it's a serious crime, we dig deep, but we're talking about a coat here. Bill said

This could be important to somebody. Laurel said

I'm sure it's not. Bill said

How can you be sure? Laurel?

Well, because it's not a deed, and it's not a will, and it's not a treasure map. It's just a little note. (Huffs irately Laurel) Wait a minute. Bring that back to me. And take the coat off. The first thing we know is that... it wasn't mailed, it was handed to her, because it's not signed. Whoever gave the note or got the note had dirty hands. Bill said

Is that important? Laurel said

You never know with clues. Couldn't you have just gotten a different coat? Bill said

You looking for more clues? Laurel said

That's what Chief Forensic Investigators do. Bill said

You look like Sherlock Holmes. Laurel said

Except Sherlock Holmes is make-believe. I'm the real deal. Bill said

What's that? Laurel said

We're looking for someone with red hair. Bill said

Next-door down at the infirmary

Okay, can you read this line for me? Carlson said

S-C-U-T-I-J? Philip said

Perfect! Carlson said

Well done, Philip! Elizabeth said

Now, Cover your other eye and let's read the some line. Carlson said

T...O...V...P...I...T? Philip said

Ah. I think we know what's going on here, young man. Carlson said

We do? Philip said

Yes. You need glasses. Let's try these ones. There you go. Okay. Now... Try and read that exact same line, right there. Carlson said

S-C-U-T-I-J. Philip said

Great. And the line right underneath? Carlson said

T-H-L-S-D-A. Philip said

Look at that. I think we have a match! Carlson said

But I don't want to wear glasses. Philip said

Your eyesight is fine to see things close up. You only need these to see things that are far away. Carlson said

Exactly. Like the chalkboard, or when you're standing in the outfield, playing baseball. Elizabeth said

So I won't miss any more fly balls? Philip said

(Laughs) probably not. As long as you're wearing your glasses. Elizabeth said

The next day at mercantile

This is so sweet, but I've never owned that coat before. Molly said

The sheriff found a red hair on it. Laurel said

But it's not mine. And this is appears to be written to someone named... is it Lucy? Molly said

Did you ever know anyone named Lucy or Livvy, or anyone with that name? Bill said

Doesn't ring a bell. I'm sorry. Molly said

Thank you. Bill said

Now what? Laurel said

We keep looking for clues. Come on. Bill said

Meanwhile at the cafe

You must be glad to have Frank back. Elizabeth said

Sometimes, you don't know how much you miss someone until they come home. Abigail said

Mm. We've all missed his presence in town. Elizabeth said

I'm not sure he's all here. Abigail said

What do you mean? Elizabeth said

He won't say it, but I know how much those children and his work mean to him. Abigail said

And I know how much you mean to him. Elizabeth said

I know a part of him wants to be here, but... only a part of him. Abigail said

For now... he's here. Elizabeth said

You're right, and for that I should be grateful. Abigail said

Mm-hmm. Elizabeth said

Where is jack? Oh, wait. Let me guess. Up at that land getting ready to build that big, beautiful house of yours. Abigail said

About that... Elizabeth said

What is it? Abigail said

Mr. Jennis... Elizabeth said

Oh, no. What has he done now? Abigail said

He's taking Jack's land back. Elizabeth said

What? Abigail

He has a cash buyer for it. Elizabeth said

But he can't do that. He has an agreement with Jack! Abigail said

Well, we looked at the loan document, and he can. Elizabeth said

What are you gonna do? Abigail said

We're going to survive. For better or for worse. Elizabeth said

A little late at the school

Morning. Hi! Elizabeth said

Hey! When did you get glasses? Corey said

Yesterday. But I don't have to wear them all the time. Philip said

But when you do, you'll have four eyes. Robert said

They kind of look funny on you. Corey said

All right, children, that's enough. We don't make fun of our friends, we support them. Which is a word you should be familiar with, since it's one of our vocabulary words this week. (Children laughing) Corey, Robert- - you'll be staying in at recess today. If either of you had to wear glasses, would it feel good to be teased? Elizabeth said

No. Corey, Robert said

I want you both to apologize to Philip. Elizabeth said

Sorry. Corey, Robert said

I think you look very handsome in your glasses. Elizabeth said

I like your glasses, too. Opal said

Thanks, opal. Philip said

Meanwhile at the county house

Good morning, sweetheart. Lee said

Good morning. Rosemary said

Whatcha reading there? Lee said

Oh, just a history book. Yellowed pages of bygone days. Not really relevant anymore. Rosemary said

Breakfast is a little cold. Lee said

Yes. It's terrible when things go cold. Isn't it? Rosemary said

It is... but how did it get ice-cold? Lee said

Yes. How? Rosemary said

Um, you know, I think I'm just gonna get a scone and a coffee at Abigail's. Lee said

If you must. Rosemary said

Mm... I don't supposed you packed ma a lunch, then, either? Lee said

Well, you never notice what I pack in your lunch anyway. Rosemary said

That's not true. You made me that delicious hot soup the other day. Lee said

Lunch isn't always about food... Lee. Rosemary said

Right. Okay, well, I will, uh, see you at dinnertime, then. Lee said

Sometime later at school

I have to say, I am very impressed with your scores on these tests. It's clear you all studied very hard. And since you all did so well, I'm going to give you an extra five minutes at recess today! Class dismissed. Elizabeth said

Don't you want to come play baseball? Opal said

Now that you have glasses, you'll be able to catch the ball. Emily said

I don't feel too good. I think I'll stay inside. Philip said

Philip, have you been crying again? Elizabeth said

No. Philip said

Are you sure? Elizabeth said

I promise. But my head has been hurting, and my eyes hurt, too. Philip said

Well, sometimes that can happen when you start wearing glasses. Elizabeth said

But they're helping me see better. Philip said

I know, and I'm very proud of you for wearing them, but your lenses might be a bit too strong. I'll take you back to see Dr. Sean today after school, okay? Elizabeth said

Okay. Philip said

And in the meantime I'll get you a cold towel to help with your headache. Elizabeth said

Thank you, mrs Thorsten. Philip said

Meanwhile in town outside the café

Mr. Jennis. Abigail said

Mrs. Stanton. Jennis said

You're calling in Jack's loan? Abigail said

It's all perfectly legal. Jennis said

(Scoffs) there's what's legal and what's right, and that's not right. Abigail said

There's a buyer for that land in Bakersfield, and the bank needs cash. Jennis said

Your bank needs me. I'm trying to find investors to keep you afloat. Abigail said

