Chapter 1 ~ A small Beacon

"I wonder if I should apologise?" The absent-minded comment causes Yang to squeak, falling from her bed and slamming into the floor as she stares wide-eyed at her mismatched self. "You couldn't have got the emo act from Tai, after all."
Yang stares as she shakily forces herself up.
She has two photos of her mother. The first of team STRQ on their graduation day. The second just after Raven gave birth to her. So she can't quite help but cement the first image she has of meeting her mother.
The closes Yang can think to call her clothes is techwear. Black coloured that seemingly let her mix with shadows as her hair is lazily let loose reaching the top of her thighs. The only noticeable colour is the golden garnished styled hand bracelet on her left hand.
And then her mind catches up.
"I wasn't brooding." She snarls.
"And I'm blond," She drawls, lazily walking towards the window. "Huh. When did Tai cut the maple tree?"
"I-, just after we went to Beacon?" Yang responds, blindsided as she watches her mother open the window and sit on the bannister. "What are you doing here?" Yang hisses, attempting to make sense of this.
"I did knock on the door." She offers unapologetically. "Twice. As I said," A hand waves in a lazily dismissive manner, "brooding."
Her mother, Yang realises, is insufferable.
"But why?"
Raven turns a glance towards her, crimson red studying her with incredible sharpness for the shortness of moments. And then she hums, eyes becoming dull and bored as she returns to staring at the stars.
"Why not?"
"I-, you-! I can't believe you! Eighteen years and now you're showing up in my life?"
Raven blinks, and Yang feels her temper flare when she continues with a seemingly bored shrug. "Less. I didn't just up and leave after you were born. Doesn't matter, really."
"The hell it-, do you even hear yourself? What? Was motherhood not as easy as you thought it was?" Yang viciously ignores if maybe she's left because of her. "You can't just-, it's, urgh!"
It takes her a moment to realise that she's being stared at. The most irritating part is when she realises it's with bewilderment rather than any form of apologeticness.
"...You seem… irate that I didn't stay."
"I seem-" She cut herself off, staring incredulously at the woman in front of her.
How couldn't she see anything wrong with leaving her kid behind?
"I mean," Raven frowns, tilting her head as if she's trying to get a better perspective of Yang. "I would understand if I left you defenceless, but you had Tai and Summer. I… do not follow."
"You don't follow? Which part of your being my mother don't you follow." Not to say Raven was her mum, that position belonged to Summer alone.
"...I'm... not?" Raven statement finishes more as a question seemingly lost as to the point Yang is attempting to make.
Yang, for her part, is no better. Her anger and pain were quickly being replaced with sheer bewilderment.
"You're... not? So we look alike because...?"
"I gave birth to you. That doesn't mean I am, or for that matter, wanted to be your mother."
"...what?"
She's surprised by how much that statements hurt. It shouldn't. Summer had been an amazing mum.
And yet it does.
Something flickered in Raven's eyes, hand going through her hair as she lets out an irate sigh. "Wait, no. Let me start again."
"...Eh?"
"I... did not wish to be a mother before you were born, it had nothing to do with you as a person." She nods as if that somehow makes it better.
"Then why the hell did you even have me? What? Never heard of using protection?"
At this point she just wants Raven to retaliate so Yang can wash her hands from her. Something negative rather than this... negative niceness.
"...What?" Raven blinks, twice. "Yang... how much has Tai actually told you about me?"
"...That your ambitious and had 'cause'? ...And where the reason Team STRQ disbanded."
"...that's it?" She asks incredulously. Slowly, a frown grows on her features as she mutters something under her breath. "No, of course, that's it. Tai wasn't about to... actually, yes, of course, Tai didn't say anything. It's 'I'm sobbing because I step on a snail' Tai."
Yang kind of wants to hear that story.
"Ambitious... I suppose that is the child-friendly term he'd use. Swap cause with obsessiveness and you might come close." She sighs, shaking her head in expiration. "And I suppose he isn't wrong with saying I'm the one that disbanded STRQ. Realistically though, our team was falling apart as far as through our second year at Beacon."
"Wait, what? STRQ was a legend!"
"We worked well together," Raven conceded, "but that does not mean we agreed with each other. We did at the beginning." She continues, eyes darting to meet Yang's own. "But by fourth-year Tai and Summer had to mediate between Crow and me. The only reason we made it that far was because, well... we worked very well together."
"...So the team fall apart and you decided to have a kid you didn't want?" She could already feel a migraine coming. This was getting close to Ruby's level of ridiculousness.
"...as I said, I had no wish to have children." And Yang had heard that the first time. Didn't stop it from hurting. "With that being said, Summer did wish to have children, so there really wasn't much need for thought."
...She corrected herself. This was Ruby's level of ridiculousness.
"And mum couldn't have her own kids because...?"
"...Tai and I will be sharing words." Raven mutters, eye twitching as something sounding awful like 'blackmail' and 'pain' escapes her lips. "Yang," She answers, turning to look at her intently. "Summer was trans, she couldn't have kids because she'd already gone through reassignment."
Yang stares. She stares blankly.
"So I had you." Raven shrugs as if what she said hadn't just shattered Yang's understanding of the world.
Wait. Wait, that-" 'makes no sense! Where did Ruby come from? She literally looks like mums second coming!"
"I pulled some strings." Raven's lips twitched, sounding rather happy with herself. "Getting the appropriate equipment for IVF between Summer and myself was a nightmare, but one of my contacts pulled through. We were worried when she was two months premature, but she turned out fine."
And with that, Yang's brain frizzled as her fragile world falls apart.
"I-, you Ruby's mum?" Yang almost shrieks. This had to be some horrible joke. Or a nightmare. Please let this be a nightmare.
"Well..." She drawls, lips twitching in amusement. "I am her mother, Luk-" Raven blinks, eyes flickering to her missing limb before grimacing. "Ah, that probably was a bad tasted reference."
"...What?"
"Don't worry about it, just quoting an idol." She waves Yang's -very rapid growing- concern away. "I wanted to talk to you. Seeing how Beacons down, and both Atlas and Haven are out of the question, I suppose you could say I had an offer of shorts to make."
"What?"

So this was in my head... since last week, and... yeah, wasn't entirely happy with canon Raven. Just... yeah.
None the less, if you felt I should have written something differently, be it personality and/or displays of different states of mentality, please leave a comment! Any advice is welcome and appreciated!
Anyways, Ill See you next time! Ciao!
