"Not everything you see in them is real."
Day 4. 01:44 AM.
Raph couldn't sleep. He was sitting at the living room's couch. Mikey couldn't sleep either and both of them were feeling anxious, so they decided to watch some TV. When they checked all the movies the apartment had, they found the movie 'E.T.'. That movie was definitely one of their favorites when they were young. They decided to watch it together while they fell asleep. Mikey was already sleeping. He fell asleep when the movie had just started. He was definitely tired.
Leo had chosen to do something else. When they arrived to the apartment, the first thing they did was to eat something and as soon as they were done, Leo told them he was tired and that he would go to sleep in his room. After he went to his room, he hadn't gotten out.
Raph wasn't even asleep. He had so much going around in his mind. He was thinking about Donnie, how was him? Was he spending a better night that them? Why did they took him away? Where was he?
He was also thinking about Leo, Mikey and him. What would the doctors' experiment on them the next morning? Would it be worse than the last one? Would they make it out alive? They had to try to escape that night. He couldn't risk his brothers, but on the other hand, what about Donnie? Would he be alright if they managed to escape that night? Would he make it out alive while they got to April and Casey to get help?
Raph sighted as he stood up. He needed to talk to Leo. He couldn't be the only one making that choice and he didn't wanted to wake up Mikey. Raph turned off the TV and went upstairs. He deduced that Leo would be sleeping so he just opened the door of his room to wake him up.
The room was all dark and Leo wasn't sleeping. He was sitting on his bed, crying. As soon as he heard Raph coming inside he wiped off his tears immediately.
"Raph…"
"Leo… sorry. I thought you were sleeping… Are you okay?"
"Yes." He said, trying to control his breath.
"You don't seem to be. What's going on?" Raph asked as he sat on the bed with his brother.
"I'm sorry." He managed to say before he broke down in tears again.
"You shouldn't be sorry for crying. We all feel the same way and…"
"Raph, you're right!" He interrupted. "It's my fault we ended up here. I stopped you from killing Shredder and if I hadn't done it, we…"
"Leo don't apologize. I'm the one who's sorry. You know that sometimes I can't control my anger and I end up saying things I don't really mean."
"That doesn't make it less true. I stopped you from killing Shredder and I stopped you because I was feeling so much rage at that moment. He killed our Sensei and he kept his head like a reward. I wanted to be the one to take his life. I wanted to look him in the eyes while I did it and when I saw you pointing your Sai at his head… I couldn't stand it. It's my fault we're here." He cried again.
Raph sighted as tears started coming out from his eyes.
"I get you Leo. I felt the same way. I didn't controlled my actions either. You told us we were just going to his lair to spy on him and your order was clear: We weren't going to attack. If I would have listened…" He sobbed. "And as if it wasn't enough, I blame you for something I did wrong too, I got Mikey and myself drunk the first night here instead of working on a plan… I'm sorry, Leo." Raph cried as he hugged his brother, who returned the hug, full of tears.
"I'm sorry too."
As soon as they were done hugging, Leo asked him.
"Anyway, why did you come to my room in the first place?" He wiped his tears.
Raph looked to the floor and sighted.
"I need you to help me make a decision… I've been thinking for hours and there are possibilities that we die in one of the experiments. Someone could die next week, or someone could die tomorrow. If we wanted to, we could find a way to escape tonight, but…"
"Donnie…" Leo murmured.
"Exactly. We don't know where is him or how is he doing. He could also be dying right now. If we leave, we can go and find help, but we don't know if he… if he will make it until we're back."
"The doctor we saw today, Nora, she said she would try to investigate and tell us about Donnie."
"Yes Leo, but how long? She wasn't even sure she could find any more information. If she can't, then we will just lose time that we can't afford losing."
Leo sighted.
"So, what's the decision we need to make?"
"We can find a way to leave tonight. If we find Donnie in our way out, which I don't think we have a lot of possibilities with, we take him with us, but if we don't, we run and try to find help to get him out of here as soon as possible, or, we can stay here and wait until Dr. McKinney or Nora have some information to find Donnie and escape, but that can take a lot of time that we can't waste."
"Do you think that if we leave tonight, they will kill Donnie?"
"I don't think so. If they do, that would be really dumb because they would lose all of their guinea pigs, but I do think they would keep experimenting on him and maybe even torturing him, trying to find us again."
"… What do you think Donnie would do?"