As are we. Jennis said

Well, until that happens, let's be honorable and not underhanded. Abigail said

I'll take that under consideration, but I make no promises. Jennis said

Make this go away, mr. Jennis. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the infirmary

Do these headaches only come on when you're wearing your glasses? Carlson said

Nope. I get them a lot, even when I don't have the glasses on. Philip said

Philip... why didn't you tell us that sooner? Elizabeth said

I didn't want anyone to be mad at me. Philip said

Oh. Sweetheart, we could never be mad about you not feeling well. Elizabeth said

And is your vision still a little blurry, even when you're wearing your glasses? Carlson said

Sometimes. Philip said

Okay. We're gonna try something totally different. Keep looking at me and tell me, how many fingers am I holding up? Carlson said

I-I can't really see your hand there. Philip said

Okay. How how many here? Carlson said

Two. Philip said

Excellent. And on this side? Carlson said

I can't really see your hand there, either. Philip said

Okay. You hang tight here, buddy. Okay? We'll be right back. Carlson said

Carlson...what's going on? Elizabeth said

This is a lot more serious than I first thought. I think Philip has glaucoma. Carlson said

What's that? Elizabeth said

It's an eye disease that damages the optic nerve in the brain. Build up fluid in the eye, puts pressure on the nerve, and causes the eyes to water. Carlson said

Oh, so that's why Philip looked like he was crying. Elizabeth said

Yeah, and glaucoma also blurs the peripheral vision, which is why he couldn't see my hand on the side. Carlson said

Oh, no. Is he gonna be all right? Elizabeth said

Without the proper treatment, he could lose his eyesight. Carlson said

Carlson... we can't let that happen. Elizabeth said

Of course not. But I'm not an ophthalmologist. Philip needs to see a specialist at the Children's hospital right away. Carlson said

I'll send a telegram to his father. He's been working outside of Santa Clarita for the past few months. He should know. Elizabeth said

A little later at the café

So you're saying glaucoma is treatable? Abigail said

So Philip won't go blind? Frank said

His eyesight can be saved, but he's going to need surgery right away. It's a very delicate procedure that needs to be performed by an ophthalmologist. Carlson said

Frank, you must know someone at children's hospital. Abigail said

Can you help us? Elizabeth said

I do know the administrators. Maybe if I explain the situation, they can find Philip a bed. I'll go send a telegram right now. Frank said

I really appreciate it, Frank. Carlson said

I'll be right back. Frank said

I'll go with you. Carlson said

It would be devastating if Philip went blind. Elizabeth said

Elizabeth, don't you worry. Frank will move heaven and Earth for Philip to get the help he needs. Abigail said

That night at the county house (engine shuts off)

Hi, sweetheart. Lee said

Hello. Rosemary said

Listen... I know that you've been feeling a little blue lately, so... I have a surprise for you. Lee said

You do? Rosemary said

Mm-hmm. Lee said

What? Rosemary said

Come here. Lee said

Oh, Lee. You didn't have to go to all this trouble. Rosemary said

Oh, I think maybe I did. And there's more. Open it. Lee said

I know what it says, Lee. I wrote it. Rosemary said

Open it. It's the original Broadway cast. Lee said

Gilbert and Sullivan's "pirates of Penzance" and the New York Touring Company. Rosemary said

You are the love of my life, Rosemary. Lee said

Oh! Lee! Rosemary said

A toast. To married life. Lee said

To being Married to you. Rosemary said

The next day at the cafe

You see that little smudge down there? I think it might be coal dust. Bill said

That does look like it. Abigail said

I know your husband was a supervisor in the old mine. I just thought you might have some idea. Bill said

I don't recognize the coat. Abigail said

We think the person might have red hair, but we've already asked Mrs. Sullivan. Laurel said

You recognize the name Livvy or Lucy? Bill said

No. I'm sorry. Abigail said

Thanks anyway, Mrs. Stanton. Laurel said

Good luck. Wait! The name on the note it's not Lucy or Livvy. It's "Lovey". Abigail said

Lovey? Bill said

It was a nickname, and she's not the one with red hair. It was her husband. Abigail said

Several minutes later out on the sidewalk out at the saloon

Florence! Hold on a second! Bill said

Oh! Laurel! Oh, my old coat looks good on you. Florence said

We found this note in the lining of the coat. Laurel said

"Lovey...Your constant laughter fills my heart. Never lose the joy you find in everything around you." (gasps) (fearfully) Oh! I... I was sixteen when Paul gave this to me! My childhood sweetheart. My husband. You know, I had forgotten what he was in me... How I used to be... Florence said

It was all her. Bill said

Thank you so much for this. It means the world to me. I will treasure it. Florence said

Thank you for the coat. Laurel said

Oh, you're so welcome. Thank you. Florence said

You're welcome. Well done! Bill said

(As Bill glanced at the sheriff officer Saw and officer saluting another one as he rode out of town. And jack seemed sad as he walked past on his way home.)

At jack and Elizabeth house

Jack. What's the matter? Elizabeth said

I've been... (sighing) I've been given an assignment at tuolumne. Jack said

You're leaving again? Elizabeth said

Only for two months. It's to train others Mountie, it's considered a prestigious assignment, an honor, actually. Jack said

I thought we were done with that. Elizabeth said

And we almost are, I promise you. Jack said

Jack, I've been worrying about you for so long- - Elizabeth said

This is different. There's no danger. The worst that can happen is I lose my voice yelling at the new recruits. Jack said

I don't see you as much of a yeller. Elizabeth said

More like a stern lecturer. The thing is, we can't go to Chicago right now. Jack said

Then I'll go with you. Elizabeth said

To tuolumne? Jack said

Mm-hmm. Elizabeth said

(Sighing) you can't leave Valley Springfor two months. Jack said

I can for as long as it takes us to get to tuolumne and back. We'll consider it our honeymoon. I hear it's beautiful country. Elizabeth said

It's beautiful... intelligent, and understanding. Now, how'd I get so lucky? Jack said

They say each of us is born under a star. Ours aren't just lucky... they're charged. Elizabeth said

The next day

Don't worry. The doctors are gonna take good care of you once you get there. And Pastor Frank's gonna make sure you get there safely. Okay? Thank you, Frank. Carlson said

I don't want you to worry about a thing. Elizabeth said

You told my dad where I'm going? Philip said

I did. He'll be waiting for you in Santa Clarita, and we'll see you back here before you know it. Elizabeth said

