Living Nightmare: Michelangelo

"Here in the forest, dark and deep, I offer you eternal sleep."

Mikey opened his eyes. He saw trees and sunlight coming from above. He noticed that he was lying on the ground. He moved to stand up, feeling the leaves on the ground touching his skin. Once standing, he saw his surroundings. Everything was so beautiful. The colors of the forest where so bright. It had been a long time since he had seen that kind of colors. He could hear the birds singing on top of the trees and feel the fresh wind of the forest, as well as the warm heat of the sunlight entering the forest. He took a deep breath and smiled. He felt free now.

Mikey laughed and ran with joy around the forest. There were no more cells and nothing holding him down. He felt as if he was one with nature. As he ran, he found himself surrounded of yellow flowers all along the forest. He decided to follow the path that the flowers made. A few meters ahead, he arrived to a valley full of yellow flowers. He stood there and to watched the beautiful view for a moment. Then, he continued running as he giggled with joy. He wandered along the valley for some minutes, when he saw something that caught his attention. Far away in the valley, he saw two figures running and playing. Mikey could hear them laughing. He stared at them for a moment until he recognized that the figures were Leo and Raph. Mikey grinned. His brothers were also there. Suddenly, Leo and Raph saw Mikey and waved their hands in the air, saying hi to his little brother.

"Mikey! Come here!" Leo yelled with happiness.

"We thought you were never coming!" Raph exclaimed.

"Where are we?" Mikey asked.

"Doesn't matter where we are, we're free now!" Leo rejoiced.

"Yeah! Now come here with us!" Raph called him.

Mikey was about to run with his brothers, when a thought came to his mind.

"Where's Donnie?" He questioned his brothers.

He could see Raph and Leo staring at each other confused.

"We thought he was coming with you." Leo answered.

"No! When I woke up I was all by myself!" Mikey replied.

"Don't worry Mikey! I'm sure that he'll be here in no time! Come join us!" Raph invited him again.

"Uh, I'm going to look for him. He could be lost!" Mikey told them.

"Alright! Just do it quick! We're having so much fun!" Leo laughed.

His brothers continued laughing. Mikey looked his surroundings once more, wondering where to go to find his brother. Then, he saw a mountain at the other side of the valley. He could start looking there.

Mikey began walking once more, watching how the figures of his brothers playing grew smaller and smaller as he continued. Finally, he arrived to the other side of the valley, finding the entrance of the forest that lead to the top of the mountain. He continued walking, but this time, on his way to the top. While walking, every once in a while, he shouted his brother's name waiting for him to respond, but all he could hear afterwards was just the wind.

After some minutes, Mikey arrived to the top of the mountain. Still, no sign of Donnie. Once up, he found a big tree that made a huge shadow on the ground that was full of leaves. He turned around and saw the beautiful view from the top of the mountain. The forest was enormous, and the sun was setting. He could also see the valley full of yellow flowers on the distance. He knew that his brothers were waiting for him, but he just decided to stop and enjoy the view. Maybe Donnie was already with them.

Mikey walked towards the huge tree and lied on the ground. He closed his eyes and listened to the nature for some minutes. That forest was so peaceful. He then opened his eyes and looked at the clouds above him. They were very thin and looked as if someone had grabbed a paint brush and painted the sky with yellow and red. That was the most beautiful sunset he had ever seen in his life.

After some time there, Mikey saw lots of beautiful purple butterflies flying away from the tree. Mikey stood up and, with a smile lightening up his face, he started to follow them into the forest. As he ran, he could see that the light was running lower and lower. The sun was almost gone, and the night was arriving. Mikey's smile started disappearing. He wasn't sure that he wanted to keep following those butterflies. He didn't liked darkness and he preferred the beautiful forest he was in some moments ago. Also, he knew that his brothers were waiting for him at the valley. Even though he doubted, he kept following the butterflies. He somehow knew that he could trust them.

As he kept running, the beautiful sounds of the forest were going away, turning into silence. Also, the beautiful colors he saw at the forest were fading. Now, everything was darker. The only bright color that continued shining was the purple color of the butterflies he was following. His heart started beating faster. Then, out of nowhere, he entered to a part of the forest that was covered in a very dark mist. He saw each one of the butterflies he was following, disappear. He was lost now.

Mikey looked around. He couldn't see anything but mist. He couldn't even see his own feet and it was hard to see his hands. He didn't know where he was or how to return to the beautiful forest he was in. Then, he thought about his brothers. Where they still waiting for him? He had just saw them some minutes ago. Or where they hours? How much time had he been away from them? What about Donnie?

Mikey started to have trouble breathing. He wanted to find his brothers. He couldn't keep going without them. He just started crying, not knowing what to do. He felt how his tears ran down his cheeks and feel into the ground. He couldn't see anything but mist. How was he going to find them now?

He lifted up his head and began calling them.

"Leo! Raph! Donnie!" No one responded.

He decided to try again and again. Minutes passed. No one answered.

Mikey fell to his knees. When he woke up in the forest and saw his brothers in the valley he was happy, and he felt in peace. Why did he had to walk away from them? Why couldn't he just wait for Donnie with them? If he had, he wouldn't be lost and alone now.

