Stairs

"Would you go up or downstairs?"

Day 3. 03:03 AM.

The door was opened. Donnie just stood there, watching the outside. It was very dark. Not a single light. He thought about it. Was he really going to do that? What if he got caught? What was the worst that could happen to him? The guards would probably just hit him with the teaser-gun and then take him back. He sighted. Donnie needed to know if he could find a way out that night. Anyway, guards had to sleep too, right? He would just be gone for a couple of hours, maybe less.

Donnie looked back. He would do that for his brothers. Just for them. He knew none of them could stand to be there. Leo and Raph seemed to want to kill each other every time they were together, plus Raph wasn't feeling well and Mikey, he was so scared all the time.

Donnie filled himself with bravery. He finally stepped outside. He closed the door behind him. He found himself surrounded by complete darkness. He stood there for some seconds until his eyes adjusted to the dark and then, walked through the hallway and arrived to the elevator. Before pushing the button to call it, he thought things through once more. The elevator might have a camera. They would notice that he was out for an expedition at night. He wouldn't take the risk.

Donnie started looking for the stairs. There had to be some. It was too difficult. He couldn't see a thing. Finally, he found a door at the hallway. The only door. He opened it slowly. It could be a room with people in it. When he saw no light as he opened the door, he proceeded. He smiled. They were stairs. They were two ways, up or downstairs. Donnie remembered noticing that the first day, the floor which had all the doctors and their working places was on the 8th floor. He also noticed the second day that the gym was in the 7th floor. Maybe he would find something on those floors, or he could just run upstairs to find the rooftop of the building and maybe there, it would be easier to escape. They would just have to climb down the building.

Donnie smiled to himself once more. He had a plan. He started running upstairs, trying not to make any noise. Although his eyes were already adjusted to the darkness, it was too much of it and it was really hard to see, but he noticed that there was a little number next to each door that lead to the floors, he deduced it was the number of the floor.

The feeling of going up those stairs was amazing. He felt the adrenaline rushing through his veins, but he was also exited. If he founded out that he could arrive to the building's rooftop, he would go back immediately and tell his brothers to get the hell out of there. That was the night.

Finally, the stairs ended, leading Donnie to just one door.

"That must be it." He murmured to himself.

As he approached the door, he noticed that it had a very thick chain holding it close. It also had two locks, which weren't a big issue. They just had to break them, but the chain, it was different. He had to find something to break it and it would take days to do it, but he didn't care.

Donnie started going downstairs. Maybe on the 8th floor, where they had all the medical equipment, he would find something useful. As soon as he saw that he arrived to the door on the 8th floor, he opened it slowly. Again, no sign of light. He entered to the hallway that the door leaded him to. Donnie closed the door behind him and started walking. There were lots of doors. Each of them had a sign outside that said what was the room used for.

Donnie looked at them and even tho he couldn't see well, he tried to read them and memorize them. He didn't want to get lost on his way back to the stairs. He found a desk at a hallway. Maybe for some receptionist. He looked on the drawers. He found many papers, pens and pencils, but nothing that could help.

After walking a few more highways and finding no room that could possibly have something to break the chain, he founded a door that caught his attention. The sign of the door said, "Dr. Everett Olson" and in small letters, under the name, Donnie could read "Director of the Hospital". He was the one in charge. Maybe he could find some useful information. He tried opening the door. It was locked. Then, he remembered the desk that he had found, and he returned to it, running. When he arrived to the desk, he opened the drawers once more. He found some clips.

"Yes." He murmured, and he closed the drawer and ran back to the door.

As he arrived, he started giving the clip a new shape. Then, he pushed the clip into the keyhole. After a couple of minutes, Donnie finally managed to open the door. He founded an office. Another desk, but this time, it had a computer in it. He closed the door behind him and ran to sit on the desk chair and without thinking about it, he turned the computer on.

"Damn it. Am I really going to do this?" He murmured to himself once more.

When the computer was already on, he saw the clock. It was 1:52 am. Donnie opened the internet. He saw that the doctor's email account was logged in. Without hesitation he opened it. He found out that his last email arrived at 10:38 pm. The mail was from someone called Lowell Saunders. The title of the mail was "DNA samples."