Promise? Philip said

I promise. Elizabeth said

I'll miss you. Philip said

I will miss you, too. Elizabeth said

We're sorry we teased you, Philip. We didn't mean anything by it. Robert said

That's okay. Philip said

This is for you. It's from the whole class. Laurel drew the picture. Corey said

And we all signed it. Opal said

It's really nice. Thanks. Philip said

Goodbye Philip. Anna said

See you soon. Opal said

Get well. Corey said

We're gonna miss you. Robert said

Abigail... I need to talk to you about something. Frank said

I know what you have to do. Abigail said

You do? Frank said

You have to stay there, Frank. Your devotion to those children, it's your calling. Abigail said

Yeah. It really is. Frank said

You're a good man, Frank. Abigail said

Coming from you that means a lot. I wish I could ask you to go with me. Frank said

I wish I could ask you to stay. Abigail said

You take care, Corey. Frank said

When will you be back? Corey said

Well, I'm not really sure... But I'll write to you. Will you write me back? You keep listening to your mom. You'll be all right. Frank said

"As soon as the stage and left every buddy scampi didn't different directions Elizabeth went towards the Mercantile"

What do you think about camping at diamond lake? Jack said

I love it. Maybe we can catch trout for dinner. Elizabeth said

Well, maybe, but just to be safe, I packed som tins of pork and beans. Jack said
(Both laughing)

Jack... Elizabeth. Jennis said

Mr. Jennis, we don't have your money. Jack said

That's not why I'm here. As a matter of fact, I'm happy to tell you the bank will not be taking over your property. Jennis said

Well, we're grateful, of course, but what's changed? Elizabeth said

Well, you just keep up the payments and the land will be all yours soon enough. Jennis said

What do you think happened? Jack said

I have an idea. Abigail Stanton... did you say something to Mr. Jennis? Elizabeth said

Oh, I might have had a little talk with him. Abigail said

I'm guessing it wasn't a very friendly one. Jack said

Well, sometimes, people just need to be reminded how we treat each other here in valley spring . Abigail said

We are very lucky to have you as mayor. Elizabeth and Jack said

Well, given our financial situation, I don't know that everyone would agree with you right now. Abigail said

And they'd be wrong. Jack said

Thank you, Abigail. Elizabeth said

You're the best, Abigail. Jack said

Well, you two, go. Enjoy your honeymoon. Abigail said

Abigail. I've got some good news. I found a possible investor for the bank. She's gonna come to town in two week. Martin said

Oh. Thank you, Martin. Abigail said

Now, I've convinced her to come and have a look at the place, but you're gonna have to sell her on the idea of investing. Martin said

Two weeks later

Elizabeth's Journal
Jack and I had the most glorious honeymoon on the way to tuolumne. We had picnics by otsego Lake and romantic dinners at quaint restaurants. I cherished every moment. I only left jack a short time ago, and I miss him already. He'll be gone for two months, but he's training Mounties, not fighting, so I don't have the same concerns as when he left for the Northern Territories. Still... I anxiously await the day he returns and we'll be together again.

Here she comes! Rosemary said

(Rosemary's voice broke my thumb as we came into town Elizabeth though)

Here she is! Rosemary said

Welcome back! Lee said

Thank you, lee. Elizabeth said

You're welcome. Lee said

Oh! We've missed you. How was your honeymoon? Abigail said

It couldn't have been better. Elizabeth said

Ah! Who needs Chicago? Rosemary said

It was really just the two of us, finding our way. Elizabeth said

Oh, it sounds so romantic. Abigail said

Oh! How did everything go at school? Elizabeth said

(deeply relieved sigh from Florence)

Ohh! Elizabeth said

Welcome back. Florence said

Oh... okay. Elizabeth said

Uh, Mrs. Stanton? May I have a word? Jennis said

Of course, mr. Jennis said

Now, what did I miss? Elizabeth said

The children missed you so much. Florence said

I missed them , too. Elizabeth said

What is it? Abigail said

Well, I wanted to inform you that, with a little luck, in a few days, the bank should be reopening. Jennis said

Oh, well, we're not certain that Mr. Gowen's investor is going to come through. Abigail said

No, it's someone else I've lined up. His Name's Jaber Jaap. Very wealthy. Jennis said

Oh, well, that's wonderful news. Is this for certain? Abigail said

No, but we're in negotiations. He's coming by later this afternoon. He wants to meet you. Jennis said

Absolutely. Please, bring him by my office. Abigail said

Excellent. Jennis said

Sometime later that morning at school

(Crunching) I wish my mom would pack me something to snack on besides apples. Robert said

My mom says as the bank opens again, we won't have to make do anymore. Corey said

Good morning, everyone! Elizabeth said

Good morning! The students said

It's so nice to be back. I missed all of you. Elizabeth said

I missed you, too, miss thatcher. (Gasps playfully) I mean, mrs. Thorsten. Opal said

(Laughs) it's okay. I know my new name might take a little while to get used to. Elizabeth said

We all missed you. Holly said

Yeah. Mrs. Blakeley yells a lot. Robert said

And why, I wonder, did mrs. Blakeley find it necessary to raise her voice while I was away? Elizabeth said

I was good. Opal said

Robert! You know better than to eat during class time. Please save that for recess. Elizabeth said

I'll just throw it away. Robert said

You shouldn't waste food when the Mercantile's shelves are practically empty. Emily said

But they still have candy. Opal said

Mr. Yost says candy is a luxury, and you can't buy it on credit. Robert said

It's been a difficult time for everyone, but hopefully, the bank will be reopening soon, and I heard that two different people might invest money in it. Elizabeth said

What do you mean, "invest"? Opal said

Well, that's a business term that means putting money into something in order to get more money back. Elizabeth said

My mom says the bank's in trouble because they did a bad job of that. Corey said

Do all business invest? Emily said

In one way or another. Maybe we should learn how businesses work. Elizabeth said

Yeah! The students said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

Hey. Hey, this isn't a flophouse. I'm warning you. Get up, or I'll lock you in here for good. I said- - Bill said

Never sneak up on a sleeping woman. Cara said

Cara Olivia. I wondered if I'd see you again. What're you gonna do with that? Bill said

Take it. I'm turning myself in. Cara said

After a year on the run, you decide to turn yourself in? Bill said

Well, it's not easy being a fugitive, always looking over your shoulder. Cara said

Why'd you come here? You could've surrendered to any lawman. Bill said

Well, I suppose, but you were the one who arrested me. Call me loyal. Cara said

I'd call you a lot of things, but loyal isn't one of them. Bill said

(Chuckles) come on, Bill. Thought you'd be happy to see me. Cara said

I'm always happy when a fugitive faces justice. Bill said

Is that the only reason you're glad I'm here? Cara said

The only. Bill said

Oh, come on! Don't be like that. I tried to contact you. It's true! In fact... (sighs) I was near Valley Springonce and I almost come to see you, but I didn't know how you'd react. Bill said

