Amos Kane's POV
It had been a week since we defeated Apophis. I was just opening a portal to go see my niece and nephew. They were nowadays running the Twenty First Nome, and I was Chief Lector, so I never got to see them anymore.
I figured I might as well see them since I was taking the week off. And I hadn't even gotten a scrying message from them, which they usually did every other day. As soon as I landed on the pavement of the roof, I went to go find them.
I saw Walt eating a cookie on the terrace. He looked anxious. I coughed to get his attention. He looked up fast.
"Oh, hey, Chief Lector, didn't see you there." Walt \ Anubis said. Walt hosted Anubis due to a family death curse. I had been planning on telling him that my cousin my have a solution before he worsened.
"You know you can call me Amos Kane, or simply Amos." I said.
"Whatcha doing here?"
"I took a week off, so I figured I might as well visit Carter and Sadie. Where are they anyway?"
"Um," Walt said.
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
"Beyond wrong." I heard the healer known as Jas say.
I turned, and saw her grabbing a cup of coffee.
"What's wrong with my niece and nephew?" I asked.
"The energy drainage from the Apophis destruction spell, it kicked in way too fast."
"What?"
"Carter and Sadie are too tired to do anything other than sleep, and Sadie's worse: I had to hook her up to a ventilator because it was too tiring to breath. I was going to tell you, but given how busy you are as the Chief Lector, I didn't know if I'd reach you."
I immediately began to worry. Was Carter any better?
"Thanks for telling me now. Can I see Carter at least? Or Sadie?"
"Sure. Carter's in his room, and Sadie's in the infirmary."
To say I ran up to Carter's room is an understatement. I was there within a minute. I opened the door. Carter was wearing yellow pajamas. I went in quietly. It was obvious someone had tried to feed him, given how many crumbs were in the bed. Carter woke up a bit.
"Hey Carter." I said.
"Uncle," Carter said before groaning weakly. "What are you doing here?"
"Came to see you and your sister. I wasn't aware, however, of how tired you two were."
Carter smiled, and almost fell asleep again.
"I need to pee." He said before trying to get up.
And immediately falling onto the floor.
I then decided to spend my week off looking after him. He needed the help.
I then helped him to his feet, and gently picked him up, calling Jas to ask her of I could babysit Carter so no one had to watch him. Carter then peed himself. I guess he was simply too tired to hold it in any longer.
"Sorry." He managed before going back to sleep.
"It's okay." I said as he nodded off.
Jas helped me clean him up, and gave me permission to look after him.
I then went to see Sadie. Sadie was looking way worse. She was hooked up to a ventilator alright. She was wearing a long white dress, and was completely out of it. Of course, given that she cast the Ma'at spell, I didn't blame her.
I held her hand tightly. She was not going to be awake any time within a week, that much was easy to be certain of.
"Sorry no one told you sooner." Walt \ Anubis said.
"At least I know now. I'll watch poor Carter. He can't even make it to the bathroom." I said, turning to acknowledge him. Walt \ Anubis was wearing a sports shirt, and a leather jacket with sweat pants and combat boots.
"Yeah, last time he tried to go, he was on the floor for an hour, and peed after fifteen minutes."
"When was that?"
"Yesterday."
"Yikes. That bad huh? How long have they been like this."
"Since the morning after we got back."
I winced. I felt really bad for them about then. I was half wishing I had been the one casting the spell.
"Well, I'll go watch Carter. You got Sadie in case she wakes up." I instructed.
"Why me?"
"Because you're the boyfriend, and I know that you baited her into sleeping in your bed when you two got back from The First Nome."
Walt \ Anubis brown eyes widened in alarm.
"How did you know?"
"Kinda hard to to hide it with glamour magic against the Chief Lector."
He looked down, embarrassed.
I went back to Carter's room, and spent the day watching him, and helping him eat.
