The next morning at school

Who felt the morning chill today? Well, I have a new class assignment for everyone. We're all going to be learning about weather. I'm going to assign you in groups of two, and each team will be giving a presentation based on a different aspect of weather. For example, Corey and Anna, you will be giving a presentation on clouds. Next, we have Holly and Robert. Your presentation will be on rain. Harper and Emily, your assignment will be wind. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the Mayor office

Now, you may not like Jaber Jaap- - mr. Jennis said

I don't know him personally. What I don't like are the business he promotes. It would be bad for hope valley. Abigail said

If he had done something illegal in those other towns that you're talking about, he'd be under arrest. Mr. Jennis said

One of the reason he isn't is because he controls the sheriff and the Mayor in those towns. Abigail said

You don't know that for a fact. Now, my bank's facing a total collapse without Jaap money. We have a deal. Mr. Jennis said

Nothing is binding until the papers are signed. Abigail said

The papers are being drawn up as we speak. Mr. Jennis said

Meaning we still have time. Abigail said

Time? For what? Mr Jennis said

For me to convince Gladys Powell to step up and take Jaap's place. Her reputation is impeccable. If I can convince her to at least match the same deal you made with jaap- - Abigail said

"If" May be a small word, but it can do an awful lot of harm. Mr. Jennis said

All I'm asking you to do is slow down the paperwork. Tell Japp your lawyer's need to look it over. Abigail said

But they don't. It's a very straightforward contract. Mr. Jennis said

That may be, but it'll buy us some time. And if japp is truly committed, he won't mind a small delay. It's like you've said before, you've been a good citizen in this town for many years. Don't leave the future of Valley Spring in the hands of jaap. Abigail said

All right. I'll stall him for a couple of days, but that's it. Mr. Jennis said

Oh. Thank you. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the infirmary (Door opens)

Rhonda! Carlson said

Hi, Carlson. Rhonda said

Oh! What a nice surprise! Carlson said

Maria Told me you were here. Rhonda said

How are your parents? Carlson said

Father is a little crustier, if you can believe it. Rhonda said

(Laughs) And your mom, is she still gardening? Carlson said

Uh, no. She stopped when Victoria died I miss my sister... every day. Rhonda said

Yeah. I miss her, too. Carlson said

Is it true that, afterwards, you kept your wedding ring on? Rhonda said

For over two years. Carlson said

That was sweet. I was happy to hear that you went back to practicing medicine. Rhonda said

It took me a while, but I finally made my way back. Carlson said

Well, this town's lucky to have you. Rhonda said

Oh, I think I'm the lucky one. Carlson said

I wish I could say the same for myself. Rhonda said

Something tells me you're not just here for a social visit. Carlson said

I'm not. I'm here... because I'm dying. I have tumor. Rhonda said

Where? Carlson said

In my brain. Some doctor think this sort of thing is hereditary. Rhonda said

I know. No one in my family knows. Rhonda said

Why not? Carlson said

The thought of losing two daughters would be too much for my parents. Rhonda said

Well, what about Maria? Carlson said

My sister would feel obligated to tell them. Promise me you won't contact them about this? Rhonda said

Yes will not. Who diagnosed you? And when? Carlson said

My hometown doctor in Brookfield. He know something wasn't right when... I kept getting these horrible headaches. He found it right here. They say this will kill me. Rhonda said

Over time. We don't know how long. Carlson said

But I heard it can be removed. Rhonda said

I already tried, with Abra. Carlson said

But sometimes, the operation works, right? Rhonda said

It's experimental. Not many doctors perform it, and those that do are very unsuccessful. Carlson said

My doctor in Brookfield isn't one of those specialists. He can't do the surgery. Which is why I came to you. Rhonda said

Rhonda... I'm sorry. I already tried it once. You don't want me. But if you really want to do this surgery, I will find you the right doctor. Carlson said

You know someone? Rhonda said

Yes. Dr. Jason Edward, in Santa Clarita. But are you sure? Most people don't survive this operation. Carlson said

I'm willing to take that risk. Rhonda said

I'll wire Dr. Edward right now. Carlson said

Thank you... Carlson. Rhonda said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

Oh. I'm glad I caught you before you left. Abigail said

Just about done packing. Bill said

Oh, I was talking to Olivia. Olivia I really appreciate you giving us an idea of what we might expect jaber. Abigail said

Oh, well, I'm Happy I could've helped. Um, I was hoping that maybe you could do something for me. Olivia said

What's that? Abigail said

Could you return this to Dottie? It's only been worn once, and I'm sure she could still sell it. Olivia said

Well, that's our gift to you. Abigail said

(Laughing) Oh. No, where I'm going I won't need a dress. It felt good to wear it for a few hours. Please? Olivia said

Of course. Good luck, Olivia. Abigail said

Thank you. Olivia said

What did Jennis say about putting off the deal? Bill said

He's given me two days to convince Gladys to take Jaap's place. Abigail said

You want me to stay? I can delay her transfer. Bill said

No, there's nothing you can do. We're getting an investor. The only question is which one. Abigail said

Sometime later the door to the saloon opens

Mrs Powell. Abigail said

Madame mayor. Martin. Gladys said

May we join you? Abigail said

Of course, but I don't recommends the coffee. Somehow, it is both burnt and cold. Gladys said

(Chuckling) Thank you, Martin. We wanted to talk to you about the bank. Abigail said

There has been a... Little Development. Martin said

In my experience when people say that a development is "little," It rarely is. Gladys said

Well Jennis has agreed to terms with jaber jaap. Martin said

Without even giving me the time a day? Gladys said

The paperwork hasn't been signed. I asked Jennis to delay it so you would have time to make an offer. Abigail said

I told you both specifically then I would be used as a bargaining chip. Gladys said

And you're not. Abigail said

You didn't even bother to hear whether I was interested before making an agreement with this other fella. Gladys said

Unfortunately, Jennis made the deal without me knowing. Abigail said

You know what I just heard? You have no influence over in the bank. You're just an observer stuck on the sidelines. And I'm the sap who wasted her time. Gladys said

Please Mrs. Powell, I wouldn't have convinced Jennis to delay the paperwork if I didn't think you were the better choice. Abigail said

Well I have no doubt that I am the better choice... but I have two rules, and as a woman working in a man's world, i'm sure you will understand I don't get overlooked, and I don't play for second place. Good luck. For your sake, I hope that Jennis finally has made it a smart move but I doubt it. Gladys said

(As Gladys moves out of her seat and up the stairs up the saloon to the hotel)

what is it? Abigail said

You know, when I was mayor of this town, jaber jaap would've been a perfect partner for me. But when I was taking this town down a different road. Martin said

But you're A changed man, Martin. Abigail said

Well, be that as it may, what do you want to do now? Martin said

"Meanwhile outside on a country Roads on horseback."