Meanwhile at the saloon

So this class project is about showing my students how real businesses work. There'd be at least one student assigned to every participating business, matched up by student interest, and it's only for one day. Elizabeth said

I'll do it. Dottie said

Well, I can't wait to teach a clever child how to design high fashion. And how it helps the town's economy, of course. Rosemary said

That's the spirit. Uh, who else will participate? Elizabeth said

Lee will. Rosemary said

I will? (Stammers) I mean, yes. Of course, I will. I just- - I'm not so sure your kids are gonna find what I do very interesting. Lee said

Nonsense! You're the town's biggest employer. You. Lee county, are fascinating. Rosemary said

(Laughs) (clears his throat and coughs) Excuse me. You can count me in, of course. Ned said

Great. Thank you. Carlson? Elizabeth said

Of course. I'm there anything else we need to know? Carlson said

Not really. Just go about your average day and let the students watch what you do. Please sign this if you're willing to participate. Elizabeth said

Yep. Rosemary said

Why don't you just sign me up? Lee said

Mm-hmm. Rosemary said

Okay lee said

Meanwhile at the cafe (door opens)

Hey. I need a meal for a prisoner. Bill said

Oh, sure. I'll pour you some soup. Abigail said

Uh, what's the special today? Bill said

It's gonna be meatloaf, but it won't be ready for a few hours. Abigail said

Oh. Bill said

Is it for the prisoner? Abigail said

Why? Bill said

Because you've never requested my special for a prisoner. Abigail said

Just pour me the soup. Bill said

who's been arrested? Abigail said

Cara Olivia. Bill said

Ah-hah. Abigail said

Ah-hah. What does that mean? Bill said

I'll pour you a little extra. Abigail said

Just the normal amount is fine, thank you. Whatever you're thinking, Abigail, it's just in you head. Bill said

Whatever you say. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the school after recess

Each one of these businesses has agreed to let at least one of you spend the day with them, to see how they operate. Isn't that exciting? Elizabeth said

Yeah! The kids said

Now, who is interested in what? Yes, Robert? Elizabeth said
Elizabeth

I want dr. Sean! Robert said

Oh. Very good. - "Robert." (chalk scraping board) Yes, Emily? Elizabeth said

Could I go to the dress shop? I want to because a designer when I grow up. Emily said

Then that's the place for you. Now, county Lumber is one of the most important companies in the whole town. Who is interested in spending tomorrow with mr. County? Elizabeth said

I am! Corey said

Great! Corey. Yes, Opal. Elizabeth said

I want the mercantile! Opal said

Of course. Elizabeth said

They have lots of candy there. Opal said

Yes, Holly? Elizabeth said

Ice cream shop, please. Holly said

Clever girl. Elizabeth said

Oh! Should've said ice cream shop. Opal said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

The soup is delicious! Cara said

Yes, it is. Bill said

Come on, bill. I know you're mad at me, but why can't we just talk? Cara said

I'm not mad, and no. Bill said

This is just silly. I mean we're both eating lunch. Why can't we eat together? Cara said

Because you're on that side and I'm not. Besides, what's there to talk about? Bill said

You know exactly what there is to talk about. Cara said

Want to talk? Talk. Bill said

What happened between us... Cara said

I arrested you, you escaped, that's all there was. Bill said

Well, you... you left out a part. Big part. We kissed. Cara said

I think you kissed me. Bill said

I think I recall that you enjoyed it. Why can't you just admit it? Bill that kiss meant something to both of us. Cara said

What do you think it means? Bill said

It meant that, if circumstances were different, we could have been different. Cara said

Well, they're not, and we're not. Bill said

But it's not too late. Why do you think I turned myself in? I just want to put this behind me, and... and start fresh. Cara said

I don't know about you, but I've had enough. Bill said

Meanwhile at the Mayor office

I'm of the opinion that there is no better investment than a small town with real growth potential. Jaber Jaap said

I'm happy to hear that. Abigail said

I'm not one for false modesty, so I'll just lay it out. I've got a fantastic track record when it comes to picking which towns to invest in. Jaber Jaap said

How do you choose? Abigail said

It's not by looking into a crystal ball. I look at a map and I ask myself, "Can this town become the hub for all the other towns around it? Jaber Jaap said

This town can definitely be that. Jennis said

But it all comes down to the people and their desire for something more. Jaber Jaap said

Well, you won't find a better group of hard-working citizens than here in valley spring . Abigail said

Let me ask you this, madame mayor- - do you consider yourself pro-growth? Jaber Jaap said

Oh, I fought to bring a railway depot here. I certainly want my town to prosper. Abigail said

If I become majority stakeholders in the bank, I want to make sure we're partners in promoting new businesses and growth. Jaber Jaap said

Uh... what kind of businesses and growth are you talking about? Abigail said

Well, whatever helps this town prosper. Jaber Jaap said

Uh, I can assure you that we are all for growth and sound investments. Jennis said

The next day On Main Street

All right. Now, remember to listen and observe, but don't get in the way, and I will be checking in on you. Elizabeth said

Can we go now? Corey said

Yes! Elizabeth said (cheering continues)

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

Just got a wire saying I'm supposed to escort you to Santa Clarita day after tomorrow. Would you stop that pacing. It's annoying! Bill said

I'm sorry. I'm not used to being cooped up in a jail cell. Cara said

(Door opens)

Good morning, bill. Abigail said

Morning. Bill said

Heading to my office. Thought I'd drop off breakfast. Good morning, Cara. Abigail said

Oh, good morning, mrs. Stanton. Cara said

It's Mayor Stanton now. Bill said

Oh! Wow. I've never had a mayor cook for me before. Thank you, it's been delicious. Cara said

You're welcome. Abigail said

You didn't have to do this. Bill said

Oh, it's no bother. Abigail said

So how did the meeting with the investor go yesterday? Bill said

(Sighs) Well... to be honest, I don't have a good feeling. Abigail said

Why's that? Bill said

There's something about him I don't trust. Abigail said

Really? What's this guy's name? Bill said

Jaber Jaap. Abigail said

Jaber Jaap? Cara said

You have ears like a bat. Bill said

A single woman needs to develop every one of her senses. Cara

Especially when they're a fugitive. Bill said

Cara, do you know this Jaber Jaap? Abigail said

Well, I can't say for sure, but his name kind of rings a bell. Cara said

Maybe if she saw him, it would jog her memory. Abigail said

What? No! I'm not letting her out of my sight. Bill said

All you have to do is take a look at him, then you might remember how you've heard that name. Abigail said