After some minutes, he realized that he was tired of crying. He had to think straight. He was stronger than that. At the forest, when he woke up, he was alone and managed to find the way to his brothers. He did it all by himself. He needed to calm down and concentrate. He could do it. He had to get out of the mist to find them. He wiped off his tears, took a deep breath and started walking.

Time passed, still no sign of his brothers. The mist kept blurring his sight. Mikey was frustrated. Was he never going to find them? He continued walking until something made him stop. He had stepped on something slippery and wet that made him shiver. As soon as he touched it, he removed his foot with disgust. What was it? He looked down. I was hard to see with all that mist. He decided to crouch, then, he grabbed whatever that was with his hand and lifted it so that he could see it. It was a frog. A dead frog. Why was it dead?

Mikey let out a small scream and threw it away but, before he stood up, he saw something that caught his attention. That was not the only dead frog on the ground. There were dozens. Mikey's breath started accelerating. What was going on in that forest? All of the frogs were dead in a little water stream that was running down the hill. Maybe if he followed it, he would finally arrive to the valley. He had to control himself and stop being afraid.

After some walking, the mist started disappearing and Mikey arrived to a lake. It was a very large one. Now, he couldn't continue walking that way, which meant he had to go back to were he was before. That wasn't the way to find his brothers.

"What am I gonna do?" He murmured to himself while he sat on a rock.

At least the mist was gone, but it was still dark and hard to see. He looked up and stared at the lake. He noticed that the edge of the lake had even more dead frogs on it. Maybe something was wrong with the water of the lake. He decided not to think about it. The only thig that mattered was to find his brothers so that he wouldn't be alone no more.

Suddenly, he saw a baby turtle walking by his side and on his way to the lake. Mikey couldn't let it arrive to the lake. The water would kill it. He quickly stood up and, before the baby turtle could touch the water, Mikey grabbed it. He gave a little smile to the baby turtle.

"Now we're not alone anymore." He whispered.

He looked up again and saw the lake once more and again, something caught his attention. It looked as if there were things floating on the water. Were they tree trunks? They were big. Like the size of a… human. Mikey looked closer and left the baby turtle on the floor. Were those human bodies floating in the water?

Mikey's heart started beating faster and his breathing started accelerating. He then perceived them completely. They weren't just human bodies, those were scientists. They both had a white coat. One was the corpse of a man and the other one, was a woman. All of the sudden, Mikey saw something that made his shiver. Both of the heads of the corpses started turning to him slowly. Mikey wanted to shout, but he couldn't. He stayed there, watching in shock. He then recognized them. The man was Dr. McKinney and the woman was Dr. Tran. The two scientists that promised to help them get out of the lab. Now, they were lying dead on the water, with a lost look and a very pale skin.

"No… No! Why are you dead?" Mikey exclaimed.

Then, something interrupted him. A sound coming from the lake, a few inches away from him. Mikey looked down slowly. He saw bubbles. Before he could move or say something else, he saw a hand coming out of the water and pulling him into the lake. Once underwater, Mikey shouted and tried to break free, but he couldn't. Whatever was pulling him down, was too strong. He then saw what was in front of him, dragging him down.

"Donnie?" He managed to pronounce, noticing that he could talk underwater.

"Mikey, I've been waiting for you. Where have you been?" He said.

He looked pale and his skin felt so cold. Mikey could almost think he was… dead.

"I've been looking for you all day long. What are you doing here?"

"I'm trapped in this lake. The scientists tried to help me, but they can't. They don't know how, and our oxygen is about to end. We're going to drown here if we don't help the scientist."

"How can we help them?" Mikey asked confused.

"They need to know how were we created. I tried to help them, but I just can't remember."

"You can't remember?" Something was wrong with that Donnie. Why did scientists needed to know that so that they could help them?

"No Mikey. Help me. We need to get out of here. If not, we'll drown."

As much as it he hated it, he wasn't going to help him. If that was really his brother, he would knew how were they created. He sounded like a scientist. He couldn't be his brother, but he had to try.

"What was the name of our father?" He asked with his voice full of sadness.

"Mikey, we need to get out of here now. It's getting hard to breathe. Just tell me how we were made." Donnie responded with a serious look.

"Tell me! What was our Sensei's name?" He cried.

He then saw that Donnie started to have trouble breathing.

"How were we created, Mikey? Quickly!" He asked with a choked voice.

"You're not my brother!" He exclaimed.

"Mikey! Help!" Donnie was drowning.

"I can't!"

Seconds later, Donnie stopped moving. He was gone. Mikey stared at him with horror and sadness. Who was that Donnie? Where was his real brother? Suddenly, he noticed that he began to have trouble breathing. He had to get out of the lake. He swam to the top of the lake just to realize that he couldn't get out of the water. He was trapped now. Fear started to take over him as he tried and tried to get out of the lake. He achieved nothing. Now, he was never going to find his brothers. He breathed as much as he could and held his breath. He accepted his faith. In no time, he would drown, just like Donnie. The only difference was that he would die alone.