Hope you don't mind getting wet looks like it's gonna rain. Bill said

Ah, it won't last long, but it will be heavy. Olivia said

Well, not that heavy. (torrent crashing down) We'll hide out over here! Make sure you tie your horses down. Bill said

Meanwhile back inValley Spring at the school house(class murmuring industriously)

Look at this! There's a drawing of a machine that takes window measurements. We could build one. Emily said

Miss is Thorsten didn't say anything about having to build stuff. Harper said

Well, we'll get a better grade if we do more than she asked. Emily said

It looks pretty complicated. Harper said

We can do it. Emily said

Maybe you can. You're so much smarter than I am. Harper said

No, I'm not. Emily said

Yeah, you are. That's why you and Holly always get the best marks in science. Found in the in thing would be a good idea but only if it's done right. Harper said

I'll do it, but you can write up how on how wind is made. It's easy to explain it just has to do with warm air rising and cooler air rushing and you take it's place. Emily said

Meanwhile back out of town (rain hammering tarp)

So, have you ever been married? Olivia said

None of your business. Bill said

Oh, come on! Just trying to make conversation. We already talked about the weather. It's wet. Olivia said

I was married once, a long time ago. Bill said

How'd you mess it up? Olivia said

Why do you think I messed it up? Bill said

Just a wild guess. Olivia said

Well, you'd be wrong. Rain's stopped. Where's your horse? Bill said

Uh... I don't know. It must've gotten spooked by lightning. Olivia said

I told you to tie him down! Bill said

I did. Olivia said

Oh, you did? Really? Bill said

Yeah, but we still have one horse! Olivia said

And two riders. Bill said

Yeah, so we ride together. Olivia said

Did you do this on purpose? Bill said

Oh... get over yourself. (Hooves Clopping) Just like old times. Olivia said

What "old times" would those be? Bill said

You don't remember? When we shared a horse the last time, you were taking me to jail. Olivia said

You do realize trips down memory lane usually don't include stories of incarnation. Bill said

You've got to admit, it was an adventure. Olivia said

That it was. Bill said

Hey, um... you don't suppose you would consider putting in a good word for me with the judge? Olivia said

Is that why you're buttering me up? Bill said

How am I buttering you up? Olivia said

You're trying to make me feel that there's something real between us, Olivia, but it's not gonna work. Bill said

Well, I feel that- - Olivia said

Let me make this clear. I'm the sheriff you're the fugitive. I'm taking you to jail, and there's nothing- - I repeat, nothing- - else between us. Got it? Bill said

Got it. Olivia said

(Horse cries out) (irately): Ahh! Bill said

What's wrong? Olivia said

Probably got a stone caught in his shoe. Hop off for a minute. Yeah, just like I thought. Bill said

Bill! Olivia said (rattling)

Watch out! (Hissing) oh! (Whinnying) (snake hissing) the horse! Bill

No! You can't catch him. You'll die trying. What do we do now? Olivia said

Without anti-venom, I've got about a day before my heart stops. We got no horse. We got no way of getting help. Bill said

Give it to me. (Spits) Olivia said

Meanwhile back in Valley spring at school (door opens)

Emily, what are you still doing here? Elizabeth said

I need to finish talking wind measurements for our presentation tomorrow. Emily said

Well, where's Harper? Shouldn't he be helping you? Elizabeth said

It's okay. I said I would do it. Emily said

Then I will wait with you. We can walk home together. Elizabeth said

Thanks, mrs Thorsten. Emily said

You're welcome. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile back out of town as night begins to set in

How are you feeling? Olivia said

A little shaky. Bill said

There must be something else we can do. Olivia said

The old-timers used to say put charcoal in the wound and it sucks the poison out. That May be worth a try. Bill said

Okay. Olivia said

No, no, no, no. Not like that! Bill said

How? Olivia said

You gotta crust it and mix it with water, make a paste. Bill said

Meanwhile back in Spring Valley at the café

No, I'm not giving up. Abigail said

Of course not. You never do. Elizabeth said

I have to find a way to get through to Gladys. Abigail said

Well, once she feels slighted, she doesn't forgive. Elizabeth said

What do you mean? Abigail said

Well, I wired my friend, Duncan, in Hamilton, to let him know that his mother was here. He wired back and said that she never forgave him for something he said to her years ago. He's reached out several times and she just doesn't respond. Elizabeth said

Gladys is one tough lady. Abigail said

Mm-hmm. Elizabeth said

I'm sure- -... she's spent her whole career fighting to be respected. Abigail said

I guess that can harden a person. Elizabeth said

People learn to become hard... but sometimes, they can remember how not to be. (As Abigail was takes food out to one of the tables) Here you go, Carlson. Abigail said

Thanks Abigail. This is my sister-in-law. This is Rhonda. Carlson said

Oh, it's nice to meet you. How long are you in town for? Abigail said

Uh, we'll see. I need an operation. Rhonda said

Oh. Well, I hope everything will be okay. Abigail said

Thank you. Rhonda said

We're just waiting to hear back from a specialist. Carlson said

When do you think you might hear from dr. Edward? Rhonda said

Soon. I told him it was very urgent. Carlson said

I'm sure Carlson will do everything he can. Abigail said

I don't know what I'd do without him. Rhonda said

Well, the whole town feels that way about him. You let me know if I can get you anything else. Abigail said

Thank you, Abigail. All right. Enjoy. You remind me of Virginia. Carlson said

What do you mean? Rhonda said

How you cut your chicken, and the way you bend your wrists, and your index finger points down towards the plate. Carlson said

I think she taught me how to hold a knife and fork before I could walk. Rhonda said

Virginia was the definition of elegance and grace, with a great sense of humor to boot. Carlson said

You two were a great couple. I know it was especially hard on you when she died. Rhonda said

It was hard on all of us. Carlson said

Just so you know... I never blamed you at all. Rhonda said

Yeah, I always wonder if had i been a better surgeon, maybe... maybe Virginia would still be alive now. Carlson said

Don't think that way. Rhonda said

I do. Which is why I only want the very best for you. Carlson said

Meanwhile back out of town

The charcoal's not working. Olivia said

Well, you bought me some time. At first light tomorrow morning, we'll walk out of here. Bill said

Shh. You're in no shape to walk. Olivia said

Huh. So you really do care. Bill said

Yeah... I really do. Don't ask me why. You're about as friendly to me as that rattlesnake. Olivia said

No, you'll catch cold. Bill said

Well, don't worry about me. You're burning up. Olivia said

I've never met anyone like you... bill said

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Olivia said

Mostly good, I think. Bill said

That's probably the fever talking. Olivia said

(weak chuckle) probably. Because I'm still talking you to stand trial. Bill said

Yeah? Well at the moment, you're not talking anybody anywhere. Olivia said

(breath shaking) thanks. Thanks for staying with me. Bill said

You're welcome. Try to get some sleep. Olivia said

The next morning in Valley spring at the school
(Dear jack, I am writing you early today. Class hasn't started yet. Soon the hustle and bustle of the day will sweep morning into night, and that's a very good thing, because it means I'll be back in your arms one day sooner. I miss hearing your voice, your laughter... I miss everything about you. But I know this is only temporary. I so look forward to the day you return. Until then, your loving wife, Elizabeth said (sighs deeply)

Meanwhile at the café

Good morning, Mr. Jaap. Abigail said

You don't look happy to see me. Jaber said

I'm always happy to have customers. Abigail said

Why do I get the sense that I'm the exception to that rule? But since you the only cafe in town, here I am. Jaber said

Huh. The saloon serves pork and beans. Abigail said

Is that what that was? Ah, I was afraid to ask. Jaber said

What I can get you? Abigail said

Egg's, scrabbled with bacon. Jaber said

Coming right up. Abigail said

I'd also like an explanation. Jaber said

About what? Abigail said

I think Jennis is deliberately holding up the paperwork on our deal. My hunch is, the delay is your doing. Jaber said

(Chuckles) Is you're asking me if I would prefer someone else to invest in the bank, the answer is yes. Abigail said

You're talking about Gladys Powell? Jaber said

I'm taking about anyone who wouldn't change the basic charts of this town. Abigail said

Nothing ever stays the same, Mrs. Sutton. If they're lucky towns become cities, cities become metropolises. It's called progress. Jaber said