Abigail, I don't think this is a good idea at all! Bill said

Do you have a better one? Abigail said

Well, what's in it for me? Cara said

How about you're lucky to- - Bill said

Bill. What would it take for you to help us? Abigail said

Meanwhile at the County office (door opens)

So? What do you think? Lee said

What do you do with all the lumber? Corey said

Well, we stack it, we dry it, and bundle it. Lee said

How much do you sell it for? Corey said

Well, that depends on what we sell and where we sell it. And then when it's ready, we put it on a railcar, and before you know it, the customer gets their order. Which reminds me. Hickman, are we on schedule to get that order to port Los Angeles? Lee said

It'll be on the train by 5:00. Hickman said

Excellent. Lee said

I see you have a sidekick today. Hickman said

Yes, Mrs Thorsten's class project. Young Corey'll be learning the ropes with us today. Isn't that right? Lee said

I want be an important business one day. Corey said

Well, you're learning from the best. Hickman said

All right, what do we got here? Uh... actually, you know, I was just about to order lunch. Are you, uh, supposed to be having lunch with your friends, or...? Lee said

Shouldn't I have lunch with you? I mean, lunch is part of your day, right? Corey said

Yeah. Sometimes, it's the best part of my day. All right, then. Let's do lunch! Lee said

Meanwhile outside on the city streets just outside of the saloon

Well, between the two potential investors, there's a good chance one of them will come through. Elizabeth said

I have my reservations about who Mr. Jennis brought in. But we'll see about the other. Abigail said

I know you want all this to be over, Abigail. We all do, but you are doing an amazing job keeping the town calm. Elizabeth said

Thank you. That looks like her now. Wish me luck. Abigail said

She has a chauffeur. I'd say you're already in luck. Elizabeth said

Elizabeth, that Emily is such a doll. Dottie said

Isn't she? Elizabeth said

Yes.( Dottie continues indistinctly)

Mrs. Powell? Abigail said

Oh, that's me, darling. Gladys said

Abigail Stanton, Mayor of Valley spring . Abigail said

Well, hello. What a quick little place you have here. Gladys said

Quaint, and so much more. Abigail said

Is that Elizabeth Letcher? Gladys said

Well, yes. Actually, it's Elizabeth Thorsten now. Abigail said

Oh. Excuse me. Elizabeth! Gladys said

Excuse me. I can't believe it! Mrs. Powell! Elizabeth said

Elizabeth! I here you're a married lady now. I always knew you'd be quite the catch. Gladys said

How do you two know each other? Abigail said

From Hamilton. My sister and I grew up with your son Duncan. Mrs. Powell is a friend of the family. Elizabeth said

Well, you're not a little girl anymore, Elizabeth, call me Gladys. Gladys said

I see you've already made some acquaintances, Grant. Martin said

Well, yes. Now and old. We were practically neighbors. Gladys said

Oh, that's right. You and Mrs. Thorsten are both from Hamilton. Martin said

Elizabeth and my son went to the same school. She would come over and help him with his homework. I paid her with cookies. Gladys said

(All laughing)

Elizabeth is out teacher here. Abigail said

Well, of course. Perfect. Gladys said

Well, shall we, ladies? Martin said

Yes. Abigail said

We'll talk soon. Elizabeth said

Yes. Gladys said

I think luck is definitely on your side now. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the infirmary

I want to be a doctor when I grow up. Robert said

Good! Well, study really hard. Carlson said

When's something going to happen? Robert said

Oh, Mr. Lawson's coming by in a couple hours to have some stitches removed. Faith said

Two hours? Robert said

Robert, we count it a good thing when there's no medical emergencies in town. Carlson said

Doctors make a lot of money, right? Robert said

Some do, yep. Some don't. Carlson said

How much do you charge? Robert said

Well, that all depends on what I do, and what they can pay. Carlson said

Nobody gets turned away. Sometimes, we don't charge them anything at all. Faith said

You work for free? Robert said

Occasionally, yeah. Carlson said

No wonder this town is broke. Robert said

Come along, young man. You can help me fold towels. Faith said

What does folding towels have to do with being a doctor? Robert said

You'd be surprised. Faith said

Meanwhile at the office of the mayor

Abigail and I have made an arrangement for you to meet with some of the merchants after our meeting. Martin said

God. I want to see every nook and cranny of Valley spring . I need to be convinced that there's real growth potential here. Gladys said

I think you will be. Abigail said

Martin has already filled me in on the history and statistics and little secrets. Gladys said

I wasn't aware that Valley Spring had any little secrets. Abigail said

Oh darling every town has its little secrets. Gladys said

Well, we believe in full disclosure here, which is why I need to be... honest with you. Abigail said

Oh. Sounds ominous. Gladys said

There's another investor in town looking into finding the bank. Abigail said

You didn't tell me this, Martin. Gladys said

Because I wasn't aware at the time. Martin said

I hope you're not using me as a ploy to entice this other investor. Gladys said

I don't do things like that. Abigail said

Because I am nobody's bargaining chip, and I can I assure you I will ride off into the sunset, if I get even get a whiff of that. Gladys said

You won't. Martin said

What's this other investor's name? Gladys said

Jaber Jaap. Abigail said

Never heard of him. Does he know I'm here? Gladys said.

I don't think he does. Abigail said

Well, tell him. (Clears her throat) I what everything on the up and up. And if I run into him, I will definitely introduce myself. I can let myself out. Good day, Mayor. Gladys said

(Door opens and shuts)

So where is this Jaap from? Martin said

I don't know. He says he invests in towns all over the country's. Apparently he's in the market for another one and we might fit the bill. Abigail said

You seem, uh... wary of him. Martin said

Not wary as much as cautious. Abigail said

Well, the goal here is to have valley spring bank be flush again, so two investors gives us two opportunities to do just that. Martin said

Let's hope. Abigail said

Meanwhile at Dottie's dress shop

To become exceptional dress designer, you need to have an eye for fashion, which means, you need to be able to blend color, and fabric, and style to make one perfect outfit. Rosemary said

I can do that. Emily said

Wonderful! Now, here... is one item of clothing, a white silk scarf... to start you off. Now, I want you to show me how are you would build an ensemble based on this scarf... well I hang some dresses on the back rack. You can use anything in the shop. Rosemary said