Donnie's anxiety started growing as he opened the mail. The first thing that he discovered was that the name of the lab that they were in, was "Lambert Laboratories". He would use that information later, but now, he just wanted to read the mail.

For: Everett Olson

From: Lowell Saunders

Title: DNA samples.

Good night Dr. Olson. I'm sorry for sending you this email this late, but Dr. Lambert wanted me to let you and Dr. Delia Crawford know that the four subjects from our actual research are not a new species. Today, we searched on their DNA samples right away and our doctors found out that they are mutated species. We don't know what mutated them into what they are today, but we need to find out as soon as possible.

Dr. Lambert also wanted you to know that he changed his mind regarding the subjects. He doesn't want us to make a new species discovery anymore. You see, tomorrow, as you know, Dr. Crawford, you and me, will meet with Dr. Lambert, but I wanted to let you know his new plan. He wants to discover the origin of this mutated subjects so that we can make more of them and sell them to different laboratories all around the world. As animal experimenting is prohibited now, he thinks that selling mutants will be much better for the testing, as they have lots of human characteristics.

From now on, all the testing in the subjects will be to know their origin and to try to experiment different products in them to analyze how similar are their reactions to the human beings. Dr. Lambert has already told Dr. Crawford about the new plan and Dr. Crawford has already ordered the psychologist in charge of the subjects, Sophie Vega, to re-do their schedule for tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we will be testing different kinds of illnesses on the subjects to test if the mutants are able to be sold for vaccine-making companies. Before the testing, Dr. Lambert would like your people to give them the basic immunizations because, as they told us on the physical exam, they don't have any and we could be at great risk of losing the subjects if they don't have protection against simple illnesses.

Dr. Olson, that is all for tonight. I wish you a good night and see you tomorrow.

"Oh no." Was the only thing that came out of Donnie's mouth after reading the mail.

He couldn't believe it. Before, he sure thought that when the scientists discovered that they were mutants, things would get complicated for them, but he never thought that those people would have such a cold thinking. They had to get out of there. He needed to get his brothers. They needed to know about that. He was going back to the apartment.

Donnie turned off the computer and ran outside of the office. As soon as he stepped outside of the door, he saw a light on the hallway. It was a flashlight, but when Donnie noticed it, it was too late. A guard at the other side of the hallway saw him. Donnie's heart started beating faster as the guard yelled at him.

"Hey freak! What the fuck are you doing outside of your room?" He shouted as he rang an alarm.

Donnie started running through the hallways once more, but this time, it was to escape. The guard started running after him, but Donnie was too fast for him. Donnie looked behind as he kept running and he saw that the guard was way behind. He looked to the front again, finding two more guards running to get him. Donnie didn't hesitate and, before they could electrocute him, he knocked those guards out.

Donnie kept running, without looking back, but suddenly, he heard a strong sound behind him and less that a second after that, he felt a very strong pain on the back of his upper left leg. Donnie scram in pain as he fell to the floor. He saw one of the guards with a gun on his hand, then, Donnie looked down. Even though it was very dark, he saw a pool of blood under him.

Donnie kept shouting as five guards ran to get him.

"Get the hell up!" One of them shouted as he pulled him up.

Donnie let another strong scream as he felt the pain.

"I can't freaking stand!" He yelled as the tears started coming out.

"Well, I don't freaking care!" A guard exclaimed.

"What should we do with him?" One of the guards asked.

"Let's take him to Dr. Lambert. He was looking for someone to question anyways." Another one responded.

One of the guards carried him and started walking.

"No! Wait! I'm sorry! Just take me back to my brothers!" Donnie begged. He started feeling weaker and weaker. "I need to… see my brothers." Were his last words when he lost conscience.

Hello again! This was the chapter of the week. I hope that you enjoyed it and I'm sorry, but you'll have to wait to know what happens to Donnie.

Thanks to dogsareawesome247 and to JillieBean073 for reviewing my story. Btw JillieBean073, I will try to dial down the cursing, as you ask as much as I can, but I'll still leave some if I may. I feel like it brings realism to this story.

One more thing! As you may have noticed, I added the number of day in the lab and the hour at which the chapter is going on. I thought that it would help the readers to know the time when each chapter it's happening in future updates.

So, I really hope that you liked the chapter and don't forget to follow and favorite the story, as well as to post a review with your opinion. It really makes my day.

Bye!