(Scoffs lightly) you and I have a very different view on what progress is, mr. Jaap. Abigail said

I told mr. Jennis that if he didn't have the paperwork for me to sign by 4:00 today, I'm canceling my offer. Do you know what he did? He folded like a house of cards. Now... if I could get those eggs. Jaber said

At a nearby table

That's just awful, Carlson. First, your wife, and now your sister-in-law. Rosemary said

I've known Rhonda since she was six, and she was always that little kid running around with a smile on her face. She was the flower girl at our wedding. Carlson said

Hmm. Rosemary said

How successful is this type of surgery? Lee said

Not very. Most die on the table, like Virginia. Carlson said

Oh, dear. Rosemary said

Guess, uh, Rhonda doesn't have a lot of great opinions, does she? Lee said

I remember watching Virginia. It wasn't easy. Carlson said

No, of course not. Rosemary said

I gave her false hope. She died, thinking that— that I would save her. Carlson said

No. Rosemary said

You tried your best. Lee said

My best wasn't good enough. Well, I should get to the infirmary. I've got some appointments this morning. Carlson said

Of course. Lee said

Glad I found you. This just come for you. Ned said

Thank you, Ned. Carlson said

Is that from dr. Edward? Lee said

(Sighing) yes. Carlson said

Meanwhile at the school

Harper and I did our project on wind. Emily

Yup. Harper said

Wind is air that's movie. It's made when the sun heats the earth's surface different in one part than in another, because there are so many different kinds of land and water formations. Emily said

Oh. And what makes wind move? Elizabeth said

When warm air- - Emily said

Oh, I'm sorry, Emily. I was actually asking Harper. Elizabeth said ... it's when warm air um... rises. Harper said

And cooler air fills in the space it left. When the high air pressure hits the low air pressure, the wind blows. Emily said

That's it. Harper said

And can you tell us- - how wind is measured? Elizabeth said

Sure. I'll show the class what I- - uh, What we made. Emily said

Harper, do you want to tell us what that is. Elizabeth said

S-Sure. It's a un ... I'm sorry, mrs Thorsten, I forget. Harper said

It's called an anemometer. Emily said

That's right. Harper said

Thank you, Emily. Elizabeth said

A little later down at the infirmary. (Door opens) Rhonda, I'm so sorry. Dr. Edward feels the surgery's too risky, and he isn't willing to think a chance. Carlson said

Wouldn't I be the one talking it? Rhonda said

Doctors take a different view sometimes. But trust me, I made the best care possible for you. I-I told him you were young and otherwise healthy. But you have to understand, brain surgery is very experimental. Carlson said

Is there no one else we can ask? Rhonda said

Dr. Edward is the best. I can reach out to others- - Carlson said

The longer I wait, the worse it'll get, right? Rhonda said

Yes. That's true. Carlson said

Then you have to do it. Right away. Rhonda said

Rhonda, I already explained to you why I can't. Carlson said

Carlson, please. Rhonda said

When I operated on your sister, I was working on a hospital, performing surgery every day. I'm a country doctor now. Not a brain surgeon. Carlson said

I have faith in you. Rhonda said

As a doctor, it's my duty to weigh the risks, and there is a dozen things that can go wrong here. Carlson said

So you're weighing what might go wrong against my life? Rhonda said

I'm weighing the possibility of you living for six months, twelve months... against dying on an operating table. Carlson said

I want the chance at a long life, Carlson... and you're my last hope. Rhonda said

Sometime not later

Look like you're carrying the weight of the world. Faith said

It feels that way, a little bit. If Rhonda doesn't have this surgery, she's gonna die. There's no way around it. Carlson said

And she wants you to do it? Faith said

Yes. She's run out of all other options, so I can understand why she asked. Carlson said

What did you tell her? Faith said

I told her I'd think about it. Carlson said

Looks like you're not doing much else. Faith said

I can't do this surgery, faith! A good surgeon has to be completely confident in his skills, and when it comes to this operation, I'm not! Carlson said

Stop! I have worked with plenty of other doctors, and none of them are as good as you. You saved Corey's life when he would've died in the hands of another doctor. I witnessed the focus and skill that it took. Faith said

When I prepare for a surgery, I go over every step in my mind, visualizing... and when I try and do that for Rhonda, all I see is my wife lying there. I can't lose her sister the same way I lost her. Carlson said

But what's if your experience with your wife actually helped you save her sister? Wouldn't that be something? Faith said

Meanwhile at the school ( class cowbell rings)

Don't forget your weather projects. I'm sure your parents would love to see them. Harper? Emily? I'd like to speak with you, please. Working in a team is a partnership. You work together so that you can accomplish more together than you could apart. Letting Emily do everything and taking the credit is almost as bad as telling a lie, isn't it, Harper? Elizabeth said

Yes. Harper said

So why did you do it? Elizabeth said

I'm no good at science. Harper said

That's not true! But even if it were, by letting Emily do everything, you denied yourself the opportunity to learn. And Emily, I know you really cared about this project, but you weren't doing Harper any favors, now, we're you? Elizabeth said

I guess not. I just wanted a good grade. Emily said

I know you did, but some things are more important than grades. Now, Harper , I'm sorry to say it, but I'm going to have to give you an incomplete on this assignment which means you'll have to do it over again, but I believe in you, and part of job is to make sure you believe in yourself, so when you turn in this project, that'll be a good start. Elizabeth said

Okay... but I'm not sure where to begin. Harper said

Well, I have some books you can take home with you, and hopefully, they'll spark some ideas. Elizabeth said

If you want, I could help you a little. I mean, if that's all right? Emily said

A little. Elizabeth said

Really? You want to help me, after what I did? Harper said

I'm not going to do all the work for you, but I can show you where to start. Emily said

Okay. Thanks. Harper said

A little later at the saloon

Hello, mother. Duncan said

Duncan. What are you doing here? Gladys said

I wired him, Gladys. Elizabeth said

Can I ask why? Gladys said

I know I said some things that hurt you. Duncan said

Hurt? You said I was a terrible mother, that I wasn't there for you. Gladys said

I'm sorry. Duncan said

When your father died- - ...I had to go to work to put food on the table, and send you to school, and it was all on me! I couldn't be a regular mother... there for you every day when you come home. Gladys said

I know. I've sent you so many written apologies... but you never reply. Why? Duncan said

Well, there are some things that you just can't take back. Gladys said

I disagree, mrs. Powell. You weather the storm with family. I lost my older son, Peter, and there were times when we disagreed, spoke harshly...but do you think those times matter one bit now? Abigail said

I am very sorry for the loss of your son... but I really wish that you people would stop sticking your nose in other people's business. Gladys said

But I grew up with you. I consider you friends. But, Gladys, you have to be willing to forgive, if not in business, then at least in your personal life. Elizabeth said

Because, without forgiveness, you've got nothing. Abigail said

I have to go. Gladys said

Wait! Before you leave, I want to introduce you to some people. This is my wife Judith... Duncan said

Hello. Judith said

Hello. Gladys said

And your grandchildren. They want to meet you. Duncan said

Are you my grandma? Elliot said

Hello. Gladys said

This is Elliot. Duncan said

"Elliot." Now, that is a fine name. Did you know that that was your grandfather's name? Gladys said

And this... is Helen Duncan said

You gave her my middle name? I really must go. Gladys said

Don't go, grandma! Elliot said

I don't know what to say. Gladys said

You don't have to say a thing, mom. Duncan said

Meanwhile back out of town (Pained gasping and panting)