"I have no idea Leo." Raph sighted.
"Okay… First, we need to get out of this room. If they are keeping Donnie alive, they must have him hidden. Have you noticed that the elevator floor numbers start on number five and go all up to number 11? There are no 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors, but that we can talk about later. We know for sure that number 6 is our floor, number 7 is the gym, number 8 is the doctor's floor and number 10 is the experiments floor."
"I get where you're going to. There are three floors we don't know about. Numbers 5, 9 and 11."
"Let's leave this to fate. We get out of the apartment and we look in… three floors are kind of risky so let's check two of them. Let's say we check floors 5 and 11. If Donnie is not in any one of them, we leave and get help to get him out." Leo sighted.
"If he's there, we take him with us and improvise our way out."
"Fine… How do we start?"
Raph stared to the window of the room. There was no way to open it but, could they break it? He stood up and touched the glass in front of him.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Leo sighted.
Raph looked the distance from the floor they were in and the window.
"It's not a lot of distance. As you said, this building starts on the 5th floor, we're in number 6 so, theoretically it's like jumping from the second floor of the building."
Leo stood up and took a look to what was outside the window too. They would land on a garden and they could see a very tall fence some foots away, in front of them. It was a pretty high one, but nothing they couldn't jump.
"Is it possible? Wouldn't we break a bone or something?" Leo asked, not so sure of what they were about to do.
"Well, Ted Bundy did it and ran away from the police afterwards…"
"…What? Who the hell is Ted Bundy?" Leo looked at him confused, not understanding a word of what Raph had just said.
"You don't know Ted Bundy? It's like America's Jack the Ripper."
Leo just looked at him with surprise.
"I said it once and I'll say it again: You are seriously twisted."
"Thanks, again." He smiled. "My point is that it's totally possible."
"If we do this…"
"I know… we wouldn't be able to go back inside the building and find Donnie, but I guess it's the easiest way out. There aren't even guards on the garden. They will notice we're gone by tomorrow at nine and by that time we will be coming back to get Donnie out."
Leo sighted.
"Any ideas on how to break the window?"
"You go and wake up Mikey, I've got the window."
"Alright, that concerns me, but sure." Leo said as he walked downstairs. Raph followed.
"I thought you would handle the window."
"I will, but, what? Did you think I was going to break it with my fists?"
"Maybe."
"I'm not stupid Leo." He talked, walking to the dining room.
Leo got to the couch where Mikey was sleeping.
"Mikey…"
"What? Is it time for the experiments again?" He exclaimed alarmed, but sleepy.
"No, it's 2:00 am. We're gonna try something to get out of this place."
"Seriously?" He said with a little smile on his face.
Before Leo could respond him, they saw Raph climbing the stairs, carrying one of the chairs of the dining room.
"Uh… what's the plan?" Mikey asked surprised.
"Just... come upstairs."
Mikey stood up and followed Leo, who went up the stairs behind Raph, who entered Leo's room.
"Why do we have to do this in my room?"
"Because here is where we started with the plan. Besides, seriously, Leo? We're going to escape, we're never seeing these rooms again."
"How are we going to escape?" Mikey asked.
"We're gonna jump off the window." Leo answered while Raph started hitting the glass with the chair.
"But, what about Donnie?" He questioned with a sad look on his face.
"We'll come back to get him with April and Casey."
"Fine…" Mikey sighted.
The sound coming from the metal chair legs crashing strongly over and over against the glass was a very loud sound. In their minds, the three of them were hoping that no one on the other floors would hear them. The glass was beginning to break.
"Raph hurry or they will hear us and find out we're trying to escape." Leo said impatient.
"It's almost broken!" He exclaimed almost out of breath.
After some hits, the glass exploded in tiny little pieces, making a very strong noise. As soon as that happened, a very loud alarm started ringing and the apartment was lightened up in red.
"Shit!" Raph yelled.
"We need to get out, now!" Leo ordered.
Raph immediately threw the chair away and got ready to jump, when he noticed, something was not right.
"What the hell…" He murmured.
"Come on Raph, we don't have time!" Leo yelled.
"It can't be!" Raph exclaimed with anger.
"What's wrong?" Mikey asked altered.
"This isn't a freaking window! It's a screen!"
As Raph said, there was no window. It was all fake. There was a screen projecting a garden on the other side of the glass. Filled with anger, Raph hit the screen, which at the moment broke and stopped projecting the image of the outside. On the other side of the screen they found a wall.