Okay! I'm done! Emily said

Already? Okay. Let me see. (gasps, breath catching) Oh... okay. (Chuckles) so the color scheme really works... sort of. Pinstripe and plaid... we may need a small lesson on patterns. Rosemary said

Meanwhile at the county office

What do you usually do in the afternoon? Corey said

Mm. Well, to be honest with you, it's not very interesting. Once I know everything is running smoothly at the mill, I, uh, I come back here and I do paperwork. Lee said

What's paperwork? Corey said

Well, I go over the ledgers, and make sure everything checks out. You know, credits, debits, that sort of thing. Yeah. Yeah, you're right, it's pretty boring. You know... your, uh, your school hour is just about up. You don't have to stick around here, if you don't want to. Lee said

I want to stay. Corey said

But don't you- - and your friends usually play baseball after school? Lee said

I can do that anytime. I want to learn about the... um... Corey said

The ledgers?. Lee said

Right. The ledgers. Corey said

(Laughs) Really? You want to learn and that the ledgers. Lee said

A-ha Corey said

Okay. Bring it on over here. You know what? It's really not all that complicated. Thank of it as... credits, debits- - money in, money out. Right? Money in- - good, we like that. Money out- - bad, we don't like that. So, here. You good at math? Lee said

Yes. Corey said

Okay. Lee said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

We haven't got all day! Bill said

Just a moment! You cannot rush beauty, Bill. Come on out, Cara Dottie said

Well? Cara said

Well, I think- - this is fine. Bill said

"Fine"? She looks absolutely stunning! Dottie said

Thank to you. So... what do you think? Cara said

Well ... I think we should get going. Bill said

I don't know why I bother. Dottie said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

And people can move about the store and choose the items that they need, and then when a customer is ready to pay, I ring them up, using this register. Any questions? Ned said

What are those? Opal said

Uh...those are pickled eggs. Ned said

They taste like pickles? Opal said

Yes. They're very tasty. Would you like to try one? Yes? All right. Now, I pickle these myself... and I am very proud of the recipe. There you are. Do you like it? Ned said

It's delicious! Opal said

It's good, isn't it? Ned said

Meanwhile outside of the saloon.

Now remember, we wait in the saloon. When Jaap come in, you take a good look at him to see if you recognize him, then we walk out. Got it? Bill said

Got it. Cara said

You're sure? Bill said

Easy as pie! Martin Gowen? Cara said

Miss Olivia. Martin said

Now is not the time, Cara. Bill said

I think now is the time. Look at you. A free man. Unbelievable. Cara said

I could say the same about you, which does beg the question- - what is she doing out on the streets, Bill? Martin said

Oh, that's a charming question coming from a man who conspired with the people who tried to kill me. Cara said

I did my time, which is something that you'll get a feel for soon enough, should our sheriff decide to do his job. Martin said

This isn't your business, Martin. It doesn't concern you. Bill said

You testified against me, bill. Now I see you're talking a stroll down the boardwalk with my co-conspirator. Martin said

No, no, no. You and me are not the same. Cara said

Actually speak volumes, Miss Olivia. Keep a close eye on her, bill. Make sure she doesn't get away from you again. Martin said

Meanwhile at infirmary

Ahh... Robert said

(Door opens) Doc? John said

What happened, John? Carlson said

Ah, a board bucked going through the saw at the mill. Got a sliver I can't get rid of. John said

Let's take a look at it. Carlson said

Oh! Finally. Robert said

Oh, do you mind if Robert stays in the room? It's part of his class project. Faith said

Sure, yeah, John said

Oh yeah. It's wedged in there pretty deep. Carlson said

This... is what we use to sterilize the area, so the wound doesn't get infected. Faith said

Could you grab me the forceps, please? Carlson said

Forceps. Faith said

Okay. Tch. This might hurt a little bit, John. Uh wait. Are you- - Carlson said

Oh! Faith said

Meanwhile at outside

Now, you must see our beautiful church. Florence said

It is so charming. It's just over there. Molly said

Getting to know valley spring ? Elizabeth said

Oh! Yes. These ladies have been giving me the grand tour. Where are you headed? Gladys said

Oh, I'm just checking on some of my students. Elizabeth said

Ah. Well, I'll walk with you. Gladys said

Oh, we haven't shown you the railroad depot yet! Molly said

It is brand-new. Florence said

I saw it on the way in. Quaint. Well, thank you very much for the tour. Gladys said

Oh, our pleasure. Molly said

You have a lovely day. Florence said

And if there's anything else you need, you know where to find us. Molly said

Well, the people here are quite enthusiastic about this town. Gladys said

Because it truly is such a special place. Did you meet some of the merchants yet? Elizabeth said

I did. They are quite friendly. I stopped by the saloon, as well. It's a little rough around the edges, but it serves its purpose, and some delicious libations as well. Gladys said

(Both chuckling) well, I don't know much about investments, but I do know people, and you won't find any better than here in Valley spring . Elizabeth said

Mm. Elizabeth... Are you trying to turn our social visit into a business one? Gladys said

I just think it's important that you to get to know the town. Elizabeth said

Understand. But my business day is done. Let's talk about you. Gladys said

Oh! Well... Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the infirmary (Groans groggily)

What happened Robert said

You just got a little woozy. Carlson said

Oh, right. Robert said

Here, drink this apple juice. Faith said

Does it have to be Apple? Robert said

Drink. It's good for you. Faith said

I'm sorry. Robert said

Ah, happens to the best of us. When I was in med school, we'd take bets who would pass out first during hospital rounds. My first few weeks there I was even odds. Carlson said

You? Robert said

Yeah. When I was your age, just the sight of blood would make me woozy. Carlson said

And you still because a doctor? Robert said

Yeah, and so could you, if you really want it, if you don't give up. Carlson said

Thanks. Robert said

So, now... you feeling better? Carlson said

Yeah. Robert said

Good. That'll be $2.00 Carlson said

What? Robert said

For my medical services. Carlson said

Um... I don't have any money. Robert said

Oh. What do you think, doctor? Should we call the sheriff? Have him arrested? Faith said

I think... we should do this one free of charge. Don't you think? Carlson said
Absolutely. Robert said

Meanwhile at the saloon

Why did you let Gowen come back to valley spring ? Cara said

I didn't have much say in the matter. Bill said

Doesn't sound like the Bill Avenue I remember. Seemed to me you were used to getting your own way. Cara said

Well, not this time. Abigail believes people can change. Bill said

Mm. And you don't? Cara said

I suppose you're gonna tell me that you're a new person now. Bill said

Well, it sounds like, if I did, you wouldn't believe me. Cara said

You're probably right. Bill said

And you'd be wrong. Cara said

Maybe Jaap's out for the day. Bill said

Listen, all I want is a normal life again, with good people in a good town. Cara said