Bill! There he is! Okay, how are you feeling? Olivia said

Never better. Bill said

Okay, I found a doctor. He has anti-venom. Why did you leave the camp? We've been looking everywhere for you! You're gonna be all right. Okay, here it comes, the anti-venom. Olivia said

Hurry up. Doc! Bill said

Meanwhile at outside the saloon

Rhonda! Are you okay? Faith said

They water them now house. Rhonda said

Excuse me? Faith said

Um... Rhonda said

Carlson! Come here! Faith said

What's going on? Carlson said

Oh! Faith said

Come, come, come. Sit, sit. Carlson said

Careful! Faith said

Whoa, whoa. Carlson said

Carlson...Rhonda said

What happened? Lee said

It's okay. Don't speak. Don't speak. The tumor's putting pressure on your brain. Carlson said

Can you help her? Lee said

She needs surgery. Carlson said

Who's going to do it? Faith said

Me. I need some supplies from Bakersfield hospital. Can you get them for me? Carlson said

Yeah, I have a truck on it's way to Bakersfield right now! I-I can wire ahead, get the driver to pick up whatever you need, and come back right away. Lee said

I need chloroform and carbolic acid. Carlson said

chloroform, carbolic acid- - got it! Lee said

I need you to monitor her heart while I do this. Carlson said

Of course. Faith said

Meanwhile at the bank

Everything looks to be in order and ready to sign. Together, we're going to do great things for this town. Jaber Jaap said

Pardon the interruption, gentlemen. Mr. Jennis, we had a deal. You gave me until tomorrow to see if mrs. Powell would agree to buy in. Abigail said

Bird in the hand, mrs Sutton. Jennis said

Well, now you have two birds, if that contract is unsigned. Gladys said

Come on, Jennis. Jaap said

You have a choice to make. One investor will take this town in a bad direction... and the other won't. Abigail said

What will it be? Gladys said

Jennis... you already agreed. Jaap said

The future of valley springs is in your hands. Abigail said

Her you go, Mrs Powell. Jennis said

Thank you. Abigail said

Meanwhile back out of town

How're you feeling? Olivia said

A little better. Bill said

Good. Well, it looks like we both have our own escorts now. They let me stay long enough to know you were okay, but now ... it's time for me to go. Olivia said

Wait. I should have told you something before. Bill said

What's that? Olivia said

I know the prosecutor in Santa Clarita. When you arrived I... I may have wired ahead and called in a favor. Bill said

You did that for me? Olivia said

She wired back. She's recommending you serve less time than gowen, which wasn't much. Bill said

Thank you. Olivia said

One more thing. (As he kissed her) Bill said

I knew you had that in you. Olivia said

Yeah, it's all set. A Mountie said

Until next time. Bill said

All right. You're going to be okay. A Mountie said

At night fall Back in valley springs outside the infirmary

I brought you some coffee. Abigail said

Oh... thank you, Abigail. Thank you so much. There you go, sweetheart. Lee said

I know Carlson didn't have much choice... but to have to perform the Sam surgery he did on his wife... rosemary said

It has to be so hard on him. Abigail said

Yeah. Lee said
(Door opens)

Would you mind? Carlson said

Oh! Yeah, of course. Lee said
(Door opens) Rhonda's bleeding has stopped and her heart rate is strong. Faith said

Ohh! Lee said

she even woke up and spoke to us. Carlson said

Carlson did it. Faith said

We did it. (As hags faith) thank you for all your help. Carlson said

Oh! It's the least I Could do. Lee said

I think my wife was looking out for her little sister tonight. Carlson said

I know you definitely were. Abigail said

The next morning outside the saloon

Let's go for a ride in grandma's car? Gladys said

Yeah! Elliot said

Okay. (Elizabeth laughing) upsy-daisy! I am very pleased that this worked out, madame mayor. Gladys said

Oh, please, call me Abigail. Abigail said

Of course. "Abigail." If we're going to build this town together, we should be on a first-name basis. Gladys said

Thank you for believing in our town. Abigail said

There is a lot believe in. I don't know what to say to you, Elizabeth. Leave it to a school teacher to teach me a life lesson. Gladys said

I'm just glad that you and Duncan have reunited. Elizabeth said

Thank you. (As she Hugs Elizabeth) All right, we're meeting your parents in Santa Clarita. Let's get this show on the road! Gladys said

You know, I'm beginning to think that the term "grand dame" was invented just for Gladys. Elizabeth said

Oh, I think you're right. Abigail said

(Both laughing) Oh! I heard that Carlson's surgery was a success. Elizabeth said

A full recovery is expected. Abigail said

Carlson saved another life, the bank is re-opening... this day is just full of reasons to celebrate. Elizabeth said

I know how Gladys world celebrate. Abigail said

Couple of days later In Elizabeth's Journal
Dear jack, I have the most wonderful dream last night. I was in town and I turned, and you were and you were riding in handsome in your red serge. You'd come home early to surprise me. I ran into your arms and you held me tight. I was so happy...then I woke up. It's comforting to know that if you can't be here in my waking hours, I will see you in my dreams.

Meanwhile in town mercantile

I'm gonna bey that kite. Robert said

You've been saying that for three weeks. Corey said

And I've almost got enough money saved. Next week, that beauty will be floating in the air. Robert said

Will you let me fly it? Corey said

Only if you're careful. Robert said

Now, Aren't you boys going to be late for school? Ned said

We'd better go. Corey said

Next week, mr. Yost. Robert said

Meanwhile at the L. County Enterprises

Okay, well, um... I can have this for you by next Wednesday. All right? Thanks for coming by. Hello? Lee said

Mr. County? Ella Ra'Ad said

Uh, yes I'm Andrew Lee county. And, uh, you are? Lee said

Ella Ra'Ad. She said

Ella Ra'Ad...? Lee said

Sam's widow. Ella Ra'Ad said

Right! Oh course. It's such a pleasure to finally meet you. I was- - I was sorry to hear about your husband. Sam was a... was a good man. Lee said

Thank you. Ella Ra'Ad said

I feed bad, I wish I had stayed in closer contact. Lee said

Oh, I understand. It's a long way to Santa Clarita. And he was a busy man, too. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, what brings you to valley spring? Lee said

I'm visiting some of my husband's investment properties. I know this company is no longer one, but Sam always spoke so highly of you, so I thought I'd pay you a visit. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, he was best silent business partner I ever could've asked for. Lee said

He said you were one of the best investments he ever made. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, it was profitable for all of us. So how long are you gonna be valley spring? Lee said

A couple of days. Of course, I don't know anyone here, but valley spring seems like a lovely place. Ella Ra'Ad said

It is. It really is. You know... I would love for you to meet my wife, Rosemary. Are you free for dinner, by any chance? Lee said

Free as a bird. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, great. Why don't we say the saloon at 7:00? Lee said

I look forward to it. Ella Ra'Ad said

Fantastic. It's a pleasure to meet you. Lee said

Likewise. Ella Ra'Ad said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

I would go crazy in here. Even since I was a kid, I can't handle small spaces. Carlson said

I have a feeling I'm gonna here why. Bill said

Hide and seek- - on my birthday. Neighbor's closet door got stuck, and it was over three hours till someone found me in there. That'll be 30 years this Sunday. Carlson said

If I don't see you before Sunday, happy birthday. Bill said

Thanks. Ah! Carlson said

I didn't hear the click before it shut. Bill said

Yeah, but it still locks. Carlson said

Yeah, but I need to hear the click. Bill said

Why? Carlson said

Because it's a heartbeat. Some sounds matter. Bill said

(Door opens)