"I hate this place!" Raph yelled with anger.
Not knowing what to do, Leo and Mikey just stood there, watching the scene amazed. Suddenly, they heard a strong noise coming from downstairs. The guards had entered the apartment.
"What do we do now?" Mikey asked starting to panic.
Leo hesitated, but he knew his team needed him. They were both waiting for his orders. He looked around and looked to the ceiling. He stared at it for a moment. He could break it.
"Mikey lock the door and cover it with the bed! Raph come here and carry me!"
Mikey nodded and did as told.
"Carry you?" Raph shouted altered.
"I'm going to break the ceiling." Leo said as he stood up on Raph's shoulders.
"Mikey, hand me the chair!" Leo yelled.
"Coming!" Mikey responded as he pushed Leo's bed to the door. He stopped and handed Leo the chair, who immediately started hitting the ceiling as hard as he could. Almost instantly, it started to break down.
"Leo, hurry! I can hear them coming upstairs!" Mikey alarmed, holding the bed against the locked door.
"Done!" Leo announced.
He quickly dropped the chair and climbed his way up to the ceiling's hole that lead to the ventilation ducts. Once up, he reached down his arm so that Raph could climb too. They suddenly started hearing strong knocks on the door.
"Open this door!" They were screaming from the other side. Mikey was still holding the door.
"Mikey quick!" Raph yelled.
As soon as he heard Raph's voice, Mikey ran and with his brother's help, he climbed to the ventilation ducts. Then, they heard the sound of the guards firing a gun to break the lock and open the door. Without even thinking where they were going to, the turtles started crawling through the ducts.
When the guards finally opened the door and looked inside the room, they noticed the big hole in the ceiling.
"They're in the ventilation ducts!" The guard warned.
The turtles were just following the duct as fast as they could, didn't matter where it took them. They finally saw a hole to the outside. Leo crawled to it.
"It leads to the hallway outside our door!" He said, jumping to the hallway lightened up in red.
His brothers followed him and as soon as they were all down, they ran to the elevator.
"They're here!" A guard yelled.
"Run!" Raph exclaimed.
As they ran to the elevator, three more guards started chasing them.
Mikey quickly pressed the elevator button and, while it arrived, the three brothers fought with the guards. Suddenly, the doors opened, and the turtles got inside. Leo and Mikey kicked out two of the guards and Raph closed the doors.
"Where to?" Raph yelled.
"I don't know Raph! Just pick a button!"
"Press number five!" Mikey suggested.
Raph did. The elevator started going down. They finally caught their breaths.
"Do you think this is where they have the entrance of the building?" Mikey asked.
"I don't know, but as soon as the door opens, we run." Leo ordered.
They got ready to fight and the door opened. They ran as quickly as possible even though they couldn't see any guards.
"What the hell is this place?" Mikey talked as he followed his brothers.
The place was divided in large rooms that they could see were full of medical equipment.
"This looks like a cellar where these people keep what they don't need." Leo responded.
"Okay, wait." Raph interrupted as they stopped running. "Is there even a way out of this floor? How the hell are we supposed to walk out from a cellar? This is probably the basement of the building."
"Yeah, but if this is the basement, how do you get out of the building?" Leo questioned.
"I think we lost the guards." Mikey said.
"Okay. Let's find something useful to use as a weapon." Leo decided.
The three of them started walking the place. It was really big. They didn't know where to begin. They checked one or two rooms. Nothing useful. Then, they found a room with a metal bucket outside of it. It seemed to be a freezer.
"Hey, look!" Mikey exclaimed. "What do you think they keep here?"
"We'll it's a freezer so, probably things that need to be cold." Raph responded not amused.
"Let's get inside! Maybe we find something useful!" Mikey smiled.
"Mikey just concentrate, okay?" Leo scolded.
"Alright, do what you want. I'll just take a peek inside and if I find something useful it will be mine."
Before Mikey could even touch the handle, they heard a voice.
"What the hell are you doing here, freaks?" A bald, dark skinned and very corpulent guard was staring at them.
The turtles couldn't even move a muscle when the guy pulled out two guns with sleeping darts and fired them to Mikey and Raph, who fell to the floor instantly. Leo tried to attack but the man recharged one of the guns and made him fall asleep too.
"I've got the turtles." Was the last thing they heard him say on a walkie-talkie.