Then for your sake, I hope you find that. There he is. You recognize him? Bill said

Hmm. I think I might need a closer look. Cara said

Hey, hey- - Bill said

Hello. You're new around here, aren't you? Cara said

Why, yes, I am. Jaber Jaap said

I know everybody here in Valley Spring and I don't recognize you. Cara said

Maybe we can remedy that. Jaber Jaap said

No. I don't sit with a man who doesn't stand few a lady. Cara said

Pardon me, ma'am. May I? Please. Jaber Jaap said

Thank you. Cara said

Meanwhile at outside

I remember you always wanted to be a teacher and a writer. Gladys said

So far, I've only accomplished the one. Elizabeth said

Well, don't give up. I recall you were quite good. Gladys said

Thanks. Elizabeth said

It is quite something to see... the woman that you've grown into. Gladys said

Oh. Elizabeth said

And I hear your wedding was quite the affair. Gladys said

Oh, ho! So I guess Florence and Molly did more than just show you the sights. Elizabeth said

Oh, those two ladies can spin a tale. Sorry, oh, no! It was quite entertaining. I don't know what's more extraordinary, the hero Mountie, or your- - your father coming around. Gladys said

(Laughs Elizabeth)

I'd say, by the blushing bride, it's the Mountie. Gladys said

And you would be right. But enough about me, how have you been? Elizabeth said

Well, most of my time is spent in business meetings or on the road, traveling to other businesses meetings. Gladys said

How's Duncan? Elizabeth said

I'm sure he's fine. Gladys said

Well, that doesn't sound very convincing. Elizabeth said

My son and I haven't spoken in a number of years. Gladys said

I'm so sorry. I had no idea. May I ask what happened? Elizabeth said

It's not important. Well, I better go. I need to rest up, I have a big day tomorrow. Gladys said

I Hope I didn't say anything wrong. Elizabeth said

No, darling. I'm just feeling a little tired. And I think it might be time to have another gander around the saloon. Gladys said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

Hello? Elizabeth said

Hello! May I help you? Opal said

(Laughs) Opel... oh, maybe later. Elizabeth said (Laughs)

Meanwhile at the saloon (laughs)

And then I fired him. Jaber Jaap said

Oh... well. This has been delightful. Cara said

Allow me. Mademoiselle... Jaber Jaap said

Meanwhile outside of the saloon

Well? Bill said

Oh, I recognized him right when he walked in the door. Cara said

Why did you sit at his table? Bill said

I wanted to see the look on your face. Cara said

Tell me about jaap. Bill said

That night at the café

A few months ago, I passed through this small Texas town Odessa, and Jaap ran the bank. Cara said

Tell her what kind of town it is. Bill said

Well, there was lots of gambling and, well, it's not a family town if you know what I mean. Nothing like valley spring . Cara said

Kind of place where the sheriff and the mayor are happy to look the other way. Bill said

Were they being paid off? Abigail said

Well, I can't say for sure, but it looked like he controlled the whole town. Cara said

(Exhales) We need to more information on mr. Jaap. Abigail said

I have a friend that's a Texas Ranger. I'm gonna wire him to him to make sure her story checks out. Bill said

The next day at school

All right, everyone. Today, we're going to discuss what we learned about business. Emily? Elizabeth said

I learned there are rules to being creative. It's best that- - you know them before you break them. Emily said

(Laughs) Okay! Excellent point. Yes, Opal? Elizabeth said

I like eggs. Opal said

Wonderful, sweetheart. Robert? Elizabeth said

I learned that doctors don't always make a lot of money. Sometimes, they don't charge because it's the right thing to do. Elizabeth said

Well, if you're lucky enough to have a doctor like Carlson Sean. Has anyone seen Corey? Elizabeth said

(footsteps) (door opens) uh, everyone, please open up your readers and start reading from pages ten. Elizabeth said

So, look who I found at the sawmill this morning. Lee said

Corey... you know our project was only for one day. Why did you go there? Elizabeth said

So that I could spend another day with mr. County. Corey said

Well, is there a reason why you wanted to do that? Elizabeth said

I don't know. It was fun spending time with him. Corey said

Oh, well, that's nice! Lee said

Well, Corey, Mr. county has work and you have school, so why don't you take a seat and open up your reader? Elizabeth said

Okay. Bye, Nr. County. Corey said

Bey, Corey. (Hushed) He stayed late yesterday so I could teach him how to sign paychecks. I don't know. His friends were playing outside. He didn't care. Lee said

I suspect this is about more than just signing some checks. Elizabeth said

Yeah, I suspect so. But that's all right, I get it. My father was a traveling salesmen. He was home maybe three times a month. He sold carpets-sweepers. Very boring. I had to pretend to be interested, just so I could spend a little more time with him. But why am I telling you because you already know this cousin. Lee said

(Laughs) Well, thanks for bringing him back. Elizabeth said

Yeah, it's okay. No problem. Bye, Elizabeth. Lee said

Bye. Elizabeth said

That afternoon outside the saloon

Gladys ! How are you doing? Elizabeth said

Elizabeth. Well, I spent the morning reviewing the bank's books. Gladys said

What did you find? Elizabeth said

Well, numbers don't lie, darling, and... it's not pretty. Mr. Jennis... he's made some very bad loans. Gladys said

(groans in dread Elizabeth)

But there are opportunities for growth here in valley spring . Gladys said

And have you made a decision? Elizabeth said

Not yet. I still have a few books to review. I'm pretty thorough. Gladys said

You know, Gladys, I can't help thinking about you and Duncan. You two used to be so close. Elizabeth said

Well... Ahem. Things change. Gladys said

But between mother and son, things shouldn't change like that. Elizabeth said

I really must go. Gladys said

Just a head up near the café Abigail was sweeping.