John came in. He hurt his shoulder. Faith said

Okay. Carlson said

Leave the tool kit will you? Bill said

Sure. Thing. Carlson said

Thank you. Bill said

Let's go. Carlson said

At the infirmary

One of the lumber stacks was falling over, and when I tried to stop it, I felt this sharp pain in my shoulder. John said

You've been having a run of bad luck lately, haven't you? All right. Let's take a look at this. How's this feel? Carlson said

That's okay. John said

Yeah? And what about when I come out to the side. Carlson said

(Inhales sharply) that hurts. John said

All right. Well, the good news is, you didn't dislocate your shoulder. Carlson said

And the bad news? John said

You damaged your rotator cuff. Carlson said

What's that mean? John said

That means you need to keep your arm in a sling for at least a couple of weeks. Carlson said

That long? John said

Mm-hmm. Maybe more. It depends. I need to evaluate you in a week or so, and see how you're progressing. Carlson said

How am I gonna work when my shoulder's like this? John said

If you don't give this proper time to heal, you could end up with long-term damage. Carlson said

Here we go. There. Faith said

Meanwhile at the schoolhouse

And don't forget your composition assignments for tomorrow. Class dismissed. Elizabeth said (cowbell clanging)

Mom's making hamburgers for dinner. Corey said

I love hamburger. Robert said

Me too! Corey said

Have a great day! Elizabeth said

Robert's staying with us for a few days while his parents are away. Corey said

Oh! That sounds like fun. Elizabeth said

When's your bedtime? Robert said

8:00 Corey said

Can we stay up telling ghost stories? Robert said

You know any good ones? Corey said

I know one so scary, it'll give you nightmares. Robert said

Meanwhile at the lee office

I'm sorry, mr. County. I wasn't thinking. John said

John, stop. It was an accident. No big deal. Let's just be grateful it wasn't anything worse. Lee said

Yeah. And Doc said I can be back at work in a couple weeks, so. John said

Or you could work here in the office while you heal up. Lee said

You serious? John said

Yeah, sure. All sorts of things to keep you busy. I need, uh... volume estimates. Lee said

Volume estimates? John said

It's pretty straightforward. The timber cruisers just got back from Mill creek. We're gonna be logging up there next week, and I need to know how much lumber we're gonna get out of those trees. So, to that end... here is the long book with their notes. Here are the conversation tables. And this... is the master log book. Use the tables to convert the notes into the appropriate columns. So can you handle it? Lee said

Yeah. John said

Great! Have a seat. Get to it. Oh! And make sure you double-check your work, all right? Because I make some pretty big decisions based on those numbers. Can't commit to a sale if I don't have the inventory, right? Lee said

I guess not. John said

Okay, well, I have a dinner tonight with Rosemary, so I'm gonna go. You've got this? Lee said

No problem at all. John said

Okay. Good man, John. Good man! See you in the morning. Lee said

That night saloon

Sam sounds like a lovely man. Rosemary said

Well, he was. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, he was, but when it came work, he did not fool around. Lee said

He used to say, "To succeed in business, you have to be tough... and fair." Ella Ra'Ad said

Lee says the same thing. Fortunately, all I see is the softer side of him. Rosemary said

Aww. Lee said

That was Sam. He shielded me from the stress of his work, but ... now I'm left with his business portfolio, and, well, I'm not quite sure what to do. Ella Ra'Ad said

Oh, that does sound daunting. Rosemary said

Mm-hmm. Lee said

I'm trying to understand what he looked for when he made investments. Call you tell me a little about the sawmill? It seems like quite the success. Ella Ra'Ad said

Oh, it is! It's expanding all the time. We're proud to say that lee now employs fifty people. Rosemary said

Um, eighty-nine, actually. Lee said

Eighty-nine? Rosemary said

Mm-hmm Lee said

Really? Rosemary said

Mm-hmm. Lee said

Well, hmm. Eighty-nine! Rosemary said

And I assume you owe timberland here? Ella Ra'Ad said

Of course he does. Over Eighty hundred acres. Rosemary said

Twelve hundred fifty acres. Lee said

Oh, lee! Eighty-hundred, Twelve hundred fifty... Rosemary said

(Lee laughing)Well, that's impressive. Ella Ra'Ad said

Yeah, well, thank you. We've been very fortunate. Let's just hope it stays that way. Lee said

And, uh, how far does your business extend? Ella Ra'Ad said

Lee has accounts all over the Northwest. Rosemary said

Actually, we're looking to expand nationwide. Lee said

Wow! The whole county? Ella Ra'Ad said

Mm-hmm. Lee said

Your business is booming. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well, the whole country is booming, and that's not gonna stop anytime soon. Lee said

I suppose not. Ella Ra'Ad said

And people will always going to need lumber. Lee said

I think you're being modest. Sam would always say it takes more than supply and demand to make a successful business. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well... Sam was right. Lee said

Hmm. This business side of his life is really quite exhilarating. I'm starting to feel jealous that Sam kept it all to himself. Ella Ra'Ad said

Well... it can be. Lee said

Meanwhile at the cafe

I gave them ten more minutes. They're telling ghost stories. Abigail said

I hope they don't get too scared. Elizabeth said

(Door opens) You look like a woman on a mission. Abigail said

I am I have a cake order for you. Faith said

Oh! What's the occasion? Elizabeth said

Bill told me that it's Carlson birthday on Sunday, so I'm planning a surprise party for him at the saloon. So I can count on you for the cake? Faith said

Of course. Abigail said

Oh, why don't I help you make it? Elizabeth said

That would be great. Thanks. Abigail said

I'll spread the word. Faith said

Okay. (Footsteps receding) So sweet. Abigail said

A little late at the county house

I hope Ella Enjoyed dinner tonight. Lee said

Of course she did! Why wouldn't she? Rosemary said

Mm. Sometimes, when I talk about work, I tend to ramble. Lee said

(chuckling) That's just because you love what you do, and there is nothing wrong with that. Besides, as I recall she was the one asking all of the questions. Rosemary said

What does that mean? Lee said

Well, she certainly took a keen interest in all that boring sawmill talk. Rosemary said

"Boring sawmill talk"? Lee said

You know what I mean. Rosemary said

Don't you think it's good for a woman to show interest in her late-husband's business affairs? Lee said

To a certain point, yes. But she asked so many questions about your company. I'm surprised she didn't ask you how many paper clips you went through last month. Rosemary said

Hmm. What does it say about me that I could probably answer that question? Lee said

(Laughs) only good things, I'm sure. I can't put my finger on it, but... but there's something about that woman I just don't trust. Rosemary said

I think you're over-thinking it. Lee said

What you call over-thinking, I call women's intuition. You wouldn't understand. You're not a woman. Rosemary said

Well- - (laughs) I usually encourage you to trust your instincts, but this time... I'm gonna trust mine. Ella is a widow who is curious about her husband's life, that's it. Lee said

Are you asking me to pretend I don't get a bad feeling from this woman? Rosemary said

No. I'm asking you not to jump to conclusions. I know, that's like asking the sun not to rise. I'm gonna go to bed. I love you. Lee said

The next morning at the cafe

How did everything go at the sleepover?Any Nightmares? Elizabeth said

Not a one. Have you heard from jack? Abigail said

I got a letter yesterday. He's going on some training exercise. Said it might involve some stern lecturing. Elizabeth said

Oh, well. All done with love, I'm sure. Abigail said

I'm sure. Elizabeth said

Gosh, just think, in a few weeks, he'll be home for good. Abigail said

I know. I can't wait. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the saloon (footsteps)

Martin Gowen? Ella said

Yes? Martin said

Ella Ra'Ad. Mind if I join you? Ella said

Please. Sit. Martin said

Thank you. Ella said

How is it that you know me? Martin said

My late husband invested in a mine, so he made a point of getting to know all of his competitors. Ella said

Ahh. Martin said

I learned some things from him. One, do your homework. Two, identify devalued assets and invest heavily in them. Ella said

Hmm. I see. Martin said

I've studied your career. You're a natural leader who can build something from nothing, and by the looks of you now, I'd say you're seriously devalued. Ella said

(Laughs) Well, you have managed to make me feel both good and bad at the same time, mrs. Ra'Ad. Martin said

Please, call me Ella. I'm hopping I can trust in your discretion, because I'm not ready to announce this yet, but I have a proposal for you. Ella said

I'm listening. Martin said

I'm opening a sawmill in Visalia. I'd like you to run it for me. Ella said

A little later at county's office

Lee around? Martin said

No, I haven't seen him in a while. John said

The boys down at the mill are wondering where you've been hiding. Martin said

Who says I'm hiding? Mr. County assigned me to a desk job, that's all. John said

Oh, good for you. How's the shoulder, anyway? Martin said

A little sore, but I'll be fine. John said

So what are you working on there, volume estimates? Looks like you're making a few mistakes there. You need a hand? Martin said

I'm still working it out. John said

You sure? Martin said

Yeah. John said

All right. Well, uh, perhaps you can tell Lee I stopped by. It's important I talk to him. Martin said

I'll let him know. John said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

And your change. Ned said

Thank you. Florence said

Thank you very much. Ned said

Well! If I didn't know any better, I'd say somebody's having a party. Florence said

Oh, and you'd be right. Can you keep a secret? Faith said

Oh, of course. I'm nothing if not discreet. Florence said

Okay. It's Carlson's birthday on Sunday. I'm throwing him a surprise party, and you're both invited. Faith said

Oh, yay! I love parties. Ned said

Me too. Where? What time? Florence said

The saloon. 6:00. Faith said

Okay. Well, rest assured, I will spread the word. Florence said

Perfect. Faith said

Now, I have some balloons in the back. Ned said

Oh! That would be great. Faith said

(Door opens) Afternoon! Carlson said

(Gasps) Uh, Carlson! What are you doing here? Faith said

I just need some coffee. Am I interrupting something? Carlson said

No! No. Not at all. I was just, uh... picking up some coffee myself. Faith said

I'll take some as well. Florence said

Oh! Here you go. Faith said

Looks like you're having a run on coffee today. Carlson said

Must be this cold snap. Ned said

Yeah. Must be. All right. Thanks a lot, Ned. Carlson said

Certainly. Ned said

Ladies. Carlson said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Thank you, Abigail. This is nice. I was just too tired to prepare a good meal for Lee tonight. Rosemary said

You? Tired? Abigail said

Yes. The widow of Lee's former silent partner is in town from Santa Clarita. Only for a few days, but Lee and I have been showing her around. Rosemary said

Oh. And how is that? Abigail said

Oh... well. You know me, Abigail. I am not one of those people who speaks out of turn. Rosemary said

Never. Abigail said

Her name is Ella Ra'Ad. There is something about this woman- - - I don't trust her! Rosemary said

Why? Abigail said

I don't know. It's just a feeling. It's intuition. Rosemary said

Well, always trust your intuition, Rosemary. Abigail said

Mm-hmm. Rosemary said

Oh, have you heard about Carlson's party? Abigail said

Yes! Faith asked me to provide the entertainment. Rosemary said

Oh. She asked you? Abigail said

Or I volunteered in either case... come one, come all! I'll be playing some of my favorite tunes. Rosemary said

At the saloon

There you are. Clara said

Oh, hey, Clara John said

I've been looking everywhere for you. So? Clara said

So? John said

How did it go in the office? Clara said

Oh. Yeah, you know, there's really not that much to tell. John said

Oh, come on. Tell me what Lee had you doing all day. Clara said

He asked me to do volume estimates. John said

What is that? Clara said

It's about how much lumber you can get from the trees. John said

You can do that sort of thing? Clara said

Um... yeah. John said

Really? Clara said

Yeah, it's a lot of math, but I just muddle my way through it. John said

(Chuckling) John Jeffrey... I'm impressed. Clara said

Don't be. John said

Sorry. I am. Clara said

That night at the mayors office

(Door opens)

Abigail? Do you have a moment? Martin said

Certainly. Abigail said

I, uh... I just gave my notice with Lee. I'll be leaving town soon. Martin said

What's going on? Abigail said

Well, I've been giving the opportunity to run a company in Visalia. Martin said

That's wonderful. How did this happen? Abigail said

Well, it was offered to me by a woman named Ella Ra'Ad. Martin said

Is that the widow of Lee's silent partner? Abigail said

I believe that it is. Martin said

Oh. What kind of company is it? Abigail said

Well, I'm not at liberty to discuss that at this time. Martin said

I worry about a job you can't take about. Abigail said

I understand that anything I do will fall under suspicion, but this is a legitimate opportunity. Martin said

I don't know, Martin. Abigail said

Abigail. Look at me. I'm a convicted felon on parole who's barely scratching out a living. And I'm trying to maintain some semblance of being a gentleman, but it's kind of falling apart. Not too many people would take a chance on me. Martin said

Martin, I just want you to be sure that it's the right opportunity. Abigail said

If it wasn't, I wouldn't take it. I have the skills to run a company, I've done it before. Martin said

With all due respect, running the Pacific Northwest mining company was not your shining hour, Martin. Abigail said

I know that I made mistakes... big ones... but I like to think that I learned from them, and that it'll make me a better manager. That aside... I want you to know I know that I wouldn't have this opportunity if it wasn't for you. I'll never forget that. Martin said

A little later at the jail house (door opens)

Bill? Abigail said

Hi Bill said

What's going on? Abigail said

Oh, I'm just trying to get this aligned right. Bill said

It didn't work? Abigail said

No, it did, it's... it's just bothering me. Bill said

Huh. Well, actually, I was hoping you could help with something that's bothering me. Abigail said

What's that? Bill said

A woman named Ella Ra'Ad she arrived in town yesterday. Abigail said

What's going on with her? Bill said

I don't know, but I'd like you to check her out. Abigail said

Well, I need more than that. Bill said

She offered Martin a job. Abigail said

If ignorance were a crime, there'd be a lot more people in jail. Bill said

It's to run a company but he won't say what kind. Abigail said

You think he's up to something? Bill said

I think he believes it's legitimate. I just want to make sure it is. She's from Santa Clarita. Abigail said

Okay. I'll contact the Mountie station, see what they know. Bill said

Good luck. Abigail said

Thank you. Bill said

Later that night at the cafe

What are you doing up? Corey said

Shh! I'm hungry. Is there anything to eat? Whoa... Robert said

My mom might be saving it to service in the cafe. Corey said

Ah, that's fine. She won't miss a little bite. Robert said

What are you doing? Corey said

It's fine, I do this all the time at home. Okay. Now all we have to do is put the two halves back together. You hold the base. It's stuck. Robert said

We need something bigger to push it. Corey said (crash)

The next morning

I can't tell you how many times Carlson has almost caught me doing something for his party. Faith said

Mm, it's not easy planning a big party in a small town. Abigail said

I can't wait to see the cake. Faith said

Oh! Come take a look. Abigail said

Oh... Faith said

Obviously... not my best work. (Whispers) Don't worry. I'll make another. Abigail said