How's your reunion going with Mrs. Powell? Abigail said

Well, it was going well, until I found out she hasn't spoken to her son in years. Elizabeth said

Oh. I'm sorry to hear that. Abigail said

Me too. When we were young, Duncan was one of my best friends. I just wish there was something I could do. Elizabeth said

I wonder what happened. Abigail said

I'm not sure. I know their family was never the same after Duncan's father died. Elizabeth said

It never is. Abigail said

You know, there's anything boy I was hoping to talk to you about- - Corey. He didn't show up for school this morning. Instead, he went back to Lee's mill. Now, Lee brought him back to school, but it was clear that Corey wanted to spend more time with him. Elizabeth said

I think Corey's at an age where he needs a man in his life. Abigail said (Door opening)

I'll leave you two alone. Elizabeth said

How are you doing, Corey? Abigail said

I'm okay. Corey said

I hear you didn't go to school this morning. Abigail said

I was learning a lot at the mill. Corey said

I bet you were, but you do know, you have to go to school. Abigail said

I know. Corey said

Corey... I fell terrible that I've been spending all this time on the bank stuff. Abigail said

I understand. It's important stuff. Corey said

It is, but not more important than you. I love you, Corey. Abigail said

I love you, too mom. Corey said

Hey, how about this weekend, you and I go to your favorite fishing spot? Abigail said

Sure. Corey said

(Knocking at door)

I'll get it. Corey said

Hi, Mr. county! Corey said

Hey, Corey. Hi, Abigail. Lee said

Lee! I was hoping- - that Corey could help me with something today. Lee said

What's that? Corey said

I was thinking we could play some catch. Lee said

Really? Corey said

Well, the mill has a team, and we have this big game next month, and, uh, well, the truth is, I'm a little rusty, but I heard you're fantastic. So I was thinking maybe you could show me a few things. Lee said

Could I ever! I mean... May I? Corey said

Yes, you may. (Whispers) Thank you. Abigail said

(Quietly) you're welcome. Come on, young man. Let's go! Lee said

(Footsteps) Bill. What did you find out? Abigail said (closing the café door)

Everything Cara said checks out. Jaap. Has a history of taking small towns and turning them into something we don't want. Bill. said

We need to warn Jennis. Abigail said

(As they came up on the bank) oh, no. Mr. Jennis. Abigail said

I have wonderful news, Mayor Stanton. Mr. Jaap has agreed to take a majority share in the bank. Jennis said

We're gonna do great things with town. Mr. Jaap said

The night on the Radia (stars book mouse 62 my heart)

as a titled I really says You were all talk about marriages then and what we have now I know in my phone family my grandmother was a widow at age forty-nine that's my age but she never remarried literally age ninety today is just a different time I wish they we I wished that there were some of the same worlds they had back then keep up the great work at of the town's radio station. Dames said

That the talking about monogamous relationships Melissa said

One last review we have. Great radio program as always from Sarah Princess 93 I LOVE she wrote that in capital letters Listening to this radio program you all bring so much insight into the town, you're so much fun to listen to you I love listen while commuting to my job where I'm a preschool teacher I'm always inspired by the way Elizabeth cares for her students thank you for all the time work and hearts throughout she wrote in capital letters you put into this. Dames said

Thank you. Melissa, Dames said

Your a preschool teacher. Dames said

That's great amazing I mean praise to all the teacher in world. Melissa said

Yes I out to my cousin Brooke who who is a teacher she teaches a grade school and she is west back in Ohio I she's a good teacher. Dames said

I have four cousins they're all grade school teacher apparently I did not go into that profession but applaud to them also my dad's a teacher too. I didn't go into education but I do appreciate it. Melissa said

Yes we appreciate. Dames said

Festers, Teachers education it's super important. Thank you everyone so yeah keep reading. Please we will show you love back. Let's get into Abigail and then bank so we Jaap like we talked about but for someone get more into Gladys coming from Hamilton what were your thoughts on Gladys first of all. Melissa said

Another person from Hamilton. I wasn't sure about her at first I was i kept looking at her and conveying kind of strong Woman who's here to actually vet the town and but also she had had underlining sadness which we find out about later she went when she saw Elizabeth she knew her from before was happy to see her like she couldn't be a loving warm person but she also seemed a little cold and distant. Dames said

Yeah she seemed like someone who is been wronged by a lot of people like she's had a lot of heartbreak in her life or someone has you know really messed her over maybe in situations when it comes to business or people have done and done wrong and sure you can tell there she's definitely tainted. A little bit not not terribly tainted but she's very very wary and I can I'll give her that and but I loved the fact that she was so straightforward and honest upfront you know not using me as a ploy to help entice this other investor not a bargaining chip and I love how she's said her standards like I'm here to do one thing. The fact that she knows Elizabeth and she got to know people a more personal level with everybody in the town compared to Jaap who didn't Jaber Jaap he came in what were your thoughts 💭 of Jaap. Melissa said

Again I'm always leery when a new male comes to town. Dames said

You know me I don't already trust men in general. Here's another guy sorry I already checked out Melissa said

But no I uh yeah I never trust the whole run away and but i'm always leery of them because this is our town I'm like I read you know the jury still is is still out I was like not I just think there's something off about him I agree somethings wrong. Dames said

Right and I I don't want to bring gender issues into this also but we see the town get messed over it's all the men. Melissa said

All of us man oh you're bad. Dames said

Gowen, wade barrett, we had Ryan Wainwright and now we have Jaber Jaap there are men. Melissa said

We should run the world winning for all women should just run the world. Dames said

I like Gladys so much more she so more more more honest than Jaap because we know he has ulterior motives then we find out the backstory from thankfully Cara of all people is also a woman who is been wronged by the men in this town and finding out more back story I'm Jaap He gets owner and clean and claiming basically the town and controlling the towns this is just another one he's is like a parasite why must we go with a man. Melissa said

That's the way man were like that that's how they are. Dames said

But you know what for like universal themes Of this town of this book and a pawn is show go with the women there for for once. Melissa said

Yeah ya know the woman are there I I'm all for the women of taking charge you saying that we need a woman that's a villain you're right it's a yeah I don't think Gladys or Cara isn't either so you need an outsourced as a regular villain that Alexis Carrington Colby for what for the town and any dicey fun know that reference. Dames said

Gladys obviously the better choice but we see at the end of the chapter that Jennis already he messed with the town too and he and the finances and he already made a deal with Jaap. Melissa said

Right there shaking hands and Bill and Abigail are running up to and it's like too late. Dames said

Is anything on paper handshake is a handshake but on on paper if it's legal lysed notarized who knows I think but Abigail should have some pole to overrule this. Melissa said

I think it's a great cliffhanger oh they're shaking hands OK and and that was that. Dames said

So let's get into predictions. Melissa said

I don't really have one you're usually crazy really good. Dames sait

I think because we had hints of Gladys dropping the whole information thing that she's not in touch with her son Duncan anymore I Think Elizabeth is going to help remedy that I think she's help reconcile because she's she knows Dunkin on a personal level she hasn't talked to him but but Elizabeth knows that Gladys is actually upset about this so Elizabeth being the good person that she is I think she's actually gonna take the initiative to help reconcile this relationship. That's all I have. Melissa said