(Hushed): okay. Faith said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

Elizabeth? John said

Hi! Elizabeth said

Hey. Could I, um... could I talk to you for a second? John said

Sure. What happened to your arm? Elizabeth said

Injured it at work. John said

Oh. Elizabeth said

Mr. County put me- - on a desk job so I could continue to get paid. John said

That's nice of him. Elizabeth said

Yeah... it was. But the problem is, what he has me doing, it involves... math. John said

Do you want me to give you a little primer? Elizabeth said

If, by "primer", you mean team me something I never knew, then yeah. John said

Meanwhile at the cafe

Here you go, gentlemen. Abigail said

Thanks, mrs. Sutton. Robert said

Yeah, mom. Corey said

You're welcome. So, is there something you boys would like to tell me? Abigail said

Uh... this food is really good. Robert said

Something else? Abigail said

I'm sorry, mom. It was all my fault. Corey said

No. It was totally my favorite. Robert said

Let me guess... Late-night snack went terrible wrong? Abigail said

That pretty much says it all. Robert said

Does it, Corey? Abigail said

We should've just been honest and told the truth as soon as we came down this morning. Corey said

And we probably shouldn't have tried to put the cake back together when it fell on the floor. Robert said

That says it all. Abigail said

So how much trouble are we in? Robert said

Well, everyone makes mistakes. The question is, what we do once we make them. I'm gonna leave that up to you two. Enjoy your breakfast. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the schoolhouse

Thank you so much for helping me. John said

It's no problem. Do you know the basics formula for calculating volume? Elizabeth said

I, um... never finished the eighth grade. But can you please not tell Clara that? John said

All right. Elizabeth said

What? John said

It's nothing. I just... I don't think it would matter to her, John. Elizabeth said

I guess I don't want to find out. John said

Look. I know that Clara has very deep feelings for you. Elizabeth said

And I really do for her. John said

I know. You're gonna make your own decisions, but... May I offer you a piece of advice, as a woman? Elizabeth said

Okay. John said

Trust her feelings. Trust your own. Be vulnerable. That's the foundation for any strong relationship. Now, then. The "L"... stands for "length." So, if you have a stack of lumber shaped like this... what do you think the "W" and "H" stand for? Elizabeth said

Width and height? John said

Exactly! Very good! Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the mayors office (door opens)

I heard back from the Mountie in Santa Clarita. Bill said

What did they say? Abigail said

This Ella Ra'Ad checks out. No criminal activity as far as they know. Bill said

"As far as they know." Abigail said

Well, do you know of anything that would indicate otherwise? Bill said

I don't. Rosemary has a bad feeling about her. Abigail said

Rosemary? Has a feeling? That's what this is all about? Really? Bill said

Never underestimate a woman's intuition, Bill. Abigail said

Meanwhile at the mercantile

Looks like you boys are doing some baking. Ned said

Yup. Robert said

All right, so, with the vanilla, that will be fifty-two cents. Ned said

fifty-two cents... Robert said

Yes, please. Ned said

I have forty-six. Robert said

(Coins clatter) And here... Corey said

I thought you were saying up for that kite you like so much. Ned said

(Sighs) I was, but... this is the right thing to do. It is, right? Robert said

All right. Forty-six, Forty-seven... Forty-eight, Forty-nine, Fifty, Fifty-one... Ah, close enough. Ned said

Thank you! Robert and Corey said

Thank you. Ned said

Meanwhile outside

Martin! I hear you're leaving us. Bill said

That's right. Martin said

Now, given you're a parole, I'll be letting the Mountie station in Visalia know of your impending arrival. Bill said

I understand, you have a job to do. Martin said

I wish you luck. Although, you've always made your own lunch, which has turned out pretty bad. Bill said

Well, perhaps this time it'll be different. Martin said

We'll, see. Bill said

That night at the cafe

Here you go. Abigail said

Thank you. Abigail, this is Ella Ra'Ad. Martin said

How do you do? Ella said

Hello. I've heard a lot about you. Lee and Rosemary are good friends of mine. Abigail said

They're a beautiful couple. Ella said

Yes, they are. Abigail said

And Martin speaks highly of you. Ella said

Well, enjoy your dinner. Abigail said

Thank you. Martin said

Excited to get started? Ella said

Oh, I am, indeed. Martin said

I have my eye on seven hundred across just outside Visalia. Ella said

Oh, I know the area. It's good timber there. Martin said

I already have a handshake deal on the purchase price. Ella said

Well, that's very good. Martin said

How long do you figure it would take to build the mill? Ella said

Well, with enough manpower, maybe I can have it operational within three months. Martin said

Wow. Well, impressive. Ella said

Well, I like to think that I can work quickly and efficiently. Martin said

Great. Now all we need is for you to get Lee's customer and pricing lists. Ella said

Excuse me? Martin said

We're going to need Lee's client and pricing lists. Ella said

How do you purport to get those? Martin said

You're going to take them from his office. Ella said

I don't know that I feel comfortable with that. Martin said

Well, you've got to get comfortable. I'm not starting a business without a leg up, and the information on those lists will give us that. It will jump-start our business. Ella said

Well, you don't need the lists to do that. Martin said

Since when have you been squeamish about bending the rules? Ella said

Oh. Oh, I see. So you were shining me on when you said that I had leadership qualities. Martin said

Martin Gowen, you are the whole package, and that package includes succeeding at any cost. Ella said (footsteps approaching)

Coffee? Abigail said

Thank you. Ella said

Please. Martin said

How is everything? Abigail said

The food is delicious. Ella said

As always. Martin said

Good. Abigail said (footsteps receding)

So? Are you in, or are you out? Ella said

I'm in. Martin said

Later that evening after the Cafe closed for the night in the kitchen

It says we crack four eggs into that bowl. Then we mix the eggs with the butter... and the vanilla. Robert said

You have to measure it first. Corey said

Ah, it's close enough. Robert said

No, it's not. We spent most of our money on this stuff. If we do it wrong, then what? Corey said

It should be fine. Robert said

What next? Corey said

It says we have to (fold sugar) But how do we fold sugar? Robert said

I don't know. Corey said

The next morning outside the saloon

Clara! John said

Oh. Hi, John. What's wrong? Clara said

I have something to tell you. John said

Okay. Clara said

I'm not particularly proud of it. John said

What is it? Clara said

Um... Fact is... I never finished the eighth grade. John said

Oh! Clara said

So I don't know how to do volume estimates, but I'm learning. Elizabeth, she's been teaching me? John said

Okay. Clara said

You don't care? John said

What I care about is that you were just honest with me. I'm very proud of you. Clara said

Really? John said

You didn't grow up having much, but you're working towards improving yourself, and that... makes you a good man. John said

You're the best. John said

Now get to work. Clara said

Meanwhile at the infirmary

I have something for your birthday. Faith said

Really? How did you know? Carlson said

Bill told me. Faith said

Ah. Oh, Faith, it's perfect. Carlson said

I saw it in a shop when I was in Lost Hills, and I remember you saying you used to play when you were young. Faith said

That's right, I did but... well it's been quite a while. (Begins playing) I could use a little practice, but... Carlson said

Well, it sounds pretty good to me. Faith said

Thank you for this. It really means a lot to me. Carlson said

You're welcome. Oh! If you're not doing anything after work, I'm heading over to the saloon. I hear Rosemary's playing some song tonight. Faith said

Yeah, sure. I'd love to. Carlson said

Great. Faith said

Oh! Good you're still here. Elizabeth said

Is something the matter? Carlson said

One of our horses is having a foal, but it came early, and she's having some trouble. Laurel said

I thought maybe you could help. Elizabeth said

Not really my area of experience, but I'm happy to do what I can. Carlson said

Do you think Carlson'll make it to the party? Faith said

I guess that's up to the foal. Elizabeth said

Meanwhile at the cafe (footsteps)

Ladies! Did you hear? Martin gave Lee his notice. He's leaving. Rosemary said

Yes, he told me he's going to work for Ella Ra'Ad. Abigail said

What with her? Rosemary said

Doing what? Elizabeth said

I'm not sure. Abigail said

(Sighing) Honestly... I don't trust either of them. Rosemary said

Martin hasn't done anything wrong since he's come back. Abigail said

That we know of. Elizabeth said

I know he wants to turn a new leaf, but perhaps the die is cast with that man. Rosemary said

I don't believe so. What do you think? Abigail said

It's beautiful, Abigail. Rosemary said

Faith is going to be so happy. Elizabeth said

But, now, did you make two cakes? Rosemary said

Oh...Corey and Robert dropped the first one, and they felt so bad, that they used their money to make this one to replace it. Abigail said

Oh... dear! Rosemary said

(All laughing) Well, it was a wonderful thought. Abigail said

Do you think the boys are gonna be upset when they find out you've baked another cake? Elizabeth said

I told them might not be enough to feed the whole town, and I should probably make another one, just in case. Abigail said

(Hearty laughter remains)

That night at the Lee's office

You're working late for a Sunday night. Martin said

So are you. John said

Getting the hang of those figures, are you? Martin said

Yeah! I think I am. John said

Good. Martin said

Hey, I thought I heard you gave your notice. John said

Oh, I did but I told Lee that I'd file these head-saw figures before I left. Martin said

Oh. Yeah. Go ahead. John said

Goodnight. Martin said

Yeah, you too. John said

Meanwhile outside Lee's offers

Did you get them? Ella said

Here they are. Martin said

Good job. Ella said

Yes, it was. Bill said

I'm not the man you were looking for. Martin said

Ella Ra'Ad you're under arrest for conspiring to steal business property. Bill said

Meanwhile at the saloon

Doesn't look like he's coming. Oh, well. Faith said

I'm so sorry, Faith. Elizabeth said

Should we take down the decorations? A woman said

I guess so. Faith said

Meanwhile at the jailhouse

(Door creaks) (soft click) you hear that? The sweet sound of justice! Good work, Martin. Bill said

What can I say? You could've seriously hurt my business, but you didn't. Lee said

I know I gave notice on my job, but I wonder if I might have it back? Martin said

Oh, I think we can do a little better then that. Why don't you come by the office tomorrow, and we'll see if we can't find you some kind of promotion. Lee said

Thank you, Lee. I appreciate that. Martin said

Thank you, Martin. Lee said

Well, should we head over to the saloon for a party? Abigail said

Be there in a bit. Bill said

Yeah, I'll be there in a little while. Lee said

Meanwhile outside

What's wrong, Martin? Abigail said

Well, foolishly, I thought things would be different, but clearly, Mrs Ra'Ad just saw me as a criminal. Martin said

Your not a criminal. Abigail said

I earned that reputation, Abigail. Martin said

Well, as of today, you're earning a different one. Abigail said

That's kind of you to say. I still have a long way to go. Why don't you go on inside? I think I'm gonna take a little walk. Martin said

Do you want company? Abigail said

I'll join you later. Martin said

Meanwhile in the saloon

Rosemary brought the finger sandwiches. Faith said

And those stewed tomatoes ? A woman said

Florence. Faith said

Do the cakes go back to the cafe? A woman said

Oh, I think they should. Abigail said

This was a really nice thing you tried to do for Carlson. Elizabeth said

It's just too bad he didn't get to see it. Faith said

(The door opens)

What's all this? Carlson said

(Laugher, overlapping) surprise! All said

Happy birthday, Carlson! You made it! Rosemary said

How did you know- - Did you did all this? Carlson said

Oh, no. No. Faith organized the whole thing. Rosemary said

Well, I'm sorry I'm late, but mom and foal are doing just fine. Carlson said

Well, that is good news. Abigail said

Oh, well! Carlson said

Meanwhile at Lee's office

(Inhales sharply) Wow. Good work, John. Who know you were a math genius? Lee said

Believe me, I'm not. John said

Well, meaning the board feet of standing timber is no small task. Lee said

Well, to be honest, without Elizabeth's help, I don't think I could've done it. John said

Yeah, but you asked for help, and you figured it out. The truth is, I was also gonna check your work, but, uh, I'm glad to see you rose to the challenge. I'm proud of you. Lee said

Thanks. John said

One other thing- - Um, if you're gonna be working in here at night, I think maybe we should lock the door from now on. Lee said

Okay. John said

All right, well, let's go celebrate Carlson's birthday, then. Lee said

Meanwhile at the saloon

Attention, everyone! Time to blow out the candles. Rosemary said

And hurry. I'm hungry. Robert said

Wow! Two cakes? Carlson said

Corey and Robert baked is one, and they bought the ingredients with their own money. Abigail said

Really? I'm impressed, guys. All right. Here we go. Ready? Carlson said (All cheering)

You were right to be suspicious of Ella. Lee said

Oh, I'm sorry. I think the other ear needs to hear that. Rosemary said

Mm...mwah. Lee said

This is very nice. Thank you. Carlson said

That's all for me. Lee said

Thank you. Rosemary said

Okay. Cake? Oh. Let's see how you boys did. Mm. It's delicious. Elizabeth said

Really? Corey said

Well, if it's that good I'll have a slice too... Ned? Would you like some cake? Florence said

Uh, you bet. Yes. Thank you. Ned said

Boys? I have a surprise. This is for the two of you. Abigail said

Thank you, mrs. Sutton! Robert said

I love you mom. Corey said

I got him that harmonica for his birthday. Faith said

Ooh! Abigail said

Oh! I just remembered. I got. Carlson a birthday present, too. I left it in my desk. Here. I'll be right back. Elizabeth said
Oh, I'll take a walk with you. Abigail said

Great! Abigail said

(Both laughing) Oh, I thank I left it on my desk. Elizabeth said

Okay. Abigail said

Darkness was falling. Abigail's arm was looped through mine. We were both laughing quiet as we walked. Back to the saloon I kept my eyes on the ground, focused on the crunch of the gravel behind our feet. I pulled my shawl tightly around me as a cold breeze blew. I looked up and felt my stomach drop at the familiar scene in front of me. There was a man in a red jacket, riding slowly toward the center of town. His face was obscured by the fog that had rolled in early that day. I froze. This was it this was my nightmare. Only this time, I wasn't sleeping. I felt Abigail's hand on my arm, steadying me as I trembled. I know there had to be a reason why I couldn't share the feeling that something bad was going to happen, and here it was. My mind couldn't even form the words that I expected to hear from the young Mountie, words I heard too many times in my dreams. Before the man on the horse had even reached us, I found myself sliding to the ground. The night grew darker around me.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I thought you were someone else. Elizabeth said

I'm looking for Elizabeth Thorsten. The young Mountie said

I'm Elizabeth Thorsten. Has he been hurt? I said

No ma'am. The young Mountie said

Just tell me he's still alive. Elizabeth said

I'm sorry, ma'am. The young Mountie said

No, no, no, no, no! Jack! Elizabeth said Crying

As I crumbled into the gravel of Main Street
